Are you a seasoned football player? Or are you just a crazy cricket fan? Here’s someone who takes your love to the next level.

I

t is that time of the year when there are a lot of sport-related activities going on, both in Chennai and around the world. Probably the biggest example is the IPL, which is a huge hit with the public. The football world cup is also just around the corner. This means that it is also that time of the year where sport lovers need to get off their couches and buy all the equipment (both sport gear and other sport related accessories like team jerseys and other official merchandise) that they need. If you are looking for a place that promises to fulfil almost every one of the sport-related needs, then head on to the Jus’ Sport located in Ampa Skywalk. To make it Work! f a s h i o n . s t y l e . i c o n

F

or a prolonged and effective workout, it’s best to start it good. Some easy tips to keep you charged during your workout session… Stretch; and take it slow Any good workout starts with a stretching session. Don’t hit the treadmill straightaway, but make sure you have stretched – starting from the neck down to your calves. It is also better to increase speed slowly on the treadmill: walk for the first ten minutes before you start jogging. This will ensure that your knees are not suddenly affected. Also, as most gym trainers will tell

you that the first ten to fifteen minutes of a workout are not high on fat burn, they are essentially to accustom your body to the workout that will follow. Make sure your gym trainer or sport trainer gives you a complete set of exercises that will stretch you from neck to ankle; also make sure your trainers are certified. Warm water Drinking warm water before a workout might help you sweat a bit more ; and sweating enough is a good thing. It’s better to avoid drinking iced water before a workout. Eat light Do not eat meals right before a workout. You will not be able to make the

best of your workout, and exercise is an obvious hindrance to the digestive process. It is best to keep your intake to a bare minimum for at least two hours before a workout. If you are starting your day with a workout, then eat light – have a smoothie or coconut water before you head to the gym. Keep meals for a time well after the exercises.. Rehydrate After a workout, and in between workout, you must keep yourself hydrated. Dr Kannan Pugazhendi, renowned sports physician has this to say: measure the amount of water you lose by weighing yourself before and after a workout. The difference in your weight is the amount of water you sweated out. About 50% of this amount of water should be replaced right after workout, and the remaining 50% within 24 hours of your workout. He also says that when working out you lose a small level of sodium. It is a myth that having salt will alleviate the situation. It’s also very good to have natural drinks like tender coconut water. But in terms of practicality and expense, it might cost you

a lot to buy enough coconuts to make 2 litres of tender coconut water a day. Sports drinks are a good option when working out. Besides, the amounts of sodium and potassium in those drinks are tailored carefully to meet the requirements of your body. Keep Cool For the hot summer months, you can keep your body cooler by following simple tips like not wiping the sweat off your body, or changing T shirts in between a workout, as it helps keep your body cooler. Change clothes once you are done with your workout. Also, avoid outdoor exercises in the afternoon, it’s probably best to save any outdoor exercise for before 8.30 am or after 6pm during the summer months. So, before you hit the gym, make sure your body is tuned for the action. - Krithika Sukumar

The Secret of my Energy W

hen it comes to staying energised, particularly if you play sports, there’s a dizzying array of carbonated drinks, juices, caffeinated drinks, and bottled ones to choose from. There’s another category of beverages that’s causing a buzz: energy or power drinks. Is the afternoon sun sapping your energy? Sometimes all that you need is a boost of extra oomph to awaken those weary spirits, get your blood pumping and keep you refreshed, on the go. Energy drinks can include anything from natural non-alcoholic beverages to ‘high-energy’ supplement drinks. They are usually carbonated drinks that contain large amounts of caffeine and sugar with additional ingredients, such as B vitamins, amino acids and herbal stimulants. What they all have in common are added ingredients that ‘do’something extra, such as increase in energy and alertness, nutrition, or even enhanced performance. So will guzzling a can of energy drink suddenly turn you into superman? They contain mainly sugar, caffeine and other ingredients which are believed to increase the stamina and provide you energy. However it is important to remember that unlike sports drinks which contain water and electrolytes, energy drinks can have a ‘crash-and-burn’ effect as the diuretic effect of coffee can leave the body dehydrated. Some of the energy drinks in the country are :

