eptember is a funny month; simultaneously marking endings and new beginnings, its arrival brings both the close of summer and that “back to school” feeling, which is hard to shake no matter how old you are.

I, for one, am excited about what’s to come. A new season is always a time to do some chopping and changing at home, but it’s been a while since we’ve had the chance to cosy up our interiors not simply for ourselves, but for friends and family to enjoy too. The high street might currently be in crisis, but this exhibition offers a trip down memory lane – to when fashion retail led the way and Chelsea’s boutiques were the flamboyant and explosive epicentre of London Swinging Sixties cool. Immersive reincarnations of revolutionary shops – including Biba, Granny Takes A Trip and Hung On You – will feature décor, record covers, magazines, posters and over 60 rare garments that embody the bohemian and psychedelic styles of the day.

Discover how this rebellious counterculture was often inspired by a misty eyed nostalgic view of the past – riffing off Art Nouveau, William Morris, Victoriana and Regency dandies.

This "estate agency for Britain’s most marvellous historic homes" is likely to fare well as reverberations from the pandemic ripple through the housing market and, boosted by continued remote working, the urban-to-rural migration continues. A characterful companion to The Modern House, a 20th and 21st-century property specialist founded by former journalists Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd, Inigo turns house hunting (or snooping) for period homes into a noble and pleasurable pursuit. “We’ve been galvanised by the positive shift in attitudes towards colour, pattern and texture in fashion, interiors and the decorative arts,” says Gibberd. “It’s been interesting to watch how a new generation of surprisingly young designers and artists have adopted the English Country House Style and put their own spin on it. London Craft Week Looking to invest in something beautiful for your home? October sees London awash with covetable collectables. For contemporary and 20th-century design buffs the ever-sublime PAD London marquee pops up in leafy Berkeley Square from the 11th to 17th, with over 60 exhibitors including Gallery FUMI, Rose Uniacke and Dimore Gallery.

Plus, London Craft Week takes over er the capital between the 4th and 10th. Sue’s guide to the perfect cosy afternoon As the days get shorter and the mercury drops, OKA Co-Founder and Creative Director Sue Jones shares her tips for hunkering down in style

T

owards the end of the summer I think everyone starts wanting to hibernate a bit, especially after a busy and sociable one like we’ve just had. So those long, leisurely afternoons where you just have close friends over, and you don’t even have to catch up, you just want to indulge and relax together, become truly idyllic. I’m convinced that even the people who don’t want to give in to the autumn can’t resist them.

If you’re putting a date in the diary in advance, look at the forecast and try to pick a day where the weather looks truly terrible. You want your afternoon to be completely guilt-free, one where not even the dog wants to go for a walk, and everyone is feeling smug that they’re nestled indoors.

There’s nothing more mellow and welcoming than a roaring fire, so I always like to put cushions on the floor next to ours, so people can warm up as soon they step inside. Plus, they’re useful seats if anyone unexpected turns up; our door is always open, so this is a regular occurrence for us!

The most important thing is that everyone is warm and comfortable, so keep plenty of throws to hand – there are always blankets on our sofas so the dogs can come up too. If you’re a dog owner, you’ll understand that an afternoon without them isn’t quite as nice, so try and make it known that they’re welcome (or indeed, if they’re not). The sun is starting to go down earlier now, so mood lighting comes into its own. There’s nothing less relaxing than stark overhead lighting so think candles, candles, candles – they provide a lovely twinkly glow, which the season calls for. They’re flattering too; everything, and everyone, looks better by candlelight.

It’s all about indulging really, in the warmth and company, but also the food and drink, of course. I don’t tend to put out a big lunch spread for these kinds of occasions; it’s not what people are there for. But you do need to have plenty of things to nibble on. I’m not a chocolate fan, everyone is always shocked to hear, but that doesn’t mean we’re a chocolate-free house. I can always rustle up huge bowls of Maltesers and Quality Street – they’re everyone’s favourites to graze on.

For those that want to drink, give someone you trust with the cocktail cabinet the role of bartender – in our house it’s always my husband, Alex.

Something classic will never go amiss; it’s never too early, or late, for a Dry Martini or a Cosmopolitan.

T

he Kent countryside has long been synonymous with the tranquil gardens and commanding architecture of the quintessentially British stately home. This immense family house is amply packed with all the charm and character necessary to call to mind a bygone era of long days, and even longer nights, spent entertaining society’s finest: high ceilings detailed with intricate mouldings, flanked by huge, panelled windows, timeless materials underfoot – from polished wood to cool stone – and the most defining marker of all, a regal pillared entrance.

