Framed Exclusivity is their style; from a decor inspired by cinema to a menu that boasts of rare delicacies, ‘Movies’ is sure to become a ‘super-hit’!

A

The moment you enter the restaurant, you will be excited at the prospect of finding the projectors placed on either side of the walls, playing some of the famous movies. ‘Bolt’ and ‘Indiana Jones’ it was, as luck prevailed for us. Walk in further and if you’re lucky, you’ll find a table with your favourite actor or actress’s picture on the chair and many interesting facts about him/her on your table. The sight of it is sure to thrill you! Having carefully and selectively handpicked the furniture and tiles from all over the world, this restaurant gives a feeling of walking into a museum of famous movies in Hollywood, Bollywood and not to forget namma Kollywood too! While the furnitures are emblazoned with every star from MGR ,Sivaji Ganesan to Johnny Depp and Jenifer Lopez, the tiles reflect the famous Hollywood movies of the 1900s like, ‘Gone with The Wind’, ‘Casablanca’, ‘Singing in The Rain’ and ‘The Lot’.

a menu based on steak. They imported meat from Argentina, known for its enticing taste. A welcome aspect of ‘Movies’ is that they are keen on changing the menu once in a month to offer their customers the best international cusine. Don’t forget to treat your taste buds with the special dessert, Vathalappam - a Sri Lankan dessert more often known as custard pie in English. The prices vary between Rs. 125 and Rs.400. Reasonable, we must say, as the quality compensates for the prices being a tad bit heavier on our pockets.

grand start to a picture perfect dinner is what ‘Movies’, the restaurant at Kodambakkam high road is all about. Inaugurated by our very own superstar Rajnikanth on the midnight of December 11, it seems to have tickled the food keys of the Chennaiites.

So go ahead and experience real life cinema at the “Movies”. Our own superstar has given the nod, so what are you waiting for? - Madhumita Prabhakar

Cheered at being placed on a table framed with Marilyn Monroe’s picture, we flipped the pages of the menu card to taste the choicest of dishes they have to offer. As for the starters, they have an array of salads, breads and fried foods in Continental, Oriental, Italian and Indian cuisine. While the Chicken Tikka and Veg Dimsum seemed to have the apt amount of spice, the salads with fresh cream were appetising and light. The main course, also offering special dishes from different cuisines did win over our taste buds. Aiming to deliver the taste as it should be in every cuisine, the Chefs at the restaurant promise to use their expertise in authentic ingredients to retain the taste. Some of the must-taste Indian dishes in the main course include Mushroom Fried Rice, Sweet ‘n’ Sour Vegetables and the ‘Veg Dumpling in Spicy Black Bean’. Of course, the special course would be the New Zealand Lambshack cooked in red wine. Available only at the Movies and Le Royal Meredien, it stands apart in the menu. Having inaugurated at the far end of the year when celebrations were at its peak, they wanted to offer a unique cuisine for their customers. While others chose to bring out the exotic Italian cuisine on New Year, they opted for

Vathalappam More commonly known as custard cream, it has a unique taste to it. Predominantly made of coconut, custard cream and garnished with pudhina and a dash of honey, it is sure to give you a sight of Sri Lanka’s very own treasure.

ncessantly surrounded by pollution, burnt plastic fumes and garbage dumps day in and day out seem to be a matter of utmost concern to us Chennaiites. While the government has been taking steps to plant saplings at every park, roundabout and road dividers, it is not a big task for us to adorn our own sweet home with some greenery and fresh air. A plant nursery which has a display of an beautiful array of plants, trees and cacti is G.K Nursery at Injambakkam.

colourful sights. “We established it five years ago and ever since, the choice available for the customers has gone up to a great extent,” says Grace, the owner. This nursery proffers numerous varieties of palm and fruit saplings, vegetable seeds, cacti and orchids. While most of the plants are grown at the nursery itself, some are procured from Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh. When asked about the customer demands and top preferences by them, Grace modestly says, “There are times when there are absolutely no sales to individual cus-

tomers. Though, we get bulk orders from landscapers on a regular basis.” Moreover, they have divided them into indoor and outdoor plants as some grow well under minimal sunlight. So what do they do when it rains heavily? “The plants get damaged and we do incur losses due to rains. But there is nothing we can do about it.”

ensures that they are informed about the do’s and don’ts of raising a sapling. So, take a walk around the nursery, pick a plant of your choice and embellish your homes with some greenery.

Gizmo Planet around the world

We have some really interesting gizmo news from across the world. Read on!

