LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: A magazine is only as good as the team that surrounds it, whether the staff, advertisers or other partners. One of my first goals as Associate Publisher of OMG! Magazine was to create alliances, and partnerships with well respected brands across the country. During my tenure in Florida, I was able to create friendships spanning a variety of industries, from hospitality to fashion to nightlife. I am pleased to announce that OMG! Magazine has now aligned with two fashion partners: Saks 5th Avenue and Macy’s. All of these companies are on the cutting edge of fashion and have agreed to contribute to the growth of our publication. Whether you are looking for the spring collection of Theory or the hottest trends from INC International Concepts, these stores are your one-stop shop this season. Furthermore, OMG! has revamped its distribution. Beginning with the March issue of the publication, OMG! is now found in the Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott in Orlando as well as a host of other locations in the stylish Thornton Park neighborhood. The Ritz-Carlton in Palm Beach has also agreed to carry our magazine in their fabulous Eau Spa. Those who have not visited the spa yet are in for a treat. Read about their newest facial treatment later in this issue. Our magazine can now be found at Compass in West Palm Beach, the Pride Center at Equality Park in Wilton Manors as well as Out Central in Nashville and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce in South Beach. Steve Adkins and the entire team at the MDGLCC have been wonderful to work with, and we look forward to a continued partnership with them in the upcoming months. Expanding our distribution is an attempt to reach a broader readership base and attract the attention of a wide variety of advertisers. March also marked the beginning of our distribution to Nashville, Tennessee, the country music capital of the world. We will celebrate our arrival into Music City with a launch party at Play Dance Bar on Saturday, April 9. Keith Blaydes and the entire team at Play have been extremely supportive, and we are excited about how much the Nashville community has embraced OMG! To show that OMG! is more than a just a regional publication, we ventured out to Palm Springs, California last month in an effort to showcase their wonderful city to our readers. The people of Palm Springs were more than gracious to let us into their world as you will read in this publication. In addition, I would like to welcome a few people to the OMG! team. First, Cole Wakefield from Nashville will be our new travel reporter. Steven Youngstein from New York will be contributing a new advice column called “Why Steven Y?” From sunny Fort Lauderdale, Alberto Martinez joins our growing list of entertainment reporters. In this issue, Alberto highlights young pop star K-Poff. We can’t make OMG! a success without a great team and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire staff and of course, our readers and partners for making OMG! a huge success. OMG!

GOING OUT:

PALM SPRINGS by Joey Amato

In the midst of the dry, hot California desert, lies an oasis so beautiful that photos cannot capture its splendor. Prior to my visit to Palm Springs, I did not know much about the tiny city and really did not know what to expect during my stay.

White Party

Palm Springs is one of eight desert cities situated in an area known as the Coachella Valley, just a short two-hour drive from Los Angeles or San Diego. The population is approximately 45,000 but doubles during the winter season when all of their fabulous festivals take place. The city averages 350 days of sunshine and less than 5.2 inches of rainfall each year. With winter temperatures averaging in the 70s, it’s an ideal place to escape the harsh northern winters. Upon arrival into Palm Springs, I was greeted by Hillary Angel of the Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau. Hillary was to be my tour guide for the duration of my visit, showing me around the city and helping me discover all the wonders that Palm Springs has to offer. First off, the city is steeped in Native American history. It lies on land settled by the ancestors of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians. Of the reservation's 32,000 acres, 6,700 lie within the Palm Springs city limits. The remaining sections fan out across the desert and mountains in a checkerboard pattern. The Aqua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians remains actively involved with the City of Palm Springs, and in 1995 the tribe opened their first casino in a tent next to the Spa Resort Hotel. Today, the tribe has two hotels, two casinos, a golf resort and entertainment venue. Palm Springs is also host to numerous gay festivals throughout the year, most notably the White Party and Dinah Shore Weekend, one of the top woman’s events in the country, this year headlined by Natasha Bedingfield. Previous White Party performers have included Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Ke$ha. Not too far away from the city lies Indio, home to the annual Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals. While Coachella features a variety of rock, pop and dance acts including Kanye West, Duran Duran and Paul

White Party

Van Dyk, Stagecoach headliners include Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts. Palm Springs is also famous for its mid-century modern architecture. People from around the globe visit the city every year just to view some of the historic properties built during this period. Influences from notable architects Albert Frey and Donald Wexler can be found throughout the city. Also during that period, local developer, Alexander Homes, popularized the post-and-beam architectural style. Alexander houses and similar homes feature low-pitched roofs, wide eaves, open-beamed ceilings, and floor-toceiling windows. Every year, the city hosts Modernism Week to pay tribute to the style. Those who are more interested in shopping can take a stroll along Palm Canyon Drive, the heart of the city. Dozens of boutique shops, art galleries and outdoor cafes line the street, which has become the epicenter of activity. If discount shopping is on your agenda, head to Desert Hills Premium Outlets, just a short 20-minute drive away. Designer stores including Hugo Boss, Barney’s New York and Theory are sure to satisfy even the biggest shopaholic. To catch a birds-eye view of the city, jump aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world’s largest rotating tram car. Rising 8,500 feet from the desert floor, the tram gives visitors a chance to stand atop one of the area’s tallest peaks. Once they’ve reached the summit, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities from cross-country skiing to camping. However, if you visit during the winter months, be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater as the temperature can be 30 degrees colder than the desert below. Nature lovers may also like to journey to one of Palm Springs many wonderful parks and reserves. One location worth a visit is Indian Canyons. This glorious park is home to over 150 species of plants and wildlife, numerous waterfalls and hundreds of miles of hiking trails. On our visit, we had the chance to take part in a guided tour of the park, which is ideal for horseback riding, bird watching and picnicking. WWW.OMGMAG.COM OMG! 25

Where to Stay:

Palm Springs is home to many guest houses and small hotels. I had the pleasure of staying at East Canyon Spa & Resort, a lovely guest house situated in the north end of town. My room featured luxury linens, a large seating area and complimentary wireless Internet service, a must-have in today’s world. Guests looking for a clothing-optional destination can visit Escape Palm Springs, a fairly new boutique property in town. Some rooms at Escape come equipped with a full-kitchen, perfect for those who are looking to spend the majority of their stay on property. Both guest houses offered a unique Palm Springs experience and are worth visiting. With dozens of guest houses to choose from it is hard to find the perfect one, so may I recommend dividing your trip and experiencing two. All of the properties provide a friendly and welcoming environment for their guests. Some are pet-friendly as well, so if you are travelling alone or with others, you will not be disappointed.