The vast scale of the property acted as the perfect stage for some of our grandest offerings. A huge extendable dining table, tall Grecian floor lamp and wall-filling clock look right at home here amid such striking features. But what truly makes this space are the little details; the layers of comfort and character that are intertwined. Drawing inspiration from the palette of the brocade curtains, seasonal shades of gold, soft green and warm red keep things sophisticated but welcoming – you’re invited to cosy up with velvet cushions, alpaca wool throws and ambient lighting. The finishing touch? Floral accents subtly weave each space together.

Classic city living comes of age in this west London townhouse

U

nderstated opulence is, by definition, a difficult concept to achieve, but this townhouse makes it look easy. With sleek, statement-making black wooden floors, nonchalantly offset by delicate grey-painted walls, the space exudes effortless elegance. In short, the perfect blank canvas for our new take on luxury: a grown-up aesthetic that’s as rooted in colour and texture as it is detail.

Much like its light-meets-dark backdrop, the refined palette is all about balance.

Rich charcoals are contrasted with silvery blue hues to ethereal effect, punctuated by mirrored accents alongside pops of 36

brass and gold, lending the look its low-key glamour. It could be cold, but layers of gently weathered wood and woven furniture, together with jute rugs, bring a little country warmth to the city – as with all sophisticated spaces, the magic is in the minutiae.

Everything has a place and there is a place for everything. Tactile velvet sofas in the sitting room are calling out for quiet nights in while the sociable set-up in the dining room – a round table and the most comfortable of chairs – demands quite the opposite: long leisurely evenings spent with family and friends.

A Seat of One’s Own

We put one of the custom-made sofas from our Tailored by OKA Collection in the hands of three expert interior designers.

The brief? Go as bold as you dare.

Imbuing a home with personality, while reflecting the character of their creator, is the forte of our made-to-order Tailored

by OKA sofas. Choosing curved arms in blue velvet says one thing, a square silhouette in green linen another. This subtle intonation is something interior designers live by, so we were thrilled to present a talented trio – Gavin Houghton, Jessica Buckley and Lucy Barlow – with the same blank canvas on which to make their mark: our Egerton Loveseat. “We offer all our Trade and Interior Design clients the opportunity

to use their own fabric when designing Tailored pieces, but it’s the first time we’ve done a project like this,” says OKA Head of Trade Sebnem Barker. “We were so excited to see what the designers came up with, and the results are better than we could ever have dreamed.”

These bespoke pieces will be available to view in our Chelsea store soon before going up for auction, with all proceeds going to our charitable partner the Trussell Trust. So if you fall for one (or two, or three) sign up to our mailing list and keep an eye out for updates.

“The loveseat, for me, wanted straight lines; it has a graphic shape” Gavin Houghton “It’s classically English, with a modern wit, and very eclectic – or so I’m told,” says Gavin Houghton of his interiors style, which he’s applied to clients’ homes since he launched his own practice more than a decade ago. With an aesthetic rooted in colour and pattern, naming his signature decorating hue as green, Houghton knew straight away which way to go with the loveseat. “I wanted to do something slightly contemporary; I love stripes and I knew it needed a bullion fringe – it was an easy decision,” he muses. He describes the upholstery, a Tissus d’Hélène ticking fabric, as “quite masculine but glamorous”, a sentiment that Barker shares: “He’s brought in a bit of grand country house style, with a touch of the quintessentially English gentleman,” she says.

“I like the dance between clashing elements,” explains Houghton, “putting a stripe next to a small print… then adding a big print.” This playful approach is evident in his own sitting room, which he had in mind when designing the loveseat. “It’s my favourite room, it’s been evolving for years, and I’ve added and added to it – all my prized pictures are in that room,” he tells us. A space where old meets new; geometrics and florals intersect harmoniously, and where you’ll also spy some of his own handcrafted ceramics. Houghton's passion for surface design resulted in a labour of love over lockdown that proved “quite serendipitous”, when he finally had the time to dedicate to throwing and painting pottery at the end of his garden.

“It’s an opportunity to make a statement, but it’s so liveable” Jessica Buckley Jessica Buckley, Founder of the eponymous interiors brand and Edinburgh-based homeware shop, shares our passion for curating homes that are comfortable, welcoming and accessible. “I love using colour and pattern, but never for the sake of it,” explains Buckley. “There are some pieces that are the stars of the show, and others that live harmoniously in the background.”

