Dr. Beatrice Amar M.Sc., Ph.D. will support projects related to wetlands, microbiology, remediation and water management on campus. Dr. Imad Noureddin M.Sc., Ph.D. joins the team as laboratory manager and Pieter Hiemstra is completing a three month internship at Olds College, looking at the feasibility of pyrolysis technology in the region. Takeshi Hamada recently arrived from Japan to investigate algae oil production research with College industry partner Symbiotic Envirotek.

• Two of the College’s agricultural students were the only Canadian students to successfully apply to attend the Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit and State Agricultural Rural Leaders board meetings in Fort McDowell, Ariz. in January (see Story on Pg. 3). • Through funding from Growing Forward, the livestock handling and slaughter facilities have been redeveloped as part of an animal welfare and humane slaughter project with Alberta Agriculture Food and Rural Development. These facilities will be used to provide industry training over the next three years. • Renovations have begun in the animal holding area within the Animal Health Technology program. The College maintains facilities in compliance with guidelines from the Canadian Council on Animal Care. • Farrier students from the one-year Certificate program returned to the college on October 12 2010 after doing their practica across Canada. Most of the students concentrated on the east and west coast. Over the past several years, the demand for the College’s students has far exceeded the supply.

Olds College represented by the only Canadian students invited to the US Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit During January’s Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit and State Agricultural Rural Leaders board meetings in Fort McDowell, Ariz., Olds College was represented by the only two Canadian students to be invited to the summit. Olds College President, Dr. Tom Thompson joined them at the event. Cord Sturtevant, a second-year student in the Agricultural Management Diploma Program and Brandi McCabe a third-year student in the Bachelor of Applied Science Agri Business Program, were on hand to witness and contribute to dialogue on a variety of issues including changing environmental regulations, animal welfare, sustainability, future farm bills, low carbon fuel standards and youth education. “The events discussed this year reflected many of the things I have discussed in my agriculture management classes,” said Sturtevant. “I’ve been involved in agriculture my whole life and it was a great opportunity.” Like McCabe, Sturtevant has an extensive history as a 4-H member and comes from a three generation farm family. Both students are keenly aware their generation will soon be at the forefront of massive changes in their industry. In their

applications for the event, both cited sustainability — both economic and environmental — as one of the primary topics they would be focused on during the summit. “We are extremely proud to have Cord and Brandi invited to this important summit,” said Dr. Tom Thompson, Olds College President. “Agriculture is one of the oldest and most vital elements of our curriculum and we strive continuously to be the premier integrated learning and applied research community in that field. Our students never fail to impress us with their embodiment of that vision.” The province as a whole was represented by The Honourable Lloyd Snelgrove, MLA for VermillionLloydminster and President of the Treasury Board. Alberta hosted dinner meetings with U.S. legislators and co-hosted a Canadian reception. In a press release issued on Jan. 10, The Honourable Jack Hayden, Minister of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that a presence at the Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit “is important in helping us support Alberta’s diverse agriculture industry during this period of economic recovery.”

Olds College Equine Science graduates get access to International Bachelor’s Degree program Olds College’s Equine Science graduates will now have expanded educational and career opportunities, not to mention potential for life-enriching travel, thanks to a new agreement signed with England’s Hartpury College, an Associated Faculty of the University of the West of England. From this year forward, students with a two-year Equine Science Diploma will be able to enrol at Hartpury College and complete an internationallyrecognized Bachelor’s degree in Equine Management (Top-up) route. As well, Olds College has established a financial award through a generous donation from Xerox and a guaranteed scholarship from Hartpury in the amount of £1000 (approximately $1500 Canadian). With tuition similar to Canadian universities, this is a very attractive opportunity

to obtain a B.Sc. in Equine Management.

Olds Fashioned Christmas It all started with a desire to help out the Town of Olds’ annual Olds Fashioned Christmas. HELP (Hands Elevating, Leading, Providing) Centre Coordinator Blair Strocher was approached about finding volunteers for the event, and was most pleased with the result. “We had about 27 students come forward,” he said. “It was fantastic.” One thing led to another and before long, the Olds College Student Association was swept up in the excitement and entering the Christmas parade just for the fun of it.

