Hidden Account Numbers Worth $500 Each month, OEC will pay $50 to the two co-op members who locate their hidden account numbers inside the Co-op News that month. The hidden account numbers will be placed at random within the text of each issue and not on the mailing label. The amounts will simultaneously increase in $50 increments until one or both account numbers are located by their respective owners or until the maximum of $500 is reached.

1. One of the hidden account numbers must be your own.

2. You must advise OEC by phone, mail or in person at the co-op’s office by the 15th of the month.

In this column, I normally like to bring a positive message, or something informative; however, the prevailing thought of my mind right now is a heavy heart for one of our sister co-ops who recently lost a line worker to an electrical contact while on the job. All of our thoughts and prayers are with his family and Red River Valley as they recover from losing one of their own.

Electric line work consistently ranks in the top 10 among the most dangerous jobs, and it's why safety is OEC's single highest priority.

We want to do everything we can to make sure all of our line workers go home to their families at the end of the day.

OEC's board of trustees is committed to providing resources and training necessary to work as safely as possible. In fact, we are taking part in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association's Commitment to Zero Contacts and continue to set high safety goals.

The effort to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities due to electric contacts involves educating and engaging every single employee.

This is why we hold regular safety meetings for our line workers in addition to requiring safety training for those who do not work on the lines. We have the tools and ability to work safely, and it will continue to be the top priority at OEC. When your power goes out, it might seem like it takes longer than it should to restore it, but there are no shortcuts that can be taken to do work safely. I hope you understand during an extended outage why certain precautions have to be taken. Yes, our goal is to restore power to our members as quickly and safely as possible, which means we will take extra steps if needed to ensure our line workers are safe.

This is also a good reminder for those of you thinking about purchasing a generator to please have a licensed electrician hook it up to your home. I cannot overstate the importance of proper installation. If a line is down during a storm and our linemen are working on repairing it, an improperly installed generator being turned on could backfeed our lines, injuring the linemen or worse.

Please take care when handling electrical items, and know OEC is working hard to ensure the safety of both its employees and members.

ORU disbursements surpass $5 million

A

t its August meeting, the OEC Foundation approved over $20,000, making the total amount granted to organizations and families in OEC's service area greater than $5 million.

Created in 1993 as a way to give back to our communities, Operation Round Up® (ORU) has become a reliable source of funding for certain nonprofits across OEC's seven-county service area. From Meals on Wheels of Norman and Veterans Corner to Citizens Advisory Board and countless other organizations, the generosity of OEC's members reaches far and wide.

"I am constantly in awe of the willingness of OEC members to round up their electric bills for a great cause such as this," said Joyce Wallace, OEC Foundation board president. "This board is passionate about not only funding worthy causes but aligning itself with community partners who share our vision to help those around us."

About 80 percent of OEC's members elect to round up their bills each month, with the change — an average of $6 per year — being collected for the OEC Foundation board to disburse. Applicants ranging from nonprofit organizations to individuals and families apply for a variety of needs, and the board meets every six to eight weeks to review the applications and disburse funds.

"This board is comprised of community leaders who have volunteered their time to serve and ensure members' dollars are spent carefully and responsibly," said Tory Tedder-Loffland, OEC education and outreach coordinator. "Each board member takes great pride in the ability to serve their district in this way."

Over the last 25 years, ORU grants have helped nonprofit organizations provide meals, clothes, Christmas gifts and more to their clientele. Local charities are not the only ones that have enjoyed the much-needed grants received from ORU. Countless families and individuals have been approved for requests ranging from dental and vision needs to the construction of handicap accessible ramps, school clothes and supplies, and more. Over $5 million in needs met by OEC's membership. That's making a difference.

"Members are always welcome to go above and beyond their monthly contribution," said Tedder-Loffland. "The more funds we have to distribute throughout our service area, the more we can ensure our neighbors and friends are well cared for and have what they need to succeed."

These economic modes of transportation are becoming more popular, and OEC is rewarding members who are taking part.

"We are offering a half-price rate between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. for those with electric vehicles," said Daniel Lofland, energy efficiency and solutions specialist.

"In addition, those with a level 2 charging station installed in their home will receive a $450 rebate."

Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC), OEC's wholesale generation and transmission power provider, has an impressive renewable portfolio that includes wind, hydro and — recently added — solar. OEC's Solar Garden, located at Interstate 35 and Highway 77 in Norman, began producing power in February 2017, and Tuttle's 40-acre Solar Farm began operation in March 2017. As more solar facilities come online, expect to see it added to WFEC's generation report, increasing the already robust mix of renewable energy sources.

hirty-six OEC employees teamed up with Citizens Advisory Board and Food and Shelter, Inc. during United Way of Norman's (UWN) Day of Caring (DOC). The annual service event brought together over 600 volunteers from businesses in Cleveland County. Over 30 nonprofit agencies in Norman, Moore, Little Axe and Noble benefitted from DOC, which kicked off UWN's annual fundraising campaign.

"I enjoy seeing so many members of our community come together to help out our often-struggling nonprofits complete tasks they might not be able to perform due to budget restraints, staffing and the necessary time commitment," said OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland.

"OEC's group was so large, we were able to meet the needs of two organizations."