Where to Play:

Most gay nightlife is focused around Arena Road in downtown Palm Springs. Destinations include Hunters, SpurLine and Georgie’s Alibi, which is located on Palm Canyon Drive. A tenminute cab ride up the road will lead you to Toucans, the area’s hottest dance club. The indoor/outdoor venue is perfect for those looking to mingle with the desert “it crowd.”

Where to Dine:

Palm Springs is home to many wonderful restaurants, most notably Trio, located in the Uptown Design District. The posh establishment offers a wide range of cuisine from Crawfish Pot Pie to Wild Mushroom Ravioli. I decided to try the Pan-seared Sea Scallops with cantaloupe habanero sauce and roasted butternut squash. The scallops were cooked perfectly and were well complimented by the sweetness of the squash. Another dining jewel is Tropicale, located adjacent to the Spa Resort Casino. The vibrant restaurant and lounge, which opened in 2008, offers a selection of Pacific Rim-inspired small plates, pizzas and entrees. Two standouts include the Kahlúa BBQ Pork Porterhouse Chop with mashed plantains and the Cuban-Style Skirt Steak with spicy corn serrano salsa. Whether you are a nature buff, art lover or design guru, Palm Springs offers something for everyone. The best time to visit is between October and May when temperatures are still tolerable, but steep discounts can be had during the summer months for the budget conscious traveler. INVADES AMERICA… AGAIN! by Joey Amato

30 OMG!

| VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 5 | APRIL 2011

After an overwhelmingly successful but brief North American tour in 2009, international pop sensation Kylie Minogue is getting ready to embark on her second North American tour. Aphrodite – Live 2011 is scheduled to begin April 28 in Montreal and run through May 22 where Kylie will close the tour at the legendary Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, which has played home to legendary divas including Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher. “The reaction to Aphrodite has been absolutely incredible and has inspired me and my creative team to develop a new show that will take all of us on a euphoric journey of joy, excitement and glamour,” Kylie states when asked what fans can expect on the tour. This marks only the second time the Australian songstress will visit North America. Entertainment Weekly called the previous tour a “two-hour post-disco fantasia of strobe, bass, and glitter—an all-out spectacle,” while the New York Times claimed: “the concert was efficient, clobbering, expensive, generous; close to an alternate reality.” With such rave reviews, one can only imagine what Kylie has in store for us this time around. “I can’t wait to get on the road and see all my fans again,” she added. Kylie’s 11th album Aphrodite was released in July of 2010 and debuted at No. 19 in the U.S., marking her highest U.S. chart position since 2002’s Fever. Aphrodite became Kylie’s fifth No. 1 album in the U.K., hitting the top spot a full 22 years to the week since her debut album Kylie entered the chart. The album also made Kylie the first solo artist in the history of the U.K. charts to have a No. 1 album in four different decades. WWW.OMGMAG.COM OMG! 31

feature “I think the euphoria came when we brought Stuart Price on board as executive producer,” Kylie states. “He’s so delightful and I was so relaxed recording with him because we got on like a house on fire. We just did it on the studio mic. I wasn’t separated in another room. I felt confident with him. He allowed me to shine.” Just last month, she made history by scoring a U.S. Billboard chart first, by holding down the Nos. 1 and 3 slots on the Dance/ Club Play Songs survey, becoming the first act to claim two of the top three ranks concurrently in the tally's nearly 35-year history. "Better Than Today," her current single came in at No. 1 while Taio Cruz's "Higher", featuring Kylie landed at No.3. "Better Than Today" is Minogue's sixth Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1, and the third straight topper from "Aphrodite." "I absolutely love knowing that there's such huge support for my songs in the U.S. club scene," Minogue said in a statement to Billboard. "To hit the No. 1 spot three times in a row is amazing and to break a Club chart record with two tracks in the top three is wonderful." However, success did not come easy. The singer has held an intense promotional schedule since the release of the album, including making guest appearances on “America’s Got Talent,” “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” and “Dancing With The Stars,” in addition to “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” With anticipation of her upcoming tour building, Kylie has undoubtedly recaptured the title as one of pop’s leading ladies. Her career began in 1987, when she released her first single, “Locomotion”. The song rocketed to No. 1 in Australia and remained in the top spot for seven weeks, becoming the country’s biggest single of the 1980s. Since then she has released ten studio albums, two live CDs, and eight live concert DVD’s, in addition to almost 50 singles. Kylie has been the guest of royalty in Britain and Europe, received countless gold and platinum records, been honored with numerous prestigious awards, sold-out six record breaking world tours and closed the Sydney Olympics in 2000. She’s even graced the covers of Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour, GQ, Harpers Bazaar and Rolling Stone and once again strives to achieve the same success in the United States that she saw with the release of Fever. When Kylie released her global smash hit “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” and Fever in September 2001, she exploded onto

the U.S. charts. The album generated three other smash hits including “In Your Eyes” and “Love At First Sight,” went on to sell over six million copies worldwide, and earned a Grammy Award for “Come Into My World.” Kylie spent the summer of 2003 recording her ninth studio album, Body Language, which she released that November. It was preceded by the hypnotic single “Slow,” co-written by Kylie herself, and although the album achieved mediocre success in the U.S., it sold very well elsewhere in the world. And then in 2005, in the midst of her Showgirl tour Kylie was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. After receiving subsequent medical opinions, it was found Kylie had an aggressive type of breast cancer and immediately underwent surgery and chemotherapy. Kylie spent the following year focusing on her treatment and recovery from cancer, and in June 2006, the British editions of both GQ and Glamour magazines voted Kylie ‘Woman of The Year.’ On November 11, 2006 Kylie made a triumphant and emotional return to the stage to continue the Showgirl tour that was aptly retitled, Showgirl Homecoming. To top off an incredibly successful year, Kylie not only appeared on the cover of Australian Vogue but also took on the role of guest editor for the issue. She simultaneously appeared around the world on the cover of Elle Magazine in a beautiful photo-shoot shot by the legendary Karl Lagerfeld. Then in late 2009, Kylie realized one of her most cherished ambitions by doing a one-off exclusive tour of the U.S. and Canada. The sold-out, critically acclaimed tour included visits to San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Toronto and offered fans an up close and personal opportunity to experience her live show. The summer of 2010 ushered in a new and exciting era in Kylie’s incredible story, the era of the Aphrodite. Kylie’s 11th studio album has been generating huge levels of excitement among critics and fans alike. Kylie kicks the album into high gear with the chart-topping “All the Lovers,” a song that immediately catapults her to the success achieved on Fever, which she attained nearly a decade ago. The accompanying video to the track is a tribute to her gay fans and is arguably more provocative than any other video she has made. One British commentator went as far as calling the video, “her raunchiest video yet.” “I was not expecting to be wearing that kind of outfit ever again,” she laughs, referring to the video. “In fact, the brief for the video had me wearing long, flowing dresses. When I got to the shoot, the director said: ‘I think of you and I think hot pants.’ I had to wrestle with my feelings about it, but I survived.”