Seen here (L to R) are Brianna Marion, OCSA President, Cajun Pardis, Communications VP, and Donald MacLeod, Internal VP. Olds Fashioned Christmas was created in 1993, and is a series of community, cultural and recreational events held throughout November and December, organized and coordinated by a team of volunteers. Over the years, it has grown by leaps and bounds to include a large number of events, craft shows and children’s activities, and the extensive involvement of hundreds of volunteers, local businesses, schools and service groups.

Education accessibility expanded through new online courses Further expanding the accessibility of post-secondary education in Central Alberta, Olds College is now offering two of its previously classroom-only certificate programs in an online format. Beginning in February, students will be able to log in and earn an Olds College Fashion Marketing certificate or a Land Administration certificate. “Online programs are a great way for people to enrol in college level programs in a flexible way,” says Jeff Suderman, Director of Student Recruitment. “These courses allow learners to study at home around their schedules and balance the needs of work and family.” Each program has five courses per semester with a one week break in between semesters. The first semester begins February 1, 2011 and ends May 13, 2011. After a brief break, the second semester begins May 24, 2011 and ends on September 2, 2011. Both programs poise graduates for dynamic, relevant careers. Industry demand for highly qualified and motivated land administrators is extremely positive. Graduates work closely with land agents and land managers as a liaison between government agencies, corporate offices, and other oil and gas companies and demand for those skills is expected to increase in the years to come. Fashion Marketing graduates are highly valued employees who find career opportunities in creative retail, consulting, purchasing and management positions in the fashion industry. Additionally, Fashion Marketing is offered to high school students in the Chinook’s Edge School Division as dual-credit courses. “This means that courses meet both high school and College graduation requirements,” adds Suderman.

Think, Learn and Know

Faculty

Starting with this issue, each edition of Horizons will introduce you to some of Olds College’s many talented faculty working to make Olds College a great place to learn. This issue features Tanya McDonald M.Sc., B.Sc. and Dr. Ken Fry. Ph.D.

Tanya is a Bioenergy Research Scientist at the Olds College School of Innovation. Her responsibilities include project acquisition, management and accountability for applied research projects in the area of bioenergy production, waste management, greenhouse gas mitigation and sustainable agriculture. Tanya has been heavily involved in the biodiesel and biogas research programs currently underway at OCSI and specifically the development of a pilot-scale biodiesel facility.

Dr. Ken Fry is the Coordinator, Environmental Horticulture in the Olds College School of Environment. An accomplished entomologist as well as a College instructor, he conducts research focused on biological control of insect pests and integrated pest management. Dr. Fry is coauthor, with Doug Macaulay and Don Williamson, of Garden Bugs of Alberta. He has been quoted as saying “I have never met a bug I didn’t like or at least have a grudging respect for.”

The Olds College President’s 10th annual Christmas Basket event took place on December 15, 2010. Staff and faculty gathered to celebrate the coming holidays and bid silently on an array of baskets containing a wide variety of items. With plenty of eggnog and a visit from Santa as well, the event was once again a festive success, raising $3048.36 for the Olds College Students’ Association Emergency Bursary Fund. Here, Olds College President Dr. Tom Thompson presents the check to OCSA Presiden,t Brianna Marion.

Mutual benefits with Olds College and ASC

Community volunteer John Fisher proudly demonstrating his duties that he and his Job Coach Mary Ellan Toker go out into the community to switch the easels.

If you’ve seen easels bearing stunning depictions of rural life around Central Alberta in recent months, then you are likely well aware of Olds College’s Sealed Bid Auction program. Created to raise funds for the Olds College Opportunities Fund by auctioning off framed artwork, it has benefitted greatly lately from the assistance of volunteers in key communities. In Olds, vital help has come from Accredited Supports to the Community (ASC). Among ASC’s many initiatives, the not-for-profit group operates Community Disability Services, providing programs for adults with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injury. One facet of that program involves getting participants out into

the community in a manner that benefits the community and provides a sense of purpose and well-being to the participant. ASC Job Coach Mary Ellen Toker says that connecting Community Disability Services with the auction program has become an important part of Olds resident, John Fisher’s life. Fisher’s primary task has been the changing of pictures on the easels at various locations. “John takes great pride in his job and he is enjoying it so much that when it is time for his job he independently makes sure that he has his Olds College jacket on,” says Toker. “It gives him a lot of satisfaction, you can tell just by the smile the mention of it brings to his face.”