Red Bull Red bull is one of the most popular energy drinks marketed aggressively throughout the world as a performance boosting drink. In contains taurine, glucuronolactone, caffeine, B vitamins, sucrose, phenylalanine, and glucose. While it is quite popular in the US, red bull is banned in countries like Denmark, Norway and in certain German states as well after a sample test revealed traces of cocaine in the product. However, it does figure in the list of energy drinks in India and many other countries. Monster With ingredients like guarana, caffeine and glucose, Monster artificially stimulates energy. With a fairly tolerable taste, this energy drink sparks you up and packs quite a punch.

and promises to lift your spirits and allow you to party all night and even work thirty hours a day. Rockstar This energy drink was formulated in 2001 and is one of the fastest growing drinks in the segment. Besides caffeine, taurine and sugar, rockstar energy drink also contains a variety of herbs like panax ginseng, gingko biloba, milk thistle extract, and guarana seeds. This brand has products that figure in the list of energy drinks with alcohol. People, mostly youth, seem to have discovered that guzzling a can of Red Bull can keep one up all night and energise like nothing else does. Be it a group of youngsters at an all-night dance party, or tired, overworked corporate employees, energy drinks appeal to all. Know what you drink Is a can of energy drink really the magic potion that it is made out to be? Red Bull, one of the most popular energy drinks, contains nearly 80 mg of caffeine per can, about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of brewed coffee and twice the caffeine as a cup of tea. Other energy drinks contain several times this amount. The amount of caffeine in an energy drink isn’t always indicated on the label, so it is difficult to gauge how much one is consuming. Another problem with energy drinks is that unlike hot coffee or tea, which is sipped slowly, it’s common for typical energy drink consumers to drink large amounts quickly. One of the biggest concerns is that we just don’t know enough about the effect of the combination of ingredients in energy drinks. Many ingredients are believed to work synergistically with caffeine to boost its stimulant power. B vitamins are sometimes added to energy drinks in small amounts. It makes energy drinks appear healthy, although they probably contribute little. B vitamins are needed to convert food into energy. We could try all this or just drink down the famous master blaster’s drink - Boost! If only we could get his energy??! - Aishwarya Shankar

The God’s last name is When He plays, the world is at His feet.

T

he Maestro’s strokes are absolute wonders. His play is divine. And when he is on the game even the gates of heaven are closed, as the Gods will be busy watching their cricketing counterpart. No one is unaware of him. Everyone is a fan of him. With the kind of following he has around the world, he is a deity for many of them. He is not just a sportsman, he is a phenomenon. The instant he walks into the stadium, every pair of eyes and hopes will be on him. He has the whole weight of the nation on his shoulders. Yet he is not undulated. Runs continue to come, no matter who is the bowler or the team. Age may have taken its toll on his body, but his passion for the game is undeterred. It’s his simplicity that has taken him to the heights no other batsman would dream of. Sachin – when he plays the whole world watches; when he scores the whole stadium erupts. Being the greatest cricketer ever on the world (no Bradman or Viv Richards for me) could make you haughty but it doesn’t seem to scathe our master. While his records needs a separate page altogether, Sachin has remained his humble self. Playing cricket for 20 years in itself is an achievement but maintaining topclass cricketing throughout is an enormous task. Sachin has shouldered the responsibility of the team and the nation many a time.

