IMT-GT WORKSHOP 2016

The workshop, which titled The Project Development Workshop of IMT-GT (Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle) University Network (UNINET) Strategic Action Plan 20162018, is the 3rd and the final workshop which was held in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The workshop was done due to maintain previous workshop which was conducted in Syiah Kuala University, Banda Aceh, and Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, in 2015.

In order to discuss and finalize the draft IMT-GT UNINET Strategic Action Plan, one and half day workshop, 1st - 2nd of August 2016, was conducted. Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng, the rector from Syiah Kuala University, gave opening speech and welcome remark in the workshop, stating that this workshop will realize the role of the IMT-GT UNINET, and support further achievement of its missions and objectives. imt-gt p11 .

ONE DAY WORKSHOP WITH UPSI

D

elegates from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Malaysia, held One Day Workshop on ‘How to Design and Develop Course’ at Syiah Kuala University, on August 4, 2016. The workshop was aimed for young lecturers of Syiah Kuala University, UIN Ar-Raniry, STKIP Bina Bangsa, Kopertis XIII Aceh and teachers in Aceh, as a part of UPSI-Unsyiah contribution of academic society and community.

The workshop, arranged by Office of International Affair and English Education Department FKIP of Syiah Kuala University in collaboration with AFI Foundation Banda Aceh, was held in three different places in one day.

The first workshop centers around the topic of ‘Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) took place at FKIP auditorium, with Assoc. Prof.

Dr. Maria Salih. As a keynote speaker, she shared her views about education field, and discussed about development of students achievement in PISA (Program International Student Assessment) test with numerous enthusiastic participants, to show evidence of education circumstance today. “In 21th century education, we need critical thinking, innovation, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. Nowadays students have become spoiled, and we have to teach them how to think, not what to think”, she stated.

Continuing where she left off, Dr. Wong Kung Teck gave presentation about ‘Intermediate SPSS For Researcher in Education’. The workshop took place at Laboratorium Dasar MIPA. The speaker give speech, also asked and trained participants on how to operate SPSS program in order to analyze quantitative data.

Another workshop focusing on ‘Action Research in Education For Early Childhood Education’ and presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Goh Swee Choo, mainly discussed about courses design and development. The workshop was situated at FKIP building.

SEMINAR OF HISTORICAL ACEH-KEDAH’S RELATION

A

seminar was held at Balai Senat Syiah Kuala University, Friday, 3 June 2016. Dr. Haji Wan Samsuddin bin Moh Yusof, as committee from association of PSMK (Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia-Kedah) Malaysia, and a colleague namely Dato Wira Dr. Hj. Afifuddin bin Hj. Umar, gave their views about Aceh-Kedah history to recall, re-discuss, and re-strengthen cooperation. Come from the association, 80 participants attended the seminar enthusiastically.

The seminar deeply discussed about historical Aceh-Kedah’s relation that was built at past especially in three areas; religion, economy, and politics which brought them to the bright era. Dr.Husaini Ibrahim, MA., a lecturer from Syiah Kuala University, also known as a famous historian that has been exploring the history of Aceh, stated that history can be investigated

by following footsteps and examining ancient things such as gravestone. Also, certain plant included as a proof of historical item. By collecting left evidences, they can give clues for researchers. However, in order to keep the clues and evidences which exist for long period, researchers must record their finds in book.

By conducting the seminar, hopefully Aceh historians, collaborated with association from PSMK Malaysia, can explore and learn deeply about Aceh-Kedah history.

Present during the seminar was vice rector, Dr.Ir. Alfiansyah Yulianur BC, vice chairman of Office of International Affairs (OIA), Dr. Miftahuddin, M.Si., and lecturers of History Department from Syiah Kuala University.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL

I

nternational food festival is an annual event that offers various foods from foreign countries. International food festival is “updated” name of Korean Food Festival, event that offers only Korean Food. The name changed because it was intended to cover more countries, since now many international collaborations already conducted for instance Malaysia, Turkey, Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and others.

For over 2 years Syiah Kuala University has celebrated international and cultural diversity with the annual international festival. As one of big running programs in the history of the university, the festival that features funs and games, cultural performances and exhibitions, education forum, cooking demo, plus a variety of ethnic foods, can make students and visitors try different taste of cuisines from various countries without leaving original country, Indonesia.

