OCEAN HILLS COUNTRY CLUB HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES — SEPTEMBER 15 & 18, 2014 The Regular Monthly Meeting of the Ocean Hills Country Club Homeowners Association Board of Directors was held on September 15 & 18, 2014, at 4701 Leisure Village Way, Oceanside, California.

III. PRESIDENT’S REPORT President Takemoto apprised the membership as to the matters to be addressed, and items completed, as well as the Executive Sessions held since the last monthly Board Meeting.

The Annual Meeting of the Members was held on August 21, 2014 and was immediately followed by the Organizational Meeting. The Organizational Meeting was held electing the incumbent Board members Angela Takemoto as President, Don Lopez as Vice-President, Shirlee Sampsel as Secretary, David Hefler as Treasurer, and Board Directors Scott Goldwasser, Ira Landis, and Linda Strohm.

Association News held on August 22, 2014 for Board members to meet with affiliates of the PCM organization, Legal Counsel, and Universal Protection Service leadership teams.

Committee assignments were also confirmed for: the Citation Review Executive Committee members as David Hefler, Scott Goldwasser and Linda Strohm; Architectural Committee Liaison – Angela Takemoto; Audio/Visual Committee Liaison – David Hefler; Community Service Committee Liaison – Scott Goldwasser; Golf Course Committee Liaison – Don Lopez; Landscape Committee Liaison – Linda Strohm; and Marketing Committee Liaison – Ira Landis.

IV. MANAGEMENT REPORT In the Management Report, Becky Groenewold, General Manager, apprised the membership of the following: • Staff arranged for additional Audio/Visual training on the new sound board and the General Manager met with Laguna Woods Village Audio/Visual Staff to gain insight for OHCC’s program oversight and future development.

• The GM assisted the Integrated Management Program (IPM) Landscape Subcommittee arrange meetings with IPM Consultants Baker & Associates and Kelly Parkins.

• The GM and Staff investigation into solar power for the Clubhouse includes meetings with referred vendor Solare Energy and payback analysis received from homeowner Clair Lair. Information is being analyzed and will be presented to the Board for future review.

• The construction docs for the HOA Office and Shadowridge Entry areas landscape renovation designs were forwarded to O’Connell Landscape Maintenance for preliminary costs bids.

• The GM requested O’Connell Landscape Maintenance provide cost bid to complete the irrigation upgrades on Leisure Village Way. • The GM is following up with the City of Oceanside regarding status of the reclaimed water mandate.

• The GM confirmed Van Dyke Landscape Associates will present the Palm Court and Pool Deck renovation project Contractor bids for Master Board review at September Executive Meetings.

• Staff is working with the Swim Club to seek transportation for alternative swimming venues during the pool closure, and submit recommendation for Board consideration.

• Staff confirmed the pool lift is safe to use without the foot rest, which recently broke and was removed.

• The GM contacted Atlas Environmental Services for the annual tree assessment proposal to encompass all of

• The GM and Tom Hogan, Landscape Operations Director, discussed fire abatement areas with the Department of Fish & Game and City of Oceanside Fire Department representatives for clarification.

• Coffey Engineering was requested to provide a bid to mark the OHCC boundary lines in order not to encroach perimeter areas shared with SDG&E and Department of Fish and Game.

• The GM requested O’Connell Landscape Maintenance provide a bid to perform annual fire abatement in all areas.

• The new carpet purchase proposal for the Abravanel Hall renovation project is being presented to the Board for approval.

• Staff is investigating temporary structure options for use during the Abravanel Hall two (2) month closure period.

• The GM and Staff continue to pursue viable alternatives for storage of tables and chairs in Abravanel Hall.

• All Staff positions are currently filled.

• The Maintenance area restroom has been scheduled to be cleaned on a daily basis, by Staff with the assistance of O’Connell Landscape Maintenance Staff.

• The GM is working with a new PCM Supervisor to

obtain her Large Scale Manager Designation (LSM).

• The GM is encouraging Robyn Dawson to continue work towards her PCAM by obtaining her AMS (Association Management Specialist).

• The Council of Village Presidents (CVP) meeting held on September 11, 2014 was productive in sharing information. Andrew Martin of O’Connell Landscape Maintenance was introduced.

• The GM encourages residents to sign up for website email blast updates for project updates.

• The GM informed C.A.I. (Community Associations Institute) is recommending the Governor Veto current legislation AB1738 permitting homeowners to bring an attorney to dispute resolution.

• The GM referred to the Union Tribune article regarding the GM’s presentation at the C.A.I. Seminar in August, 2014.

• Notification was sent to homeowners regarding the upcoming Palm Court & Pool Deck, asphalt and Abravanel Hall major projects.

• Notification was sent to homeowners using the RV Lot regarding vehicle relocation during the asphalt work.

• Notification was sent to homeowners regarding the CC&R’s town hall meetings scheduled.

• The Board has been invited to several upcoming educational events and the Third Annual Water Volleyball match between Staff and Residents scheduled for September 19, 2014.

V. TREASURER’S REPORT Treasurer David Hefler gave the following Treasurer’s Report: At the close of August, 2014, we are in strong financial condition with net reserves of $4,449,806 and a year-to-date operating deficit of $31,773. Unanticipated income year-to-date variance as of August, 2014 include: $15,219 funds collected by the Collection Agency for Account #2340135 and $6,795 Transfer/Tenant Fees.

Below-budget year-to-date variances as of August, 2014 include: $14,070 Bulk Cable TV; $13,968 Recreation & Special Service payroll; $10,415 Fire Hazard Abatement; $10,080 Printing & Publishing; $9,328 Consulting Fees;

Vice President Lopez reported the first draft of CC&R’s revised documents have been distributed to the membership and encouraged members attend the scheduled workshop meetings. An additional after-hours workshop meeting will be scheduled for members who cannot attend the weekday meetings.

B. 30th Anniversary Committee – no report C. RV Lot Agreement – Rule Change Vice President Lopez advised the RV Club members have reviewed the documents and submitted their comments for RV Lot Agreement Committee consideration.

NEW BUSINESS A. Staff Recommendation — Transportation to Offsite Pool Location Staff provided information for alternative pool facilities that residents could consider using during the pool renovation project and is working with Swim Club representatives to survey membership for the top three destinations. Staff recommends the Board consider providing transportation to and from a sport facility,

Association News agreed upon by the members of the Swim Club and non-members, and provided transportation costs based on estimated two (2) half days a week during a four (4) month period and minimum 20 riders for the duration of the project.

Motion made and seconded (D. Hefler/D. Lopez) to table this until a specific transportation plan can be presented for Board consideration. Motion passed unanimously.

B. Staff Recommendation — Temporary Event Canopy Staff presented the more than 300+ number of activity hours that Abravanel Hall was used by residents in January and February of 2014 and recommended a temporary canopy be rented to accommodate events during the upcoming Abravanel Hall renovation project during January and February 2015. The recommended location for the temporary event canopy is in the Clubhouse front parking lot and the tent canopy size is a 40’ x 50’ canopy, creating a 2,000 square foot space, fully contained with sidewalls, a sliding door, windows, a subfloor, and heaters (propane not included). There was

discussion regarding the total number of residents and classes that could utilize the space, whether the space could accommodate the larger class venues, loss of parking spaces, blockades that would need to be installed for safety and then removed in case of emergencies, and additional costs required for electricity, heating and air conditioning and conflicts with construction during the pool renovation.

Motion made and seconded (I. Landis/L. Strohm) to take no action due to the cost and impracticality. Motion passed unanimously.

C. Homeowner Correspondence – Shadowridge Entry Long Term Pass There was discussion regarding homeowner correspondence suggesting long term passes be issued to non-residents for access through the Shadowridge entry gate. There were concerns discussed regarding the pass or transponder registration logistics and security verification ramifications.

