Take a Rain Check! We tell you how to party at ECR...

C

hennai-ites have completely revamped their idea of a weekend retreat in the last decade. Earlier perhaps, they would be found on the beach with their close knit friends circle, or at a restaurant, spending time with their family or even in a private party. Today this is gradually shifting gears and Chennai is geared up for some crazy, dazzling weekend fun. Yes, the party culture has swept the city in the last few years and has proved to be spreading like nothing but wild fire. While talking about parties and an unimaginable nightlife, the first thing that comes to one’s mind, quite indisputably is the most happening East Coast Road. A road that connects the city’s new found hub, Besant Nagar and the most classic weekend getaway, Pondicherry, this one has a lot in store for all. Called the potpourri highway, its charm is absolutely enough reason to party hard. That complete feel! Are you the one who counts that cool cocktail to be the feel-good factor in your weekend party? Then the ECR has a lot of things that you could explore and enjoy wonderfully. The sea has tales to keep you occupied through your exotic drinks, and trust me, it is like a layer of icing on the delicious chocolate cake; to witness the waves and the

beauty of the sea as you get intoxicated mildly with some fabulous drinks. 9 feet high, the only ocean bar, ought to be your pick. This resto-bar has not just an enviable collection of international liquor, but also some delectable mock tails that you can splurge into. Of course coupled with some lip smacking global cuisine, this just offers the best ambience and attitude for that unbeatable weekend of fun. Quite along the same lines is the seductive Maritimes Tales, the bar at the GRT Temple Bay that is designed to kill by looks. This one has some splendid alcoholic drinks, brought from across the seas. All you have to do is sink into your couch and relax as you enjoy the beauty of the sea and the sense of the drink. EC41 is yet another bay view bar along this road that is packed on weekends; a typical and the most trendiest discotheques, this one draws in the hardcore party crowd as the loud music invites them to a place that will promise an unforgettable weekend filled with some jive and drinks of course. So all of you who want that chilled glass by you as you have fun, this is the place you have got to be in; a place that pronounces your ultimate fun and relaxation guide.

Steal it with a ‘Stole’! Call it a fling, a wrap, or a stole - this formless piece of accessory is back in vogue.

W

oven in various enticing patterns and fabrics, a stole can perfectly complement any ensemble – whether formal or casual. No matter what its shape is, a long rectangle or a perfect square, you’ll just adore how a stole drapes around your body while adding a glam quotient to your clothes. So try it on before you step out this summer, and you are sure to define your own style. Know your style With summer in its full glory, head wraps and neck wraps are an everyday sight. And so is the trend of this season: ‘stole’. A stole is a narrower version of a shawl. Around 5-6 feet in length, the width of a stole varies from 2-4 feet. Designed in different styles to meet the demand of its varied customers, stoles are available in numerous varieties of patterns ranging from plain to checks, stripes, embellishments and prints. Depending upon the occasion and attire, you can choose from silk, satin, chiffon, georgette, khadi or cotton fabrics. Most of these fabrics go well with any dress if you choose the style well. Before you reach out for your own collection of stoles this season, here are a few things that you should know. Which one to wear and where? Stoles are well-suited with both formal and casual wear clothes. Still a hang out with friends, a date, or a walk along the city - casual occasions like this offer you a chance to experiment much more with this fashion accessory. For such outings, drape cotton stole around the neck with a casual v-neck tee or throw a printed chiffon/georgette stole loosely around the shoulders. Match lighter colour stoles with dark shades like red, blue or black and mix the other way round with clothes of lighter hues. For a formal daytime affair, you can team up a neutral colour shirt or formal blouse with a plain or printed stole in a brighter colour. It would add sophistication, while providing an ultra modern appeal to your look. Slightly smaller sized silk and satin stoles are well-suited for such look. Also, a stole is just appropriate with a dress that has a strapless neckline or spaghetti straps. You can make a statement with a bold colour stole over a simple and well fitted dress at any party. Try a

crochet stole with your evening dress to add grace to your overall appearance. Stoles can also work well with kurtis. If you want to redefine ethnicity, carry an embellished or banarasi silk stole either on one shoulder or wrap it around your neck. Drape it well Not just the right pattern, how you carry a stole is also equally important to create the right impact. - With formal tops and shirts, smaller stoles work well. You can either let your stole hang forward from both ends, or just tie a simple knot in the front. Don’t forget to pleat the knot well to complete the formal look. When wearing a formal top, you can also wrap your stole neck to neck, such that the ends don’t fall at all. - For a more casual effect, wrap your stole around the neck once and then let both ends hang free in the front or carry it in the most conventional way leaving one end in the front and the other at the back from over the shoulder. - For a ‘by the beach’ feel, tie it around your hair and let the knotted ends fall on to your shoulder.