The theme for this year is “Celebrating Delicious and Furious Discoveries”. International students who study at the university joined the festival enthusiastically by opening food stand to promote their own traditional cuisines.

In this year, this festival was free and open for public. The festival activities began at 09.00 am - 05.00 pm, on May 2nd - 3rd 2016, and conducted at Dayan Dawood canteen, Syiah Kuala University.

The festival which successfully attracted students from various universities at Banda Aceh was organized by Office of International Affairs (OIA), Syiah Kuala University, also supported by some sponsors and media partners.

By holding this kind of international and annual event hopefully it can educate, share, inform, and enhance more global cooperation that has been formed by Syiah Kuala University with foreign countries.

FU JEN UNIVERSITY SUMMER CAMP 2016

W

ithin 3 weeks, from 26 July to 15 August 2016, twelve students and professor, namely Dr. Leemen, from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taiwan, run a project with framework of Summer Camp Program.

The students run the program by visiting some various places and tourist attractions. They visited some entrepreneurship places at Aceh Besar, field of rice or agriculture at Desa Teladan Lembah Selawah and Saree school to hold workshop which theme was mainly about agriculture, the way how to maintain age of plant and other programs that have done.

The students went to Gayo to explore coffee garden and Bener Meriah, Aceh, accompanied by volunteers of OIA. They also visited some tourist attractions in Takengon such as Laut Tawar, Pantan Terong, and opening of PERSONI event.

In Banda Aceh they visited an orphanage, Media Kasih, Setui, to motivate orphans and console them by bringing fun activities. However, in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, they did not

only gained new experiences on how to make Lontong and handicrafts made from bamboo and flannel, learnt Aceh traditional dance, visited Songket and Rattan entrepreneurship village, but they also enjoyed traditional culinary which is known as spicy and rich flavor, and visited Tsunami sites.

Moreover, the Fu Jen students spent time at Sabang island by visiting traditional cake factories.

This is the third time for them to hold Summer Camp Program in Syiah Kuala University, Aceh, Indonesia. Prof.

Leemen said that “It is a friendship between Aceh and Taiwan especially for the young generation. I think it is so wonderful for us to meet at this moment so we can talk and have a lot of dialogue. I hope this love can make the world be better and in peace “.

In addition, the chairman and deputies of Office of International Affairs (OIA) Syiah Kuala University, Dr. Muzailin Affan M.Sc., Dr. Miftahuddin, M.Si, and Dalila Husna Yunardi, B.Sc, M.Sc. warmly welcomed the professor and students.

MoU WITH UNIVERSITY OF NATIONS JEJU KOREA

O

n May 2nd 2016, delegation from University of Nations (UofN) Jeju, Korea, consists of President-Chairman namely Mr. Chang Hoon Lee, Executive Director, Korean Cultural Center & Board of Trustees namely Prof. Sung Kyu Kim, Chief of Planning and Cooperation, namely Mr. Byung Kook Jeon, and Director-Artist, Korean Cultural Center, Unsyiah, namely Ms. Jhung Hee Lee, met rector of Syiah Kuala University, Prof.

Dr. Ir. Syamsul Rizal M.Eng., accompanied by vice rector, Dr. Nazamuddin SE, MA, and chairman of Office of International Affairs, Dr. Muzailin Affan M.Sc. The objective of the meeting was to support and discuss the conducted Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Syiah Kuala University and UofN.

Since this such of MoU was formed with UofN more than one, many global activities occurred especially at Syiah Kuala University.

Therefore, other international activities hopefully are going to be held at UofN Jeju Korea.

Further, on that occasion, the Korea delegation formed contribution by giving costumes of Taekwondo to Syiah Kuala University, especially Students Activity Unit of Taekwondo.

INDONESIA AND GERMANY COOPERATION

D

r. Jens Schuring, LL.M from German Embassy, delivered a public lecture in May 25th 2016, about cooperation between Indonesia and German.

He explained several important issues like German as a country, its season, environment, culture, food, institute or organization, football league, and so on. He further explained about his experiences of migration and continuity of study in various countries, and things he has learned while taking science study in a foreign country. The most important, he presented about improved cooperation between Indonesia and Germany, especially after Tsunami disaster at Aceh.

The cooperation shows well growth result for both countries.