feature

The following tracks on Aphrodite keep fans on the dance floor. “Get Outta My Way,” the releases second single is reminiscent of Kylie’s earlier hits but incorporates modern sounds and production, while she channels Donna Summer for the airy “Closer,” which is reminiscent of Summer’s smash hit, “I Feel Love.” The tempo remains in overdrive on the title track “Aphrodite,” an introspective song about her struggle with cancer and her endless power and triumph over the disease. “Better Than Today,” her current hit single, catches listeners from the start of the first few notes. By the time the bridge comes, you are enamored by the track. Kylie reigns supreme in the chorus: “What’s the point in livin’ if you don’t take a chance…what’s the point in livin’ if you don’t wanna dance?” The edgiest song on the album is definitely “Cupid Boy.” Kylie digs deep on this passionate track. “Why don’t you thrill me like you did before…why don’t you give me a little bit more?” The song is not as techno-pop sounding as the rest of the album and has the potential to break through to mainstream U.S. audiences. “Can’t Beat the Feeling,” keeps the party going and is the perfect closing track to Kylie’s best album since Fever. Let’s hope Kylie can recreate all of the passion and intensity Aphrodite has to offer when she appears live in concert. For a complete list of upcoming tour dates, visit Kylie.com. OMG!

CAZWELL It’s a Monday afternoon in New York City, and Cazwell’s charming voice manages to cut through the honking horns, sirens and screaming pedestrians, dodging taxis as we talk. By now he’s a pro at it, and after 11 years of calling the urban jungle his home, he still cites it as one of his greatest inspirations. “I am surrounded by an eclectic group of people and weird personalities,” Cazwell says. “It truly is a community of artists. People really try to help you here. I couldn’t have made it this far at all if I wasn’t in New York.” He’s in a good mood. In fact, he even says he’s feeling a bit cocky and doesn’t feel the need to apologize for that. “I don’t think I am any more cocky or entitled than any typical straight asshole either,” says Cazwell. In all fairness, he has been working hard on making a name for himself. Since he had his first taste of success in 2006 with the song “All Over Your Face,” which was banned on LOGO for its explicit lyrics and uber-sexy video, Cazwell has become a sought after performer and host at some of the biggest clubs across the country. Last summer his song and video “Ice Cream Truck,” was a viral hit, receiving over a million hits in just a week. Not bad for a guy who says he grew up in the “arm-pit stain of New England.” Born Luke Caswell in Worcester, Mass. the 33-year-old, openly gay rapper was the middle child in a conservative household. His parents taught sex-ed at church and divorced when he was 16. Last fall his father remarried for the fifth time. Although he remains close to both his parents and his younger brother, he hasn’t spoken to his older brother in close to 15 years. According to Cazwell, he suffers from clinical depression and won’t even acknowledge they are siblings. However, he doesn’t hold any hostility for him and says he’d be open for a relationship if his brother ever initiated the lines of communication again. At 18, the day Cazwell graduated from high school, he came out. At the time he didn’t have a direction for his future. A career in music wasn’t something he even dreamed about. He admits that he only started rapping because he realized he couldn’t act or sing. For a moment he did consider an academic lifestyle, even though he says he was so average in school that even the state college down the street wouldn’t accept him. Eventually he did enroll at UMASS Boston and studied sociology, but dropped out; something he says was his advisor’s idea. After explaining the rush he felt when he was on stage to her, she told him that school wasn’t for him, and he should follow his passion. After playing small gigs where he was begging and even paying for people to show up to support him, he began collaborating with transgender icon Amanda Lepore and performed as one of Lady Gaga’s original opening acts. He then appeared on the remix for her hit “Just Dance.” Cazwell remains appreciative for Gaga’s support

and admires her strong work ethic, but doesn’t pretend to be besties. When it comes to discussing her new song, “Born This Way,” which received criticism for sounding too much like Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” Cazwell defends Gaga. “I think it sounds more like ‘Like a Prayer,’ but big deal? You can go through any pop song and cross reference something,” Cazwell says. “Who cares?” Cazwell also isn’t shy about defending his artistry. Questioning if he really believes he has talent or just received a lucky break, he says, “What break are you talking about? Yes, of course I would go as far as to say I am talented. To me a break is when you meet someone who is in the industry who can do about 25 favors for you and get you there.” In addition to believing in himself, living by the mantra “I’m as good as I allow myself to be,” Cazwell also feels he’s a role model for others, despite the fact his music is soaked in graphic lyrics and sexual imagery. From the beginning of his career he’s embraced his sexuality and never hid for the fear his music wouldn’t be accepted. However, he never used it as a means to get noticed either. There was a time when those who remained in the closet infuriated him, but his feelings have mellowed and he can now see both sides. Still, it’s something he believes hurts the community and the movement. “I was talking with a friend of mine who is black,” he says,

40 OMG!

| VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 5 | APRIL 2011

“and he understood why it offends me. He said he would feel the same way if Lena Horne had denied that she was black.” But don’t look for Cazwell to get into political debates. He’s not even following the news or keeping up on what’s happening with LGBT rights, saying, “I’m just trying to focus on making my outfits for my shows.” He’s also concentrating on his personal life with his longterm boyfriend, who according to him fits all his criteria for what he searches for in a man: a slut with brown eyes. It’s the happiness he’s searched for after overcoming his demons; the toughest being his love affair with drugs and alcohol. Although he won’t go as far to say he was an addict, he does acknowledge that he partied hard and did more than just dabble in drugs. Looking ahead, Cazwell would love to have a condo in New York, a house in Hawaii and a place in Miami. He understands, though, in order to achieve that, he has to move beyond successful YouTube videos, and after dancing around a clever answer finally confesses that he longs for a mainstream hit. “I would love it,” he says. “I would play more gigs, make more money and make more people happy. Then to be seen as a profitable, out, gay person means a lot to me too.” OMG!

