Hidden Account Numbers Worth $500 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two coop members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month.

The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached.

Patrick Grace, CEO You might be surprised to learn that a lot of people don't know the difference in a cooperative and an investor-owned business. Since October marks National Cooperative Month, allow me to highlight some of the ways OEC is unique.

First, a brief history lesson. Back in the 1930s, investor-owned utility companies refused to invest in electrifying rural America, believing they would never turn a profit by running power lines to farms and rural communities.

Farmers realized this and, with the assistance of the U.S. government, created their own electric utility companies called cooperatives.

All cooperatives — electric co-ops, credit unions, farmers co-ops, dairy co-ops, etc. — adhere to a set of seven core principles. These principles guide us and our member-elected board of directors to ensure business is done ethically and for the benefit of all members. We call them the Rochdale Principles, and they are: • Voluntary and Open Membership; • Democratic Member Control; • Members' Economic Participation; • Autonomy and Independence; • Education, Training and Information; • Cooperation Among Cooperatives; and • Concern for Community I would like to focus on three relevant principles OEC is practicing this month.

Members' Economic Participation means members invest in the co-op financially. In our case, members pay the co-op for the electric service they receive. It's important to know we do not have customers, but members. This distinction is demonstrated this month when we mail thousands of members capital credit checks —­ similar to dividends paid to shareholders of investorowned businesses. Our members are our shareholders. Any profit made above operating costs is returned to our members, not out-of-state shareholders with other interests.

OEC also demonstrated Cooperation Among Cooperatives in September when eight linemen traveled to Georgia to assist a sister co-op in restoring power following Hurricane Irma. Concern for Community was realized when over 30 employees volunteered their time to help nonprofits in our community.

I am proud of the employees and board, and the many ways we continually show what it means to be a cooperative.

OEC Foundation board grants over $22,000 to local families, nonprofits

T

he OEC Foundation, Inc. board of directors approved $22,111.80 at its Sept.

14 meeting. The funds will assist families and nonprofit organizations across OEC's service area via the Operation Round Up® program.

The board granted $9,000 to Meals on Wheels of Norman, Inc., which will help provide nutritious noon-time meals to the ill, disabled and senior members of the community. More than a meal delivery service, the daily visitation serves as a life-line to the frail of health and homebound seniors served by Meals on Wheels, which has been serving the Norman community for 45 years and has delivered 1.88 million meals.

The American Legion Post 176 in Tuttle received a $4,000 grant to help purchase and install new vinyl siding on its building. Blanchard Lions Special Olympics received $1,500 to use for entry fees, meals, uniforms and other costs associated with competing in the Special Olympics. A $1,050.90 grant purchased a prisoner transport cage for a Grady County Sheriff's Office patrol car.

In addition, several individuals and families received assistance with eye exams, glasses, dentures and handicap accessible bathroom improvements.

Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible by members who choose to round up their electric bills each month.

EC’s board of trustees has authorized the distribution of over $2.6 million in capital credits to members of the cooperative who purchased electricity during parts of 2007.

More than 18,000 current members and 7,000 former members are set to receive a check when they are mailed later this month.

Capital credits are somewhat similar to the dividends paid to shareholders of investor-owned utilities, except the co-op’s “shareholders” are the members it serves, and the “dividends” are the capital credits. It's one of the things that makes the cooperative business unique.

Despite a diligent effort to notify former co-op members, there are more than 800 who still need to update their addresses in order to receive their capital credits. Please visit www.okcoop.org/capitalcredits and, if you see a name you recognize on the list who could’ve been an OEC member during 2007, please have that person submit the online form and any accompanying documents. All address updates must be received in writing.

If you see the name of a family member who is deceased and you are the rightful heir, you can download the form from www.okcoop.org/ capitalcredits and return it along with the appropriate paperwork to transfer all remaining capital credits into your name.

The average capital credit refund will be $45. Checks will not be issued for less than $25 unless a member has no further refunds due for future years. Refunds of less than $25 are retained until and added to the next retirement.

