MAŁOPOLSKA DAYS IN BRUSSELS 2012

The picturesque atmosphere of Małopolska through the paintings of contemporary artists is a selection of works shown at the exhibition in the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland in Brussels, which originated during the ‘Colours of Lesser Poland’ International Painting Plein-Air held for a thirteenth time in August 2012 in Miechów. Artists from eight countries were participating: Austria, England, Kurdistan, Lithuania, Mexico, Slovakia, Ukraine and Poland. For objective reasons, i.e. small exhibition space, only a portion may be shown of the bounty of painting achievement that came to life during the two-week plein-air.

The exhibition is written into the programme of the Lesser Poland Days in Brussels and therefore only Polish artists were invited to participate and then only those having a personal relationship with the Lesser Poland Region.

Artists invited to Brussels represent different artistic environments and different generations. They are united by a wish for a joint action in the field of finding creative inspirations derived from the Lesser Poland landscape processed basing on their own experience, the philosophy of comprehending the contemporary role of art and individual categories of beauty. They are also united by a wish to invite the spectator to interact with diversity in art, such as the recipient are also diverse. Artists looking for creative inspirations in interacting with nature do not seek to shock with the originality of their artistic search, quite the contrary. They convince that contemporary art may still draw strength from peacefully coexisting with nature, its harmony, rhythms and contrasts.

I would like to express my gratitude to Ambassador Jerzy Drożdż, who invited artists to present the exhibition in Brussels in order with a patriotic pride and care to show our Small Homeland in the Centre of Europe.

Małopolskie klimaty malarskie w obrazach współczesnych artystów to wybór prac prezentowanych na wystawie w Stałym Przedstawicielstwie RP w Brukseli, powstałych w czasie Międzynarodowego Pleneru Malarskiego „Barwy Małopolski”, zorganizowanego już po raz trzynasty w sierpniu 2012 roku w Miechowie. Uczestniczyli w nim artyści ośmiu krajów: Anglii, Austrii, Kurdystanu, Litwy, Meksyku, Słowacji, Ukrainy i Polski. Ze względów obiektywnych, tzn. małej powierzchni wystawienniczej, można pokazać tylko fragment plonu malarskich dokonań, które powstały w czasie dwutygodniowego pleneru.

Wystawa jest wpisana do program Małopolskich Dni w Brukseli i dlatego do udziału w niej zaproszono tylko polskich artystów i tylko tych, którzy mają osobisty związek z Regionem Małopolski. Zaproszeni do Brukseli artyści reprezentują różne środowiska artystyczne i różne pokolenia. Łączy ich chęć wspólnego działania na niwie poszukiwania inspiracji twórczych czerpanych z małopolskiego krajobrazu, przetwarzanego w oparciu o własne doświadczenia, filozofię pojmowania współczesnej roli sztuki i indywidualnych kategorii piękna. Łączy ich również chęć zaproszenia widza do obcowania z różnorodnością w sztuce, tak jak różnorodni są również odbiorcy. Artyści poszukujący twórczych inspiracji w obcowaniu z przyrodą nie chcą bulwersować oryginalnością poszukiwań artystycznych, lecz wręcz przeciwnie. Przekonują, że współczesna sztuka wciąż może czerpać siłę z współistnienia w zgodzie z naturą, jej harmonią, rytmiką i kontrastami.

Skladam serdeczne podziękowania panu Ambasadorowi Jerzemu Drożdżowi, który zaprosił artystów do zaprezentowania wystawy w Brukseli, by z patriotyczną dumą i troską pokazać naszą Małą Ojczyznę w Centrum Europy.

Picturesque atmosphere of Małopolska through the paintings of contemporary artists.