D. General Manager Annual Certification The Board reviewed Annual Certification information for General Manager Becky Groenewold, which was provided by Professional Community Management (PCM) as required by California Business & Professions Code 11504.

E. October 13, 2014 – One Day Meeting President Takemoto notified the membership that the October Regular Session Board Meeting will be held one day only on October 13, 2014 and that there will not be any Staff or Committee reports presented.

VII. RECESS The meeting was recessed at 11:44 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 18, 2014.

SESSION II, Thursday, September 18, 2014 President Takemoto reconvened the Regular Board Meeting at 10:00 a.m. President Takemoto apprised the members that an Executive Session was held in the afternoon of September 15, 2014. The Board discussed third party contracts; disciplinary hearings; legal opinions; potential litigation; delinquencies review; Executive Committee reports; and approved prior Executive Session minutes. The third party contracts approved were to Coffey Engineering for surveying services to mark the OHCC Common area boundary lines, in an amount not to exceed $8,150; O’Connell Landscape Maintenance to perform annual fuel modification (fire abatement) work on all OHCC surrounding areas, in an amount not to exceed $39,250; O’Connell Landscape Maintenance to complete the irrigation sprinkler head conversions on Leisure Village Way, in an amount not to exceed $172,700. This anticipates rebates of $4 per

IX. STAFF REPORTS RECREATION – Chris Bessey, Recreation Director, reported on upcoming events being held in 2014: the Sailing Club 30th Anniversary Lunch on September 30th; the League of Women’s Voters Seminar on October 1st; tickets are available September 18th for the Tri-City Medical Center luncheon on October 17th; the Staff vs.

Residents Water Volleyball game on September 19th; the Annual Flea Market on September 27th; and the Open House Craft Fair on November 8th. Ms. Bessey also reported on transportation scheduled to Julian on September 29, 2014; flu shots administered by Walgreen’s on October 18, 2014; Staff kudos to Facilities Supervisor Ramon Vidrio for organizing the Maintenance Restroom daily cleaning schedule; there are no Staff openings; and there were 643 activities between July 26 and August 25, 2014.

Association News reported: the Asphalt Consultant scope of work specifications were sent out to bid and two out five vendors have submitted proposals to date; the Golf Casa concrete improvement work has been completed and a new air line for the golf shoe cleaning rack was installed; the thirteen new benches for Leisure Village Way have been installed; the repair work on the concrete brow ditches has begun; the wrought iron fencing repair work along Cyrus Village master common areas began September 22nd and they will be painted after the repairs are completed; the Master Common area walls in Mykonos will be painted; shade material for the top of the Dog Park structure has been installed and Staff is investigating local purchase sourcing for roll down shades on the western exposure side; the wood boxes containing the four (4) emergency phones on the Golf Course have deteriorated, and new water proof replacement boxes have been ordered; bids continue to be solicited for the replacement pool chlorine generator, and the pool water is being maintained by the backup chlorinator system; in order to be in compliance with drought restrictions, power washing bid requests have been sent out to power washing vendors licensed by the City of Oceanside for drought tolerant procedures; the Audio/Visual Committee members requested additional training on the new audio board and training has been scheduled in September; the costs for replacement and purchase of additional Golf Carts continues to be researched; Clubhouse Repairs and Maintenance is within budget, Pool Equipment Maintenance and Repairs is over budget due to the additional chemicals required for the backup chlorinator system to properly maintain the water, and Street Light Repairs is within budget; there were 97 work orders received and 80 have been completed.

LANDSCAPE –Tom Hogan, Landscape Operations Director reported: the Phase 3 Tree Trimming work on the Master trees has been completed; the Golf Course Architect evaluation of the bunkers for the Bunker Master Plan renovation recommendations is in process; the golf course entry concrete work has been completed;

the Pesticide use report for the month of August was sent to the Department of Agriculture and posted at the Clubhouse and on the website, and available at the HOA Office; the irrigation parts inventory is being maintained; Golf Course Operations were $15,177 over budget year-to-date due to water and chemicals, and Landscape Common Area Operations were $41,204 over budget year-to-date due to water and irrigation repairs, including several water main breaks.

X. COMMUNITY PATROL SERVICE REPORT Len Weinstein, Director of Community Patrol Services, reported for the month of August: the Emergency Monitoring System (EMS) testing program was completed on 10 homes, and year-to-date total systems tested is 1,435; Staff refresher training was conducted on the EMS basic reset functions to preclude need for vendor response when possible; the STOP sign violations issued were to vendors or visitors; parking violations remained constant at 14; there were 11 fire alarms, either kitchen smoke or system related, and 14 burglar/panic alarms, either system related or resident error.

XI. COMMITTEE REPORTS ARC — Chairperson Haroldson reported that the ARC Committee reviewed 48 new applications in August; 50 were approved, including four (4) that were previously tabled; none (0) was denied; and three (3) were tabled pending receipt of further information. There were no site visits.

Audio/Visual – Chairperson Bob Herrmann reported on the various performances and meetings in August supported by the members; several training sessions were held on the new digital sound board installed in the Abravanel Hall A/V booth; the third camera recently installed in the Mykonos Room is fully functional; the A/VC has been involved over the summer with pre-

Association News production activities supporting the Theatre Arts group for their October production; the Channel 12.1/865 network broadcast is running without reported problems; and some software updates have been recently made to improve program scheduling capabilities and post production editing.

Community SERVICES – Chairperson Eileen Miller reported the League of Women Voters Seminar will be held on October 1st; the Tri-City Medical Center presentation will be on October 17th; the Landscape Seminar will be held on November 1st; the proposed trophy cabinet purchase has been forwarded to the Social Club President for funding; Member Ann Mulvey is investigating recycling program options; and Member Frank Petronella is investigating a seminar regarding identity theft and credit card data breach.

Member Petronella encouraged the membership read the September Newsletter article regarding available transportation alternatives and related costs details.

GOLF COURSE – Vice President Lopez reported review of the bunkers has been completed and the report will be presented to the Committee and Master Board

in September; the Golf Casa entrance concrete work has been completed and new entrance signage installed; the Committee is recommending changes to the singlerider cart regulations and registration process and has submitted the recommendations to Staff for evaluation; and the Men’s #18 tee is being recommended for the annual tee renovation.

LANDSCAPE – On behalf of Chairperson Alma Sisco-Smith, Board Director Strohm reported the IPM Subcommittee continues to do their investigation and will be meeting with another IPM consultant; and the Landscape walkthroughs are very successful.

During the past several months, Tony Gillette met with Staff, Theatre Arts Club, CERT, the RV Club and General Manager Groenewold to determine the current needs and provide a feasible solution. ARC is recommending a section be added to the Handbook that addresses the ability to impose a recurring fine until the violation is corrected.

Audio/Visual Committee C.1. Abravanel Hall Stage Lighting The Audio/Visual Committee requested four additional LED light fixtures to adequately light the stage corners in Abravanel Hall. The light fixtures were recommended by Audio/Visual consultant Jake Henricksen of Morningstar Productions and Staff can install the fixtures at no additional cost.

Golf Course Committee D.1. Golf Course Annual Tee Maintenance Every year, OHCC renovates two to three Golf Course tees. The Golf Course Committee is recommending that the Men’s 18th tee be renovated.

The Landscape Committee performed inspections of trees that have been requested by homeowners to be removed or trimmed: on August 7, 2014 a total of four (4) trees were inspected at four (4) locations. The Landscape Committee determined there were 3 trees requiring trimming, and one (1) required no action. The tree that required no action did not meet the criteria for removal.