Benefits from this type of volunteer assistance are also being demonstrated with similar organizations in two other Central Alberta communities. The Drumheller and Region Transition Society began volunteering in November, 2010. In Rocky Mountain House, the Rocky Mountain House Society for Persons with Disabilities, better known as COPE, will begin assisting in February, 2011. By supporting the Olds College Sealed Bid Auction program, these volunteers raise money for the Olds College Opportunities Fund, helping learners benefit from ongoing curriculum renewal and and access to leading technology through operating resources generated by the fund.

“The volunteer assistance that Olds College enjoys from ASC, makes a significant impact in the profitability of the program by reducing staff costs involved in the maintenance of the display sites,” says Jim Ingoldsby, Senior Development Officer, Olds College, Advancement. “We also understand that it is serving these volunteer groups well with the goals that they have and appreciate immensely the support they provide.” For more information about ASC: www.asc-mva.ab.ca

UPDATE Olds College Broncos harvest volleyball medals, display growing strength

The Olds College Women’s and Men’s volleyball teams won Silver and Bronze respectively in early November as the host school for the 2010 Alberta College Athletic League (ACAL) Championships – but fought to carry that momentum through the Western Canadian Championships at The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Saskatoon later that month. The ACAL Championships marked the first major sporting event the Olds College has hosted since it moved into the Community Learning Campus’ new Ralph Klein Centre. “It was fantastic to see the stands full of fans, and fans being able to see the game online from California and the Philippines,” said Greg Lendvay, Olds College Director of Health & Wellness. “We are in a good position to bid to host provincial and national competitions in the coming years.” The men’s team went to five sets to defeat the Portage College Voyageurs for the bronze, 25-18, 27-25, 20-25, 2426, & 15-10.

“After not making playoffs last year, this win really bodes well for the direction we want to go,” said Head Coach John Riemersma. “In the Bronze Medal game the team played with more intensity and energy and was able to come away with the win against Portage. We had some guys really step up, which brought more of a positive feel to the whole game. Even though the game went to the fifth set, I was confident that we could pull it out.” After a fourth place showing last year, the women’s side was looking for improvement even though they showed up with the youngest roster at the tournament. The Lady Broncos found momentum on their side and used that to get to the final against the St. Mary’s University Lightning. In the final, the ladies pushed through adversity to get to a fifth set where they were just two points away from Gold but came up just short. The Lady Broncos won the Silver after losing in five sets, 25-17, 13-25, 29-31, 25-14, & 13-15.

“Even though we did not walk away with the Gold, I still consider every one of those athletes champions,” said CoHead Coach Brittany Ehmann.

Individual accolades were also handed out and the Broncos placed an outstanding seven athletes on the All-Conference Team. Colton Short

and Travis Grant placed from the men’s first team with Jaron Ternan from the Men’s second team joining them. From the women’s teams, Emma Tivador and Alexis West, Anna Tran (first team) and Lindsay Bart (second team) made the All-Conference team as well. Unfortunately, in their drive to take that momentum into the Western Canadian Championships at The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology in Saskatoon on November 26-27, the Broncos came up short despite a thrilling performance. “The men’s team was the talk of the tournament, impressing onlookers with their offensive power,” said Riemersma. “They won their pool and finished the round robin with the best record in the tournament.” In the quarter finals the Men’s Broncos controlled the match for the most part but the Great Plains College Sun Dogs from Swift Current were able to keep it close and in the third set a couple of unlucky points eliminated the Broncos from the tournament. Scores for the last game were 25-17, 21-25, 16-18. Results for the women’s team were similar. “Saskatoon was a great weekend for us, it’s hard to come back after losing gold by two points in the 5 sets at championships,” said Ehmann. “Like the championship, they played great volleyball, taking them to the quarter finals against the Ambrose Lions.” Ambrose won the first set 25-19 and snuck by the second set 27-25.

The Olds College Broncos Women’s Volleyball team (seen here) took Silver at the 2010 Alberta College Athletic League (ACAL) Championships.

Kelly Sutherland Visit Kelly Sutherland, 10-time World Champion Chuckwagon Driver, visited the Olds College Student Alumni Centre in November as part of the College’s Tobacco Reduction program. Sutherland spoke about the dangers of chewing or “spit” tobacco and has been speaking on spit tobacco use in Alberta for several years now. The Olds College Tobacco Reduction Program is available to all students and staff and provides tobacco awareness, prevention, and cessation information. It also supports the College’s school clubs. Sponsorships are available for various events and services.