The event of outdoor painting is always a surprise. It is because various artists of varied, and sometimes extremely different personalities arrive in Miechów and paint the city or the surrounding areas, or something completely different. The picturesque, hilly landscape or the panorama of Miechów itself inspire the painters, but each and every of them in a different manner. Some of them, overpowered by its charm, attempt to capture it, and record it on the canvas. Others see in the landscape a small part of the Universe and strive to make it a part of this incomprehensibly enormous entity. There are also artists who are confined to their own world and do not leave it; nevertheless, they do look out of it in order to cast a glance around and return to their private realms. Other painters are stimulated by landscapes and colours of the earth and the sky, and play with shapes and colours.

And there are also other kinds of artists that we could long enumerate, because, as a matter of fact, each and every artist is different and unique.

In his painting “Before the Night”, Marek Hołda depicted the panorama of Miechów covered with a dark, clouded sky. The coming night submerges everything in dark blue or even black shades, out of which sharp, prestorm light extracts a characteristic silhouette of the Miechów sanctuary with its tower and the horizontal strip of fields. These elements build plans, leading forward and closing at the top with a range of dark hills and a small fragment of the sky. At the bottom, they are reflected by a stockade of a nearly black forest, separated from the casually-painted foreground by a bright ribbon of light. This absence of final touches introduces an indispensable element of lightness.

Przyjeżdżają bowiem do Miechowa różni artyści o odmiennych, czasem skrajnie różnych osobowościach i malują miasto lub jego okolice, albo coś zupełnie innego. Malowniczy, pagórkowaty pejzaż bądź panorama samego Miechowa inspirują malarzy, ale każdego inaczej. Jedni, poddając się jego urokowi, starają się uchwycić go i utrwalić na płótnie. Inni widzą w pejzażu cząstkę wszechświata i usiłują wkomponować ją w ten niepojęty ogrom. Są też artyści zamknięci we własnym świecie, którzy nie opuszczają go, aczkolwiek wyglądają zeń, by rozejrzeć się wokół i powrócić do siebie. I bywają także tacy, których pejzaż, barwy ziemi i nieba pobudzają do zabawy kształtami i kolorami. A są jeszcze inni – można długo wyliczać, jako że w gruncie rzeczy każdy artysta jest inny i niepowtarzalny.

Marek Hołda w obrazie „Przed nocą” pokazał panoramę Miechowa przykrytego ciemnym, zachmurzonym niebem.

Nadciągająca noc zanurza wszystko w czerniejących granatach, z których ostre, jakby przedburzowe światło wydobywa charakterystyczną sylwetę miechowskiej świątyni z wieżą i poziome smugi pól. One budują plany prowadząc w dal, zamkniętą u góry pasmem ciemnych wzgórz i skrawkiem nieba. Odpowiada mu u dołu palisada prawie czarnego lasu, oddzielonego jasną wstążką światła od pierwszego planu, malowanego niedbale. Ten brak wykończenia wprowadza niezbędny element lekkości.

Stanisław Chomiczewski chose a different season. His “August Landscape” is cheerful, full of ochre colours and engulfed by light, which makes it display the delicate shades of pink and violet. It is only the foreground that is different by warm brown colours of the roofs and green colours of the trees. The nearly abstract rectangles of the fields form the synthesis of the landscape. The painter has composed the painting of the planes which are situated upon each other, attracting the eye deeply to the horizon situated high above, and ever less clear and ever brighter, ever more filled with light, like the disappearing echo of music.

Stanisław Chomiczewski wybrał inną porę. Jego „Sierpniowy pejzaż” jest pogodny, zatopiony w ugrach i oblany światłem, które nadaje im delikatne tony różu i fioletu. Tylko pierwszy plan wyróżnia się ciepłymi brązami dachów i zielenią drzew. Niemal abstrakcyjne prostokąty pól tworzą syntezę krajobrazu. Malarz skomponował obraz z planów, które piętrzą się, wciągając oko w głąb aż po umieszczony wysoko horyzont, coraz mniej wyraźne, coraz jaśniejsze, bardzie świetliste jak niknące echo muzyki.