showcase stoles with exquisite designs and colours in silk, cotton, raw silk and pashmina .The price range varies from Rs. 150 to Rs. 1500 depending upon the fabric and design. Raw silk stoles available for Rs. 300 -350 are interesting to match both casual and ethnic outfits. Checkered patterned stoles (priced at Rs. 200-250) are great to complement your jeans - t-shirt look. You can also try the fringed silk stoles available here to go with your traditional get-up.

Chennai’s much famous ‘Pondy bazaar’. The stole works - even in its simplest form, it adds a dash to your outfits. And as it seems this trend is here to stay, leaving no reason why you should not ward off the summer breezes with a casual, lightweight wrap. So try out the different patterns and mark your own style with one of the coolest crazes in fashion this summer. -Priyanshika Sharma

Moreover, you can check out the stoles collection at Fab-india outlets, or visit the

What’s in trend? Fashion stoles can significantly enhance your casual appeal. Printed stoles in chiffon fabrics are much in hype this summer. You can add zing to your wardrobe with abstract, floral or animal prints or play with the ‘much-in-demand’ checkered patterns available in cotton stoles. Lavender, tomato red, champagne pink, shades of coral, yellow and aqua are the colours for this summer. Stoles in these colours can add a splash of sunshine to your wardrobe. Best buy in town Head to Spencer’s Plaza situated at Anna Salai and you will find several shops offering stoles to suit your need. The shops here

Men in stoles Stoles are often thought as a piece of women’s accessory. But this is far from the truth. From runaways to city streets, men’s stoles have indeed made a mark with fashion conscious men. Trendy and stylish this summer, men’s stoles are worn around the neck in multiple wraps or with a single knot. Pick up from a huge array of patterns available. Some 2-3 stoles in your wardrobe would match a majority of the elements. If you still don’t have one, it’s surely the time to get going.

Tales

This summer, go beyond the ordinary! studio and the private quarters. The Diamond Museum

I

t is the holiday season again and if you are looking for a place to escape far away from the scorching sun, pollution and sweat, Antwerp may well be your Utopia. Antwerp in Belgium is the diamond capital of the world. Apart from diamonds, the city is also famous for its age-old architecture, shopping districts, excellent restaurants, bars and clubs. In fact in the 16th and 17th century, Antwerp was home to great masters such as Rubens and Anthony Van Dyck.

Places to visit in Antwerp Rubens House Peter Paul Rubens is one of the most famous painters of Antwerp. The palacelike residence located in Wapper Square and studio where Rubens worked and lived from 1616 until his death in 1640 is now the one of the city’s most visited museums. Rubens bought the house in early 17th century. Influenced by Italian architecture, he remodeled the building into an Italianesque palazzo. Visitors can walk through the garden and visit both the

The Runaway ride! The holiday season is about to end, a trip down ECR might just give it the perfect finish!

I

t’s probably the most popular and most favourite road among Chennaiites today. Despite the traffic, speed brakers and the traffic police who catch you for speeding, East Coast Road does have a magic attached to it. This weekend, as we explored the stretch starting from the Thiruvanmiyur bus terminus all the way upto Puducherry, we found that there are way too many things to do on this side of the city. So, we narrowed it down and here are the top 25 spots that made it our list: Marundeeswarar Temple This is the biggest vanmiyur built Shiva who form of

temple in Thirufor Lord takes the Lord

Marundeeswarar. Built almost 1200 years ago, the Lord in this temple is believed to have the power to heal all ailments. A padal petra stalam, saivite saints Nayanmars Appar and Sambandar sang in praise of Lord Shiva in this temple. Nurseries aplenty If you are looking at setting up a garden or just adding on to your collection, the options are aplenty down this stretch. From rose saplings to landscaping solutions, you’ll find it all here. Paintball fun Put up near the Bella Ciao restaurant by Planet Adventure, this place is sure to get your adrenalin up and about. Go on and add some colour to your life! Five Star Classic Where do get Italian pasta sauce? Where can I buy freshly baked French croissants? Or where can I get goat cheese? All of this, and all the other International and national food and beverage brands are available at this famous spot. In fact, the spot became famous because of the chaat waala and biriyani men who stir up some local delicacies outside the store. D’Hut Find a variety of masks and everything else culturally rich and diverse, yet contemporary in style. It showcases an exclusive range of gift items, incense sticks, candles, mirrors, wall hangings and other decorations from literally around the world. Singapore Shoppe This two-storied building is probably the first ‘complete shopping centre’ on ECR. Everything from infant needs to elderly diapers can be bought in this store. The majority of goods in the store are imported, but the price is pocket-friendly and it’s also got ready-to-eat instant food on the racks. Hot Chips For several years there was no fast food chain on