When he fails, some want to get their forty seconds of fame and write him off. They say he’s done. They say he hasn’t got it anymore. And every time “they” are proven wrong. He will be done when he says so. And as the country gets ready to celebrate the Little Master’s 37th birthday, exactly two months after the double ton, we pay a tribute. Sachin - The Cricketer How many of us would have faced our friendly neighbor Pakistan at the age of 16? Tendulkar started his international cricket career, both Test and ODI, against Pakistan. Though he didn’t make any impact in the test matches in runs, he did show some nerves by declining medical attention when he was hit in the nose by a bouncer. He continued to bat even when blood was gushing from his nose. And when he made 53 runs off just 18 balls in the exhibition 20-over game in Peshawar, it was just the beginning of a blissful journey. It was in the nineties that Tendulkar raised through the team’s line-up and the hearts of the people. The runs were pouring from all the sides as Sachin continued to send the balls over the boundaries. Though India went down in the semifinal of the 1996 World Cup, Tendulkar was the leading run scorer in the tournament. While the whole world feared the Australian cricket team, Sachin proved they are just mortals. He was at his best against Australia and helped us win matches with both his batting and bowling. In Sharjah, giving Shane Warne nightmares by tormenting his bowling over the ropes, Sachin helped by taking five crucial wickets in a match in the series. Sachin proved his mettle in bowling also and was called upon to break long-running partnerships. He is an all-rounder in bowling, being able to turn the ball both the sides and to bowl medium-pace. Though he captained the team for some time, the role didn’t suit him well and it showed in the team’s poor showing during the period. In 2002, the so-called decline of Sachin began. A row of injuries and inconsistent batting took Sachin off the

Sachin - The Brand Sachin was a pioneer in India when it comes cricket business branding. With the amount of popularity he has, it’s only natural for any company to sign him as their representative. So it was record of sorts when Worldtel signed up a deal with Sachin that was valued at 30 crore rupees in 1995 and over 100 crore rupees in 2000. Sachin has endorsed many famous products that include Pepsi, MRF, Canon, Airtel, Boost, Britannia, Adidas, Reynolds, Reliance Communications, Sunfeast, Aviva, Jaypee Cement, Royal Bank of Scotland and much more. Sachin has become a saleable commodity with kids and adults alike. Experts say that Sachin as a brand will continue to grow selling everything from cars to cements even after his retirement. The poor form in the field also reflected in the brand relationship of Sachin as many companies ended their contracts. But with his return to form, everything is expected to change and fortunes to soar. Sachin personifies the brand value and multiplies its popularity. Adidas has launched ‘Adidas-ST’ cricket range in association with Sachin. They believe that Sachin reflects their ‘Impossible is nothing’ image and are proud to be associated with him. Who can forget ‘Boost is the secret of my energy’ from the Boost ad that gave the brand immense popularity? Many companies feel that there should be absolute connection between the brand value and the person who endorses it and Sachin fills in the requirements. And with his blister-

Getting Greenwashed? Everything isn’t as green as they seem, a check-list to help you find the culprits.

W

ith an increased percentage of green products flooding the market, there is a tendency that consumers might be ‘greenwashed’ into believing that every product out there is actually green! Greenwashing refers to misleading or unsubstantiated claims made by organisations and companies regarding the environmental benefits of their technology, products, operations and services. It is a smokescreen created by a few companies to divert the consumers’ attention away from the reality, by making brazen claims falsely promoting themselves as environmentally responsible. This way companies con consumers into believing that they are better than their competitors. Greenwashing leads consumers into using products and supporting companies that cause further environmental degradation, reducing the quality of living for future generations to come. It prevents us from supporting the real environmentallyresponsible companies and achieving eco efficiency. If knowledge is power then equip yourself with the power to identify and recognise whether the environmental claims are accurate or not. Here are a few tips on how to avoid being ‘greenwashed’. Identifying the con man! Look for products that make meaningful claims. Products making generic claims of being ‘100% natural’ or ‘eco-friendly’ with no proper information or source should be avoided. Avoid products that make irrelevant claims like ‘CFC-free’- if you think about it, CFCs were banned more than 20 years ago. Check labels and read the ingredients to see if the advertisement claims are backed up on the labels. Be cautious of hidden trade-offs. For example, many products today are more

