Higher Education THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MUSIC Construction of the Timashev Family Music Building is in its final year and will open Autumn 2022. The fourstory addition to Weigel Hall features a new 250-seat recital hall, a large ensemble rehearsal room, several high-tech classrooms, 36 additional practice rooms and a dedicated research lab. The new building for the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts is under construction next door and will open in 2023. This Arts District is a complement to the 15th & High Project, which includes University Square, the new home for WOSU Public Media, and more. We are pleased to welcome new faculty members Lara Semetko Brooks, associated faculty, jazz and classical vocal performance; and Abby Yeakle Held, associated faculty, oboe. Tanya Sparks has joined the school as Recruitment and Admissions Coordinator. Jim Masters, jazz trombone, was awarded the first-ever Columbus Symphony Orchestra Music Educator Lifetime

Achievement Award. Barry Green, double bass, received the International Society of Bassists 2021 “Special Merit” Recognition Award. The Women’s Glee Club, led by Jordan Saul, music education, won a collaborative grant with the Department of Dance to commission composer Britney Boykin for large work which will premiere in February. Rick Palese, music education, in collaboration with the Centers for African and Latin American Studies, was awarded a university Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Themes grant to support “Global and Popular Music” a new program in that will afford school-aged participants the opportunity to engage in diverse musicmaking and learning experiences alongside School of Music students, faculty, and university and community partners. Eugenia Costa-Giomi, interim director, has been appointed chair of the OMEA Research Committee. CostaGiomi was also awarded a Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Themes COVID grant for special programming — “Muted, Isolated, and Displaced by Social Distancing: Reinventing Collaborations in Performance Ensembles.”