ECR and those that opened could not sustain, for strange reasons like ‘no car parking space’. Then Hot Chips emerged and today it has expanded to provide a multi-cuisine restaurant here. Weekend or weekday Hot Chips serves the best filter coffee and dosas and as usual, there is always a queue. Prarthana Drive-In Theatre The only drive-in theatre in the city and the only place to watch your favorite movie on a one-of-a-kind giant concrete screen of 4500 sq.ft. To top it all, it is probably the only theatre to have maintained its ticket prices! A fantastic ‘family outing’ option for the summer! More than the movie, go for experience of sitting together as a family, watching a film and enjoying a home-cooked meal! Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Everyone seems to have heard of this temple, yet many have never been here. Quietly tucked in the lane right after Prarthana Drive In Theatre, this Shirdi Sai Baba temple is located very close to the beach. Please make note, rather than Thursday, it’s very crowded on Sundays too. The Antique Clock Dealer Here’s a man who sells antique clocks, on a very modern and state of the art road. But he sells and he attracts many passers-by. He has clocks which are older than him, yet are in crisp working condition. Drop in and say a “hi!” to Dr. Salam’s collections @Pannaiyur. Cholamandal Artists’ Village Established in 1996, Cholamandal Artists’ Village is today India’s largest self-supporting artists’ village and one of the most successful in Asia, presenting spectacular contemporary art in varied forms. It has over 20 resident painters and sculptors, who run the Artists Handicrafts Association, a co-operative which manages the village and sale of works which includes paintings, sketches, terracotta/stone/metal sculptures, batiks and handi-

Dakshinachitra

Coming to this temple is believed to grant blissful matrimony to devotees. The legend of this temple is that when Kalava Maharishi was perplexed about getting his 360 girl children married off, he prayed to Lord Vishnu to show him a way. So the Lord came down to the earth everyday for one whole year as a bachelor and married all his 360 girls, one each day.

An attempt to preserve and narrate the south India culture and lifestyle is what Dakshinachitra attempts. It stops at the most important and popular tourist spots en route and if you are interested you can get off and look around. Standards for Tyres and Tubes

k n o w . s p e a k . a c t

Some say that imported tyres do not meet safety standards and will not suit Indian road conditions. This is not true as a good tyre with the correct speed rating will perform as good as any top brand product. Anyway, unless one is sure, it is best to stick to known Indian brands. In order to allay such fears, a certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been made mandatory for all types of automotive tyres and tubes with effect from May 18. All types of tyres and tubes for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars and commercial vehicles would have to carry BIS marking. According to Mr K. Anbarasu, Deputy Director General, BIS, Southern Region, tyre manufacturers would have to conform to four different standards — IS 15627, IS 15633, IS15636 and IS 13098 — depending on the category of tyres and tubes. This certification will not only ensure consumer safety but also the quality of tyres and tubes (particularly the

imported ones) put on sale in the market. Testing for the certification of the tyres will be done at three laboratories. They are Indian Rubber Manufacturers Research Association (IRMRA), Thane, Central Institute of Road Transport, Pune and Automotive Research Association of India, Pune. Manufacturers have to send applications along with test report for approval by BIS officials. The licence would be valid for a year. Specification for Automotive vehiclesPneumatic tyres for two and threewheeled motor vehicles - IS 15627 Automotive vehicles-Pneumatic tyres for passenger car vehicles – Diagonal and radial ply- IS 15633 Automotive vehicles-Pneumatic tyres for commercial vehicles - Diagonal and radial ply- IS 15636 Automotive vehicles-Tubes for Pneumatic Tyres - IS 13098 A Government notification regarding manufacture, sale, distribution of tyres says: “ No person shall by himself or through any person on his behalf, manufacture, import, store for sale, sell or distribute Pneumatic Tyres which do not conform to the Specified Standard and which do not bear the Standard Mark of

the Bureau on obtaining Certification marks licence.”