energy-efficient but may still be produced by using hazardous or non-recyclable raw materials. Avoid products where fragrance is a key ingredient as in the case of scented candles or scented tissues. Package power A company that claims to be environmentally responsible can be identified easily through their products’ packaging. It is a key element in communicating a green brand. A company committed to helping the environment will have a packaging that is sustainable, recyclable, biodegradable and minimal. A product may be advertised as being green, but if the packaging is big, bulky or non –biodegradable, it is like taking a backward step! Is it really picture-perfect? Product packaging containing pretty pictures of nature or earth-friendly colours can be misleading. For instance, a packaging containing the picture of a forest or a lake does not mean that the product inside is green! Certain products may be advertised as having 25 percent more recycled contents or 25 percent less wastage but what is not informed to consumers that these products are 25 percent more or less in comparison to ‘what’ or ‘which!’. Check and then check again! If you have any doubts about a company’s impact on the environment, call up and ask for more information. If their environmental claims are true, many companies will be able to provide you with the information easily. In case you feel the piece of information provided to you is not satisfactory, ask for more details. For example, if a company states that it will plant a tree for each of its products

purchased, ask where the trees are being planted and what they will be used for. Following the money trail of companies that are donors to political parties, think tanks and agencies is a great way to gain a better insight. Also check the company’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) report for making analysis. Most manufacturing giants will have their own versions of these reports that can be found on their official websites. Environmental certification Make sure that product that claim to be organic are backed up by certification from the environmental agency of the central government. Identify companies whose infrastructures like offices and manufacturing plants have LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental design) certification. Achieving this certification provides a form of validation to the company’s committment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Companies that have been certified with ISO 14000 have effective environment management systems in place thus minimising their impact on the environment. Read up and research A number of websites and blogs are present on the net that are devoted to pressing environmental issues such as greenwashing. Consumers are just a click away from gaining access to the information about companies that engage in greenwashing. Checking out the company’s website will give you all the information of their products and environmental policies. It is beneficial for consumers to have access of submissions and letters made to politicians and government agencies by companies. This way you can identify whether certain companies are actually supporting

the environmental laws or weakening the existing ones. It is important to have an understanding of greenwashing that will help you evaluate and make more informed purchases. - Sagar S

ndia accounts for over 10 per cent of the world’s fruit production and about 56 per cent of mango production. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Gujarat together contribute about 82 per cent of the country’s mango output. Nutrition experts advise that fruits and vegetables should make up a large portion of one’s daily food intake since they are low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fibre. But the question is, are the good looking fruits that we see in the markets biologically ripened or artificially ripened? If you are not careful, the luscious looking fruits may drive you to the doctor rather than keeping the doctor away. Consumers may recall newspaper reports exactly a year ago about how people in Ambattur, Avadi and other suburbs developed allergic reaction after eating mango fruits. Swollen face, stomach upset and giddy feeling were some of the problems brought to the notice of hospitals. The sickness in most cases lasted two days. Asked about the causes, health officials said the method of ripening of fruits was to blame. According to wholesale dealers, artificial riperning of fruits is mostly resorted to when the season begins due to the craving for such fruits, but as the season progresses, biologically ripened fruits would flood the markets and hence no one need have any misgiving about artificial ripening of mangoes in the months of May or June. But opinion differs on this claim since some traders say this theory would have to be accepted with a pinch of salt. Artificial ripening gives quick results. It is done throughout the season since it helps faster offtake and sales while it takes days for raw mango to ripen by natural process, aver these traders. Ethylene and acetylene Fruit ripening is largely due to a plant hormone called ethylene, which is a gas. Most fruits give off ethylene even as they ripen. Ethylene production increases as

temperature rises, which is why fruits ripen quicker in the summer than the winter.

