After much discussion and debate we settled on a new Vision statement: “Inspiring people to lead active, healthy lives.”

The discussion included the need to future proof our purpose to incorporate potential areas of work that add to the one-dimensional aim of encouraging physical activity. We need to be able to help people improve their diet, sleep, mental health and emotional wellbeing going forward. Defining a new vision is just the start – this will ultimately link to our priorities, programmes and performance management going forward and these will become clearer as we work this all through in the coming weeks and months.

t’s a pleasure to update you in our second newsletter.

There’s still so much going on and this edition has some great pictures from what was another excellent awards night. A key development in play at the moment is the finalisation of our new strategy & brand refresh. The Board, along with current and former staff reps met on a Monday evening in September to finalise the Company Vision and Values, following the away days with colleagues and Board members back in 2019.

The new agreed Values that came through with unanimous agreement are: • • • • •

These will be developed further going forward, and another significant change is the agreement to formally shift our company name and brand exclusively to “Oldham Active”. This will take some time to wash through, but you will notice the identity shift over the coming months.

Glenn Tolan Failsworth Leisure Centre – work is well under way in converting the excisting kicking fit facility to become a dual use space to include a designated Spin Studio and an upgraded young person’s gym provision with updated cardiovascular equipment for the school.

Oldham Leisure Centre Car Park - The long awaited installation of the new carpark barriers, at Oldham Leisure Centre, has now been signed off and all the equipment has been placed on order. Preliminary work will be taking place over the next couple of weeks to run new cabling between the barrier island and reception. This will cause minimal disruption, if any, to the existing parking but will facilitate a faster installation once the new system arrives.

● Financial performance to September 21 ● Income for the first half year is over budget and expenditure is underspent so the position to date is good! ● Membership and swim lessons continue to improve and are now around 90% of the prepandemic levels in the current month ● However the trading position for the year remains challenging and in comparison to 2019/20 income is £0.8m behind for the 6 months to September so we still have a long way to go ● We have now drawn down £172.5k of additional support from the £0.8m available from the Council this year ● Future pressures, aside from income, will be for utilities with rising prices, as well as national living wage increases due to next year ● Work continues on the contract extension beyond March 2023

Macmillan’s Coffee Morning is the biggest fundraising event to support people living with cancer People all over the UK host their own Coffee Morning and donations raised on the day are made to Macmillan. On Friday 24th September, Saddleworth Pool & Leisure Centre hosted a coffee morning and raised £431.00 for the charity.

On the 10th October we finally delivered our 8th Annual staff Awards Evening, although delayed it was a much anticipated evening of reflection and celebration for our wonderful employees.

A large part of 2020 was spent with our buildings closed, and the vast majority of colleagues were furloughed for at least some of that time. During the year much worse than all that, too many of you will have lost someone close and we, as the OCL family, lost our own much loved colleagues, Zoe Barlow and Jeanette Ghayour since the previous awards night.

These awards don’t get easier to win! 110 individuals and teams were nominated for at least one award, demonstrating that despite the challenges of 2020, so many of you stepped up and went over and above to keep the business afloat, serve the needs of others in our community and raise the collective reputation of the “OCL DreamTeam” to new heights. To all the nominees and winners well done!

The night was hosted as always at Smokies Best Western Hotel, Oldham and provided once again a fantastic venue for the occasion. The event welcomed over 70 of the company’s employees, stakeholders and partners.

A FOCUS On Leadership Emotional Intelligence – a brief introduction It is argued that the ideal leader is one who never lets their temper get out of control, that has complete trust of their team, listens to their team, is easy to talk to and approachable, and always makes careful, informed decisions. This ideal leader is one that has a high degree of “emotional Intelligence”.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, as well as those of the people you work and interact with. Emotional Intelligence is needed to be a successful leader, for instance the stressed leader that shouts and makes demands from their staff will be less effective that the leader that shows control composure and calmly assesses and calculates situations. “People with a high degree of emotional intelligence know what they’re feeling, what their emotions mean, and how these emotions can affect other people” (www.mindtools.com, 2019).