WHEN IN MILAN, DO IT LIKE THE MILANESE DO! by Leo Juvier

With over two million inhabitants, Milan is Italy’s most dynamic city, as well as, the fashion and financial capital of the country. In contrast to other Italian cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice, I was surprised to find more banks and commercial establishments than century-old buildings and cathedrals, making its modern metropolitan feel very appealing to me. Milan attracts fashionistas from every latitude, making it one of the top and most popular fashion capitals of the world, along with Paris, New York and Tokyo. The gay traveler will feel very comfortable to know that this city is very welcoming and liberal, placing it at the forefront of the gay rights movement in Italy. During my traveling here, I was very fortunate to reunite with one of my best friends who is “in” with the gay scene, “Rukutu - A Vulcanica do Bembe,” as he is known there. We hit every club in the city: from “G-Lounge” on friday night,“Il Barbarella” on Saturday night, to “Il borgo del Tempo Perso,” on Sunday night, a must do while in Milan. The clubs open around 11:30 p.m. but peak hour is around 2:00 a.m. Make sure you get a good rest before hitting the clubs, after you go for happy hour or “fare l’apperitivo" at one of Milan’s numerous vinotecas or Enoteca. With its chic atmosphere, as well as, its convenient location in Piazza XXIV Maggio, “Le Wine” became my favorite vinoteca in all of “La Zona Naviglio.” “Le Wine,” offers a very friendly atmosphere to rendez-vouz and wine tasting. They also host an array of events ranging from artist viewings, live music, to open mic nights, making this place the ideal place to meet a neo-bohemian poet in Milan. So whether, you decide to go for a nice Italian meal with your new Italian “friend” or just go on an afternoon stroll through La Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle checking out the latest fashion, you will realize why this city has gained its reputation. In Milan, people live for fashion, art and culture. Also, don’t forget to tour Milan’s architectural jewel, Il Duomo, which is the fourth largest cathedral in the world, Visit la Zona Naviglio for the chic and fashionable happy hours and try to score tickets to the grand opera house of La Scala. Cookies are the original antidepressant. Everyone has fond memories of Grandma's recipe cards, flour-dusted and covered with buttery fingerprints, and of glaring into the oven, waiting for that timer to ding. Cookies are a staple during holidays and special occasions; your after-school snack; something to do on a rainy day; the thing that makes lunch complete. They represent tradition. These chewy, moist, crisp, and even gooey creations can spark a sense of nostalgia and conjure up a general sense of warmth, calm and comfort. Be it an old standby - Oatmeal, Peanut Butter, Sugar, Gingerbread or Chocolate Chip - or a fun, new trend, like a macaroon, there is something truly special about the power of a cookie. Here are two easy recipes that do not need to be reserved for a special occasion. Enjoy!

Lemon Rosemary Cookie:

Cha Chah Choco Chocolate Cookie:

1 Cup Butter, Room Temperature 1 ½ Cups Sugar 1 Egg 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda ½ Teaspoon Baking Powder 2 ¾ Cups Flour Lemon Zest Chopped Rosemary

1 Cup Butter 1 ½ Cup Sugar 2 Eggs 2 Teaspoons Vanilla 2 Cups Flour 2/3 Cups Cocoa Powder ¾ Teaspoon Baking Soda ¼ Teaspoon Salt 2 Cups of Chocolate Chips

Directions for Both Recipes In a mixing bowl, use a standard creaming technique and whip together butter and sugar. Once "creamed," continue by adding the egg and vanilla extract. Combine all dry ingredients in a dry bowl and gradually add into the butter/egg mixture. After the wet and dry ingredients are combined, add lemon zest and rosemary to your liking. Once fully incorporated, wrap the dough in plastic and chill for 30 minutes. To bake: On a sheet pan, make teaspoon-sized balls and spread them out evenly with room to expand during the baking process. Bake at 350 degrees for about 11-15 minutes. Allow to cool before serving. DINING OUT: New York City by Arnold Myint New York City is a food lover's paradise. It's almost unthinkable that the concrete jungle called Manhattan can offer such a variety of culinary delights. There are more eateries on one block than all of the members of the Restaurant Association in my hometown of Nashville, and for the most part, they are all tasty and satisfying. From Chinatown dumplings to Philippe Chow's $60 delivery menu, a falafel at Mamouns to cupcakes and pizza or a classic chef-driven evening at places like Casa Mono, Le Cirque and Jeans Georges, visitors are guaranteed to have their senses treated and their bellies filled. I've just returned from Manhattan, where I celebrated my friend Steven's 40th birthday. My last trip there was a few months ago for work, and I found myself scrambling to fit in all my favorite 'go to' spots. Experiencing the hustle of the city many years ago while watching my Broadway dreams fade and realizing my culinary destiny, I lived in three different apartments located in the Lower East Side, Chelsea, and Hell's Kitchen. As a transient New Yorker, I quickly became attached to my favorite dining spots, so even when I was no longer in the 'hood, I would travel through hell and high water when a craving arose. I revisited some of these places, happy to find that after a decade, they are still bustling with business, and I discovered some new gems that I hope will last another decade. Here are a few of the highlights of my weekend that contributed to a monumental birthday experience for one of my dearest friends.

The Meatball Shop:

Kuma Inn:

Txikito:

I have a crush. His name is The Meatball Shop (btw, one of the owners is HOT!!!!). This 39 seat eatery salutes a beloved comfort food by featuring five types of meatballs, a selection of sauces and sides, homemade ice cream sandwiches, and a carefully edited wine list and beers.

I text Steven the address and told him that this place is BYOB and cash only. His response is “cash only? Byob? Ghetto.” Then I check out his Facebook status: “Pre-birthday dinner. My friends sure know how to pick out the most fancy places in NYC.” WTF?! LOL, LMAO, OMG.

I fell in love with this place last fall. This time, upon entering and ordering a Gin with sparkling Spanish lemon soda (the Ginkas), the bartender quickly noted that I looked familiar. And after an exciting reunion with my server, Amy, from my last visit, he laughed as he realized that he's seen my headshot (that I jokingly gave her after a few bottles of wine) on her refrigerator…love it!