The landscape of Miechów is presented by Krystyna Olchawa in a completely different manner, as she has chosen the fragment in which one can see a meadow and a pond with its banks fully covered by growing reed, both confined by a strip of coppice. A low-situated horizon makes the enormous, light-blue sky stretch above everything. Light, white palls are moving above it, shining with a slightly yellow light, casting reflections upon the surface of the pond, path and bushes. The painting has been created with the use of expressive, blurred stains, intertwined with the unrestricted delicate strokes of the brush, thanks to which it gains lightness. This is “A Sunny Day” indeed.

Zgoła inaczej ukazała miechowski pejzaż Krystyna Olchawa. Wybrała bowiem fragment, na którym widzimy łąkę i staw z brzegami porosłymi trzciną, zamknięte pasmem zagajnika. Nisko umieszczony horyzont pozwala rozciągać się nad wszystkim ogromnemu, błękitnemu niebu. Płyną po nim lekkie białe obłoki świecące żółtawym światłem, rzucającym refleksy na taflę stawu, ścieżkę i krzewy. Obraz malowany jest ekspresyjnymi, rozmytymi plamami, to znów swobodnymi delikatnymi pociągnięciami pędzla, dzięki czemu zyskuje lekkość. Prawdziwie „Słoneczny dzień”.

Sacha Stawiarski looks at the world with irony and understanding. In his cityscape, that is not entirely literal and depicts perhaps a market or a square, the life of the city is concentrated. A few men are playing cards, some people are sitting and watching, someone is reading, someone else is pulling a perambulator, and yet another person is falling down, or leaning over someone who is lying flat, intoxicated with the contents of the flask visible next to him. The dog is well acquainted with all that, and is therefore looking straight ahead, at the painter, as at something new. The lively and bright colours, clear contours and slightly cubistic stylization evoke the mood of a cheerful “folk-style” tale. This small picture, aiming to present earthly life, has been, in an amusingly perverse manner, called “Lunar Landscape” by the artist.

Sacha Stawiarski przygląda się światu z ironią i wyrozumiałością. Oto w umownie potraktowanym pejzażu, może na placu lub na skwerze, toczy się życie miasta. Kilku mężczyzn gra w karty, parę osób siedzi i obserwuje, ktoś czyta, ktoś inny ciągnie wózek, jeszcze inny przewraca się lub pochyla nad kimś, kto leży zmożony napojem wypitym z leżącej obok flaszki. Pies zna to dobrze, patrzy więc na wprost, na malarza jako coś nowego. Żywe, jasne kolory, wyraźne kontury i kubizująca stylizacja wywołują nastrój pogodnej „ludowej” opowieści. Ten całkiem ziemski obrazek artysta przewrotnie zatytułował „Księżycowy pejzaż”.

The diptych of Stanisław Białogłowicz, titled “The Shrove of Miechów”, presents a totally different mood. Two paintings are landscapes, yet internal landscapes. Vertical in their settings, the paintings seem to be the facades of tenement houses with small windows, through which various silhouettes and symbols can be seen that refer to our life. However, as a matter of fact, they do not display any edifices, but the entire world, or rather life itself, painted in dark red. Against this pulsing background, the artist has situated small icons, in which we can recognize Christian symbols: fish, carrying the Cross, and, at the bottom, the silhouettes of saints and angels in poses known from iconography. The Shrove of Turin, the name of which is referred to by the title of this painting, is an image of Christ, whereas the one in the painting displays us, or, to be more precise, our prayer. Or, perhaps, the prayer of the artist.

Jakże odmienny nastrój ma dyptyk Stanisława Białogłowicza, zatytułowany „Całun miechowski”. W pewnym sensie te dwa obrazy są pejzażami. Wewnętrznymi. Pionowego formatu obrazy to niby fasady kamienic z małymi oknami, przez które widać rozmaite postaci i symbole, odnoszące się do naszego życia. Ale w istocie nie przedstawiają budowli lecz cały świat, lub raczej życie samo, namalowane ciemną czerwienią. Na jej pulsującym tle umieścił artysta niewielkie ikony, na których rozpoznajemy chrześcijańskie symbole, rybę, dźwiganie krzyża, u dołu zaś postaci świętych i anioły w pozach znanych z ikonografii. Całun turyński, do którego obrazy nawiązują tytułem, jest wizerunkiem Chrystusa, ten zaś pokazuje nas, a ściślej rzecz ujmując - naszą modlitwę. A może sam jest modlitwą artysty?

