It has been said that in May the powers that be are going to lift the ban and stop funding COVID preventatives! I am not so sure that is a good idea, but I am not in control. If you are not comfortable, wear a mask! This week has been interesting. Our Black State Senators are BUSY, and that is an understatement. A community meeting earlier this week gave clarity and answered some questions to about LB1024 (can be read here) (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/107/ PDF/Slip/LB1024.pdf). Suggestions were made by the community and two additional bills are being proposed: LB531 and LB785. There will be legislative committee meetings on March 7, 2023, and March 9, 2023, to allow opportunities for testimonies to be heard concerning the funding that everyone is anticipating in our community. There are two committees that will be involved: Appropriations and Urban Affairs. If you cannot attend the committee hearings you are encouraged to write a letter stating your support. All letters must be submitted by the designated date (see below). LB 531(3/7/23 committee hearing) introduced by Senator McKinney, Chair of the Urban Affairs Committee is: LB 531 cleans up language in the Economic Recovery Act (LB 1024 (2022)) by removing certain requirements relating to coordinated plans and directing direct investment to the fund after July 1st, 2023. (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/add_statement.php) This is the Web address to submit written comment. You MUST enter the LB# and you will be taken to the page for the bill and then you click to make written comment. The deadline to submit and verify a comment for the hearing record for LB531 is Monday, March 6, 2023 at 12:00 PM Central Time. Commentary is limited to 500 words. LB785 (3/9/23 committee hearing) introduced by Senator McKinney, for the Appropriations Committee: A BILL FOR AN ACT relating to appropriations; to amend section 84-612, Revised Statutes Cumulative Supplement, 2022; to state legislative intent to appropriate funds to the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Economic Development; to repeal the original section; and to declare an emergency. Be it enacted by the people of the State of Nebraska The second bill is not as clear as the first legislative bill, never the less we are to support both! The deadline to submit and verify a comment for the hearing record for LB785 is Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 12:00 PM Central Time. (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/add_statement.php) This is the website to submit your commentary online. Commentary is limited to 500 words. The Empowerment Network is facilitating transportation and testimonies for the community. Please call 402-502-5153 for more information. Read and know for yourself what is going on politically in our community. I suggest you read LB1024 (see link above: 7 page document) so that YOU understand why the monies are being proposed for this community. It is veery important to get a good understanding so that we can be united as we go. NO, not one check has been cut for the ARPA monies to fund proposed projects, and there are a few more steps in the process. Even though organizations have been named in the first round, it remains to be seen who will stand when this process is completed. We must remain vigilant and UNITED as this process moves forward. Remember UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. •