Daniel Goleman outlines five key elements to EI; 1) Self-awareness Know and understand your own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals and recognise their impact on others while using gut feelings to guide decisions.

2) Self-regulation Manage or redirect one’s disruptive emotions and impulses and adapt to changing circumstances.

3) Social skill Manage other’s emotions to move people in the desired direction.

4) Empathy Recognise, understand, and consider other people’s feelings especially when making decisions 5) Motivation Motivate oneself to achieve for the sake of achievement.

Help shape the future direction of Oldham Community Leisure.

OCL has been set up specifically to allow involvement from staff and community members in the strategic management of the organisation. It is the major leisure provider in Oldham and serves all members of the community. Almost everyone in Oldham has been served by the organisation at some point in their lives, or knows a friend or family member who uses the facilities managed by OCL. Shareholders get the opportunity to attend General Meetings, speak at the meetings if they wish, and vote on key strategic decisions of the organisation; the Industrial and Provident Society principle of “one member, one vote” applies.

Those shareholders who wish to get further involved can put themselves forward for a seat on the Board when they are advertised. Shareholders, by request, are eligible to receive minutes of Quarterly Board meetings which provide detailed information on performance and news about forthcoming developments.

All shareholders will be sent a copy of the Stakeholder Newsletter which are circulated throughout the year to keep stakeholders updated on company news and performance information.

How To Apply The cost of a share, once awarded, is £20. To apply for a share, requests must be made in writing to the company secretary through the following email address: info@ocll.co.uk Shareholder requests are required to state their name, address, contact details and are encouraged to include relevant background information and details about why they wish to become a shareholder. OCL staff members who apply are automatically approved and once received, all other applications will be presented by the Company Secretary at the next scheduled Board meeting for consideration and approval by the Board. All applicants are then notified of the Board decision and if successful, required to pay the non-refundable fee and the share certificate and copy of Company Rules are then sent to them or made available for collection in person.

Shares cannot be withdrawn or transferred and they carry no right to interest, dividend or bonus. Shares must be forfeited and cancelled on cessation of membership from whatever cause and the fee paid will become the property of the Society. A member shall hold one

I became a swimming teacher 2 1/2 years ago, My girls have been swimming with OCL since they were 8 weeks old and they have always enjoyed them. I loved taking them and thought “I’d make a great teacher.” I love helping children progress, gain confidence and improve their swimming skills. My managers have supported me from the beginning and helped me to progress and gain more qualifications, I feel very lucky to love my job!

Sheena Finegan Welcome Our New Chair Sheena lives in Oldham with her family with her husband and children. Sheena is a mum to four, three boys and a girl and a regular user of our services at OCL. Sheena has been on the board for the past four years and is immensely proud of all the work that the team have done particularly during the last 18 months where it’s been difficult for everybody.

Sheena has worked in Oldham for many years latterly at First Choice Homes. Her passion is for people and her current role as a leadership consultant allows her the opportunity to work with lots of organisations on their leadership

Delivering a great experience to our customers is something Sheena is passionate about and an approach that we can all get behind no matter what our role in the organisation and is an area OCL have a strong track record in already.

On Friday the 29th October we held our 2nd ‘Frighteningly fantastic’ Halloween Zumba event at Oldham Leisure Centre.

Led by Sarah Matthews, our resident Zumba instructor, as last year the event was a massive success with over 120 customers coming along to enjoy the event which was supported by a great set up with lights smoke and spooky Latin beats!

Chicken Satay Salad

STEP 1 Pour the tamari into a large dish and stir in the curry powder, cumin, garlic and honey. Mix well. Slice the chicken breasts in half horizontally to make 4 fillets in total, then add to the marinade and mix well to coat. Set aside in the fridge for at least 1 hr, or overnight, to allow the flavours to penetrate the chicken.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, mix the peanut butter with the chilli sauce, lime juice, and 1 tbsp water to make a spoonable sauce. When ready to cook the chicken, wipe a large non-stick frying pan with a little oil. Add the chicken and cook, covered with a lid, for 5-6 mins on a medium heat, turning the fillets over for the last min, until cooked but still moist. Set aside, covered, to rest for a few mins.