84 Stanton Street Themeatballshop.com

Our server encouraged us to 'mix-andmatch' and build our personalized meal of golf ball-sized meatballs that come Naked, a choice of any four meatballs served with Focaccia and sauce; as a singular Slider, one ball on a bun with sauce; as a Hero, three meatballs on an Il Forno baguette with sauce and choice of provolone or mozzarella cheese; or Smash, three meatballs “smashed” with sauce on a brioche bun. With so many options and anxious to try everything, we ordered the daily special Chorizo Meatball along with the Classic Beef, made with all-natural Creekstone Farms beef, La Quercia prosciutto, fresh ricotta and herbs; Spicy Pork, made with Heritage Farms pigs and pickled peppers; a fennel seeded and black peppercornstudded savory Chicken ball; and a hearty Vegetable option with lentils, walnuts and mushrooms. We also paired the balls with sauces we thought would be best suited. In addition to the meatballs, we ordered some sides which included a delicious assortment of Rigatoni with Red Sauce, Polenta Gratin and Braised Collard Greens. If that wasn’t enough, scooped-toorder Ice Cream Sandwiches with freshly baked cookies, including Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Brownie, Walnut Meringue and Ginger Snap, and homemade ice cream flavors like chocolate, vanilla, espresso, mint and caramel sparked a childlike creative energy amongst me and my friends.

An unexpected grungy red door with spray painted, stenciled letters is easy to over look. But for those lucky enough to experience what awaits them in this Lower East Side secondfloor walk up, cliché watered-down Pan Asian strip mall eateries will forever be erased from the mind. When I was in culinary school, I had a pastry chef suggest I check out what Thai-Filipino Chef King Phojanakong was cooking up. After that initial visit, I submitted a Calamansi Curd to my instructor. She looked up and said, “You went!” I did indeed, and I loved it. This celebratory visit was an easy pick. I knew that there would be no fuss, and it would be intimate, and most of importantly, delicious. Our first bite into the steamed pillow of BBQ Pork Bao Bun prompted a simultaneous sigh of contentment. And from that point onward, the night consistently progressed. Smiles stretched from ear to ear as we ate Chef King's tapas style items of Lumpiang Shanghai, crispy pork spring rolls; Shrimp Dumplings; Pancit Bihon, stir fried noodles with pork, sausage, beansprouts and carrots; Marinated Octopus Salad; Tita Em's Abodong PAL, chicken wings, rice vinegar, garlic and soy; and the highlight of the evening, which we ended up ordering again, Sauteed Chinese Sausage with traditional Thai steamed sticky rice and a gorgeous sauce of lime juice, chilies and fish sauce. With no room for dessert, we decided that no night cap was needed and retreated back to our rooms for a good night's slumber.

Txikito, pronounced chee-kee-toe, is a love letter to a region whose cuisine is distinguished by simplicity and excellence. Humble ingredients like beans and peppers share the same value at the table as farmhouse cheeses and unique breeds of cattle. This restaurant truly captures the food expression throughout the Basque country, from simple bar foods to its more sophisticated signature dishes. At first glance, the menu can seem a little overwhelming. Don’t let the language intimidate you. This restaurant is well worth a bite of intellectual humble pie and with no pretense, the staff will gladly guide you through a culinary journey. While sipping on a bottle of 2009 Ameztoi Geariako Txakolina, Hondarribi Zuri, Beltza, we dined tapas-style on selections of Piperrak, blistered Gernika peppers with seal salt; Kroketas, crispy creamy salt cod cakes; Patatak Mentaiko, crisp fries with spicy cod roe mayo; Txangurro, crabmeat gratin; Albondigas, lamb meatballs in minted broth; Morros Prensados, seared veal jowel terrine, sweet onion vinaigrette; and Cochinillo, slow cooked suckling pig with chimichurri sauce. To my delight, Amy recalled my last visit and how much I enjoyed a special that was listed on their daily board. Sure enough, the kitchen sent it out to our table. Setas, king oyster mushroom carpaccio with tomato, crushed marcona almonds and roncal cheese, was the ultimate highlight of the evening. We ordered two! OMG!

K-POFF: “HI-TECH” EP REVIEW

)

available on itunes

By Alber to Mar tinez As technologies progress us further into the future, it seems to me that it’s not only our gadgets that have been getting a second look. Music has quickly been evolving these past couple of years, and it appears to be time for Electronica and Dance to take over mainstream. Nearly every genre has slowly shown more and more of a turn into the electronic department. It’s evident that everyone has seen the change and attempted to adopt the style to make it their own, but it hasn’t been easy. The quick advance has made it increasingly difficult for some to keep true to themselves while still keeping current, leaving many artists at a bit of a struggle. Even our own princess of pop, Britney Spears, hasn’t hesitated to add some Electronic/Dubstep elements to her upcoming album. David Guetta, Tiesto, and many other producers have seamlessly grabbed the attention of the world this last year and brought Electronic music to a new light. Now adding his own flavor to music and quickly catching the attention of many is up-and-coming singer/songwriter K-POFF. This new artist has quickly been rising in popularity for his rather addicting style and twist to dance music. His first EP “Hi-Tech”, now available on iTunes and Masterbeat.com, is sure to grab your attention as it is almost impossible not to be captivated by him. Even more surprising, "Hi-Tech" is the first song K-POFF ever wrote. In a time where so many artists are struggling to be heard, K-POFF is having no problem grabbing people’s attention and making them listen. Not only does he write his own material but he also sounds impeccable live. “Hi-Tech” has officially been signed by music pioneer, Seth Cooper of Greenlink Music. Greenlink Music was designed to help foster the creation of unique productions. The label promotes new and upcoming talent towards multiple music communities, such as: House, Progressive, Club, Tribal, and Circuit. Since the labels debut, it’s already had two hits on Masterbeat. com’s Top 100 Overall charts, including: Bryan Reyes – “Get Wet” and Seth Cooper and Trypsin – “Feel The Rhythm.” Greenlink Music provides an avenue for artists like K-POFF to be heard. "The moment Trypsin played “Hi-Tech” for me, I was hooked, and I knew others would be too. This single had to be given the chance for a proper release,” states Cooper. “The vocal talent from K-POFF was clearly apparent, as well as his unique spin on Electronic/Pop music. Everyone involved on this project has put in a lot of hard work, and Greenlink Music is proud to have a chance to share this amazing track with the world." His boyish good looks, killer body, and amazing music makes K-POFF an all around star. “I’ve always wanted to be a singer,”

states the young musician. “Since I was little I would belt out at the top of my lungs and sing along to all my favorite artists and influences.” A multi-talented artist, K-POFF has decided to focus on his recording career. “From the get-go, I’ve known this is what I want to do with my life. Music will always be my number one passion. When I sing, nothing else seems to matter and all my problems go away. I was told the music industry would never support me because I’m openly gay, but I believe that no one should be held back because of who they love, and I’m here to prove that.” K-POFF’s “Hi-Tech” EP showcases his single along with a few remixes by Trypsin, Bryan Reyes, The Popstar and Seth Cooper himself. All of the tracks bring something new to the single and add a different style to the song altogether. The EP is genius because it caters to multiple genres, so there is something for everyone. Every remix brings something new to the table and completely transforms the original track into a brand new song. This EP is a must have for 2011 and keeps me eagerly awaiting K-POFF’s first album. Those who have seen him live have compared him to Blake Lewis meets Gaga infused with David Guetta, a mixture that is definitely worth taking a listen to. K-POFF combines Pop and Dance together to provide listeners with unimaginable beats and catchy lyrics. His music will be sure to have you blasting the tracks on repeat sooner than you can process what you even heard. “Hi-Tech” is now available on iTunes and Masterbeat.com. NOBODY LISTENS TO TECHNO! By DJ Joanie