With purpose to support further cooperation, German government offers scholarship program. The program may be great opportunities for students and lecturers in Indonesia, especially Aceh, to continue study in Germany, since they can do increase ability, make or create new friends and experiences, and face

cultural differences definitely at the country.

The public lecture was attended by the vice rector for academic affair, Dr. Hizir, the chairman of Office of International Affairs, Dr. Muzailin Affan, M.Sc, lectures, staffs, and students from Syiah Kuala University.

MEETING WITH UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB DELEGATION

T

hrough program of Erasmus Mundus (now becomes experts asia), Syiah Kuala University successfully expand its network, by transferring some students to follow offered exchange program. It was proven by the arrival of delegation from University of Zagreb on May 9 2016 at Syiah Kuala University. The Deputy Rector namely Vladimir Bermanec, and faculty directors from University of Zagreb; MislavJežić, TvrtkoJakovina, MirtraBaranović, DamirKalpić, JasnaHrenović, ZvonimirGuzović, and Vedran Slapničar, were welcomed warmly by vice rector of Syiah Kuala University, Nazamuddin, SE, MA., at Balai Senat Syiah Kuala University. Some faculty directors, Language Center director, Library director from Syiah Kuala University attended the meeting also.

In the meeting, both parties discussed about study dicipline areas for student and academic staff exchange program. The areas including pharmacy, science, economy,

engineering, computing, humanity, geology, and others. Definitely both parties hope they can build

bridge between them by forming formal agreement for further cooperation.

MOU

MoU BETWEEN SYIAH KUALA UNIVERSITY AND KUIM

M

oU (Memorandum of Understanding) is a formal bilateral or multilateral agreement between two or more parties. Since the purpose of it is to establish a framework for cooperation and coordination, this written agreement valid for some certain months or years.

On Monday, May 9 2016, rector of Syiah Kuala University had meeting with delegation from KUIM (Kolej Universiti Utara Malaya) Malaysia in order to hold MoU signing. The MoU signing covers terms such as encouraging exchange programs and development of bilateral programs for students between institutions of educational excellence in higher education, conducting seminar, workshop, training, franchising program in some certain areas like Islamic studies, Business studies, Law, Engineering, Teaching and Educational Science,

Social Science and Nursing, and carrying out any other forms of cooperation.

The Malaysia delegation consists of Prof.

Dr. Haji Mohd Taib Dota as vice-chancellor/ rector, Fazurah Mustaffa, chancellor staff, and Mohd Shafiq Mohd Maidin, as public relation staff.

For both sides, hopefully by conducting the MoU signing, it can promote both universities.

Also, students can improve their knowledge and obtain experiences at each host university enthusiastically.

VISITATION

PEMADAM VOLUNTEER FROM UMT

P

EMADAM, stands for Persatuan Mencegah Dadah Malaysia, is an anti-drug association that helps those strugglings with drug abuse, and run public lecture about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

A group of volunteers from the association is going to run academic and charity programs in Indonesia, especially Banda Aceh, for several days. One of the activities is visit Syiah Kuala University. During the visit, the group that covers 31 students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), accompanied by a staff namely Mohd Zulkifli Bin Abdul Aziz, had a great and pleasant discussion at Seminar Room of Unsyiah Library on 14 July 2016. The discussion was supposed to strengthen relationship between UMT and Unsyiah, especially Students Executive Board (BEM) from both sides, and sharing information about student activities and experiences.

The group would also run other activities on the next days, such as visiting orphanages at Ulee Kareng and Nurul Huda, historical places and Tsunami sites, etc.

The group arrived at Banda Aceh on 14 July and would return to Malaysia on 20 July 2016.

UniSZA VISITS SYIAH KUALA UNIVERSITY

T

he partnership between two universities; Syiah Kuala University and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), has been existed for one year ago exactly in August 2015. The partnership officially formed through signing of a memorandum of understanding which covers areas for instance student, academic staff, and publication exchange, joint research, scientific discussion, and so on. In other words, the ongoing partnership facilitates the university’s international reach which can strengthen existed cooperation.

UniSZA is one of public institutions of higher learning located in Terengganu, Malaysia.