Upholstered using one of her favourite fabrics – a gentle block-printed paw-print linen by Soane Britain, that's based on acclaimed designer Lulu Lytle's personal collection of antique textiles – Buckley's loveseat certainly falls into the former category. “It’s such a beautiful fabric, but it’s not pompous; it’s soft and feminine, which is very in keeping with our house style,” muses Buckley. “The decorative skirt is the cherry on top, they’re becoming very en vogue,” she says.

“I don’t like everything to be too matchy-matchy; anything goes,” says Buckley of her design aesthetic. Testament to this is that the blue patterned loveseat looks right at home in this pink and green room of a previous project in north London. While it slots seamlessly into the scheme, the designer envisions the piece living at the end of a bed: “It’s so comfortable and the perfect size. Invariably clothes will be draped over it, but the idea of having a spot to sit and relax, as you might in a hotel, is so luxurious.”

“Everyone needs a bit of exoticism in their lives” Lucy Barlow “It’s really important that when you walk into a space, you get some sense of what the person who lives there is about,” says Lucy Barlow, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Barlow & Barlow, a practice that offers everything from design and architecture to lighting and landscaping. With a lifelong weakness for leopard print, which she puts down to her grandmother’s same fondness, and a decorating style that’s “a bit maximalist, but based in tradition, with a young twist,” Barlow’s loveseat couldn’t be a more perfect ideation of her design philosophy.

Many of Barlow’s projects call for custom-made upholstery.

“People are becoming more discerning, they want to put their own spin on things, which is why collections like Tailored are so brilliant,” she ponders. Upholstered in velvet Samburu fabric from Clarence House, her sofa comes complete with a unique “grass skirt” – or raffia trim – that is part of a collection Barlow & Barlow designed in collaboration with Jessica Light, the only passementerie maker in London to still be weaving trimmings today. “Trims can be quite traditional,” says Barlow, “but on this sofa it’s not at all: a trim for a new generation.”

A quirky piece, it's one that could happily “do the talking” in all kinds of interiors. “Leopard print is actually very classic; it’s been used throughout history as a symbol of wealth and travel – used sparingly it can look amazing,” says Barlow.

In her delicate and simple dishes, cook Emily Scott captures the essence of Cornwall.

Now, through her first cookbook, she’s sharing the secrets of her skill behind the stove.

Emily Scott

e enthusiastic. Enthusiasm moves the world,” writes Emily Scott in the introduction of her first cookbook, Sea & Shore. It is just one line in a hefty and beautiful tome; yet it is joyfully characteristic of the chef whose name has, in the past two years, become increasingly familiar on the UK food scene.

This is not to say she is new. On the contrary, Scott has been serving her simple, elegant, passionately produce-led cooking in Cornwall for more than 20 years.

Her more recent, more prominent successes – a cookbook, an eponymous restaurant in the famed Watergate Bay Hotel, cooking for the G7 summit earlier this year – are, she explains, a culmination of “cooking quietly and consistently throughout that time”.

Of course, being in Cornwall, Scott is not short of competition. Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth, Michael Caines and Nathan Outlaw are the best known of the many chefs in the vicinity, which currently boasts no less than 41 Michelin Stars. “It is very male dominated,” she acknowledges, “but I have made a name for myself here, and Nathan, Rick and Mitch [Tonks, in Dartmouth] have all been very supportive.”

After all, one of the most charming features of Cornwall is that it is a small, community-focused world.

To say that the area has influenced Scott’s food is almost so obvious as to not be worth stating. Her cookbook ripples with Cornwall: its fish and shellfish, of course, but also its bounty of berries, vegetables, flowers and herbs. “There is always a sense of place with my food – of place, and of memory,” she says. In her restaurant, this translates into “keeping it simple and stripping it back; using nice ingredients and not messing around too much”.

Though she was born in Sussex and spent most of early years between there and Provence, where her grandparents lived, she moved to Cornwall out of love – for the area, and for her first husband, a fisherman – aged just 23. She’s had three children there, numerous restaurants and pubs, and has – post an amicable divorce – found love again with winemaker Mark, who works with her in the business. Her food weaves together memories and experiences – of her children, her marriage and her childhood – with the produce of Cornwall and Provence. It is warmth, nostalgia, love and enthusiasm united on a plate.

Your cooking evokes powerful feelings of place and memory – how do you achieve this while using so few ingredients?

