I have never been to sure what I wanted to do with my life. And I have always been extremly open minded to every new thing I try, so of course when a friend of mine suggested journalism class at our school, I was more than excited to try my hand at reporting and photography. I had already developed a love for being behind the camera, (as long as I was not in front of it) and was gifted a Nikon coolpix for Christmas, so I signed up for Mr. Pungs journalism class.

Now being in here for two years straight I can proudly say I have learned so much and enjoyed the ups and downs of this experience.

It has openend many great doors for me, like photoshoots for important events and people, and an idea into how to cover news going on around me. We also created the yearbook, which was a huge success this year.

I have enjoyed my time in here and all I have learned as it is just the begginging of my life in the journalism field.

Reflections

In the beginning of the year, I decided that I wanted to strive to become more known with my photography, I wanted people to ask for me when they wanted pictures done, and while I am only a High school student, I knew this would be difficult compared to some of the very well known photographers that are in my small town. So I began volunteering myself for a lot of 4-H events and banquets and taking my camera with me, snapping pictures along the way.

Before I knew it, people were asking me to take pictures of their children with their 4-H animals, and even a few senior pictures. I did not charge much as I just wanted my name to become known.

Recently, I went to the OHS class of 1964 reunion and took pictures, I had a lot of fun and learned so much, the lady that hired me said she would keep my name for future events to take pictures at. My goal of begging my career in photography has begun.

My role in this class in the beginning of the year was the editor of the Purple&Gold newspaper, our schools very own paper that comes out weekly.

As the year progressed though, that role was handed off to underclassmen, and I became in charge of the Academics section in the yearbook.

This section required a lot of time, cobbing (cutting people out of pictures and placing them on another background), and spell checking. I enjoyed my time as head of Academics section.

It required a lot of interviewing and writing, but in the end it was worth it.

This year has had a lot of ups and downs for me. It was really frustrating, and at points I seriously wanted to give up and go home, quit the class and find something less stressful to do with my life. But I didnt, because I am no quitter.

Instead, I found motivation, and changed my attitude. I focused hard on learning new skills like cobbing, and paragraph styles. I asked a lot of questions and sat next to people who could help me instead of my old friends. By the end of the year I was ahead of the rest of the class. I got my Academics section done, and I started this portfolio way before the rest of my classmates.

Im proud of myself for my determination and look forward to next year.

Most of the portfolios around me are going to say that each student is most proud their section in this years yearbook, and the yearbook itself. In my portfolio however, that will not be the case. Because I am most proud of myself, and my determination to try new things and strive for success in this class, even when I wanted to quit. I did not give up, and I am now ahead of my classmates in my work. I have had a few of my own paying photo shoots, and people like my work and ask for me when they need pictures taken. I am most proud of me.

Every Mom gets a card, maybe breakfast in bed, and then they go right back to being, well our Moms. This year calls for change, as the end of our school year is ending and we all take a step towards graduation. If you think you will be hysterical, imagine how the woman that raised you will feel seeing you in that cap and gown. So why no start doing something unique that pertains to her interests this year?

Instead of breakfast in bed, breakfast with the whole family.

Forget that sappy, emotional card, and take some nice family photos of you and your siblings. Get creative as this year!

On Thursday, May 22nd all seniors being awarded their scholarships will attend Scholarship night in the auditorium at 6:00 p.m. This will be a night of tearful thank you’s as soon to be graduates realize how close they are to graduation.

Coming up Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. is the Bands spring concert, and members are super excited to show everyone their talents. The band has been practicing a number of songs vigorously in order to portray their amazing skills behind their instruments. Junior Kayla Smith states “I am really excited for myself and my fellow band members to be showing everyone

our talents, we have been working really hard, and I think some of the songs we are going to play will really surprise people, one in particular.” Yes, the bands list of songs for the night is an interesting mix, including the famous Star wars theme song.

Succeeding and achieving are two important goals set in the minds of every child as they grow and expand their minds. For AVID and Gifted students, these goals spark imagination and creativity as they advance in their schoolwork and work toward making their future a successful one. Both AVID and Gifted students work hard at what they do in class and focus on every subject they’re studying. They strive to find the answers, using every research tactic they know and have fun with what they’re learning during projects like making “goal chains”, to express their goals ahead of them they want to accomplish. These students know how to push themselves in all the right directions and are able to reach their goals with the skills they obtain while being a part of the program. They are headed in the right direction towards a bright future and know what it takes to reach their goals. They truly strive for success and being the best they can be.