I want to start this message out with heartfelt gratitude! I appreciate all the work the Board has done over the last two years to bring the pool project to fruition!

The work will begin in just a few short days-NOVEMBER 10, 2014. When summer rolls around I hope everyone will be able to forget about all the construction trauma we have endured and enjoy the beautiful new facilities. You know how OHCC loves a good party and I see a “Glad It’s Done” party in our future!

I also want to thank the Staff for all of their efforts in coordinating the myriad of projects under way in addition to their normal day to day job duties. The asphalt work has taken on new dimensions as we tackle the RV Lot and the overflow and Clubhouse lots. The work will be finished by mid-November weather permitting. I want to thank all of the Volunteers who have also put in countless hours to help coordinate this process from RV relocation to street monitoring! The Staff, as always, has risen to the occasion to make every effort to get responses back to folks with questions and concerns.

I will encourage you once again to PLEASE register for the website if you have not done so. Go to oceanhillscountryclub.com and follow the simple steps to connect. This tool will enable us to communicate sudden schedule changes quickly to everyone. I know there are some residents without computers. But, if you own a computer, please take a minute to do this now.

Starting on November 10, Contractors Good and Roberts will be on site to begin work on the pool and palm court renovation and trenching around the Clubhouse.

The first sign of work will be the installation of construction fencing and demolition will begin shortly thereafter. The fence will encompass all of the walkway areas up to the Clubhouse, so pedestrians and cars will need to share the driveway. A pedestrian access will be created.

The only access to the building will be through the main front doors. This means the parking at the front portico will not be possible. We may have to designate a parking space for short drop offs. Bear with us while we manage this.

Golf cart parking will be impacted as the path for construction traffic will be on the left side of the building.

The EXIT driveway near the mail box will be closed to ALL traffic. Signage will be posted to help direct you.

All vehicular traffic will be routed in and out of the main driveway by the tennis courts. Golf cart access to the golf course will be re-routed once the fence is in place for the duration of the construction, because of a concern about golf carts having to cross through the construc-

tion traffic area. Foot traffic onto the golf course will run right next to the existing golf cart path to the left of the Clubhouse. A construction fence and signage will be in place to guide the pedestrian access onto the golf course.

PLEASE practice patience and an abundance of caution when you come and go from the Clubhouse until all the new pathways are established and you are familiar with their location.

There will be a great deal of construction traffic throughout the duration of the work. Bear this in mind when you are traveling past the Clubhouse and make sure to stop at the STOP signs and watch for the trucks that will be entering and exiting the Clubhouse area. After the fencing is up, demolition will begin. ALL INTERIOR DOORS LEADING TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE CLUBHOUSE IN ALL AREAS WILL BE TAPED OFF. NO ACCESS OUT TO THE SIDE AND REAR WILL BE PERMITTED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE CLUBHOUSE. Only in the event of a major emergency, such as fire, will access be allowed to the outside of the building.

We will be moving all of the pool furniture into the pickle ball court closest to the building as the pool deck must be cleared prior to the demolition. This will save the Association money on storage and allow access to some of the items that need to be relocated away from the building while construction is underway. A gate will be added to the far court so there can be access from outside the

Association News construction area. This project is going to take several months to complete and changes will be communicated to you as they come. The demo, trenching, piping, grading etc. will take up the large portion of the next few months.

All of the underground work will need to be completed before new concrete goes in and finally, the landscaping will be completed. There will be regular meetings with the Contractor and Staff so we can relay changes to the residents!

Tom Hogan continues to work with O’Connell to address irrigation upgrades to Leisure Village Way and obtaining rebates for the work. Tree assessment has begun with our Registered, Consulting Arborist, Ron Matranga of Atlas Environmental Services. Ron will also be working with us to help protect and relocate some of the trees around the Clubhouse during the construction. Tom is also busy getting the golf tee renovation done that was approved by the Board as well as working with O’Connell to address the crabgrass issue on the course. In November through January, the fuel abatement will be performed under Tom’s watchful eye. This timeframe is critical to protect the wildlife in the area adjacent to the community in the native habitat. We continue to ask everyone to inspect their rear yard irrigation and adhere to the three day a week water schedule. Water in the curbs is most often a result of this rear yard overwatering.

ELECTRIC

Chris Bessey and her Staff have done a wonderful job keeping the Clubhouse humming and overseeing the additional tasks of the 30th Anniversary events. It has been a fun-filled year and the final event will take place on November 8th. I hope everyone will turn out to support this event and give a heartfelt round of thanks to all the volunteers, vendors and Staff who poured themselves into the activities to celebrate this huge milestone in our community!

I want to thank the members of the water volleyball team who invited us once again into the pool! Staff managed to actually win one match and everyone enjoyed the fun! Staff is also working with the vendor to resolve some of the issues regarding the pool tables in the billiards room! Overall, the message I hear is they are a welcomed and greatly enjoyed upgrade from what we had. We appreciate the continued efforts of our vendor to address the ongoing concerns.

The first bit of news is about the plans for the pool deck and palm court repair. The contract was finalized in late September, and since then we have been working with Good & Roberts to firm up the schedule and the logistics planning.

As it stands now, the work will begin on November 10, and will end sometime in May. In terms of logistics, the whole Clubhouse area, including the pool and spa area, the Palm Court, and the perimeter of the Clubhouse, will become one big construction zone! The only entry and exit to the Clubhouse will be via the front doors. All other doors will be marked as emergency exit only. A temporary fence will be installed around the outside perim-

eter of the work area. Please comply with all signs and notices. This is for your safety! Ongoing updates will be provided in the newsletter, on the in-house broadcast channel and on the website. Please check the latter two frequently for the most current updates. The other news is related to the reclaimed water project. On October 2, the Association received formal notice from the City of Oceanside that they are intending to provide reclaimed water to OHCC, and that we are required to convert to reclaimed water on landscaped areas. At a meeting with a representative from the City, we were informed that the expected date for delivery of reclaimed water to our Cannon Road entry is toward the end of 2016 or early 2017.

We will be addressing the preliminary planning for the effort in our upcoming budget process.

The following actions were taken during the regular October Board meeting: We approved the consent calendar item, consisting of three items: approval of last month’s meeting minutes, ratification of expenses related to emergency repairs to the spa heater at a cost of $4,200, and approval to purchase 12 new six-foot tables and two carts. The total cost is $5,100. These tables will replace existing damaged tables and are needed for the busy Holiday season.

Association News the pool is closed. The current Tuesday and Thursday bus schedule will be modified to allow drop-off and pick-up at Tri-City Wellness Center and PureFitness in Carlsbad.

We approved a recommendation from the Audio/Visual Committee regarding purchase of A/V equipment from a homeowner, for a total amount of $600, and approved another recommendation asking the Board to consider assigning a permanent staff position to oversee the A/V activities. Staff will provide further research and bring it to the November Board meeting and this will be considered as part of the budgeting process with regards to staffing and level of service.

Next we approved two recommendations from the Landscape Committee—one regarding homeowner requests for tree pruning or removal, and another requesting funding for a meeting with Van Dyke to discuss turf removal options that offer rebates to offset the cost.

The funding was approved in an amount not to exceed $800.00.

The Board discussed some of the complex logistics surrounding our new big construction project for the Pool and Palm Court, and approved use of one of the pickle ball courts as a storage area for the furniture and other items currently in the construction area. Realizing that the loss of three pickle ball courts for an extended peri-

od of time will be an inconvenience for many residents, staff was directed to contact the President of the Racquet Club, and see if it might be feasible to convert one of the tennis courts for pickle ball play, on a temporary basis.

Finally the Board reviewed the 2014 priority list.