OEC board of trustees approves $2.6 million in capital credits to be paid to members

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

OEC assists Georgia co-op following Hurricane Irma

O

EC sent eight linemen to Georgia Sept. 8 to assist with Hurricane Irma recovery efforts. OEC's crews, along with others from five additional Oklahoma co-ops, partnered with Excelsior EMC in Metter, Georgia (about 50 miles northwest of Savannah), to restore power to its members.

Within five days, Georgia EMCs (electric membership corporations) — with assistance from sister co-ops from 15 states — had restored service to nearly 550,000 members. [2817400601] Each of Georgia's 41 EMCs experienced damage and outages, a first for the state. More than 4,500 linemen participated in the statewide effort to rebuild power lines and replace poles and other equipment.

"OEC has on numerous occasions relied on the aid of our sister co-ops," said CEO Patrick Grace. "We are always happy to return the favor and help bring power back to other co-op members who need it to begin rebuilding their lives."

Fall rates in effect with October bills

C

hanging leaves and cooling temperatures signal the beginning of fall in Oklahoma. Here at OEC, a lower electric rate accompanies the shift in seasons — a welcome change after a typical Oklahoma summer. For members, it means lower bills due to a reduced price for electricity.

OEC's rate structure is designed to accurately reflect the wholesale power cost.

Generating electricity in the summer costs more money — hence, the higher summer onpeak rates. As the temperatures drop, so does the price of electricity.

"As opposed to our summer rates, when members pay a different price for electricity based on the time of day they use it, the fall rate is one price around the clock," said CEO Patrick Grace.

All kilowatt hours (kWh) on October bills cost 11.5252¢ per kWh, not including the monthly variable cost adjustment and service availability charge (SAC). Members opting to pre-pay are charged the same rate.

The shoulder rate applies to bills mailed in October and the even-lower winter rate applies to bills mailed November through April.

The first 1,000 kWhs on the winter rate cost 9.2752¢ per kWh and anything above 1,000 costs only 6¢ per kWh. The SAC was explained in depth in last month's Co-op News. It is a monthly investment that helps your co-op cover the expenses of maintaining the overall electrical system. A recent cost-of-service study revealed OEC's SAC should be close to $50 per month. OEC's Get Charged! electrifies students' minds

A

re you a teacher, parent or grandparent who would like to see electricity education taught in the classroom? OEC's Get Charged! hands-on educational program does just that while meeting state STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) requirements for classrooms and schools.

OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland has led the classroom program for two years and is gearing up for another year of educating the next generation about the importance and dangers of electricity.

“Get Charged! promotes the learning of electricity through science experiments,” said TedderLoffland. “The kids always have a great time. Plus, the material goes right along with their science curriculum and meets state science education requirements.”

The program can be tailored for a variety of audiences but is designed for third- through fifth-grade students. It includes electrical safety videos, projects and experiments focused on the components of electricity.

"As part of the most popular experiment, the students learn about circuits, conductors and insulators, and draw a schematic of the circuit they are tasked with constructing, which powers a small light bulb," said Tedder-Loffland. "Later, that circuit operates a telegraph the students use to communicate using Morse Code."

Tedder-Loffland visits several schools in OEC's service area each year to teach the program, which has earned rave reviews from teachers and administrators.

“My students were engaged and so excited to get to do some experimenting,” said Ashley Robertson, a Blanchard fourth grade teacher. “They were still talking about Morse Code on the last day of school. It was learning made memorable.”

Get Charged! includes more than just electricity education. It also involves learning a little history.

“No matter where I go, they think it’s so cool experiencing what was once a revolutionary form of communication,” said Tedder-Loffland.

Save the dates for upcoming youth leadership programs

O

EC's array of youth development and leadership programs is offered throughout the year to students in our seven-county service area. From elementary-aged students to high schoolers, we have educational and rewarding opportunities for everyone.