Share your Memories! HP now takes the digital photo frame to new heights with its HP DreamScreen line of smart displays. It does more than just flaunt pictures, it links wirelessly to the Internet and can display pictures, five-day weather forecasts, update content on Facebook and groove into the Pandora music service. This smart display comes in two sizes (10” and 13” inches diagonally) and they can also be linked to your desktop so that you can place multimedia content directly on them. Go ahead and show off your dream come true!

Power-Packed! Could 2010 finally be the year of the fuel cell? Looks like it. Horizon’s hydrogen fuel cell is all set to hit the markets by the end of the year. Hydrofill is a ‘personal hydrogen station’ that can convert water into hydrogen gas, which then gets stored in a small cartridge called the Hydrostik. These cartridges can then be used to recharge smaller gadgets on the go. It’s power on the move.

Trail-blazer Have you lost that important parcel that your friend couriered you? Well, take heart, somebody just thought of a product that can trace your parcel as it gets packed and moved. When ‘FedEx SenseAware’ is dropped into your package prior to shipping, it gives real time information on the package via the web. A GPS receiver, accelerometer, cellular transmitter and a light sensor are all built into this tiny product, and they jointly report data until your package is received. This would allow users to know if their fragile package has been dropped, opened or lost along the way. The device is available for shipping in USA and costs 120 USD.

Trendsetter Lenovo B500 has got what it takes to make it big! With its angular design and metal finish, it comes with Intel Core 2 Quad processor, 1TB storage, 23” full HD widescreen display, a built-in JBL speaker system and is all out to woo the gadget freak. It also has an optional TV tuner with remote, in case you want to transform it into a media center. This one is perfect for the serious gamer and multimedia enthusiasts.

One Mall

fits all!

Are you tired of shop-hopping your way to fill your wardrobe? Worry no more! The ‘Mall culture’ has finally reached destination Chennai. Watch out as the city gets ‘mall’ed!

C

hennai has always been lagging behind in the concept of shopping malls. Given the standards for a mall, Citi Centre and Ampa Skywalk remain to be the only shopping malls in the city. Of course, Spencer Plaza, Abirami Mega Mall, Alsa Mall, Fountain Plaza, Prince Plaza among others have catered to the huge shopping appetite of Chennai quite satisfactorily. But to be qualified as a ‘mall’, a complex needs to include an anchor – the crowd puller which will be the kingsized store (like Lifestyle in Citi Centre) and a movie screen complex for sure.

Lucky for us, a few players have already come in to the city to fill the gaps in the retail market left by the absence of sufficient shopping malls. Ampa Skywalk Located strategically on Nelson Manickam Road, this newest attraction for the city’s shoppers has been a welcome change, especially for those from areas like Anna Nagar, Kilpauk, Chetpet, Egmore and the surroundings. Though partially open, with Westside as the anchor, the mall is also home to Landmark and Wills Lifestyle. There are about 20 outlets in the food court with KFC, McDonald’s and Café Coffee Day taking the lead. However, the pride of place is the PVR Cinemas that had opened grand with seven screens. And its ten-level parking space makes the ‘mall experience’ a lot more comfortable! With three floors of shopping, this six-lakh square feet of space is bound to witness a great number of footfalls in 2010. Express Avenue In an attempt to probably compensate for the scarcity of malls in the city, Express Avenue is opening as the largest shopping mall of South India in the grounds of The Indian Express House. Likely to be inaugurated mid-2010, this mall is bound to change the face of Chennai in the shopping scenario. Located in a prime spot – the Club House Road – this place offers a hotel, office and retail space. Spread over fifteen-lakh square feet, this will indeed be the largest mall in the city, completely equipped with huge brands, a space to park 1800 cars

10

and movie screens by Satyam Cinemas. EA, self-proclaimed as the ‘fashion statement of Chennai’ boasts of an international design with excellent finishes, adequate safety measures, strong security systems and beautiful landscapes. One can safely bet that this is going to be the greatest phenomenon for Chennai in 2010. Coromandel Plaza Located on ECR in Semmenchery, this upcoming mall claims to hold over a 100 stores, four movie screens, four major departmental stores and restaurants. With an anchor spread over three floors, an electronics store and a home needs store apart from a hyper market, this is likely to spread out the shopping crowd of the city evenly. With more than twenty, huge residential developments dotted around this mall, the developers of those projects are happily projecting this plaza as an added advantage of buying homes from them. With levels of basement parking, a cellar level and five floors, this is soon going to become a landmark in the most happening belt of Chennai. Ramee Mall Do you remember the Magunt-Oberoi 7 star hotel that was a hot topic of discussion a few years back? Well, it is widely-known that the plan was shelved and the static site is once again witnessing work progress. For the regular passers-by, the big blue board reading ‘Ramee Mall – Opening Shortly’ is a spurt of hope in that otherwise sober stretch of the city. Though this does not really qualify as a mall without an anchor and movie screen, it definitely is anticipated to attract the shoppers of Chennai. On a land measuring a little over an acre, this three-floor shopping complex will quench the shopping thirst of the city through its stores and fine-dining options. Times do seem to be changing with a good development in the retail scene of Chennai. And for the regular, malldeprived Chennai-ite, it’ll be a ‘More-theMerrier’ scenario. - Correspondent