There is a lot of thought that goes into my dishes – and quality, seasonal ingredients. For example, I have wonderful memories of picking tomatoes as a child, so in my restaurant in summer I serve a panna cotta infused with basil, with tomatoes on top: a savoury take on the dessert, which still evokes that sense of place. My cooking style has evolved over the years, but I’ve always had a strong ethos. I’m not about foamy sauces and smears; I’m about bringing people together and creating memories.

You’ve been cooking for 20 years – why have you only recently put your name to your restaurant?

Maybe it’s an age thing, but at 45 I feel much more confident. I am happy to be in the limelight and get on with it. I’ve always been ambitious, but I never really stepped forward. I’m quite humble about what I do. I don’t think that’s a bad thing – I think the worrying is what makes me do a good job – but now lots of things are happening that are really good for me, and I know that’s because I’ve been working hard for a long time.

You took over St Tudy Inn as a single mother with three young children. How did you manage it?

The pub was one of the best things I’ve done, but it was also one of the most challenging and difficult. People feel like they own a pub. You’re having to please a great number of very different people. I rocked up on my own with three kids and a dog, and they must have looked at me and thought, what have we got here? I jumped in with both feet and tried to be everything to everyone – but in the end, I realised you just can’t be.

You refer to yourself as a cook rather than a chef – why is that?

I am very much a chef – but I can’t bear being labelled. I feel like “chef” evokes more of a butch, knife-wielding person, whereas “cook” is a nicer word: much more human and real. My cooking is chef-led – but for me cooking and hosting guests is not just about the food.

The wine is important. The laying of the table is important. The atmosphere is important. I think “cook” covers that sense of having someone want to nourish and look after you, whereas “chef” doesn’t do justice to the romance.

What inspired your first book, Sea & Shore?

As someone who has always doubted myself, I really wanted to inspire people. My book is very much about that. It’s about getting people to get to their local butchers, grocers and fishmongers, and to enjoy that produce. It’s saying, here’s a recipe, have a go and create something you feel proud of.

Sea & Shore by Emily Scott (Hardie Grant, £26)

An Autumn Soup with Pumpkin, Celeriac and Crispy Sage The soft and gentle flavours of autumn days – pumpkins, squashes and beetroot all bring a sense of excitement to my kitchen. This soup recipe is quick and simple and really champions autumn. I have also added the mighty celeriac – agreed, it’s not much of a looker, but I think it’s so versatile with a wonderful texture that sits in good company with the pumpkin. The deep orange colour of this soup will bring warmth and happiness to any table.

SERVES 4 6 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 1 litre (34 fl oz/4 cups) chicken or vegetable stock 500g (1 lb 2 oz) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded, cut into even-sized small cubes

Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the onion and cook for 5–10 minutes until soft and translucent but not brown (never rush an onion). Add the stock and bring to a simmer, then add the pumpkin and celeriac cubes and cook for 15–20 minutes until soft but still holding their shape. Add a good pinch of salt and a couple of twists of pepper.

8 sage leaves

Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and blitz until smooth. Heat the remaining 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a shallow frying pan (skillet) over a medium heat and gently fry the sage leaves until crisp. Pour the pumpkin soup back into the pan and warm through, then taste for seasoning.

Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Serve in your favourite bowls, topped with the crispy sage.

Porthilly Mussels, Leeks, Cider and Clotted Cream Drowned in cider and cream, what else is there? Porthilly Shellfish, based at Porthilly on the River Camel estuary, is a grower of mussels, oysters, clams and other seasonal produce from the estuary and coastline, including the ever-wonderful samphire (a seaweed-like vegetable, also known as glasswort, which is foraged at the muddy low tide).

SERVES 6 1kg (2 lb 4 oz) fresh live mussels (ideally Porthilly) 50g (2 oz) unsalted butter 1 medium shallot, finely chopped 1 medium leek, washed and finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely sliced 300ml (10 fl oz/1¼ cups) cider 4 tablespoons Cornish clotted cream 3 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Wash the mussels under cold running water and pull off and discard any wispy "beards" from the shells. Before cooking, you need to make sure all the mussels are alive, so discard any that have broken or cracked shells and any open ones that don’t close when tapped on a hard surface Melt the butter in a very large pan with a lid over a medium heat, add the shallot, leek and garlic and cook for 5 minutes. Pour in the cider, bring to the boil, then add the mussels. Cover and cook for 5–7 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally, until all the mussels have opened.

Discard any that are still closed after cooking.

Remove the mussels with a slotted spoon and divide among 6 warmed deep bowls. Return the pan to the heat, bring the cooking liquid to the boil and bubble for 2–3 minutes to reduce. Stir in the cream and parsley, then season the sauce and pour over the mussels.