On May 30th 2016, delegation from the university visited Syiah Kuala University. The delegation which consists of two officers namely Fauzan Anwar and Suhazlina, and 37 students from UniSZA met the vice rector, Dr. Nazamuddin SE, MA, and the chairman of Office of International Affairs, Dr. Muzailin Affan, M.Sc. at Balai Senat Syiah Kuala University.

According to the vice rector, Syiah Kuala University do supports this kind of visit, and he hopes it can be kept exist and give feedback.

Since this meeting discussed mostly about student issues, students from student organization which is called BEM (Badan Eksekutif Mahasiswa) also attended the meeting enthusiastically.

After the meeting, the delegation went to the Library of Syiah Kuala University. The chief of the library namely Dr. Taufik Abdul Gani welcomed the delegation warmly by touring and introducing them the library.

In the workshop, participants who come from various universities; Syiah Kuala University, Universitas Malikulsaleh, Universitas Sumatra Utara, Universitas Andalas, Universitas Riau, Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji, Universitas Lampung, Universitas Sriwijaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Prince of Songkhla University, and Thaksin University, delivered presentations. The presentations include some outputs of workshop key result area such as Economic Transformation, Social Transformation, Research & Innovation, and Green Development.

Organizing Committees that from Syiah Kuala University and Office of International Affairs, also CIMT (The Centre for IMT-GT Sub regional Cooperation) Secretariat fully took part in the workshop which was run successfully.

SCHOLARSHIP

SEMINAR OF ESIT TAIWAN AT SYIAH KUALA UNIVERSITY

T

aiwan Education Ministry, through The Elite Study in Taiwan (ESIT) Project, had an opportunity to visit Syiah Kuala University with purpose to hold a Seminar which was held at Library of Syiah Kuala University, June 1st 2016.

ESIT project is authorized by The Ministry of Education to provide service and create opportunities for higher education collaboration between Taiwan and greater internal community. The ESIT project acts as a platform for academic exchange and coordinated services for international talent mobility and cultivation. One of ESIT Projects is charged with is to serve as a bridge for international students who wish to benefit from the quality of the higher education system in Taiwan.

This seminar which was attended by the vice rector, Dr. Nazamuddin SE, MA., the chairman of Office of International Affairs (OIA), Dr. Muzailin Affan, M.Sc, OIA Staffs and volunteers, and university students, especially Syiah Kuala University students, presented speakers from Taiwan; Dr. Wan-Lee Cheng, as the project leader of ESIT, and Dr. PoTsang Huang, an assistant professor in Chung Yuan

Christian University, as a project director of ESIT.

This seminar was also presented three alumni who have finished their master program in Taiwan.

They shared anything information and experiences related to how to live and study in Taiwan.

By conducting this kind of scholarship seminar, many students will continue their study in Taiwan.

RESEARCH

WELCOMING INDONESIA-GERMANY JOINT RESEARCHER

I

n order to welcome warmly German delegation and research joint project, on Monday, 25/7/2016, Syiah Kuala University which was represented by deputies form Office of International Affairs (OIA); Dr.Ir.Rina Sriwati, M.Si, Dinaroe, SE., MBA, Ak.CA, and Dalila Husna Yunardi, B.Sc., M.Sc., met the researchers. The meeting took place at 3rd floor, KPA 2 room, Biro Rektor Unsyiah building, where the researchers gave a brief overview about the research.

The research which titled “Evaluation of Safe Childbirth WHO Implementation Impact toward Service Quality and Childbirth on Public Health Facility� is going to be conducted at Indonesia, Aceh. The joint research project consists of researchers from Indonesia, Syiah Kuala University and Germany, Georg-August University; Samadi, Ichsan, Farah Diba, Sebatian Vollmer, Katharina Richert, and Lennart Kaplan.

ELEPHANT RESEARCH

Dr. Gaius Wilson is Elephant Project Consultant from Bournemouth University.

He is a passionate and committed biologist with a PhD in Conservation Biology.

He graduated with a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, and finished Bachelor and Master degree in India. He came to Aceh, Indonesia, in 2016 to begin an elephant research.

The research is focusing on identifying Sumatran elephant habitat requirements in three dimensions to provide tools for minimizing human elephant conflict and maximizing essential elephant habitats.

The research establishes a first reliable estimate of the elephant population size and structure, and composition of the herds in relation to general vegetation type in Leuser Ecosystem, Aceh, trough density transects for counting and measuring dung and sightings.