STEP 3 While the chicken rests, toss the lettuce wedges with the cucumber, shallot, coriander and pomegranate, and pile onto plates.

Spoon over a little sauce. Slice the chicken, pile on top of the salad and spoon over the remaining sauce. Eat while the chicken is still warm.

Nutritional Simple Meal Ingredients:

1tbsp tamari 1tsp medium curry powder ¼tsp ground cumin 1 garlic clove, finely grated 1tsp clear honey 2 skinless chicken breast fillets (or use turkey breast) 1tbsp crunchy peanut butter (choose a sugar-free version with no palm oil, if possible) 1tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1tbsp lime juice sunflower oil, for wiping the pan 2 Little Gem lettuce hearts, cut into wedges ¼ cucumber, halved and sliced 1 banana shallot, halved and thinly sliced coriander, chopped seeds from ½ pomegranate

I just wanted to send a quick email to show my appreciation for the staff at Failsworth Sports Centre.

I have been a member of the centre before but after a couple of weeks stopped or not attended. In June this year I decided I wanted to return to the gym to lose weight and have more energy for my 2 children. As I walked in the gym I went to the instructor and told him he needed to help me!! Yet I didn’t know how much he really would help me…. So I would like to say a BIG thank you to Stuart!! He really is an absolutely amazing gym instructor and a lovely person. I started attending the gym in the morning and was shown by Stuart different exercises/ways to improve my fitness. I knew how much I needed the gym physically but didn’t realise how much I needed it mentally especially after working from home for 18 months. He really is a shining star and brings such joy to the gym. I am sure as a company you appreciate him as a member of staff but I just really needed to send this to acknowledge his hard work and effort. Not just for me but for everyone he has time for every person in that gym and it shows as people feel happy and comfortable around him. Thanks Stuart for being you!!!

I now attend 4/5 times a week I have definitely got the gym bug and I really enjoy it. I do think all the staff at Failsworth are brilliant but would like to also say thank you to Tayshan and Lee who help me and my friend do circuit workouts or provide us with a programme to follow. These two young lads are an asset to your company as they are fresh and enthusiastic. Although the facilities are not brand new like some of Oldham’s Leisure Centres the staff at this one are definitely very valuable. The desk staff are always friendly and attentive. More award success for our own Kelly...?

We are pleased to announce that, after winning the OCL Employee of the Year, Kelly Tattersall (Community Development & Partnership Manager) has been shortlisted for an award in Greater Manchester’s Health & Care Champion Awards 2021 in the Adaptable Champion category. Winners are announced on Thursday, 11th November 2021 and we wish her all the best in winning this award. There were almost 500 nominations overall and 36 individuals from across the NHS, local authorities, charities, care homes and many other sectors have been shortlisted across 12 different categories.

A panel made up of representatives from across our public services, plus patient representatives, reviewed all the nominations and agreed the final shortlist. The winners themselves will be announced at a virtual ceremony in November. The event will also provide special recognition for those who have stood out over the past 18 months; our Young Champion as well as The Mayors Special Recognition Award. The GM Champion Awards are the only Greater Manchester-wide awards to recognise those people who regularly go the extra mile to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Greater Manchester. This year’s awards are that extra bit special as we recognise those who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic; from health and care staff to key workers, volunteers and community champions.

Categories include our key worker and community champions, those who have driven innovation, volunteers, leaders at any level and those who have helped improve the wellbeing of those around them during such a challenging year. The awards are organised by Greater Manchester Health; Social Care Partnership, the body that oversees the area’s £6bn devolved health and social care budget, with support from the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

They are even more special this year, as we are able to recognise everyone who has gone above and beyond during the pandemic.