All imported tyres and tubes will now need BIS marking as well as BIS approval. The BIS decision will ensure that the sale of inferior quality imported tyre and tubes is automatically eliminated. India imports tyres and tubes mainly from China, Korea, Japan and Thailand among other countries. An official of the Transport engineering division of BIS said that keeping in mind India’s road conditions, climate and safety, the Union Government had taken steps for standardisation of tyres and tubes. Analysts say the move is designed to block cheap goods being dumped in the Indian markets. Imported tyres constitute about 22 lakh units whereas domestic production for the after-market is at 1.8 million tyres a year. Kolkta-based Dunlop says the move could lead to a rise in prices in the shortterm. Basically, it is a quality and standardisation issue that will be beneficial for the consumer and the industry in the long-run.

The Andhra Pradesh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (APSCDRC) recently pulled up a Vijayawada-based vehicle dealer for trying to back out from the discount offer he had made in an advertisement. In that advertisement published in March 2005, the dealer had announced a deduction of Rs. 5,000 in the price of a new motorbike for exchange of a used two-wheeler. In order to avail himself of this exchange offer, D. Brahmandam, a resident of Nuzvid, Krishna district, bought a new vehicle from the dealer on March 31, 2005. However, at the time of billing, he found that instead of the announced deduction, he was given a discount of only Rs. 1,550. When this was pointed out, the dealer refused to pay the remaining amount, The buyer then took the issue to the District Consumer Forum, Vijayawada.

good motorist knows that getting a double pair of quality tyres for the car is as important as selecting the car itself. Certainly, good quality tyres ensure riding comfort and the desired speed. The quality of the tyre is determined by its grip on road. Therefore, one has to be extra cautious while choosing tyres of the right type.

The District Forum allowed the petition as it found that the dealer was trying to go back on the promised exchange price. The Foum asked him to pay the consumer a sum Rs. 12,750 and also Rs. 1,000 towards court costs within a month. The dealer contested the District Forum’s decision at APSCDRC. But the State Commission upheld the order of Krishna District Consumer Forum and dismissed the appeal filed by the dealer. The State Commission also termed the dealer’s stand as unfair business practice.

Tips For Upkeep Of Tyres - Check the air pressure of all tyres once a fortnight. - Inflate tyres to specified pressures. Incorrect tyre pressure or uneven pressure in wheels can damage the inner lining of the tyres. - Underinflated tyres have a higher rolling resistance which means higher fuel consumption. - If a tyre is visibly damaged or has an unusual wear pattern, it must be examined as quickly as possible. - Rotate the tyres at regular intervals (every 3000km - 5000km), to prolong tyre life. - It is advisable to get wheel balance checked after every 10,000 km. - If you notice vibration of the steering wheel, it could be due to a damage in tyre.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in cooperation with Family Dollar Stores Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., is announcing the voluntary recall of 1.8 million toy dart gun sets, due to an aspiration hazard. CPSC and Family Dollar have received reports of two asphyxiation deaths involving a 9-year-old boy in Chicago, Ill. and a 10-year-old boy in Milwaukee, Wis.

Nissan Vehicles Nissan is planning to recall about 135,000 of its 2005 and 2006 model year Infiniti G35 sedans and coupes, due to a faulty passenger air bag.. The wire harness underneath the front passenger seat has been found to deteriorate, which will cause a delay – or complete loss – in the signal to the air bag. In the event of a crash, the air bag may not deploy. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported to date, said a company spokesman. Nissan will begin notifying owners in June with recall information and repair instructions. Nissan recommends owners take their car to a local dealer if the red air bag warning light has turned on in their vehicle.

The Great Indian Road Trip Hitting the highway? Here’s how to start off on a hassle-free trip.

S

Standing on a road that looks like it’s never been travelled before, your car’s radiator is spurting heat waves deficient of water. And the radiator’s not the only thing that is fuming. Accompanying is your better half, not so better at the time. Adding on to the ire are the kids, complaining that they had premonitions about exactly what is happening at present. And you, irritated with yourself and all things around. This is a common scenario that most of you, well mostly married men, experience while going on a road trip. So to change the shoddily directed scene to a well crafted one, let us just go back to our school days and remember what was taught on our scout camps: “Be prepared”. Whatever be the case, it is always best or better than the best to prepare you for the consequences. Be proactive and get things under your control rather than the other way around. Road trips are for enjoying with your loved ones and getting some entertainment, and not to wait in the middle of nowhere. A small mistake of overlooking and pure negligence will cost you more than just money.