Surf and Turf event showcases new construction, learning benefits With the final shipment of primary construction materials already onsite and the last phase of construction for the Olds College Landscape Pavilion visible to all, the College held its first annual Surf and Turf Cocktail fundraising party in the Landscape Pavilion itself in December 2010. The event netted $11,000 and was well received by the numerous industry representatives in attendance. “We were extremely proud to be able to showcase this one-of-a-kind Canadian facility to our supporters, industry and educational partners,” said Doug Peters, Chair, Olds College School of Environment. “Now that the building is officially going up, it is great to be accumulating the funding needed for items our students require such as landscaping machinery and tools.” The horticulture industry is currently faced with a tremendous shortage of skilled human resources. In addition, the industry is confronted with the challenge of providing quality hands-on horticultural training from September through April. During much of this time, temperatures fall below zero, shrubs are dormant and the ground is frozen. The Landscape Pavilion is part of the Centre for the Horticulture Industry which also encompasses the Botanic Gardens and Treatment Wetlands. It provides students with year-round opportunities to develop handson horticultural skills in 12,000 sq. ft. of heated indoor space with an earth floor to facilitate projects. Students are able to gain experience in landscape and golf course construction, irrigation installation and testing, arboriculture and other areas of horticulture. The Pavilion also fulfills the industry’s need for a facility to be utilized for industry training and certification programs such as the Certified Horticulture Technician and the Utility Tree Worker Safety Training program for the Industrial Vegetation Management Association of Alberta. Construction of dedicated classrooms and a link between the main pavilion building and Olds College greenhouses expected to be completed by March 31, 2011. Keep a lookout for next year’s Surf and Turf scheduled for Dec 2011.

News from the

The Community Learning Campus (CLC) is a joint, innovative approach to high school, post-secondary, and community education between Olds College and Chinook’s Edge School Division in collaboration with the Town of Olds, Mountain View County, and the University of Alberta. Consisting of five multiuse facilities complete with integrated programming, CLC addresses specific rural needs by sharing resources.

Dual Credit Symposium addresses future of education transition

Sixty-eight representatives from colleges, universities and school divisions across the province gathered at the Community Learning Campus in October to discuss dual credit programming. The benefits of providing programming for high school students to earn credit at both the high school level and the college level are well documented. Dual Credit opportunities ease the transition from high school to college, equip students with a sense of purpose, introduce a variety of course and career options, and familiarize students with post-secondary culture so that it becomes more inviting. The event was the first-ever Dual Credit Symposium held in Alberta, although several education experts have been working on various pilot projects in regions throughout the province.

CLC wins CAEP Awards

The Central Alberta Economic Partnership (CAEP), a regional alliance devoted to collaborative community economic development and rural economic development as well as diversification of Central Alberta’s economy, bestowed two awards upon the CLC at its 2010 CAEP Annual Achievement Awards ceremony. In the collaboration category, eligible through its status as a joint venture, The CLC landed a Silver award for the Dual Credit Symposium. It was also awarded a Silver in the Promotion category for its Community Engagement Sites, cited by CAEP as offering “video conferencing learning opportunities in rural communities [with] such far reach that the coordinator was invited to the Alberta Seniors Services Conference in Calgary to promote rural success stories.”

Meet your Ambassadors

Each year, Olds College names two students as Gala Ambassadors, representing the student body and serving as emcees for the prestigious annual event. The College is proud to introduce Tyler Jenkins and Sarah Code as ambassadors for the 2011 Gala. Don’t be surprised if you see them at other Olds College events throughout the year.

Tyler Jenkins: Currently in his second year as an Accounting Major in the Business Administration program, Tyler hails from a farm just west of Olds, AB. For him, the future holds a little more education, and then it’s on to pursuing his dreams. “I would like to complete my degree in Edmonton,” he says. “After that I would like to work for a few years, gain some experience, and then move into the automotive industry and open my own garage specializing in aftermarket products.” A high-achieving student, Tyler says the options for a solid education close to home in Central Alberta was just one of the reasons he selected Olds College. “I feel the program is teaching me lots of real-life skills that will be useful further into my career. The small class sizes are nice because it allows for lots of one-on-one time with the instructors.”