Raising Funds for Housing k n o w . s p e a k . a c t

“ ..‘Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,

the following conditions for considering a housing loan application. They are:

Be it ever so humble there’s no place like home!

i) individuals should be in a permanent service or run their own business.

A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there,

ii) The age limit should not be more than 60 in the case of the salaried class and 65 for self-employed people.

Which, seek through the world, is ne’er met with elsewhere. Home! Home! Sweet, sweet home! There’s no place like home! There’s no place like home! ..” - John Howard Payne (1791-1852)

I

s not owning a home the cherished dream of everyone today? But such a dream is not easy to achieve unless one has some ready resources to make a beginning. Some 30 years ago a ground (2,400 sqft) was available for Rs 2,500 in a good locality in Chennai, but today one ground costs Rs.2.50 crores plus. Even for acquiring a decent flat, one has to pay a hefty sum, moving the heaven and earth for mobilising funds. These days housing loans are offered by banks, nationalised and private-sector, and some non-banking financial institutions. Such loans can be availed of without too many hassles, but many are not aware of the eligibility criteria, the interest rates and the other fees involved. The main points that banks take into account are the applicant’s monthly income, expenses statement and liabilities, assets if any and the cost of the property (some have area jurisdiction). The banks and financial institutions have their own norms for fixing the rate of interest which is either a fixed or floating rate. A few banks offer packages combining both. Some nationalised banks have stipulated

iii) The borrower should have invested at least 20 percent of the cost of the property including stamp duty and registration fee. iv) The minimum loan amount would be Rs.50,000 and the maximum amount would be decided taking into account the repayment capacity of the borrower(s). If the application is for outright purchase of a house/flat, the amount sought as loan will be paid to the seller at the time of registration, provided the buyer (borrower) has already paid his share of the cost . For projects under construction, the loan amount is disbursed in stages. The application can be made jointly with one’s spouse to be eligible for a higher loan amount. In such cases, the salaries can be clubbed for the purpose of calculation of the loan amount. This can be done either when the property is jointly held with the spouse or the spouse stands as a guarantor. The fees charged by the banks vary and generally are for processing loan application (varies from 0.50% – 2 %), documentation, late payment, prepayment of loan, partly or in full (some banks levy a penalty up to 2 % with a ceiling), legal verification, technical inspection etc. Documents required The following documents have to be submitted to the bank along with the loan application:

- Construction of a House - Title deeds of the property along with the mother document - Encumbrance certificate for the previous 13 years - Tax receipts till the date of application Sanctioned plan - Estimated cost of construction from an engineer. - Legal scrutiny report from the bank’s panel advocate. ment of Income Tax (if you have income in addition to salary) or Form 16 in the case of salaried persons. Income tax assessment orders and returns for the previous three years. In the case of self-employed, a brief note on the nature of business, year of establishment, present bankers, form of organisation and the applicant’s position in it , a certificate of the applicant’s educational qualification and declaration of the net worth of the applicant.

- Sale deed executed by the builder in favour of the purchaser.

2) Age proof.

- Title deeds of the builders/landowner for a period of 13 years.

4)Proof of residence.

- Development agreement between the builder and landowner. - Agreement of sale/construction between seller/builder with the applicant. - Sanctioned plan - Encumbrance certificate for 13 years. - Tax receipts paid till the date of application. - NOC from builders - Legal scrutiny report from bank’s panel advocate. In addition to these, the following are also to be got ready:

1) Latest salary certificate with details of deductions from the employer and Income Tax Assessment Order from the Depart-

3)Two passport-size photographs.