focus

I

How is artificial ripening done? Is this method confined to mango only or other fruits? How to find out whether a fruit is artificially ripened? Fruit sellers ripen these fruits with calcium carbide, a chemical. It contains traces of arsenic and phosphorous and thus use of this chemical is illegal. This white powder once dissolved in water produces acetylene which is the essential gas for ripening. Apparently it has the same effect as the plant hormone ethylene but acetylene is harmful to our nervous system. The compound is also used for welding purposes. Apart from calcium carbide, another chemical, Ethyril is widely used by fruit-sellers. Ethyril is sprayed on raw mangoes and covered with a gunny bag. The next day they turn yellow. Presence of even traces of arsenic and phosphorous in carbide makes healthy fruits poisonous. One can distinguish artificially ripenened fruits by the uniform skin colour in fruits like tomato, mango, papaya etc and in the case of banana, the stem will be green while the fruit will have yellow colour. An agricultural scientist said that ripening of fruits with certain less harmful chemicals such as ethepon was permissible, but calcium carbide would cause health problems and it was saddening that most fruit traders used it without any fear. Wash the fruits The Regional Analytical Laboratory (RAL) in Ernakulam recently found out that similar to calcium carbide usage in mango trade, the pesticide Benzene Hexa Chloride (BHC) was beyond the permissible limits in samples of grapes. That is why it is advisable to wash the fruits

before consumption. Even as this Correspondent was penning this report, a friend in Mumbai sent an alert regarding the problem of artificial ripening widely resorted to by sellers in his Metro. He warns use of calcium carbide powder for quick ripening may even cause cancer. How to check this? When you buy mango, see if any whitish powder sticks to your palm and smell it. If you get an irritable odour, then you can conclude it is chemically ripened. Regular contact can cause burning sensation in eyes and skin. Contiuued exposure will result in severe mouth, nose and throat irritation and sores, cough and wheezing. Calcium Carbide is a flammable and reactive chemical. Every year, the authorities raid shops and destroy lorry loads of artificially ripened mango fruits, but still unscrupulous traders continue this practice with impunity in order to make a quick buck.. -Correspondent

S mart Grocery Shopping List the items you need to buy. Do not shop with toddlers if you want to save time. Once you are at the store, stick to the items on the list and avoid impulse buying. Just as overeating, overspending may upset monthly finances.

12

Tips

Never buy stationery at shops that deal mostly in groceries. They may be a little expensive there. Pay close attention to all sale tags and offers such as 2 for Rs.200 or 2 for Rs 125 and so on.

Use cash and not a credit/debit card to avoid overspending.

Be polite, not rude while pointing out pricing mistakes or date expired items. A smile always helps.

At home, designate a notebook, notepad, or a sticky note that is strictly for the grocery list. Put it prominently so that everyone will see it and make entries.

Always check the bill for any error before you pay. It is humar to err. You can get it rectified.

Private bank’s action held unfair The Delhi Consumer Commission has termed as ‘unfair trade practice’ the action of a private bank in putting the name of a credit card holder in the loan defaulters’ list despite his having settled all disputed amounts. The Commission headed by Justice J D Kapoor awarded Rs 50,000 compensation to the bank customer. Mr Bijay Kumar Dash, a retired Officer had applied for a loan from a nationalised bank, but was shocked to learn that his name was mentioned in Credit Information Bureau India Ltd (CIBIL) defaulters’ list, despite having settled all the disputes with the Citibank. Mr Dash approached the Commission seeking compensation for “irreparable” loss to his reputation and directions to the bank for removing his name from the defaulters list. The Commission termed the practice as “defamatory as the bank had no business to take its dispute with the customer to other banks and tell that he was a defaulter and therefore loan should not be given”. It ordered payment of compensation to the customer.

