“sOul” table Arch 600: Furniture Design Fall 2021
Professor Thomas Huang
When approaching designing a table based off of the word “soul” I was reminded of an allegory I heard in summer camp: “we all build our soul like we build a fire in the woods, and eventually you have to take that flame out into the world”. I felt that I could reflect this idea in the overall form of the table itself, using the bright sycamore at the center symbolizing the “soul built in the forest” and the walnut arms protruding from the center representing the path we all take bringing our soul into the world.

I didn’t take the easy approach in the construction of this table, the overall structure contains 28 total joints, featuring bridal, mortise and tenon, and lap joints. It was a time consuming and challenging project to say the least, but the satisfaction once I was finished is unmatched.