Autumn Cavolo Nero Stew with Chipolatas One-pot suppers are a perfect way to feed your family at this time of year.

I love putting a casserole dish in the middle of the table – it immediately becomes a talking point and heightens the anticipation of sharing and eating together. I always think of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I cook this dish. This is definitely more luxurious than the cabbage soup that Charlie Bucket's family lived off, as I use cavolo nero, but a little goes a long way.

Cabbages are underrated and need to be celebrated, so *hooray* for cabbage stew – I promise you will love it.

SERVES 6 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 1 large white onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 18 chipolata sausages, cut in half 1 x 400g (14 oz) tin of chopped tomatoes 500ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) vegetable stock 1 cavolo nero or Savoy cabbage, shredded Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve: 250ml (81/2 fl oz/1 cup) crème fraîche 100g (31/2 oz) flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat, then add the onion and garlic and cook until softened. Add the sausages and cook until golden brown. Add the tomatoes and vegetable stock and season to taste with sea salt and black pepper.

Finally, add the cavolo nero or cabbage and simmer slowly, uncovered, over a very low heat for 2 hours.

To serve, spoon into bowls and finish with a spoonful of crème fraîche and a sprinkling of parsley. This tastes even better the day after cooking. I have also been known to grate cheese over the top and grill (broil) it – particularly satisfying on a very cold day.

Fennel and Parmesan Gratin Often misunderstood, fennel tends to divide people – you either love it or you hate it – but it always has a place in my kitchen. Comforting and delicious, this is a great recipe to try if you are not quite sure about this bulb. Tucked up here with butter, garlic and nutmeg, it offers a lighter dish to that of a potato gratin or one that has cream running through it, so give it a try. The delicate aniseed flavour is a perfect accompaniment to fish and chicken dishes, or it makes a quick and easy Sunday supper. To me, fennel is as good cooked as it is eaten raw (I think I have said that before!). I simply love it.

SERVES 4 4 large fennel bulbs, fronds trimmed and reserved 80g (3 oz) butter 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 whole nutmeg, for grating 50g (2 oz) Parmesan, grated 50g (2 oz/generous 1/2 cup) sourdough breadcrumbs Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 200ºC (180°C fan/400°F/Gas 6).

Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Trim the fennel, chopping off the bases and pulling away the thicker outer layers, then cut the bulbs into wedges.

Add to the pan and boil for about 5 minutes until tender. Drain well.

In a separate large pan, melt the butter with the garlic over a low heat. Remove from the heat, add the fennel wedges and stir until coated, then add the reserved fennel fronds and season with grated nutmeg, salt and pepper, to taste.

Transfer the fennel mixture to an ovenproof dish.

Stir the Parmesan and breadcrumbs together and sprinkle over the top. Bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes until golden.

Glazed Carrots Sweet and buttery, this is the classic way I always cook carrots. Sprigs of thyme and lemon zest always lift this humble side dish.

SERVES 4 8 carrots, peeled and sliced into rounds 1–2 tablespoons honey 50g (2 oz) unsalted butter 1 thyme sprig, leaves picked zest of 1 lemon Cornish sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Place the carrots in a saucepan with enough water to just cover them. Add the honey, butter and thyme and a pinch of sea salt.

Place over a medium heat and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes until tender.

Increase the heat and boil rapidly to reduce the remaining liquid to a sweet shiny glaze.

Just before serving, sprinkle over the lemon zest and season to taste.

Pain Perdu (Lost Bread) Pudding In my village of Blanot, we always used up the leftover baguettes to make this pudding. French bread is so good to use as the crust caramelises beautifully.

I think that I will always be very fond of vanilla-y soaked bread and caramelised crusts – they bring such joy and happiness to me. My eyes are bigger than my stomach, but I will always find room for that second helping.

Bread-and-butter pudding is the most unctuous and delicious of all nursery puddings. There are, of course, many variations; using brioche, hot cross buns, chocolate, booze, marmalade and fruits of the seasons. Here, I have kept it simple with a classic version.

SERVES 6 100g (31/2 oz) unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 1 baguette, thinly sliced 350ml (12 fl oz/11/2cups) full-fat (whole) milk 150ml (5 fl oz/scant ⅔ cup) double (heavy) cream 4 eggs 75g (21/2 oz/scant ⅓ cup) caster (superfine) sugar grated zest of 1 orange 2 teaspoons Demerara sugar 2 apples (I love russet apples), peeled and sliced vanilla ice cream or 250ml (81/2 fl oz/1 cup) single cream, to serve Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/350°F/Gas 4).

