Chinese Thames Town: Value of Replication | 泰晤士小鎮
My master's dissertation draws upon the Chinese Thames Town, a replica of an English town to investigate the practice of architectural replication. It does not aim to praise or criticize replication, but rather to explore how it contributes to the Chinese community. It reveals that replication prompted a new connection between inhabitants and their built environment, enabled the construction of an ideal town reflective of cultural values and middle-class desires, and streamlined construction processes that led to unprecedented urban development. The study ultimately highlights the value of architectural replication as a process of innovation to redefine one’s national identity.