Among the top priority items were: the asphalt repair, paving and striping, which is well under way; the activities surrounding the CC&R restatement; the Pool Deck and Palm Court repair; storage in Abravanel Hall; new chairs for Abravanel Hall; the reclaimed water plan; and general water conservation efforts.

Immediately following the Regular Board meeting, the Board met in Executive session. Items discussed were: third party contracts, member disciplinary action, delinquency review, potential litigation, personnel, Executive Committee reports, and approval of prior executive session minutes.

Contracts approved at that meeting were: Renewal of the Retained Service Contract with our Attorney, Fiore, Racobs and Powers. The renewal fee is $1800, the same amount as last year.

Renewal of the Super Shuttle contract at the same rate as last year, $50 per hour. This is for our regularly scheduled bus service.

A contract with Sunset Painting to paint the common area fence at the Cyrus perimeter wall that was repaired,

Ratified and approved all eight Management Contracts with the eight Villages.

Due to some inconsistencies and discussions during the contract phase, the Board decided to rescind the prior approval of a proposal from RoofLife for roof maintenance on Common Area buildings.

Then the Board approved a proposal from Dils Roofing for the same work. Contract amount is not to exceed $15,363.

As I reported last month, the Board met in Executive session on September 23 and approved the bid for the Pool Deck and Palm Court repair. Other third party contracts approved at that session were two proposals from Van Dyke Landscape Architects. One, to provide additional oversight during the construction process, for an amount not to exceed $50,000, and another, to provide a color rendering of the project overall plan, to be displayed in the Clubhouse. This is in an amount not to exceed $960.

The Board met again in Executive Session on September 25 to discuss third party contracts. No contracts were approved at that meeting.

Landscape CommitteeWhat is IPM? (2nd in series)

By Linda Wass and Debbie McCain, IPM Subcommittee IPM is not a single pest control method but, rather, a series of pest management evaluations, decisions and controls. These programs combine management approaches for greater effectiveness and are thus developed for individual locations, climates and cultures. With these approaches, IPM is best described as a continuum. (http:// www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/)There are five major steps or components common to all IPM programs.

Pest Identification. Pests are defined as organisms that damage or interfere with desirable plants in our landscapes or wild lands. A pest can be a plant (weed), vertebrate (bird, rodent, or other mammal), invertebrate (insect, tick, mite, or snail), nematode, pathogen (bacteria, virus, or fungus) that causes disease, or other unwanted organisms that may harm water quality, impact human or animal life, or other parts of the ecosystem.

Monitoring and assessing the landscape is critical in identifying pests and damage that may be present. Visual inspection, insect and spore traps, and other methods are used to monitor pest levels. Record-keeping is essential, as is a thorough knowledge of target pest behavior and reproductive cycles. Since insects are cold-blooded, their physical development is dependent on area temperatures. Many insects have their development cycles modeled in terms of degree-days; plant pathogens follow similar patterns of response to weather and season.

Guidelines for management action are developed considering information about the pest, its biology, and environmental factors, which assist in determining if the pest can be tolerated or whether it is a problem that warrants control. If control is needed, this information is necessary in selecting the most effective management methods and the application timing. The emphasis is on control, not eradication. IPM holds that wiping out an entire pest population is often impossible, expensive and unsafe. IPM programs first work to establish acceptable pest levels, called action thresholds, and apply controls if those thresholds are crossed.

In preventing pest problems, IPM programs seek to combine management approaches for greater effectiveness.

The most effective, long-term way to manage pests is by using a combination of methods that work more effectively together than separately. Rather than simply eliminating the pests you see right now, using IPM means looking at environmental factors that affect the pest and its ability to thrive. Armed with this information, conditions are created that are unfavorable for the pest.

During recent vacation checks of several resident’s homes, CPS officers have found either unlocked doors/ windows or open windows. It’s just good practice to secure your home; please remember to do this.

Based upon calls to the front gate, there is still some confusion regarding the telephone connection necessary for your Emergency Monitoring System (EMS) to properly function. Regardless of whether your telephone service provider is Cox, AT&T or any other phone provider, your EMS will not function without a hard-wired landline. Put differently, if you use any type of phone system utilizing your computer, a modem and/or router or a cellular phone, you will still need a hard wired landline for the EMS to work.

Pet Preparedness Tip: Keep your “family member” crated or on a leash, during an emergency to limit exposure to danger.

We are accepting information for the 2015 OHCC Telephone Directory. If you have ANY question as to whether your information is correct, or if you just want to MAKE SURE that your name will be included, please submit a Request Form, included in the Newsletter, to the HOA Office.

Please stop by the HOA Office to initiate the registration of your Recreational Vehicle. All paperwork will be completed here and you will be assigned a ‘spot’ as one comes available for your size rig.

The OHCC website has many conveniences and we will highlight one a month for you.

Did you know there is a FORMS section on the website? For your convenience, a new page has been created under the Services tab. You may now download, print and submit online many of the Forms that were previously only available in the HOA office.

NEW CARS require a new decal and new transponder. The ones on your old car are obsolete and will be deleted from your account. Please do not attempt to remove them and put them on your new auto.

Street sweeping is done on the first Tuesday of every month. Be sure your cars are off the street by 8:00 a.m.

If you are planning a move, either out of OHCC or within OHCC, please take the time to complete the Moving Form (available in this publication) and bring it in to the HOA Office.

It is mandatory and in your best interest that the HOA maintain current records of our residents, for example, vehicle information including decals and transponders.

It also makes a difference when you authorize visitors and guests to come to your home. If you have had ANY changes in your status, please contact the HOA office.

Information and Assistance for Residents

The OHCC Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has implemented a new unit which, in addition to maintaining CERT records, is aimed at providing information and assistance to residents concerning disaster preparedness and survival. We named this unit the “Records & Information Unit” and it will be located in the Clubhouse CERT Office.

The Unit Manager is Virgian Hughes, a CERT Academy graduate. Originally from Mobile Alabama, Virgian moved to Oceanside in 1990 and then to OHCC six years ago. Although still working at CSUSM, she remains very active in her church’s Youth Ministry as well as with other non-profit help groups. Virgian lists her greatest accomplishment in the past year as her victory over breast cancer. She and her husband Jerry have 6 children and 12 grandchildren.

Clara Herbert is the Unit Assistant Manager and also a CERT Academy graduate. She hails from San Francisco and attended college in Berkeley and Alameda, CA. Before retiring and moving to OHCC eight years ago, Clara worked in the Oakland Unified School District for 25 years in various positions including Public Relations and Communications. Additionally, she has volunteered with several large non-profit organizations. Clara has two children and seven grandchildren.

Although regular “open” hours have not been established for the Unit, if you see the lights on, please come in and say hello.

The Rancho Buena Vista Band Ensemble is performing, along with Captain Elliot Powell, USN, (Ret) who was the Director of the White House Situation Room and responsible for informing President Clinton and later President Bush of International and Domestic issues affecting our national security. Employee Spotlight I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our newest Staff member, Mark Pearsey, as the new Maintenance Director.

Mark is a native Californian — not many of them around anymore! He served in the Naval Reserve for six years and more recently spent 33 years as the regional manager of the western six-state region of a major check-making company, Deluxe/McBee. As the director of ‘Men on a Mission’, Mark assisted in building orphanages in Russia. He has also been involved in erecting a two-story student housing unit for student pilots at Kingdom Air Corps in Alaska, an airstrip in Columbia and a backpacking station in Colorado. Mark lives with his wife of 44 years, Kathy, in Escondido, where he built his own home many years ago.

He brings a strong sense of team-building, a cando attitude, with a huge helping of Customer Service as well as a strong background in all phases of maintenance and construction. Please give him a warm welcome.