Tax benefits Under Section 24(1) of the Income Tax Act, those who avail housing loans are eligible for tax benefits. Interest repayment of Rs.1,50,000 per annum qualifies for tax saving under the new Finance Act, provided the property is acquired or constructed with capital borrowed after April 1, 1999 and the acquisition/construction is completed before April 1, 2003, and the property is self occupied. An added benefit under Section 80(c) on repayment of principal amount to the extent of Rs.1,00,000 is also available on the same loan subject to compliance with conditions stipulated in the IT Act. - Correspondent

The People's B

ehold the common man. Not the ones that can sustain desires or the ones that simply dream on, but the kind that best defines the fine line between expenses and an investment. Dreams are at an arm’s length but no, sweat shall rather be put to better use? Half the world’s population is left torn and yet consumerism preaches that the ‘good’ come at a price. Farce is what this is, that quality is directly proportional to the fat bill attached. Now behold the Tata motors’ new baby. True, at a first glance the Nano does look like a faceless monster. Nose-less rather, considering a car’s front often transcends into a human face for many. But that doesn’t make it any less of a proper car compared to its segment rivals. Nor does the surprisingly light cheque it takes to buy one. The ergonomics have been taken care of, efficiently of course, in a way they don’t push the numbers up. That’s the reason it’s inexpensive, not for some reason the fat pockets would invent. The 620cc engine, according to your neighbour driving a Ford, might appear to have come off a moped. But no, it has been squeezed to give over 30 horsepower, only a tad less than the ageing favourite Maruti 800. What’s more, you can tell that neighbour that the small engine continues to ride easy on your pockets.

And therefore, it saves you from the joining the group that throws their arms up and raise flags every time petrol prices go up one paise. Plus, you wouldn’t do much damage to the environment with its small carbon emission figures. The small engine sure does have shortfalls – 0-60kmph takes a patient twelve seconds similar to the Maruti 800, but when was the last time you recollect driving in any Indian city without your foot on the brakes for more than ten metres? It must be appreciated that the car has been built for the cities and must not be humiliated by letting it roll on the highways. The problem there would be the climb to top speed taking eons and increasing the possibilities of getting you rear-ended. The next step in the comparison with its nearest rival, the 800, would be the interiors. It has been claimed that the Nano packs in twenty percent more interior space than the 800. This would mean you get a comfortable leg room as you drive and enough knee room in the rear to let your toddler son crawl. Air conditioning has been branded luxury and I couldn’t agree more, considering the car’s purpose of providing four wheels for the price of two. The top end variant comes loaded with the A/C though, but with numbers skilfully played with so they don’t skyrocket.

Car

Now pause. I might be doing this review all wrong as this isn’t just any another car to be plugged. This doesn’t fit into pop, nor is it rock. It’s a whole different genre. Yes, if there’s a price segment, there would be rivals but none of them qualify to be compared with Tata’s smug-mobile. They haven’t just built a car here, they have gone back to the drawing boards and decided they shall satisfy the true purpose of the automobiles – personalised commuting. Call it Freddy Flintstone’s cars’s 21st century version but I’m afraid there aren’t many cars around that satisfy the purpose of the cars better than this. You have four wheels, a cozy well designed cabin and air conditioning if you chose the high end variant, all of which shall help you get to work in the same amount as time as your honourable colleague in his big V6. You don’t pay extras for the badge, you are not traded with cheap trinketry for a fortune, you are charged exactly what you should be – if all that can’t sound satisfying, I’m afraid it isn’t the car’s fault then.

would make faces to raise the windows manually if it saves a chunk of your salary. In the traffic that makes your car kiss the bumper of the one in front, there wouldn’t be much use for the power steering, would it? The Nano, therefore, isn’t just a car but a lesson on what is needed and what is being paid for. I’d repeat, the purpose of automobiles – family commuting together in comfort - has never been better satisfied in almost a century. I bet it wouldn’t fail to cause endless smiles in your family - Varun Sridhar

Concorde Motors (india) ltd. Glaxo, No:39, velachery road, Guindy, Chennai - 600032.

There isn’t any problem with the rival Chevy or the Hyundais but should you walk up to one, be prepared to feel the pinch of having spent twice as much as the Nano only to see your speedometer get to sixty faster. Hardly a few of us

ut up in a cosy corner in Shastri Nagar, Adyar, Deez D’zine Factory can surprise you with its sheer variety and exotic designs. When we say variety, it is not just about the fabrics and the patterns that are intricately woven on their garments, they flaunt quite a variety of sizes as well. Dhanya Ramkumar, founder of Deez D’zine Factory explains, “ A few years ago, I found it really difficult to get clothes for my size, as I was pretty thin. This inspired me to set up Deez D’zine Factory to fill this gap.” The shop caters to frail , medium-build and the plus-sized women unlike other shops that expect the buyer to have the perfect hour-glass figure. Having said that this shop has something for everyone, now, let’s take a tour of this boutique. Just as we step in, an interesting array of kurtas look at us invitingly. Subtle elegance or retro chic, whatever be your fashion statement, they have got that perfect design to refurbish your wardrobe. They are priced anywhere between Rs. 600 and Rs. 1800. The adjacent shelves have a good collection of leggings and duppatas to complement your kurtas. The leggings come at a reasonable Rs.300-400 price range. Moving further , you can find designer chudidhars that’ll guarantee you attention at any wedding. If you are looking at something more casual, then check out their party-wear collection in an adjoining room (to the left), where great tunic tops and cool tees are kept . Pair them up with some cool jeans that are priced at Rs. 450 and above. They have not forgotten the footwear either, this collection varies from simple brown and black slip-ons to utterly stylish white shoes. If you are a party bird, you definitely ought to check this. Not to forget those funky belts near the door, they create quite an impression. The pathway to the inner room (to the left) is filled with little exquisite accessories. Though little pricey, they are definitely unique.