Insurance Co. to pay compensation In a recent Right to Information case, the Central Information Commissioner (CIC) asked the United India Insurance Company Ltd (UIICL) to pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 and imposed a penalty of Rs 22,000 on an official for dereliction of duty. The complainant Attar had opted for a household policy of UIICL in 2004. In 2007, the company and its agent were allegedly late in collecting Attar’s cheque for the policy’s premium from his home. A few days later, the UIICL returned the cheque, telling Attar that the policy had lapsed due to a delay in paying the premium. Attar filed an RTI query with the division office-7, Mumbai. But there was no reply. On December 17, 2007, Attar filed a second appeal with the CIC. The commission sought a reply from the respondents, who claimed to have never got any such application. After a series of hearings, the commissioner said the senior divisional manager had got an RTI query on September 16, 2007. Though he had the requisite information from the agent concerned on September 29, 2007, the information was forwarded to CPIO, regional office on Dec 27, 2007. Thus, there was a delay of 88 days on the part of the Divisional Office, the commissioner said and passed the order.

is for zeal Your dream of an affordable high-performance sports car comes true with 370Z.

I

n the year 1969, a new breed of sports car was born. Christened with the name, Z, Nissan’s baby grew up to become a powerful car. The next level of evolution has come in the form of 370Z. This is the most commanding car in the Z series with a 3.7 liter engine. Nissan’s Z series cars have always been noted for one important factor – high-performance at an affordable price tag. Nissan’s Z series holds the record for best selling sports car series of all time and that should give you an idea of what to expect in the 370Z. Launched in 2009, 370Z has been redesigned from the 350Z in every part and component. In 2010, the sixth generation Z makes its way to India. Sheer style! The streamlined, muscular profile of the 370Z gives a ready-to-soar stance. Boomerang shaped headlamps and tail lights add style and substance to the Z’s belligerent design. Bi-xenon highintensity discharge headlamps provide long-range illumination to the darkest of the roads. And with the headlampwashers, you don’t have to worry about poor visibility in any weather condition. The aggressive front grill only enhances the already macho form of the 370Z. To the rear, the spoiler makes for the sporty look with high mounted LEDs providing additional braking warning. On the sides, you have the side-turning lights with Z logo on them and vertical door handles. The 19-inch forged alloy wheels add to the style quotient. To conclude, the very appearance of the Z will make your time freeze on the road.

The interiors are designed to give a whole new feel to the driver and the passenger. The solid construction and high quality of materials used is evident to the naked eye. Comfortable seats and the upholstery make you feel at home. The scooped up instrument panel and the illumination keeps you pleasant for a great drive. The triple meter instrument cluster is made of a large tachometer in the center with the speedometer and multi-information display to its sides. The steering wheel can be tilted along with the instrument cluster for the best possible driving position. In the middle of the dashboard, three gauges are lined up revealing time, voltage and oil temperature. Storage comes in the form of cup-holders in the doors and center console, dash-mounted storage and luggage room in the rear. The 370Z features an 8-speaker BOSE sound system with 6-CD player and subwoofer. Feel the power The 370Z comes in two variants - Touring Coupe MT and Touring Coupe AT. Both the variants are powered by the same 3.7L, 3696cc, DOHC V6, CVVTCS (Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System) with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology petrol engine. The 3.7 liter VQ V6 engine delivers an astounding 333 PS of road ripping power at 7000 rpm and a maximum of torque of 363 Nm at 5200 rpm. The VVEL system improves the efficiency of airflow through the cylinder, thus in turn improving respon-

siveness, optimising the balance between power and performance. It also helps in lower fuel consumption and cleaner emission. The engine with its longer and flatter torque curve delivers smooth acceleration and outstanding throttle response. The 370Z can clock 100 kmph in 5.1 seconds that is way more than impressive. Seamless shifting is provided by the 6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic transmission. The 6-speed manual transmission is the world’s first to feature the SynchroRev Match mode that simplifies gear shifting at the touch of a button. So what is SynchroRev? Many of you may have experienced that while changing the gears up or down, if a tad faster or slower, there will be some miss in the rev of the engine. To regulate that acceleration or deceleration smoothly, the system will ‘blip’ the throttle to the optimum engine rpm as you let out the clutch. Quick and efficient shifting is enabled by the short shift lever that keeps the wrist movement to a minimum. The SynchroRev mode not only helps you to handle the sports car efficiently but is also sure to bring out the racer in you. Automatic 7-speed transmission comes with one manual mode and paddle shifters. With 7 speeds and a manual mode, you get to experience seamless shifting and break-neck speed cruising whenever you want it. And with the manual mode, the quick shifts with the lever or the paddle shifters will provide you with comfortable and fuelefficient driving. When it comes to controlling it, the 370Z transforms your thoughts exactly the way you want it. The 370Z’s doublewishbone