Man will always brood over the mystery of the beginning of things. Needless to say, this problem also concerns artists. Marek Sak confronted it in his own manner, even though in his “On the Eve of Creation” we can see that he is acquainted with various opinions on this subject. According to one of them, the Creator is the wisdom, and the world is mathematics. For this very reason, Sak has painted the original chaos, blurred, unclear, hazy, in which some clusters, perhaps of galaxies, are being formed; out of the darkness, the colours, still deprived of their shapes, and lights, still deprived of their direction, are emerging; all of that is liquid and resembling magma. And here, a thin straight line is appearing, together with concentric circles, delineated in a precise manner with the use of a pair of compasses and calculated accurately. Not only are they emerging from chaos, but they also order it in accordance with precise rules of mathematics.

Człowiek zawsze chyba będzie roztrząsał tajemnicę początku bytu. Problem ten oczywiście nieobcy jest też artystom. Marek Sak ujął go po malarsku, acz widać w jego „Przededniu stworzenia”, że zna różne poglądy na ten temat. Ten chociażby, że Stwórca jest mądrością a świat matematyką. Namalował przeto pierwotny chaos, nieostry, mgławicowy, w którym zawiązują się jakieś skupiska, może galaktyki, z ciemności wyłaniają się kolory jeszcze bez kształtów, światła bez kierunku, wszystko płynne, magmowe. I oto pojawia się cienka prosta linia i koncentryczne kręgi, wykreślone precyzyjnie cyrklem, obliczone dokładnie. Nie wyłaniają się z chaosu – one go dopiero uporządkują wedle ścisłych matematycznych reguł.

Another commonly known theory of the Big Bang refers to the beginning without indicating its Creator. It is what Antoni Wróblewski has painted, displaying the painting like the explosion of a bomb. The splashes of paints are spattering around, together with the stream of colours, the lumps of soil and stones – the authentic ones, because the artist paints with the use of real soil, kept in sallow ochre colours, whites and greys.

In this way he is paying homage to his native land, as much as by using it for painting, as by indicating that it is for him not only the native land, but even the beginning of the world. He is also indicating the Creator of the Big Bang; after all, spattering stones form the shape of the Cross.

Inna, powszechnie znana teoria Big Bangu, opowiada o początku bez wskazania jego twórcy. Właśnie ją namalował Antoni Wróblewski, pokazując obraz niczym wybuch bomby. W krąg rozpryskują się bryzgi farby, strugi kolorów, grudy ziemi i kamyki – autentyczne, bo artysta maluje prawdziwą ziemią, utrzymaną w ziemistych ugrach, bielach i szarościach. Malarz oddaje hołd swej rodzinnej ziemi tyle poprzez użycie jej do malowania, ile wskazując, że jest dla niego nie tylko ojczyzną ale wręcz początkiem świata. Wskazuje także sprawcę Wielkiego Wybuchu – wszak rozpryskujące się kamienie układają się w krzyż.

Antoni Wróblewski, Ziemią miechowską malowane, 73 x 115 cm, technika własna

Paweł Olchawa titled his painting “The eye of the cyclone”. What he has painted really resembles the eye… of a living creature, perhaps of a man. However, he looks at it in a different way. He has provided the eye with planes resembling the diaphragm of a photographic camera. The eye of the cyclone is something mysterious, if not for any other reasons, then because no one knows what is happening inside it, even though the results of its activity are known. The lens of a photographic camera may be equally dangerous and sinister, when – ubiquitous beyond the appropriate measure – it causes a cyclone. In the painting itself, the artist has suggested this analogy, contrasting casual, “natural” painting with delicate, somehow “technical” planes.