As dance music has invaded mainstream charts in the last year, I’ve been patiently waiting to spring my revenge. I can now confidently proclaim: “Yes! EVERYONE Listens To Techno!” It’s only a matter of time before old Slim Shady gets a remix from the likes of David Guetta or Moby himself!

Usher teamed up with Swedish House Mafia for an AMA performance, The Black Eyed Peas annihilated the techno/ hip-hop barrier with party hit after party hit, and Afrojack and Deadmau5 became household names. With all these great blood-pumping hybrids I feel like I’ve been transported back into the “Insomnia” days of the mid-to-late ‘90’s! Of particular note this month is a cluster or stellar releases that have me awed in amazement. Check ‘em out after the MyFlexRadio.com commercial break…. For 2011 we’re launching a line-up of World Class DJ’s to take to the Flex decks. We’d like to proudly welcome the amazing multitalented Tracy Young, Grammy nominated remixer/producer NYC’s Mike Rizzo and Miami’s tastemaker George Figares to the MyFlexRadio.com on-air line-up. Be on the lookout for their mixshows! Now, on to the music!

San Francisco Is My Disco by Laura LaRue With a cheery “Bonjour Kittens!” Laura LaRue has arrived! Off her new album “Beatifique” this Chus & Abel remix’s cheeky vibe has us dancing and prancing at the station. Added straight outta the box this reminds me of an homage to “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer. Laura, a SF native touts her influences as Blondie, The Beatles and Burt Bacharach but reminds me of a French Yoko Ono. She’s, cool, she’s hip and a party girl that is an avid MyFlexRadio.com listener! It’s certainly a mash-up of disco influences with a fun frivolous vocal about life in the city with the bridge. When the big-room build-up hits hard it’s impossible not to dance. Tres Magnifique!

Sweat by Snoop Dogg & David Guetta Just typing the title cracks me up. The combination of seeing the two names together makes my dance sensibilities lurch but take it from me it is an amazing combination that fits like a glove. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! It samples the old rave classic “Don’t You Want Me” by Felix from the early ‘90’s. Snoop’s vocoder vocal is sultry and tweeks the right neurons. Guetta goes harder and does a Benny Benassi bassline and wacky instrumental stabs that will have you double-checking the title. Yeah right, Snoop does Satisfaction! The skinny on the lyrics is typical Snoop fare about high-roller nights, getting wet and slip & sliding but just giggle with me when this pops up everywhere.

What A Feeling by Alex Gaudino & Kelly Rowland My fave Destiny’s Child alum is back with another anthem. This time without David Guetta which means he was working elsewhere (see above!). She hooks up with Italy’s Mr. Gaudino who brought us the massive Destination Calabria which mashed Crystal Waters with the biggest melody of 2007. What A Feeling isn’t the title track from that old movie Flashdance. It’s an original with a strong piano melody and uplifting top of the world lyrics about the joys of new-found love. Get it girl! Absolutely amazing stuff!

“Nobody Listens To Techno!” Ever since Eminem screamed that line in “Without Me” back in 2002 it has become a mantra for every hip-hop aficionado. His disdain for Moby calling him homophobic actually shaped a generation’s musical perceptions. It seems like the general population believes that if music’s fast and danceable….it’s techno. I can’t count the number of times a club patron (usually a straight woman in a tiny black dress) has said “Are you gonna play TECHNO all night?” “Play some HIPHOP!” Truth be told, I’m usually playing anything up-tempo…. house, circuit, electro, but to them anything faster than Top 40 radio crunk is alien territory.

IN THE WORLD OF TRAVEL: MEET JOHN TANZELLA By Michael Goodman Whoever said you can’t judge a book by its cover has not met John Tanzella. The President/CEO of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), Tanzella is cool, calm and collected as he oversees this global not-forprofit organization founded in 1983 with more than 2,000 members in 88 countries. From his early years growing up in Boston and then Atlanta, Tanzella was like a sponge absorbing his parents love for the travel industry. Both his father and mother worked for the airlines so this youngest of three brothers was destined to make travel a significant part of his life. And travel he does about twice a month visiting destinations around the world. Graduating with an advertising degree from the University of Georgia, Tanzella was off to a life of adventure. He took on a marketing and sales role with Delta Airlines and then lived in Florence, Italy for a few years to market to U.S students about learning abroad. That was until he was recruited by the Washington, D.C. Convention and Visitors Bureau to support their corporate sales goals. It was there that he was exposed to IGLTA and saw the potential to market exclusively to the gay traveler. The rest is history as this charming, modest gentleman has been at the helm of IGLTA since 2005. And now as he and his team of eight prepare for the IGLTA Annual Global Convention in Fort Lauderdale, which takes place May 1015, he is poised to take this organization to the next level of success. “John has brought so much to IGLTA –we have evolved from a good business model to a strong business organization with an international presence,” said Tanya Churchmuch, Board Chair of IGLTA, publisher of girlport.com and Manager of International Relations and Gay and Lesbian Market for Tourism Montreal. While most businesses and organizations were experiencing a decline in sales due to a fickle economy, he recognized the value in more niche marketing—and what better market than the LGBT community. During the past year, the LGBT market represented $75 billion in travel expenditures in the United States alone.