ANGLERS CLUB

President Len Holness announces the last meeting of the year, on Tuesday, November 11. This special meeting will be a dinner meeting at the Cambridge Restaurant, 1280 East Vista Way, in Vista. The no host social will begin at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. The cost is $30 per person, with your choice of three delicious entree selections; prime rib, rosemary chicken, or Atlantic salmon, with ice cream and cookies for dessert. All members are invited to attend this end-of-theyear dinner meeting. Drop by the Front Desk to deposit your check for $30 for each dinner purchased, and write your menu selection on the check. We will have a DVD presentation of the 2014 year, and a great drawing for some terrific prizes. If you have any questions feel free to call President Len Holness at 760-941-8857.

At the October meeting, the new Club officers for 2015 were elected. Your 2015 officers are: President Len Holness; Vice-President Jim Wills; Treasurer Bob White; Secretary Mike Caligiuri; and Charter Master Sam Cordeiro. Our last fishing trip of the year, the overnight trip October 1- 2 on the Pacific Voyage, was cancelled because of a mechanical problem on the boat. While we were disappointed to not have a last chance to catch some tuna this year, we are looking forward to the fishing opportunities and tight lines next year.

Please join us at the final dinner meeting of the year on the evening of November 11 at the Cambridge Restaurant in Vista for fun and fellowship about angling in our local waters, plans for the 2015 year, and the latest “fish stories.”

ART LOVERS CLUB

Art Lovers Club members did love the art they viewed in members’ homes in October. Our thanks to Sara Botts, Lynne O’Connor, Bonnie Roth, Bobbie Vasse and Linda Wass for sharing their artistic talents and collections. Members ended the afternoon by gathering at Lainy Vinikow’s home for delightful refreshments and more beautiful art.

Ocean Hills Country Club is the perfect place for art lovers because there is so much art to love.

On November 18 artist Gregg Visintainer will present a program. Gregg made a presentation to the Club several years ago and was so well received and remembered that he has been invited back. Be sure to attend the meeting at l pm in the Mykonos. Margo Friedman will again provide “goodies” before the meeting.

A visit to the Oceanside Art Museum and lunch at the Harbor will conclude the year in December.

BALLROOM DANCE CLUB

Join us as we dance to a live Band on the second Friday of every month from 7 to 10 pm.

Cost of our dances is $8 per member and $10 per non-member. Leave your checks (made out to the OH Ballroom Dance Club) in the Ballroom Dance Club envelope at the Front Desk no later than the Monday preceding the Dance. For seating assignments, come to the Clubhouse Concierge Desk at 3 pm on the day of the dance. Table selections are made by drawing — first for tables of 10, then 8, and so on.

If your group is 3 people or less, you don’t need to come — the host/hostess will seat you at the dance. For more information, call Debbie Machnick at 714-726-8483.

November Dance: Our next dance is on November 14 and we are looking forward to an evening of friends, music, and dancing. Our Band will be Musicstation who may be familiar to some of our members but this will be their first appearance for the Ballroom Dance Club. We think you’ll enjoy Musicstation.

Wednesday Beginner/Intermediate Dance Lessons (free): Lessons are in Abravanel Hall and open to all residents.

Our instructors will teach a single dance for 4-6 weeks and then begin another dance. Single persons are welcome as we encourage our experienced dancers to attend and interact with participants. Lessons will be every Wednesday from 2:30 pm to 4 pm. Beginners at 2:30 pm and Intermediate dancers at 3:15 pm.

Lessons in the Foxtrot were started in October and should be winding up in November and the start of a new dance. Members will be notified by e-mail with current information.

Monday Dance Lessons and Workshops: These lessons and workshops are in Abravanel Hall every Monday and open to all OHCC residents. Classes give participants a chance to learn new dances and/or advanced levels in core dances. We’ll generally alternate between professional instruction (attendees pay a small fee per lesson) for a number of weeks and then in-house directed review workshops (no cost). On October 13, we started (paid) professional instruction in the Night Club Two-Step and will be continuing these lessons into November. Classes will be every Monday from 4 to 5 pm (except November 10 due to unavailability of Abravanel Hall). Members will be notified by e-mail with current information.

BEER CLUB “BEERNUTS”

What a party we have planned for our Beer Clubs.

Both Beernuts and Rhythm and Blues Clubs had a real BeerFest on October 19 with lots of Wurst, German potato salad, Sauerkraut and three great

beers.

The first beer was a beautiful light Orange Wit. Followed by the INTERNATIONAL GOLD MEDAL winner “Islander IPA,” and then a brand new beer made especially for (we figure just us) the beerfests called simply Octoberfest. All three beers are from the “Champion Middle Size Brewery” in the world, our own Coronado Brewing Company... that is a coup.

Our members won’t be cooking this month as their payment takes care of both the great beers and the light dinner and predinner snacks.

Clubs and Activities We will have one more tasting prior to our holiday party in December, featuring a little known but amassing a good reputation, surprising Brewery. A brewery with an amazing red ale that we will down at an alarming rate, I am certain.

If you are interested in joining a Beer Club, just let our incredible membership chair Ann Mulvey know and she will direct you to the right person.

I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I drink lots of it with my friends in the Beer Club. Beer tasting is somewhat like wine tasting, but you needn’t wear your tux or tie.

BILLIARDS CLUB

The “Carom Billiards” Tournament took place on October 9. Four players came out on top of the qualifying round to enter the semi-finals. In the first, Charlie Payne played Paul Yoshida. Paul seldom plays, but shoots a mean stick. The game got to 10-10 with 11 points needed to win. Charlie finally got the last point to end what was the best match of the tournament. In the other semi, Don Farmer beat Sam Smith 11-7, so Don played Charlie in the final.

Here Don’s luck ran out as he never got a decent shot, and Charlie won 11-1.

Coming up on November 6 is the Membership Meeting at 1 pm, followed by the Annual 8-Ball Club Championship.

Everyone who enters the Championship will win a prize, with top prizes including pool cues, dinners for two, and $10-$20 gift certificates. The tournament is only for members, but everyone is welcome to drop in and watch the action.

Our four new 2-piece “house cues” were purchased by players very quickly. We have replaced them with 5 more, which are also for sale. Anyone is welcome to play with them, and if you decide you’d like to keep one, you (anyone, not just Club members) are welcome to just take it! Please pay for it by leaving $20 at the Front Desk, and we will buy a replacement.

Most players do better if they play with the same cue each time, so here’s an easy way to try some cheap cues, and to buy one if you like it.

Our beautiful new Olhausen tables have been a big hit with our players in every way. Olhausen, by the way, is the world’s largest pool table company. Butch and his brother Donny started the company here in San Diego back in 1973. In a day when nearly everything, including pool tables, is made in China, all the Olhausen tables are made in their 250,000 square foot factory in Tennessee. You can see their website at www. olhausenbilliards.com. Our Master Board made a good choice when they selected Olhausen, and we believe that you can feel confident in recommending them to your friends and family.

Remember, these tables belong to everyone, and everyone, member or not, is welcome to use them. The Billiards Room is open whenever the Clubhouse is open, so come on down and visit your tables – maybe even play a little.

BIRDWATCHERS CLUB

The October meeting, which was the last meeting for this year, was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Prior to that meeting, the 2015 officers elected were: Andy Truban-President; Joan Comito-Vice President; Sylvia Carson-Treasurer; Tim Pentel-Secretary; Dick CookMembership.

Bird walks will continue! The walk this month will be TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, to San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar. We will have Jack Friery, excellent birder and our docent, meet us there. Meet at the overflow lot by 7:45 am to form carpools and receive directions. DEPARTURE IS 8 am. The trail is flat and sandy. Wear study shoes and bring a walking stick if needed.