front suspension handles steering changes with lightning fast response while the multilink suspension assists the large tyres in maintaining road contact at maximum. The high-performance ripple control along with the dual-flow-path design and internal rebound springs, the shock absorbers improve performance and handling. Turn the corners with unrelenting confidence and razor sharp control. And if something’s comes your way unexpectedly, the combination of 4-piston aluminum calipers with link-type brake pedal provides you with the ultimate braking power. In safe hands The high-end sports car also features high-end safety features. ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist system contributes to safe driving by enhancing braking control and optimizing braking performance with different loads. Dual front, side and curtain SRS airbags helps in reducing injury in impact. The 370Z is also loaded with Vehicle Dynamic Control system. It enhances stability when its sensors detect if the vehicle is slipping due to steering, braking or acceleration by controlling braking and engine output. At around Rs.53 lakhs, ex-showroom price, the 370Z surely pass for an affordable sports car. High-performance, great design and superior control makes the 370Z the ultimate choice for the sports car enthusiasts. If power and style is your preference, don’t look beyond the Z. - Bala Subramaniam

It is perhaps an understatement if I said the car blew my mind away. he made a dramatic debut in ‘Kedi’ opposite Ravi Krishna several years ago. And before you knew it, this gorgeous, leggy lass had made it big in the Telugu industry. Her recent hit ‘Kick’ took the Telugu industry by storm and is even being remade in Tamil with Tamannaah and Jeyam Ravi. Now the buzz is that actor Ileana is looking at some Tamil projects and may soon be the next big thing in Tamil cinema. We catch up for a candid quick chat on her breezy visit to the city…

Actress ileana

on sets

l i g h t . c a m e r a . a c t i o n

Being ileana! What brings you to Chennai? I am here to support my choreographer friends - Shobi and Lalitha masters at the opening of their Ibo dance studio. I wasn’t a good dancer when I joined the industry and Lalitha really helped me out. Why haven’t we seen more of you in Tamil cinema? I need to get good offers. I have been extremely busy in the Telugu industry. I have met directors and seen scripts but nothing has excited me so far. I had liked one script of director Vikram Kumar, but that’s not happening right now. I guess I am more known in Telugu and that has kept me busy. And also I am choosy about films. It’s still a very male dominated industry and good roles are few and far between. Did you refuse the offer for Sultan the Warrior? Yes, the role was offered to me but Soundarya and I mutually decided that I would do another film later. You see, they were not going to use my face for the animation. So what would be the point of doing a role like that? Are you interested in a Bollywood career? The platform is very big as the world gets to see you. If I get a really good offer I will do it. When are the wedding bells ringing? I am too young, just 24! I can’t see myself married right now! I am more interested in acting, singing, designing and fashion right now. If you weren’t an actor what would you have been? I always wanted to start my own band. But I need a lot more training for it so I am staying away from it right now! - Rinku Gupta

Know Me Better A taste of Chennai : I just adore the way sambar tastes here when mixed with rice! Yummy! Cuisine I love : Mughlai, Chinese, Italian - I love it all. I just gorge on spicy food. I love dark bitter chocolate but I am not a desserts person. After dark : I am in bed by 9.30 pm. I am a very boring person. I guess that’s why I’m still single! I hate discs and have only been to one so far!

Unforgettable ‘Madras’ : A party at Fisherman’s cove on my co-star Tamannaah’s experience birthday while shooting my first Tamil film. I just fell in love with the place. My fitness secret : I work out regularly in my room. I got this workout CD from the US and it’s real good fun. I also enjoy swimming.