Private-sector partnerships also have a critical role to play in supporting the CIRE as it establishes new training facilities for the demonstration of high-value food products within the Pomeroy Convention Centre.

ALUMNI REVIEW Olds College Alumni Association Board of Directors 2010-2011 President Laurinda Parkinson ‘69 Vice President Jason Finnigan ‘01 Honourary President Edith Edge ‘51 Treasurer Marjorie Brewin’59 Secretary Gerry Coen ‘58 Directors James Burns ‘67 Glen Aldred ‘58 Curtis Miller ‘03 John Perry ‘63 Joan (Sandra) Hanson ‘59 (One Position Vacant) OCSA Rep Brent Gillingwater Faculty Rep Lyle Statham

It is once again time for me to sit down and let everyone know what has been happening within Olds College Alumni Association. As you will note in the last Horizons, I am once again in the President’s Chair, and happy to be there. Jason Finnigan is still our Vice President, and we appreciate his participation when he can organize it with his busy work schedule. Marjorie Brewin has been elected as our new Treasurer and we thank her very much for accepting that position. Gerry Coen has also agreed to remain as our Secretary for one more year and we benefit greatly from his expertise in this position. This year we are pleased to welcome Lyle Statham as the Faculty Representative, and he has already put forward some excellent suggestions which we are acting upon with the assistance of our Alumni Officer, Brett Humphries. I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all the members of this year’s Board. Everyone is so willing to participate and support OCAA. We must also express our appreciation of the assistance and support we receive from Advancement and our Alumni Officer, Brett Humphries in particular.

Olds College President Dr. H. J. (Tom) Thompson Alumni Officer Brett Humphries

In November, OCAA purchased a wreath to be presented at the Remembrance Day ceremonies. We asked that the Cadets lay this wreath for us, and we thank them for doing that on our behalf. The computer in our Museum finally became obsolete with the upgrading of the College system. Brett Humphries stepped in and asked if we would be interested in one of the computers within the College that had been replaced with an upgrade. He contacted Mike Wareman for us, and voila! – Mike had a lovely newer computer that he has installed in the Museum for us. He even came over later and installed our printer program onto the computer. We feel very fortunate that we were able to receive this piece of equipment and at no cost to OCAA. Thank you Mike and everyone who had a hand in that process. I have attended the first meeting of the Olds College 2013 Centennial Governance Team. It was a very interesting session, and I am looking forward to seeing the progress made towards the Centennial projects. There are to be some very interesting projects taking place that year. To name just a few: an International Designers Fashion Show, the Centennial Black Tie Gala, Inter-Collegiate Equestrian World Cup, the 60th World Plowing Championships, a 100th Anniversary Centennial Book, and an Olds College Centennial Homecoming. There are several other events planned, but not finalized at this point. The Centennial Homecoming will likely take place in the fall of the year, and will not interfere with, or replace, the July Summer Reunion. Because of the Plowing Championships, the possibility exists that we may have to adjust the July weekend for the Summer Reunion. This will be decided

Memorials The Alumni Board respectfully notes the passing of the following Olds College Alumni and Staff, and extends its condolences to their families and friends. Shirley Delores (Blower) Humphries

Class of 1986, Secretarial Arts

Born in Maple Leaf, AB, Shirley grew up in the Crowsnest Pass area before moving to Calgary. Married to Jack Humphries in 1965, two children, Brett and Cheri, quickly followed. Ultimately, the family settled in Olds and operated the well-remembered local business House of Shoes. After graduating from the College’s Secretarial Arts program in 1986, she worked in the health industry until the time of the illness that ultimately claimed her life. A volunteer with organizations ranging from the Girl Guides to Relief Society organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints, she will be missed by her remaining extended family.