Here’s a checklist for your car before you hit the roads - Check the oil levels. Be it for engine, or brake or transmission, get the fluids levelled up. Replace oil filters, engine coolant filter etc. - Refill engine coolants and radiator, according to the service manual. - Replace the worn out wires and check for loose connections in battery. Also look out for loose clamps and hoses. - Make sure that the headlights, tail-lights, and the indicators are working fine. - Rains are back again. So don’t forget to check windshield wipers. Fog lights are also a necessity, especially if you are planning on touring a hilly terrain. - Pressure can be off you but not the tyres. Check tyre pressures including the spare one and replace them if needed. - Check and update your vehicle registration, driving licence, insurance documents and anything that will make you spend time with the uniforms explaining that everything from the car and in it is yours. - Have a first-aid kit, basic tools kit, maps, and mobile chargers. Your mobile can be short of signal bars but not the batteries’.

Follow Traffic Rules

- Get some extra clothing, food and water. Let us blame fun for dehydration ,not water. - Always have sufficient money, both paper and plastic. - Music CDs/DVDs that will prevent you from the boredom of dull driving. - Video/Still cameras to capture the moments that can be lived again virtually. The list will go on. But the basic remains the same. Road trips are to let you out from your routine work and personal life and to reward yourself with peace of mind. Hence the planning on where to go plays a major role. You can go to the regular hill stations, beaches, and strut yourself with several thousand. Else you can be a bit different and visit the places that are less known but exotic and which will give you a refreshingly different experience. Get prior knowledge on the routes for your trip. Maps come in every shape and size. Or go the high-tech route and get a GPS device fitted and connected in your ride. If that burns a hole in your pocket, there’s always our Google Maps, readyto-use in most of the mobiles. Road trips

Wear your Seat Belts

are not complete without something silly happening here and there throughout. Be sure to capture the action with your cameras. Learn about the places that you can go en route to your destination. Always keep a check on your fuel gauge. Let’s keep that needle living like us, not drying up. Entertainment quotients are important. But let us not allow the mini LCD screen and blaring music to be a distraction on the move. Go ahead and enjoy your road trip the way it is meant to be. Bon voyage! - Balasubramaniam N

Going Rustic T

l i g h t . c a m e r a . a c t i o n

hough it was a small start with ‘Pughaipadam’ , he got noticed among a group of actors. That was way before Nanda Perisamy’s ‘Mathi Yosi’ showed audience of his ability to transform into a rustic guy from the urban character he played in his first film. Now in the recently released Global Infotainment Network’s ‘Goripalayam’, actor Harish goes full steam ahead. He plays a Madurai-based rowdy who leads a violent life and has got the audiences raving over his performance. We catch up with the young actor to see how his career is shaping up … How did you get an entry into films? My father Ga-

nesh Kumar was a film editor who has worked with K Balachander in over 170 films. Films have been in my blood since childhood and I have seen hundreds of films on my dad’s editing table! I was interested in being an actor right from when I was eight years old. After my tenth class, I took up every coaching an actor would need – like martial arts, dance at Kala masters dance school and I even did Bharathanatyam for a year. I trained in Kalari too and always maintained my physique, preparing for the day I’ll foray into films! I got my first break with director Rajeshlingam’s college story called ‘Pughaipadam’. He was a former assistant of Selvaraghavan. Then ‘Mathi Yosi’ happened and people started noticing me as an actor at last!

That was very different from my debut and was set in a village backdrop; it was about four violent young boys and the fate they meet in life. What is ‘Goripalayam’ about? It’s directed by Rasumaduravan who directed ‘Mayandi Kudumbathar’ earlier. I play a boy called Azhagar who is into ganja, gangs etc and is a complete hooligan. The film is about how kids take parents as ideals but turn into bad elements when their emotional needs are not taken care of. You have done a spirited dance number in the film. Tell us about it Yes, it was choreographed by Sridhar master. In fact I had fever during the shoot and had to do it straight without rehearsals. But it has come out very well. I guess my years of training came in handy!

What sort of plans do you have for yourself in cinema? I have no big plans as such. I have been lucky to get good breaks and work with good directors and producers so far. I want to be known as a good actor and would like to do memorable roles. Whatever I do, I want to do well and get a place in the audience’s mind. So far the response has been excellent and very encouraging. My dream to act has finally come true! - Rinku Gupta