Also have water, hat, binos, and money to help out the driver and for lunch at the Flower Hill Mall. A pair of binoculars will be available to borrow. For questions, please call Andy Truban at 760-631-0029.

The San Dieguito River Lagoon began as part of a $90 million dollar mitigation project to compensate for environmental damage caused by the southern California Edison’s San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. The trail starts at San Andres Drive, a right turn from Via de la Valle.

We will also visit the west side of the lagoon that can be reached from Jimmy Durante Blvd. then turning left onto San Dieguito Drive. There we will stop at the restored Grand Avenue Bridge that was built in 1942 providing access to a U.S. Navy blimp airfield. At that time the Del Mar Fairground buildings served as barracks, galleys, and mess halls for the Navy. After the war, the blimp field was converted into a small airport by the county that purchased the land from the Navy for $1. The airport was shut down in 1959 in anticipation of the construction of Interstate 5.

BOCCE

Good morning boys and girls, yes it’s time for me again and aren’t you lucky? The days just rush right on by while I am trying to find a place to keep cool. The bocce courts are definitely not the place to find it. They did put up on umbrella for the judge to keep cool and I am very grateful.

The courts are in great shape and we need to be grateful to the people who work so hard to keep them that way.

The latest tournament has been completed and because of the time differential I can’t give you the results. If you can imagine a tremendous battle of bocce balls and tired, hot people you can get the message. Our Columbus Day party was a great success in the grand tradition of Bocce parties.

On December 12, THE GREAT HOLIDAY PARTY is being celebrated introducing the NEW BOARD and eating and drinking away the old one. Tickets will be on sale so keep an eye open for a sign in the foyer.

Our Friday Duplicate Bridge Game was held September 12; North/South First Place Winners were Jeanne Green and Ginny Perkins with 64.88%. East/West First Place Winners were Mike Brown and Larry Gneiting.

On September 26, North/South First Place Winners were Gloria Overall and Donna Stark with 70.63. East/West First Place was tied between Anne Caywood and Partner Lu McNary and Larry Gneiting with Partner Mike Brown. Both had a 55.95% game.

CHORAL SOCIETY

Can you believe that the holidays are getting closer and closer and our Chorale is working hard in preparation for our December Concert! We only have 5 rehearsals left! We love the sound coming from our group and the blend with the men and women is as good as it gets! We have 50 active members for our December Concert and a total of 62 members.

We have set a record! We are looking forward to not only sounding great but looking great! We are now working on how we are going to fit on the stage…but do not worry, we will come up with a plan!

We have some new songs and arrangements that we are all enjoying and yes, we will be doing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus!

It gives us goose bumps when we sing it and hope you all will enjoy it as well! Our two beautiful Hawaiian Dancers will again be joining us, as well as our soloists, Ladies Quartet, Four Lads and we have a couple of new surprises for you. You are going to like what you see!

CINEMATIC & MUSICAL ART APPRECIATION

WEEKEND FILMS: All films are shown in the Ladies Club Room every Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless exempted by a priority event or holiday. Show times are at 2:30 pm, 5 pm and 7:30 pm each day unless the film is over 2 hours and 20 minutes in length. When this occurs, the 5 pm show will be omitted and the last show will be at 7 pm. An additional Early Bird show at 11 am on Sundays has been introduced for only the most potentially popular and critically acclaimed films.

GARDEN CLUB

The November 12 Garden Club meeting kicks off the Holiday season with home decorating ideas.

At 10 am, our guest speaker Dwight Goldblatt will begin his presentation. Social time begins at 9:30 am, during which members are encouraged to purchase tickets for the Home Tour and tickets for the Holiday Luncheon to be held on Wednesday, December 10. Bring you checkbooks!

We are happy to have a Garden Club member, Dwight Goldblatt, demonstrate how to decorate wreaths for the Holidays so we can easily make our own creations at home. He will teach design techniques, such as balancing color and texture, and how to determine the theme and color schemes to complement our homes. Over the years, Goldblatt has contributed a great deal of his time and talent to Garden Club activities. He has given several floral design and flower arranging presentations and led workshops to help participants create their own flower arrangements and succulent arrangements. Dwight also held a Giftwrapping Workshop and taught how to wrap presents like a professional. In October, he assisted at the Holiday Craft workshop.

Goldblatt was born in Texas, spent his childhood in Colorado, and moved to California in his teens. In California, Dwight worked as an interior designer for twenty years. One of his most memorable jobs was remodeling a kitchen and breakfast nook in a Victorian home. The project was featured in the L.A. Times and appeared in several publications because photographers loved taking pictures of the purple walls and the brilliant carpeting that resembled a stained glass window. For the next thirty-five years, Goldblatt was a floral designer and florist. He still does floral designs for special events such as luncheons and weddings, and he decorates several homes at Christmas.

Goldblatt has lived in OHCC for the past ten years, and his home will be one of six featured on the Holiday Home Tour.

Goldblatt is an avid gardener whose current favorite flower is the orchid.

Upcoming Garden Club Events Saturday, November 8: Visit the Garden Club booth at the annual OHCC Craft Fair to purchase holiday items.

Wednesday, December 10: Attend the Holiday Home Tour from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm to enjoy seeing six homes beautifully decorated for Christmas. Only 175 tickets are available at $10 each. Tickets will be sold at the November meeting and at the Concierge Desk on November 3 and December 1.

Wednesday, December 10: Enjoy a lovely salad, spring rolls, and dessert at the Garden Club’s Holiday Luncheon at 12:30 pm in Abravanel Hall. Tickets will be sold at the November meetings for $22 each. Get your friends together and sign up for this annual event.

Random Thought about Wreaths: In the early days of Europe, people would put wreaths on their doors to identify their home in the same manner that house numbers are used today. Each house would have a different wreath made of exotic flowers, most likely grown by the homeowner.

GARDENING NEWS by Melvina Terry

It is bulb planting time. Plant more ranunculus to extend your bloom period. Plant cyclamen in shade areas. Plant snow drops, crocus, anemones and muscari in plastic vegetable baskets (the kind you get cherry tomatoes in) to keep them from sinking and rotting out. If you label your bulbs, it will alert you from accidentally digging up bulbs out of season. It is also time to plant tulips, daffodils, narcissi, fritillaria, lily, allium and Dutch iris. These bulbs should be planted five to seven inches deep, depending on their size, rule of thumb: the bigger the bulb, the deeper you plant. Do not grow tulip bulbs year-after-year in the same place. Sooner or later, they may be attacked with a fungus disease called fire blight. Either change the soil or location. In other words, follow the principle of crop rotation. However, I find that tulips rarely repeat because they need a cold period.

No other types of plants will give the gardener more beauty, or a wider range of variety, color and flowering time than bulbs.

They will produce flowers of incredible colors from one end of the growing season to the next. Nothing else will reward you with so much pleasure for so little effort. Color and time of bloom are the two most important elements to consider when planting. Good soil preparation is the first step to success. Make sure that the soil is loose and porous. In our soil, this means lots of perlite or vermiculite. Well-drained soil is a must or bulbs will rot. Work a bulb nutrient such as Bulb Booster into the soil.

The spacing of bulbs depends largely on the effect that you are trying to achieve. In my opinion, the most effective planting technique is to plant most bulbs in clumps rather than lined up in rows. Space bulbs according to color, with the softer colors in the front and the more vibrant in the background. Group bulbs according to height and in a sequential bloom pattern for a long-lasting show of color.

It is time to prune or transplant camellias, rhododendron and azalea. Strangely enough, these plants are dormant during the blooming season. Remove all but the center buds of the camellias for bigger/better flowers. Feed your citrus for the last time this year. Give them a double “whammy.” This will result in sweeter fruit. Also, lightly feed cacti and succulents. Plant violas and pansies in full sun. I prefer violas as they don’t look as unsightly when it is time to deadhead them.