“We seized the moment and now have extended our tentacles out there to really impact the gay travel market in a sound and meaningful way on behalf of our growing membership,” Tanzella said. International gay travel is booming and so with offices in Paris, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, IGLTA is on a roll to fulfill its primary mission to connect businesses in the LGBT tourism industry. Over the last five years, membership has grown from 800 to over 2,300 businesses and there are now ambassadors situated in 20 countries. John adds, “It’s working well, and we are making great strides to ensure that the gay traveler is accepted, welcomed and treated with respect. More and more people get that, and we are here to help them promote and profit from this.” The success continues as IGLTA has recently been accepted as part of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, which validates gay tourism on a whole new level. So what’s next for John and his team? The May 2011 Convention is a great indicator of what’s in store with speakers from Google, Topguest, Gay Cities, TripAdvisor and more. The emphasis is on education, social media and the actual gay traveler who is in the driver’s seat deciding where they want to go, how they want to get there and what they want to do. Fiscally in good shape with a vision for the future, IGLTA is embarking on yet another milestone in its history, which will establish a new foundation to further impact gay tourism. With a huge grin, John adds, “I am really proud of where we are and am up for the challenge as we evolve to better serve our members and further embrace the gay traveler.” OMG! Joe Granda: The Spice of Pride By Giancarlo Cicerelli Throughout history we have seen the genre of music shift, change and evolve to include a plethora of unique artists and acts; however, most artists are relegated to one specific market or sound. In terms of Latin artists, that all changed the day South Florida local and Granda Entertainment founder and CEO, Joe Granda, began his career in the entertainment business more than 40 years ago. Since then, he has been at the forefront of successfully merging the Latino and mainstream markets within the entertainment industry, providing both markets with some of the biggest names in the world of crossover artists, including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Gloria Trevi, Nelly Furtado, among many others. One of the most unique ways Joe has been able to build such a strong mainstream following is by working closely with and supporting the LGBT community. As we all know, the LGBT community tends to be at the forefront of most fashion, design, arts and cultural, and, of course, music movements. In fact, a number of Joe’s promotional tours have and continue to focus on LGBT venues and events. As a huge supporter of the gay community, Joe has dedicated a countless amount of hours to local and national organizations, including a number of Gay Pride events all over the country, including Miami Beach Pride, Los Angeles Pride, Long Beach Pride, San Francisco Pride, San Jose Pride, San Diego Pride, and Queens Pride. “In the majority we produce the Latin Stage and area, managing the staging, sound, lights, DJs, promotion and publicity, and finding and booking the right talent, especially those that support the LGBT community and not just do it for the money,” explains Joe. “It is important for us to look for artists that will attract major media, because that is how we can change the negative stigma of the LGBT community throughout the Latin American community. To do this, we put together a great team and co-produce most of the stages with Club Papi Productions.” Joe began his career in the entertainment industry as a child actor for WLTV (now Univision) in a children’s variety program, “Cabalgata Infantil.” While working as a child star and musician, Joe quickly learned the importance

of branding an artist, a strong marketing team, and, of course, event and concert production. Joe moved from the stage to behind the scenes, working closely with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry to put his respective artists at the top of the charts under the auspices of his new Indie record label, Angel Eyes Music, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year! While working with these artists on promotion, marketing, and concert and event production, Joe developed a successful formula that included tying new crossover artists with the LGBT community in order to increase mainstream awareness as a whole for these artists. Joe was so successful in merging the Latino and mainstream markets, Billboard Magazine created a new category of music, referred to as “Crossover”. Oscar Llord formerly of the Sony Discos Label immediately recognized the importance of this crossover formula and implemented Joe’s marketing strategy to help artists we all know and love, including our favorite out crossover artist, Ricky Martin! This year, Joe is very much involved in planning the entertainment for the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride, scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 16th. “I was brought in by Score owners Luis Morera and Billy Kemp, whom I have done many events with three years ago to be on the entertainment committee,” says Joe. “Since then, I have been part of the committee working closely with Miami Beach Gay Pride director of operations, Cindy Brown, and the entertainment committee VP, Karen Brown to spice up the Latin acts for Miami Bach Gay Pride. “A lot of very talented artists come to Miami every year to pursue their dreams of stardom, and this year Miami Beach Gay Pride has decided to give them the opportunity to do just that by performing at the 3rd Annual Pride. We are finalizing all the details for the Palace Latin stage now, and it looks very likely that the incredible La India will headline that stage, along with Elvis Crespo.” We can’t wait to see what Joe has in store for the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride, and look forward to seeing it all take place on Pride’s Latin Stage, which will be hosted by The Palace on 12th and Ocean Drive! 80 OMG!

| VOLUME 3 | ISSUE 5 | APRIL 2011

By Wm. Cor y Jeffries, LMT In the summer of 2003, I realized that I would be turning 40 soon! Understanding that this was a big birthday, I began to reflect on what I had accomplished up to that point in my life. Focusing my attention on Inner Growth, I decided to take up running. Because I am the type of person who doesn’t like doing things half-way, setting a goal would answer any lingering doubts about myself. I would do more than just start running. I’d take on a major challenge; I’d train to run the Walt Disney World Marathon. The first time I went for a run, I could barely breathe. I’d never ran track, or cross country in school, and being a big beefy strapping dude, the last active thing I did was Navy boot camp in 1983. At that time my training grounds were in Ormond Beach, FL. I was trying to “run” the one-mile bridge over the Halifax River and on the first day, I almost didn’t make it to the top for fear of a stroke.

But I wanted desperately to do this, to do something extraordinary. So I just kept trying a little more each day. More distance, more speed, little by little and by the end of the first week, I conquered that bridge, and set a new goal. I started to see hopeful signs and began to think: “I can do this!” After months of pounding the pavement daily, in the sunny humid weather that wraps Florida like a second skin, summer faded into autumn, soon the day of infamy was upon me. Sunday January 4, 2004 at 6 a.m., I took my first step past the starting line and 4 ½ hours later, I was crossing the finish line…I completed the marathon. Seven years later I’ve run more the seven full marathons, and too many smaller ones to count. The act of training for and running road races has taught me so much about what it takes to set a goal, maintain focus and follow through. These lessons have helped me on countless other occasions in my life too. In my life and career as a Licensed Massage Therapist, I work to heal, make my clients feel better, and help them, like myself, address their struggles with motivation. Guess what, when I share my story about training for that 1st marathon it serves as a great teacher. You don’t have to run one to know what resistance feels like. No matter what your particular finish line may be, the lessons ring true. I suggest the following strategies to help you meet your own goals in stride.