Nicholas Baier (1991- 2010)

Agriculture Management: Production Major

Raised in the small east Central Alberta farming community of Altario, AB. Nicholas is remembered by his family as “a kind, gentle, caring person who was liked by everyone he met and happiest working out on the ranch. He was valedictorian of his graduating class in 2009 and was a keen student at Olds College. His dream since he was a little boy was to work with his family on the ranch; he was in Olds working toward that dream.”

at a later date, but be assured that the Summer Reunion in 2013 will still take place in July. The Planning Committee for the Centennial celebrations will be organizing the Olds College Centennial Homecoming, with some assistance from the OCAA. I have seen a tentative agenda, and it looks like it will be an exciting time. Be sure to read through our Hall of Fame and Hall of Merit application forms, and submit your nominations to us before March 31, 2011. We are most anxious to receive nominations for the “first’” Hall of Merit award, as well as our ongoing Hall of Fame Award. This year, we will go back to having our Class Agent meeting at the same time as the Open House in April. With Brett’s assistance, we are going to try a new approach in contacting our Class Agents, and determine the level of interest in attending such a meeting. I would like to encourage the Class of 1961, who will be celebrating their 50th year this summer, to contact the Alumni Officer so we can assist in notifying Classmates for their Summer Reunion. One last comment. Many of the more senior Alumni have voiced opinions that Horizons is not what the Alumni Review used to be. They are looking for more information on their classmates and friends. We can only print the information if it is sent in to us, and no one seems to be providing information we can publish. We welcome any and all updates from our Alumni, and will publish what we can with the authors permission. Laurinda Parkinson OCAA President

Old Timers This past fall, Lucille and Walter Bushfield won the title of Oldest Old timers at the Crossfield Old Timers Association Banquet. The event marked the first time a married couple who had never won before would claim the title. Lucille, a Home Economics major, graduated from Olds College in 1941 and Walter, an Agriculture major, graduated in 1945. Hailing from the Balzac area, they are the current Alumni Class Agents for their graduating years, respectively.

Entrance Awards Olds College is pleased to announce the continuation of its Entrance Award program for fall 2011. Students will be eligible to apply for the award if they are from Central Alberta, are entering the business program or are competing on Bronco’s athletic teams. Entrance awards are funded by an annual grant program from the Provincial government. Olds College is using over $200,000 to make college education more accessible for central Albertans. The benefits of a College education pay off over a lifetime, both financially and by working in a job you love,” said Jeff Suderman, Director of Student Recruitment and Admissions. “We are excited to help students make post-secondary education a reality.” In order to be eligible for the award students must be admitted to the college and apply for the award prior to August 15. Athletic awards are provided through coaches who actively scout and recruit athletes for their athletic programs (basketball, volleyball, futsal and curling). Interested athletes should visit gobronco’s.ca and get in contact with a coach. Visit oldscollege.ca for more details or call 403-556-8281.

YOUNG ALUMNI Trunk Shows Target Blue Jean Blues

Maya Milan with some of her product.

Forget wandering up and down the mall searching for the perfect pair of jeans. Through home-based trunk shows, a Strathmore company is making finding denim that fits easier than ever. Owner Maya Milan describes Mink and Manure as a premium denim company that also specializes in western accessories. The company has a storefront in Strathmore and in a typical week hosts two to three trunk shows, the majority of which are in Calgary. At a trunk show, sales representatives travel to homes in Calgary and surrounding area, with trunks full of denim, shoes and accessories in what Milan refers to as “a personal shopping experience.” “You can hold a glass of wine, have a drink, think about it, try it on, take it off, try it on again,” says Milan of the relaxed environment an at-home trunk show provides. Milan says finding the perfect pair of jeans “can be a life changing moment.” She remembers one woman who considered finding jeans that fit her an “aha moment.”

Elaine Gallant recently hosted a Mink and Manure trunk show in Calgary and had to stop one guest from over-spending. “She was getting crazy,” says Gallant of the guest, who for the first time in her life had found jeans that fit her petite figure. Gallant, who says she always has a hard time finding denim that fits her body, also found jeans that complimented her figure. “They lift everything and fit so well. “The quality of the material is excellent so to me it’s worth getting a couple of pairs a year and spending the money,’” says 62-year-old Gallant. Gallant had previously attended two Mink and Manure trunk shows before deciding to host one in her Calgary home. She sent her husband and grandchildren away for the evening, served fruit and wine and enjoyed the company of a dozen female friends of all ages. “It was a really comfortable party,” says Gallant.

“She put these jeans on and said ‘I never knew I had a nice bum.’”

“It was just women enjoying each other’s humour and fun and enjoying the clothes.” Milan says guests love the fact their friends can offer honest opinions of the clothing in a nopressure environment.