We will again have tables for 10 available. After that you may put your individual checks, with your menu selection included, in the Golf Club’s check envelope at the Front Desk and please be sure to sign up and select a table in the Golf Club folder.

You may select a table with a group write the names of the people in your party on the table selection sheet. Those sitting together should group their checks together. The luncheon will be Wednesday, December 17, with no host bar at 11:15 am and luncheon served at 11:45 am. Champagne and sparkling cider upon arrival will be provided by Rita Harper, SRES Coldwell Banker. The menu choices are as follows: spinach salad with fresh grilled salmon; classic cob salad; or vegetable wellington with celery puree. The price is $27 for members and $29 for nonmembers. We will be entertained by pianist/singer/song writer Jessica Lerner and as usual will have wonderful prizes, gift bags and raffle…” Wow, that was quite a mouthful of information. Speaking of mouthfuls, I would like a mouthful of those entrees, except for maybe the celery puree.

LIBRARY

Are you aware that in addition to being the most beautiful room in our Clubhouse, the Library is also considered to be the “living room” of OHCC? Therefore, all residents are more than welcome to borrow books from the open shelves, use the computer, or take advantage of any of the room’s amenities.

Membership, though, does have special benefits. A member may sign up for any new book and will be called as soon as his or her name comes up on the list. A member may also check out books from the Reserve Shelf (newer and some donated books) and request that certain titles be purchased.

Right now it’s bargain time. If you’re not already a member, join now. For $15 per household, you’ll be paid through 2015 and you can begin just as soon as you give your check to a librarian or turn it in at the Front Desk.

NuBEES

Please come and join us whether you are a “new NuBee” or a “not so new” NuBee. We are routinely scheduled to meet on the 3rd Monday evening of each month.

Starting in November NuBees will be held Abravanel Hall. Our social time is at 5:30 pm with appetizers starting at 6 pm. Please bring an appetizer or special dish for 10-12 people and your beverage of choice. There is always water and ice available.

Cups, flatware, plates, napkins, etc., are provided.

We have a core group of regular volunteers, Holly Radziwon and Bill Vogel. We also have an opportunity for a monthly Host/ Hostess. Our hosts for October were George and Adele Carabet, and our hosts for November are Janet and Garrett Bouma. We have a sign- up sheet available for those who would like to host a month of NuBees, and we will need additional help with the Holiday Nubee’s Caroling and Chili Dinner in December. We ask that only our core helpers and Host/Hostess for the month bring dessert. Dessert should also serve 10-12 people. We also ask for a small monthly donation to cover the expense of our paper goods.

Bring a friend or a new neighbor. Make sure that we have your correct email. If you have a new email, or you are interested in receiving our email notices, come to our next NuBee’s gathering or call me (Jean Hefler 760-724-8108) and we will make sure that you are on our list. Put these dates on your calendar: Monday, November 17 and Wednesday, December 10 for our Caroling and Chili Dinner in the Mykonos Room. Be sure to sign up for this event as our numbers are limited. OHSPA (Ocean Hills Society for the Performing Arts)

Those of you who attended the Ben Vereen show certainly can attest to the quality of performance and that it was a great bargain! Where else can you see such a legend and someone of his caliber almost within walking distance of your home, never have to worry about traffic, arriving back in your house before 9:30 pm and buying subsidized tickets right in your own Clubhouse and for only $30? You all know how much a ticket costs on Broadway or even in the theaters such as the McCallum in Palm Desert, CA and Civic Theater in San Diego.

OHSPA has three great shows scheduled for 2015 and we are trying very hard to “KEEP OHSPA ALIVE.” We want to 38 Ocean Hills Country Club Newsletter • November 2014

continue OHSPA through 2016 and beyond. We really need your help to do this so we have kept our Star Donor Program again for 2015. Anyone who makes a tax deductible donation of $1,000 per couple will receive two reserved seats of your choice (even in the very front row!) for each of the 3 shows in 2015. Individuals who make a $500 donation will receive one reserved seat of your choice for each of the 3 shows in 2015. We can accommodate those individuals who would like to sit with another person or persons. Just let us know what you would like to do and we can make it happen. You will get a receipt showing your very large tax deductible donation. Some may prefer to wait until 2015 and take the deduction then. Just let us know and we will take care of that for you.

PET LOVERS CLUB

The Pet Lovers Club recently launched its new website: ohccdg.wix.com/ohcc-petlovers. The new site is full of information on caring for your pets, OHCC pets and their people, Club news and events, the Cat Connection and a photo gallery. You’ll also find information on how to donate goods, volunteering, adopting and links to outside humane organizations. The site will be continually updated with new information and you don’t need to be a member to access the site. So, check it out and visit often. You can also access the site through the Ocean Hills Country Club website under “Clubs.”

Be sure to come by the Pet Lovers Club table on Do Dues Day, January 3, to join this great Club!

Remember that we need to keep our furry family members safe. Cats should be kept indoors and dogs should be on a leash when not within the confines of the yard. As part of the annual vehicle registration, homeowners should also register their pets. Pets should be micro-chipped and should have a name tag with owners’ current name and information on it.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

The Photography Club meeting for this month is Thursday, November 20 in the MENS Club Room (please note we are meeting in a different room than usual). At this meeting, we will be receiving, reviewing and accepting prints of “Activities of the Residents at OHCC” to be displayed in the Art Studio. They will be hung the first part of December.

RACQUET CLUB

Paddle Tennis celebrated their year-end activities with a social mixer tournament on September 23.

There were 21 excited participants, some of whom were very new to the sport. Although there was lots of competition to earn raffle tickets, there was lots of social interaction, too.

Clubs and Activities Players had to switch partners and opponents every 4 games!

Following the tournament, there was a scrumptious dinner provided by Mama’n Papa’s Pizza Grotto of Vista, who also donated several gift cards for the raffle. Half the participants won raffle prizes, but the rest enjoyed some very good food and fun play. Anyone who would like to give paddle tennis a try can attend the Tuesday morning drop-in games at the Clubhouse courts. Players are usually there from 8:30 am to 10/10:30 am, and paddles are available.

Our largest ever pickleball tournament was held on October 8 and 9 under beautiful weather conditions! Herb Livsey, Allan Singer, and Dannica Wood organized the 2-day, 4-level event– and all parts ran smoothly! On Wednesday night, 16 players in Group 3 played under the lights–a first for a tournament.

Winners were Pam Green in 3rd place, Susan Smith in 2nd, and Hiro Kumasaka in 1st place. On Thursday morning, Groups 1 and 2 with 11 players each, played at the HOA courts. New and novice players were highly encouraged to participate, and participate they did! In Group 1, Pete Cannon came in 3rd place, Pattie Cox and Clare Mowery tied for 2nd, and Fred Ganoe took 1st place. In Group 2, Sharon Olson won 3rd place, Betsy Crane took 2nd, and Ana Yoshida won 1st place. At the Clubhouse courts, 20 players in Group 4 battled it out on all three courts. Scott Goldwasser and Fred Peppe tied for 3rd place, Bernie Alfonso came in 2nd, and Mike Ball won 1st place.

A winning luncheon followed, organized by Sondra Peppe, with plenty of salad, garlic bread, two entrés from Palomar Pizza and Pasta, delicious cake and ice cream, and of course beer and soft drinks. A cheer of thanks goes out especially to Sondra, but also

to all her helpers: Dannica Wood, Judy Gagnon, Judy Graham, Lynda Levine, Donna Cook, Diane Bellerive, Joan McAlister, Fred Peppe, and Susan Smith. Herb Livsey awarded all winners with beautiful shirts donated by Nike and then thanked all participants and volunteer scorekeepers and timers Jim Quinn, Gerry Livsey, and Donna Cook. And WE all thank Herb Livsey!