Our premier program. Youth Tour, is a seven-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for four high school juniors. The trip has been described as "the trip of a lifetime" by former participants and the 2018 contest kicks off in the coming months.

YouthPower Energy Camp, an action-packed, four-day co-op camp for eighth graders, will take place next spring. It takes place at Canyon Camp and Conference Center near Hinton, and nearly 100 other teens attend from across the state. There, the campers form and operate their own co-op while learning about the cooperative business model, participate in teambuilding activities and have a blast. OEC sends up to five students to Energy Camp each year.

The deadline for entries is April 1; More information will be announced in early 2018.

OEC's collection of youth programs also includes Leadership Summit, a one-day leadership seminar along with a $250 scholarship for high school students; Get Charged!, a hands-on educational program for upper elementary and middle school students; Do Watts Wise, an electrical safety program and live high voltage demo; Co-opoly, an interactive game that presents the idea and guiding principles of this democratic form of business known as a cooperative; and, new this year, Luck of the Draw scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a lucky member or member's child at the Annual Meeting and Member Appreciation Night who is or will be pursuing higher education.

hirty-two OEC employees teamed up with Little Blessings Early Childhood Center and Second Chance Animal Sanctuary during United Way of Norman's (UWN) Day of Caring (DOC). The annual service event brought together over 600 volunteers from businesses in Cleveland County. Over 30 nonprofit agencies in Norman, Moore, Little Axe and Noble benefitted from DOC, which kicked off UWN's annual fundraising campaign.

"I enjoy seeing so many members of our community come together to help out our often-struggling nonprofits complete tasks they might not be able to perform due to budget restraints," said OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland. "OEC's group was so large, we were able to meet the needs of two organizations.

OEC's two volunteer groups spent time laying sod, emptying a shed, upgrading a playground area, painting indoor dog runs and deep cleaning rooms, hauling off outdoor items, relocating pens and more. It was a busy day filled with rewarding work for deserving organizations.

Tedder-Loffland serves as co-chair of UWN's financial stability council and volunteers on UWN's DOC planning committee. CEO Patrick Grace serves on UWN's board of directors.

Harnsberger wins fundraiser shoot

EC's Key Accounts Manager Randy Harnsberger, an avid sport shooter and former U.S. Marine, claimed the first place prize at the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives (OAEC) Shoot for the Nations, a sporting clays fundraising event. Funds raised from the event benefitted the Oklahoma Energy Trails Foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 2016 to support international electrification projects. [7602100115] Shoot for the Nations raised $33,662 and will help fund an international electrification project in Guatemala this month.

OEC lineman Clint Mobley will join a group of Oklahoma co-op linemen on their journey to Guatemala to bring electricity to rural villages for the first time.

MAPLE SEASON STIR-FRY 1 cup long-grain white rice or 4 servings instant brown rice, cooked according to package directions 1 tbsp canola oil 3/4 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into strips 1 medium onion, sliced vertically 1 red bell pepper, sliced into thin strips 4 cloves garlic, minced

4 oz mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup tamari 1/4 cup sherry, apple juice or water 2 tbsp cornstarch 1/2 tsp ground ginger or 1 tsp grated fresh gingerroot Dash of cayenne pepper 1/4 cup unsalted, roasted cashews (optional)

In a medium saucepan, combine white rice and 2 cups water; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until all the liquid is absorbed. Keep the pan covered until ready to serve.

While rice is cooking, heat the oil in a large wok or nonstick skillet over high heat. Add the chicken strips and saute until chicken is opaque, about 5 minutes. Add onion, pepper, garlic and mushrooms, and stir-fry until crisp-tender, about 5 minutes.

Combine maple syrup, tamari, sherry, cornstarch, ginger and cayenne in a small bowl. Add to chicken and vegetables. Continue cooking and stirring until mixture thickens and develops a glaze, about 3 minutes. Stir in cashews and serve over rice.