When we move further down, there is a beautiful collection of ethnic saris. Be it silk cotton, Andhra cotton or the designer bridal trousseau, their collection has been handpicked to impress the queen in you. They have chosen vibrant hues to complement any lady. Are you thinking, not my kind, I would prefer the skirts? Then move on straight from the main hall. They have a decent collection of skirts, not the ones you can wear to office though! Then, we found the Indian version of these skirts too, yes, the pattu-pavadais! But sorry, this is not for the ladies, it is their Children’s collection. They have frocks too for your little ones. Vidya promises more, “Soon, we are bringing in more kids wear, as in proper children garments. I don’t like kids dressing like elders showing off their navels and so on. Children are meant to be dressed cute in frocks.” - Catherine Gilon

So, what would you easily miss out here? No, it’s got nothing to do with your wardrobe. We were surprised to find price tags on the paintings adorning their walls. Dhanya Ramkumar smiles and explains, “I have always been passionate about paintings, when my friends wanted to buy them, I thought why not?” She then showed us some amazing oil paintings, some finished, some near completion. hoever would have thought of a wooden cell phone? Well, two Koreans Hyun Jin Yoon and Eun Hak Lee did and they proved that cell phones needs not be plasticbased. The Maple Phone is a wooden cell phone that exhibits a touch sensitive keypad and also includes a camera. It is impossible to completely use wood to create the cell phone, hence a combination of products have been incorporated. It is probably heavier than regular cell phones and looks like a piece of wood with numeric stickers; but from an environmental perspective it works very well! Perhaps this will pave the way for future wooden products, like wooden MP3 players, wooden laptops and even wooden televisions! Go wood!

e’s tall, dark and handsome and is back on screen as the ‘Theeradhu Vilayattu Pillai’ (TVP). We are talking about Vishal, the action hero whose trying his hand at comedy and romance in this flick with not one but three heroines! It sure is a tough task, so what does our Romeo feel about it? Read on Have you undergone a makeover for Theeradhu Vilayattu Pillai? Yes, my look is completely different. It’s a slick and stylish film and you will see a new Vishal in it. So watch out! How was it shooting with three beautiful heroines? (Laughs) It was tough! It was almost like shooting for ten action films! But all of them cooperated beautifully and have given their best shot. What’s TVP about? It’s a good mix of romance and comedy and it’s all about fighting it out in love! The comedy part was quite a challenge and hopefully, I have met it well in the film!

So, what does the ‘theeratha vilayattu pillai’ do in the film? I play a complete playboy character, the alpha male. It’s a film for the youth. It shows how a male chauvinist encounters incidents that change him in life.

Actor Vishal

Back in Action! How close is the character to you in real life? (Laughs) It’s definitely not my story! But like everyone else, I have also experienced incidents like the ones in the film like saying ‘I love you’ to a girl for fun or telling lies to girls to impress them. So, to that extent, I guess all of us can relate to it! In fact, I used to tease director Thiru saying, ‘hey, I don’t need lines to learn for this role! I can just be myself! ( laughs).’ We hear there are a lot of new faces in the film… Yes, editor Suresh debuts, the stunt choreographer Dilip is another debutant, he is the son of Suresh Subrayan, the renowned stunt master. Even the director Thiru is a fresh face. Tanushree Dutta and Sarah Jones are also debuting in Tamil. How has the music turned out? Well, it’s my next film with Yuvan after Thambirabarani and the music rocks. We shot a song in Melbourne and another in New Zealand. Arvind Krishna’s camera has added on to the magic. Totally, there are five songs. We hear you visit the Himalayas often. Any particular reason for that? Well, I just like the Himalayas and visit a resort there often. I like to be by myself sometimes and I love it there. I may even shoot a film there someday. I have seen some wonderful locales (taking cues, anyone?)! What’s your next project? It’s a film with Bala and I said yes because the story is amazing. It’s a double hero subject. I am really happy that he trusted me for the role. - Rinku Gupta