Mink and Manure carries a variety of premier denim brands as well as some clothing, boots, jewelry and pursues, hand-picked from fashion lines. Items change depending on the season so no two trunk shows are ever alike.

Unlike other direct-sale models where consumers have to wait for the product they order to come in, Mink and Manure allows customers to go home with the clothing they purchase. Started by Jennifer Friend and Cathryn Hagel, Mink and

Manure celebrated its fourth anniversary in November. “Their goal was to reach a niche market of fashionable farm wives,” says Milan. As the company grew, so did Friend and Hagel’s families and in August of 2010 the opportunity came up for Milan, who is Friend’s cousin, to take over the company. “I absolutely jumped at the chance . . . it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a while,” says Milan, who studied fashion design at Olds College and has a threeyear-old daughter.

“Just because we call something western doesn’t mean somebody that is a complete downtown city girl wouldn’t find it fashionable,” says Milan who was born and raised in Calgary. “It’s just women looking for the fun night of shopping and jeans that they love that fit them.” Milan thinks busy women, who don’t have time to wander up and down a mall searching for clothing that fits, love the simplicity and fun that Mink and Manure offers.

Milan says the company has plans for an online store, where customers can purchase products and down the road she hopes to one day design clothing for the company. Today the company’s motto is “Where Hollywood Fashion meets the Wild West,” and Milan says happy customers are not limited to farmer’s wives.

“People really enjoy that personal shopping experience of having us come to them in the comfort of their home where they can snack and drink and be with their friends.” By Annalise Klingbeil Reprinted with permission of the Calgary Herald.

YOUNG ALUMNI Growing all across the continent If there was any disappointment to be had from this year’s first annual Surf and Turf event at all, it was only for Irene Borody and Brandon Steene, two young Olds College alumni who very much wanted to attend the School of Environment’s new signature event but couldn’t. Of course, when you are knee deep in a career down in warmer climates (during one of the continent’s coldest days of the year, no less) as a result of your Horticulture education at Olds College, there are worse things that can happen. Borody and Steene work for ValleyCrest Landscape Companies, the US’ largest integrated landscape services company with seven distinct business units that deliver a full array of landscape services to a wide variety of commercial and residential customers across the globe. Based in Calabasas, Calif. with annual revenue of nearly $1 billion, more than 10,000 employees and more than 100 locations nationwide, the company has sought out the expertise of Olds College graduates on numerous occasions. At one point, Borody and Steene, both originally hailing from Calgary, were among those graduates. Today, they are often involved in recruiting Olds College graduates themselves, something top of mind for them as the Surf and Turf event went by. At the time of this issue of Horizon’s

22

printing, they were on track for a late January visit and looking forward to it. Borody, who co-founded the first Olds College Landscape Club in 2005 and graduated with an Applied Degree in Landscape Management in 2006, says the advice of her instructors has changed her life. “I initially planned on moving to Edmonton following graduation, but one instructor encouraged me to take an interview with ValleyCrest. I applied and was the only one offered a position for the program’s Directed Field Study [DFS],” said Borody. “Chloe HegenSteene, also an Olds College Alumni [class of 2000, as well as Steene’s wife], mentored me. I completed my third year at Olds College in March of 2006, made my way to San Jose in April, and started my DFS.” Today Borody is a Landscape

Account Manager for the Cisco Systems 98 acre campus in San Jose, and numerous Californian business parks and home owner association complexes. For Steene who graduated in 1998 with a Horticulture Diploma in Landscape Management and again in 2000 with a Bachelor of Applied Horticulture Technology degree, the career path was similar. “In December of 1998 I came across a brochure for ValleyCrest. Two other students and myself were interested in completing our DFS with the company,” said Steene. “I made contact with the ValleyCrest corporate office and they sent a representative to Olds College to interview the three of us.” A series of phone interviews took place after the initial face-to-face and Steene was accepted to complete his DFS with ValleyCrest. Currently he manages the Silicon Valley Branch of ValleyCrest in San Jose.

Duties for Borody and Steene and don’t stop with their current titles. Through their hard work and the work of other Olds College graduates who have migrated south to ValleyCrest, the Fortune 500 company has recognized the value of the College’s training to the point that trips north to Olds to scout talent are not uncommon. “I actively participate in routine trips to Olds College for recruiting,” said Borody. “Since my time with ValleyCrest, we have recruited three other Olds College degree students for their DFS.”