OEC's two volunteer groups spent time tearing down a wall, wiring a shed for electricity, cleaning cottages for homeless residents, constructing a wall in a warehouse, taking inventory and more. It was a busy day filled with rewarding work for deserving organizations.

Tedder-Loffland served as co-chair of UWN's DOC, and CEO Patrick Grace serves on UWN's board of directors.

A CO-OP MEMBER’S DIVIDENDS

Unlike investor-owned utility companies that strive to generate profits for shareholders, electric cooperatives like OEC operate on an at-cost basis.

Any profits made by OEC — referred to as margins — are returned to the consumermembers. Capital credits represent these dividends.

OEC board of trustees approves $5.3 million in capital credits to be paid to members

O

EC’s board of trustees has authorized the distribution of over $5.3 million in capital credits to members of the cooperative who purchased electricity during parts of 2008 — $1.6 million of which is being passed on by Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC, OEC's wholesale power provider) to those who were members from 1977 to 1987.

More than 20,400 current members and almost 3,900 former members are set to receive a capital credit check, which might have already arrived.

Capital credits are somewhat similar to the dividends paid to shareholders of investor-owned utilities, except the co-op’s “shareholders” are the members it serves, and the “dividends” are the capital credits. It is one of the things that makes the cooperative business unique. [413311702] Despite a diligent effort to notify former co-op members, there are more than 2,800 who still need to update their addresses in order to receive their capital credits. Please visit www.okcoop.org/capitalcredits and, if you see a name you recognize on the list who could’ve been an OEC member during 2008, please have that person submit the online form and any accompanying documents. All address updates must be received in writing.

If you see the name of a family member who is deceased and you are the rightful heir, you can download the form from www.okcoop.org/capitalcredits and return it along with the appropriate paperwork to transfer all remaining capital credits into your name.

The average capital credit refund will be $91. Checks will not be issued for less than $25 unless a member has no further refunds due for future years. Refunds of less than $25 are retained until and added to the next distribution.

OEC's Get Charged! electrifies students' minds

A

re you a teacher, parent or grandparent who would like to see electricity education taught in the classroom? OEC's Get Charged! hands-on educational program does just that while meeting state STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) requirements for classrooms and schools.

OEC Education and Outreach Coordinator Tory Tedder-Loffland has led the classroom program for three years and is gearing up for another year of educating the next generation about the importance and dangers of electricity.

“OEC's board of trustees truly values education and sees the importance of offering programs like Get Charged! which promotes the learning of electricity through science experiments,” said Tedder-Loffland.

“The kids always have a great time. Plus, the material goes right along with their science curriculum and meets state science education requirements.”

The program can be tailored for a variety of audiences but is designed for first- through fifth-grade students. It includes electrical safety videos, projects and experiments focused on the components of electricity.

"As part of the most popular experiment, the students learn about circuits, conductors and insulators, and draw a schematic of the circuit they are tasked with constructing, which powers a small light bulb," said Tedder-Loffland. "Later, that circuit operates a telegraph the students use to communicate using Morse Code."

Get Charged! includes more than just electricity education. It also involves learning a little history.

“No matter where I go, they think it’s so cool experiencing what was once a revolutionary form of communication,” said Tedder-Loffland.

Two OEC linemen begin journey to Guatemala

Fifteen co-op volunteer linemen departed the country on Sept. 16 for Guatemala. One of the team members was District Lineman Brad Scott.

Led by OEC’s own Derec Janaway, the team is on a mission to build power lines in two isolated villages – Pie de Cerro and Tierra Blanca Salinas – in the region of Ixcán near the Mexican border, providing first-time electricity to 100 families, two health centers, two elementary schools and five churches.

The project will consist of 130 poles in approximately 4.34 miles of primary line and 3.86 miles of secondary line. Most of the terrain will be flat, but about one mile of line will be built in dense rainforest surroundings. The homes will receive a minimum of four light bulbs, two light switches and electrical outlets.

The locals live in humble means without running water, food refrigeration, or the ability to use electric appliances for house chores or to aid in their economic growth. A local municipal utility, Empresa Municipal Rural de Electricidad (EMRE), based in Playa Grande, Ixcán, will maintain the power lines once they are built. The volunteers are scheduled to return to the United States on Oct. 4, 2018.

“Bringing electricity to remote areas in developing countries takes electric cooperatives back to their roots,” says OAEC General Manager Chris Meyers. “It reinforces our commitment to improve the quality of life for local communities at home and abroad.” [6631400102] Scott and Janaway join six others from Oklahoma and seven linemen from Colorado embarking on this life-changing experience. Janaway traveled to Bolivia in 2016 on Oklahoma’s first international project, and District Lineman Clint Mobley joined a team in Guatemala in 2017.

“We are proud to have two dedicated men on this mission, working hard to empower far-away communities,” said CEO Patrick Grace.

HOMEMADE APPLE CIDER 10 apples, quartered 3/4 cup white sugar

Place apples in a large stockpot and add enough water cover by at least 2 inches. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and allspice. Bring to a boil. Boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. Cover pot, reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours.

Strain apple mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. Discard solids. Drain cider again through a cheeseclothlined sieve. Refrigerate until cold.