Every child wants to be something when they get older. No matter your choice in profession, without the proper skills getting to the point of actually starting a career is going to be difficult. This is where Career Technical Education (CTE) classes comes in. These classes prepare you for your future. Whether you’re out working cows for Mr. McWaters in Agriculture, or learning about a future in Microsoft with Mr. Adler in Introduction to Technology, the choice of your CTE class can help determine your future. It will also help you achieve the goals you set in learning the skills needed for your dream job. It is said if you love what you do, you’ll never have to work a day in your life, and the learning will never end. You can never start learning about something you want to do forever too early.

Getting that headstart in learning about it in high school, with hard work, can be beyond beneficiary to any student.

Having a creative mind is desired and always has been for as long as learning has been available to anybody. Having the skills to be creative does not take much more than having fun with learning. This includes having a love for school and everything it has to offer. It means coming for more than just hanging out with friends, making mischief, and joking with teachers. Fine Arts

As we walk through the bottom half of our only two story building, glass display cases exhibit beautifully done pieces of art our very own students have created. It is easy to see that our peers have been gifted in the art division of characteristics. Painting and drawing are not the only “artsy” classes available though, as some can find what makes their creative juices flow in Music theory, Drama, and Band. Band has definitely struck talent as they have placed highly in many competitions they attended this year, becoming one of the best on this side of the continent. Hard work and determination drives all these students to do their best on all their art projects they begin; whether it is a painting, a concert, creating their own music, or acting on stage in front of grand crowds. Drama students are noted on their keen ability to remember lines, and show no fear as they perform. These classes allow us to excel and hold pride to our inner talents.

Foreign Languages

Why settle for less, when one can know more? Learning a second language is not just a helpful skill to have, it can also be an asset in some job opportunities and is required for some colleges. So why take only normal classes in high school, when we can take a foreign language as well? It is said that English is the hardest language to learn because so many words can mean the same thing, but to students taking foreign language, their classes are some of the most challenging subjects on their schedule.

Students focus on cognates, verbs, and the alphabet in Spanish one while Spanish two students go in depth with the foreign language. They learn sentence structure and how to better communicate with the language, pronounce things, and most of all, these students get to experience other cultures. Spanish is currently the only foreign language class held at our school, but there are many other languages like French, Latin, and Chinese available online. Students who want to expand their minds to new and challenging things might be interested in taking a foreign language class.

Language Arts

It started with our A, B, C’s and will continue throughout our education, as the English dictionary continues to expand. English classes help teach the importance of writing a response out, word by word, detail by detail. It may not be your favorite subject, but it is definitely one of the most important subjects in our students’ curriculum. In these classes we learn not only the importance of grammar and a wide variety of vocabulary, but also a little history of some of the most important written documents in time.

We learn things like sentence structure, grammar, and correct uses of punctuation; but most importantly we learn essential writing skills and different forms of literature that will help us in the future with things like resumes and letters. As we focus on famous writers, we are reminded of how every author has started out just like us and has let their struggles become their muses; showing us that we have the ability to be just like them: a poet, a writer, anything that was possible.

Math

One of the many struggles that students have to deal with is mathematics. Classes taken have ranged from Geometry, to Algebra, all the way up to college courses like Trigonometry and Statistics. Unlike past years, there has been an increase in online courses. Students who don’t take this subject online are able to experience hands-on teachings that benefit numerously; including fun lessons involving either toothpicks or white boards.

Even so, it’s evident that there hasn’t been any student who could say that it has been an easy ride. No matter how complicated it may get, taking this subject is fundamental; as how senior Tyler Russell would say it: “Math is the essential rearrangement, of useless numbers”. Aside from the hilarity, learning how to work with equations doesn’t just teach us how to find the right answers, it teaches us how to focus, think, and excel.

Math broadens our minds to greater lengths.