Paweł Olchawa zatytułował swój obraz „Oko cyklonu”. I namalował coś, co istotnie przypomina oko…żywego stworzenia, może człowieka. Malarz spojrzał jednak inaczej. Opatrzył owo oko płaszczyznami przypominającymi przesłonę obiektywu fotograficznego. Oko cyklonu jest czymś tajemniczym choćby dlatego, ze nikt nie wie co się dzieje w jego wnętrzu, chociaż znane są skutki jego działania. Obiektyw aparatu fotograficznego może być równie niebezpieczny i złowrogi, kiedy - nad miarę wszędobylski - wywołuje cyklon. W samym obrazie zaś artysta zasugerował tę analogię, kontrastując malowanie swobodne, „naturalne”, z gładkimi, jakby „technicznymi” płaszczyznami.

The areas surrounding Miechów are famous for ripe and large cabbage. Its heads give the local fields specific colours and texture. It is assuredly this set of colours that has enchanted Dorota Sak and made her paint “Rhythms of Charsznica”. This cheerful painting is covered by the regular leaves of cabbage, creating the decorative ornament in “fauve” colours. This painting resembles fabric which has been printed on, because the artist, apart from painting, is also engaged in the field of designing fabrics.

Okolice Miechowa słyną z dorodnej kapusty. Jej głowy nadają polom specyficzną kolorystykę i fakturę. Zapewne ona zachwyciła Dorotę Sak i skłoniła do namalowania obrazu „Rytmy Charsznickie”. Ten radosny obraz pokrywają regularnie liście kapusty, tworząc dekoracyjny ornament w „fowistycznych” barwach. Nie bez powodu przypomina drukowaną tkaninę albowiem artystka oprócz malarstwa zajmuje się również projektowaniem tkanin.

Dorota Sak, Rytmy Charsznickie, 140 x 100 cm, akryl, płótno

In his painting “The Peaks of the Tatra Mountains” displayed at the outdoor event in Miechów, Ryszard Kowalewski, a climber in the Alps and the Himalayas, recalls his experiences and thus shows his fascination with the mountains of Poland. The artist has painted mists spinning along the borders, enveloping the peaks and falling down into the valleys. The high mountains, thanks to their jagged forms, are exceptionally picturesque. The mists create unreal, fairy tale-like mood, easing the horror of the lofty walls. The painter has attempted to reflect the elusiveness of this phenomenon.

Finally, it is worth smiling, looking at the joke of Zbigniew Hołda: „You can touch, please do not sit down”, from the cycle: Pearls of Wooden Architecture of Region Małopolska”. The event of outdoor painting is a surprise. There are as many manners of perception, temperatures of experiencing feelings and techniques of painting as artists, and as many ambiences as artists, too. All of them create the ambience of Lesser Poland, which is the only one of its kind.

Witold Turdza Ryszard Kowalewski, alpinista i himalaista na miechowskim plenerze wspominał „Szczyty Tatr” dając tym wyraz swojej fascynacji polskimi górami. Artysta namalował mgły snujące się po graniach, otulające szczyty i opadające w doliny. Wysokie góry, dzięki postrzępionym formom, są wyjątkowo malownicze. Mgły tworzą nierealny, bajkowy nastrój, łagodząc grozę wyniosłych ścian. Malarz starał się oddać nieuchwytność tego zjawiska.

Na koniec warto się uśmiechnąć, oglądając żart Zbigniewa Hołdy „Można dotykać proszę nie siadać” z cyklu: „Perła Architektury Drewnianej Województwa Małopolskiego”. Malarski plener jest niespodzianką. Ilu artystów - tyle sposobów widzenia, temperatur odczuwania, technik malowania. Tyle klimatów. A wszystkie one tworzą jedyny w swoim rodzaju klimat małopolski.
