Recreational Clubs: Shaping Hong Kong’s Hybrid Identity | 香港多元性格的育成
My undergraduate dissertation explores Hong Kong’s identity by studying the effects recreational clubs had on forming racial hierarchies during the British colonization. The Hong Kong Club, The Helena May, Young Men’s Christian Association, and The Hong Kong Country Club, were used as case studies. This investigation reveals subtle features of both the physical geography and architecture of clubs that may promote racial discrimination, but conscious attempts by many to combat this by manipulating these characteristics to promote diversity in membership structures and social good.