Lightly butter a deep 18 x 23 cm (7 x 9 in) baking dish.

Generously butter the baguette slices on one side.

Arrange the slices in the baking dish, butteredside up; these should be overlapping each other and standing almost upright.

Whisk together the milk, cream, eggs and sugar and pour the mixture all over the bread. Scatter the surface of the pudding with the grated orange zest, Demerara sugar and sliced apples, then bake on the top shelf of the oven for 35–40 minutes until it is puffy and golden and the top crust is crunchy.

Serve the pudding straight from the oven, either with vanilla ice cream or chilled pouring cream.

For Daisy Hoppen, Founder of luxury communications agency DH-PR, trips to the Balearic Island are a relaxed family affair As told to Kate Lough

y family has been visiting Mallorca for decades; my sisters and I all learnt to swim there as children. The first thing I do when I arrive is jump into the outdoor shower and then straight into the pool.

Our house is in Fornalutx, a mountainous part of the island with olive trees and windy roads. It still feels hidden away, with greenery everywhere and fields of orange trees. Houses here celebrate quite a pared-back style, with white-painted walls, exposed wooden beams and printed textiles. Floors are stone or tiled to keep cool in the hot summer, which means it can be freezing inside when we visit in winter.

Our house has an old feel, the walls are covered in paintings accumulated over the years and traditional hand-painted plates. It’s very relaxed, with lots of things that still don’t work or always break; but it smells and feels like home. Outside, my mum and sisters are always planning garden projects.

I make sure I pack a suitcase full of books and often get through one a day. In the morning, it’s always a debate as to who will head down the hill to the village to get local pastries, then the days are spent reading and swimming. We often head to Sóller, as the beach there tends to be less busy than Deià and we love that it’s so low-key. Patiki Beach has the best food in Sóller hands down, and the family who run it are so lovely.

In the evening, my favourite thing to do is go for a long walk as the sun goes down over the mountains, ending with a cool drink in the village square. Dinner is often at home with friends, sitting beneath the bougainvillea watching the sunset. If we do go out, La Rosa Vermutería in Palma is worth the drive; its croquettes are the best on the island. Or, if we are treating ourselves, it would be to a Campari soda and olives at La Residencia in Deià, then on to Sa Fonda where you will find everyone dancing ‘til late.

The local vegetables and fruit are incredible and we always make sure to visit certain shops and cooperatives. We stock up on olive oil, local cheese and look out for Ànima Negra ÀN wine, a red wine made in Mallorca that is delicious – especially with a couple of ice cubes in high summer.

There are also lots of artisan boutiques, and I always come home with beautiful woven baskets and the best wooden chopping boards, as well as espadrilles.

It’s still very much a family trip for me – and if we do bring friends, it’s our nearest and dearest only.”

The multitasking cook, food writer, author and podcaster tells us how she gets things done What does a typical working day for you involve?

No two days are the same as what I work on really varies; it could be planning a shoot, discussing a project with a brand, editing a video or recipe testing. I always aim to get up early – usually around 6-6:30am. Around three mornings a week I try to exercise, but first I meditate for 20 minutes and set an intention for the day – it helps me gain clarity and feel calm before everything kicks in.

How do you manage your time effectively?

I list everything I’m doing on a spreadsheet and update it with where I’m at, so I know my deadlines at a glance.

The nature of being freelance means that I say "yes" to everything and then figure it out after! Sometimes that involves working really late, but I feel so grateful to have work. On weekends, unless I am doing something worth sharing, I try to live in the moment and not be on my phone too much.

How has the past year impacted how the way you work?

I worked from home a lot pre-pandemic, so I have the same struggles as before. For me, it’s making sure that I schedule meetings and get out to meet with people.

I miss not having a second opinion or support from a team, so creating a network to bounce ideas off and chat with is really important.

What’s your coping strategy when something doesn’t quite go to plan?

A former boss, who gave me my first job in TV, once said: “You know, we’re not curing cancer, it will be alright”. I carry that perspective with me, even when a problem can feel so paramount. So long as no-one is going to be ill-affected, it will all be okay.

Where is your happy place to work from?

I mostly work downstairs while my husband works upstairs. I’m a sucker for sunshine though, so I follow the light around the house – by the afternoon I’ll be on the sofa and sometimes I go and sit on the stairs by him with my laptop, just for some company!

You worked in fashion before switching to food. What’s your advice for someone seeking a career change?