Learning to drive is a milestone in a person’s life, and is one of the most exciting times in every person’s life. Driving is an important task to understand as there are many risks involved with it. For this reason we are encouraged to take a year of Driver’s Ed before getting our license. This class helps students get their learner’s permit, and teaches us safe driving with all the rules of the road. You need to drive, and drive yourself to your full potential both on the road and sometimes even on the court. Physical Education pushes students to be active, and enjoy their time while doing it. Games like aerobic kickball gets students fired up about being active as they get to slide around in their socks, and try to hit their classmates with dodge balls.

So this one time... “...in P.E., I saw my teacher fall down on the gym floor, and when she fell, she farted so loud! It was really hilarious!”

Having honor is a respected quality. Having respect is an honorable quality. Having both makes a perfect example of a JROTC student. Not all of them may want to enter the services and fight for our country, but all of them understand the sacrifice of those who do. These students have will, a will to want to know what real respect is and how to earn it. They have a want to do good, and help others. These students work hard at everything they do; they know what it means to push yourself to the limit, and sometimes beyond that. JROTC teaches not only about the call of duty, but also about pushing yourself and achieving goals. Hours on end are spent perfecting the art of rifle tossing.

The performances and the stunts students put on capture the attention of their entire audience as they throw dummy guns high in the air, flip them, toss them, and catch them all within a few seconds. These students know determination, and how to achieve excellence.

Rabbits & Resources Imagine you’re running. Your feet carry you frantically across a field of green grass towards a small hole in the ground. You’re about to hop into the safety of the underground when you are caught by a fix. You were the prey, a rabbit.

An essential resource and key to the survival of predators like the foxes. The circle of life goes on around us daily as students in Ms. Darress’ environmental science class. In the beginning of the year, her students went outside for a lab, this labs purpose was to teach about resources and the survival of predators and prey. Students interacted as either a resource hoping to avoid a rabbit, or a rabbit hoping to not be caught by a fox.

Students were able to go outside and run, acting as the different animals in the lab. They interacted with each other and shared many laughs as they absorbed the material and subject of the game. The test scores after this lab were high and students remember what they did months after the activity happened.

For an experiment, sophomore Tristen Nemeth uses chemicals in Chemistry to create excited atoms, which changes the color of the fire.

Walking into these classrooms you will find safety goggles, lab coats, test tubes, hedgehogs, and lizards, we welcome you to science class. This class has everything, and teaches everything from the human body, to the sky above us. Students learn about the ocean and what’s inside it, and even about the world around us and how it functions.

In classrooms we find everything from lab tables and burners for testing things like a Fritos flammability and to harbor the dissections of fish, frogs, worms, and much more. In anatomy students focus from their brains to their toes. They learn about their bodies, and the development that happens with it, and also all things good and bad for it.

In Marine science, classrooms are filled with oysters for projects Then if you wander into biology you may learn a thing or two about photosynthesis, and how the earth revolves.

When it comes to the world and what it has to offer, Science full fills our needs to know more.

Our school has a history, as does the county in resides in, the state it lives in, and the country that started it all. Without them being discovered, where would we all be today?

Social Studies classes teach us all this, and more as we focus on historical events in our countries upcoming, and of those who helped

and did not help us achieve our

independence. The history classes offered to us come in a variety that includes World History, United States History, Economics, and Government. All of these classes fill our brains with important dates, battles, and events that helped shape things like states having their own forms of government. We also learn about financial topics like taxes and political parties. Social studies goes farther than just teaching about older times, and government, it taches us a way of life and how it came to be.

With sweat and determination covering their face, opponents face each other with a set goal of achieving enough points to defeat their rivals. As the game plays on, players cover the court with their pounding footsteps as they lunge, dive, and jump all in hopes of gaining victory because in a game of tennis, there is no backing down, only stepping up after the ball. It is you and the person across the court trying to beat you. There is no help in a singles round, and you must rely on your ally in a doubles match. These athletes give their all in every match whether they are battling their opponent alone, or it is a joint effort. Tennis takes an amount of skills as some of the moves these athletes make take such an amount of focus on their game, nothing in the background or on the sidelines matter. The only thing that matters is you, your racket, the ball, and your rival. This year, our tennis players set out to improve themselves and learn new skills.