STRETCH ____________________________________

Sure, we could all use a little more flexibility in our bodies. But what’s more interesting to me is the idea of stretching one’s limits. Had I not registered for that first race, I might never have realized the extent of my capabilities. Training to run 26.2 miles non-stop taught me a lot about myself. To finish that race, I had to dig deep and muster up the inner reserves of endurance and determination I didn’t even know I had. As a result of this, my entire sense of self expanded. Get outside of our comfort zone occasionally and see how far you can really go.

GET HELP ___________________________________

Seek support from friends and love ones. Don’t get so wrapped up in the fear of failure, that you miss out on the love and support of those who care about you most. My advice, you may think that you can handle things on your own, but you don’t have to, plus this might make things harder than necessary. Ask people to support you in meeting your goals. A good partner will hold you accountable, lend an ear, and share a fresh perspective, just when you need it the most.

SHOW UP ____________________________________

Here’s the thing, most of the time I don’t even feel like running. It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just that sometimes my mood gets in the way. Just as I’m ready to hit the pavement, a hundred other reasons spring to mind about why I shouldn’t go. Similarly, I never feel a 100% prepared on a race day, right up until the start. I keep hoping they’ll cancel the race so we can go get Starbucks. Over the course of time, I’ve trained myself not to be swayed by my mood. Now I tell myself, ‘just get to the starting line, you can’t complete the race if you don’t make it to the starting line.’

RUN YOUR OWN RACE ________________________

Ask any runner about how to train for a race and they’ll definitely have an opinion: ‘should I carbo-load the night before; should I start out fast right out of the gate or should I pace myself?’ No doubt, you will find no shortage of ideas about prepping for your run, some good, some bad, but the bottom line is that this is your race – do what’s best for you! On race day, I get quiet and focus my energy on the task at hand. Out on the course, I tune in to what my body is telling me. If I’m thirsty, I hydrate. If I’m hungry I eat. But it’s on my terms. My body and I are partners in the race; we look out for each other. While you can listen to the advice of others, you don’t have to take it. Ultimately, only you can know how you will run a race. I find it to be the same in life. My credo is to learn to listen and hear what life is telling you, and trust your own intuition. After all, nobody knows you better than you do yourself. OMG!

WHY

STEVEN Dear Steven:

Dear Steven:

“My extremely jealous boyfriend reads my text messages and emails. We have been together for over a year, and I love him a lot. Recently, he has gone so far as to install a key logger on my laptop. I don’t understand why he does this. If he doesn’t stop I am going to break up with him. Help!” -- Tim

“My boyfriend and I have been together for a little over a year. In the beginning we would have sex often; sometimes twice a day. Now we are lucky to have it once a month! We fight all the time, and now it seems that the only time we are intimate is when we are drunk. Help!” -- Kevin

.................................................................................

.................................................................................

When we enter a relationship we bring along the previous experiences albeit good and bad. It sounds as though your boyfriend has an issue with trust. He may have had a previous relationship that validated his fears, or he is extremely unsure of himself. Either way he is projecting onto you, and it will not accomplish what he is trying to say. There is only so much you can do for this. Some people need reassuring differently from others. While some may thrive on hugs and kisses; others may need little notes or text messages to feel loved. Explain to him that when he does this; it accomplishes the opposite. It makes you angry that he doesn’t trust you. Assure him that you love him and would never intentionally hurt him. Ask him to talk about his previous relationships. Although it may be hard to hear the details; the idea is to open communication. Frequently, behavior like this stems from poor communication. Talking to each other will allow you to express feelings and fears. If you are unable to talk or feel you won’t be heard, write each other a letter and then talk about the letter. Either way you need to have a conversation with him. Work toward a goal with him. And remember; Madonna didn’t become a star overnight. OMG!

Sexual intimacy is important to any long term relationship; but it is not everything. Regardless of what anyone will tell you, looks may draw us in; but it’s not what makes us stay. A relationship initially based on sex is not healthy for either of you. As a relationship grows; roles become more defined. Responsibilities set in and it is sometimes difficult to make time for sex.

DO YOU have a Question for steven? Email him at:

asksteven@omgmag.com

I am not going to tell you that you shouldn’t expect sex, but is there an underlying reason why the intimacy has stopped? Has someone lost a job? Recently moved? Family stress? Self esteem? Often times these issues can cool down the sheets. You need to connect to your partner; talk to him. Find out why this is happening. If the only thing you were able to connect on was sex, then maybe your relationship needs some strength building. Try not to use alcohol to enhance your mood or pleasure. Alcohol when used responsibly is great in social settings. Keep it there. If you notice any behavior with alcohol that may pose a problem it may be necessary to speak to specialist. Invest some mind and time. And remember; Britney Spears’ hair didn’t grow back overnight. OMG!

COMING OUT: By Deon Davis This is the story about the journey of love, acceptance and the coming out of my son Rashad. Rashad was always very sarcastic, lovable and friendly. He always had a heart of gold and attracted people who needed love and support. He was always there ready to give it. Rashad has two older siblings, both always outgoing and on the go, but Rashad was considered a mama’s boy. At age 13, Rashad started to date girls to down play rumors that started to surface about his sexuality. I as his mother never had a clue that he was gay, but I thought that all of my children had their own personalities and are unique in their own way. In the 9th grade, Rashad received an academic scholarship to Cardinal Gibbons High School and from that point things started to go down hill. My son became depressed as a result of bullying by other students. Rashad reached out to the Dean of the school and was told to “stop his gay ways’’ and the bullying will cease. I immediately withdrew him from that school and registered him into public school. But by that time, the effects had taken a toll. Rashad so desperately wanted to come out, that he drove himself into a deep depression. One day, I looked over at him, and I saw hate and death in my loving child's eyes, it broke my heart. A week later I was cleaning his room and found a note addressed to me asking me ‘what would I do if I found out that he liked men’. I confronted him and he told me he was just under a lot of pressure. A couple days went by and then one day while driving him to school, I noticed his wrist all cut up and I immediately pulled over and begged my son to tell me what was wrong. I promised him that I would be on his side and that I will never hate him or judge him and that my love for him will remain the same if not stronger but again he pushed me aside. I dropped him off to school, called a therapist and by the time school was out the therapist was at our home. Two weeks later Rashad sat me down, and he came out. That was a day of happiness because I had my son back, and all he wanted was for me to love and accept him. He once said that he did not care if no one accepted him just as long as I did. It breaks my heart to know that my son went through all these years of hell because he thought that I would reject him. Rashad is now attending his sophomore year of college, actively involved in the GSA and is the lead activist against anti-gay organizations. My message to parents, friends and peers: we must continue to show love and support for our GLBTQ community. We need them to make a better us. OMG!