Great job running yet another fun and competitive tournament!

Tickets went on sale October 1 for the Racquet and Sailing Clubs’ Holiday Dinner Dance to be held on December 7. The event was sold out within minutes, and a waiting list is in our Club folder in case of cancellations. The party is sure to be a great success, as usual. The dinner will be catered by “The Village Kitchen & Pie Shop,” and our music will be performed by “Sundance.”

SAILING CLUB

The election of Sailing Club officers, originally scheduled for the October meeting, has been postponed until November. Candidates for office nominated by the nominating committee are: Commodore, Allan Poulutzian; Vice Commodore, Bob Kopolow; Treasurer, Evy Sanfilippo; Fleet Captain, Forrest Newburg. Sally Booth is nominated to replace Bill Smith as Secretary. Bill is retiring after six years in the post. Nominations from the floor for all posts will be considered at the meeting. Tickets went on sale for the annual Sailing Club – Racquet Club Holiday Party on October 1, and sold out immediately. The date will be Sunday, December 7 in Abravanel Hall. As usual, it will be an opportunity to dress up (black tie optional), and cost will be $40 per person for club members and $45 per person for non-members. There is a waiting list in the Racquet Club folder (the host this year) at the Front Desk in the Clubhouse. Last year, many of the couples on the waiting list were able to attend due to cancellations.

The Catalina trip on October 22-24 was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Carol Barry and Bonnie Gardner.

Highlights of the trip will be the subject of a slide presentation at a future meeting. Rather than returning to Catalina in 2015, Activities Director Mel Feintuch is considering organizing a Mexican Riviera Cruise next year. Find out more at upcoming meetings.

While the pace of activities will slow down in the fall, there will still be opportunities for day sails. The best way to sign up is to attend the monthly meetings and sign up at the meeting.

If you miss the meeting, check either the Club website or the Sailing Club folder at the Front Desk to see which captain is taking out a boat, and on which date. The Sailing Club website contains a link that informs users about future sails and allows you to sign up or add your name to the waiting list. If the boat is not full, add your name to the list and put a check for $45 in the check envelope to be added to the sail. Priority goes to those who place their checks in the Sailing Club envelope earliest.

Join us at our next meeting on November 4 (election day) to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks, and to sign up for upcoming sails. Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the business meeting begins at 7:30 pm. Don’t forget to vote!

SENIOR FITNESS CLUB

The Senior Fitness Club meets Tuesdays at 1 pm and Thursdays at 11 am in Abravanel Hall. The annual dues are $5 and the class fee is $3 per class.

The classes consist of low-impact exercise, including balance and coordination, flexibility and range of motion, stretching and strengthening. Come on down and join us!

Instructor, Carl Grubbs, is a Senior Fitness Coach who has taught Senior Fitness classes at OHCC and other locations for over 12 years. He has won numerous medals in the Senior Olympics.

With October over, we are winding up our sewing year and starting to think about projects for 2015. What would you like to make? As you go to craft fairs this fall keep your eyes open for interesting items; we are always looking for new ideas.

Two possible charity projects were mentioned — colorful pillowcases for the children’s ward at hospitals and Santa stockings for 2015. At the August brunch one of the Hoffman challenge projects was a rainbow table runner which the Friday group will make in January and February.

Fabric backed plates with a birthday or holiday theme was a big hit in the past and we will probably schedule another class. Think about it.

There is a members meeting on November 6 and a craft on November 20 — a window ornament. Then December is quiet with no sewing meetings or projects.

Show and Tell was especially busy in October — Halloween mug rugs, mesh bags and blooming t-shirts from our classes were displayed. Three finished quilts, a knitted sweater, a little girls skirt, t-shirt artwork, an advent calendar, pillowcases and two styles of aprons. Two very different styles of aprons — one made from a man’s dress shirt the other more of a French maid look.

The last thing for Show and Tell was something very special. Do you remember making paper chains at school? Ingrid shared with us a paper chain she crafted. Each of the loops on the chain was made from a wrist bracelet saved from a hospital procedure. The 20 foot chain is a vivid reminder as she celebrates five years survival with ovarian cancer. Congratulations!

SWIM CLUB

The OHCC Swim Club is feeling a little sad that our pool will be closing during November, but we are happy that the new deck repairs are finally getting done. We look forward to a nice new look. Tri-City Wellness is providing a discounted rate for all residents. Of course there is an even better discount if you volunteer at Tri-City Hospital. The Master Board has approved to accommodate riders to and from Tri-City Wellness and Purefitness twice a week.

Our annual Holiday Party will be on December 4 at the Bellefleur Restaurant in Carlsbad from 11 am to 2:30 pm.

The menu choices will be rosemary baked half chicken with vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes or baked salmon with rice and vegetables. Desert, will be chocolate mousse or Crème Burlee. The price for members is $23 and $28 for non-members.

I hope you can join us for a little fun and “Alan Land” will be entertaining us with some wintery holiday music. We also plan a raffle and door prizes.

THEATRE ARTS

Theatre Arts has been very busy this Fall! We hope you enjoyed our October production of The Sights and Sounds of Ocean Hills. The multi-media presentations and live performances were both unique and entertaining! Many thanks to everyone, especially Rick Thatcher and all the AV folks, whose time, effort and very hard work made this show possible!

Congratulations to our new board for 2015: President, Jean Hefler; Vice President, Lois Powazek; Treasurer, Phyllis Buvel; Secretary, Thelma White; and, returning in an advisory position, Rick Thatcher! We are also pleased to have Cathy King returning as our AV Liaison and Martha Russo as our Sunshine Coordinator.

NOVEMBER — We are very excited to once again bring you the San Diego Harmony Bell Ringers. If you missed them last year, make sure you plan to see them this year at a special date and time — Sunday afternoon, November 9, at 3:30 pm. It will be free to members and $5 for guests! They perform all genres of music, and at the completion of their show, they welcome the audience members on stage to try out the different bells. It is amazing to watch and to actually lift and ring the bells of all sizes. If you join Theatre Arts at this event, your membership will be good through 2015.

This Fall has seen some of our members participating in Acting for Seniors class taught by Al Valletta. We hope to be able to see their new skills in future performances. We are so proud of

our members and their dedication to improving their abilities!

Play Readers, led by Steve McConnell, is also continuing on the first Wednesday of each month from 1 to 4 pm in the Art Room. Members are encouraged to come and enjoy reading plays in a stress free environment!

DECEMBER — We are in the planning process for our Holiday Party, “Masquerade,” scheduled for Monday, December 1, once again coordinated by the ever so creative Theresa Howell.

TRAVEL CLUB

November 10 — 6 pm — The Annual Installation Banquet will take the place of our regular meeting. Our new theme is “Travel Feast” and this year we are highlighting Italy.

Members $20 and Non-Members $25. Choice of entrees and dessert.

Detailed flyers on all trips sponsored by the Travel Club are located in the Trip racks at the Clubhouse.

If you are not a Travel Club member, add an additional $5 per person to the price of the trip. All our Day Trips leave from the Overflow Parking Lot in a comfortable tour bus. VILLAGE LINE DANCERS

November brings Thanksgiving and with it turkey, gravy, and all the fixings. But line dancing helps to provide exercise in a month when overeating is common.

Christine Alesiani teaches three of our line dance classes.

She teaches the introductory class on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, the Level 1 class on Mondays from 12:30 to 2 pm, and the Level 2 class on Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 12 pm. These classes cost $5 a session, except for the introductory class on Thursdays which is $4.

Betty Heyer, our dedicated and talented resident, teaches a review class on Mondays from 2 to 3:30 pm and there is no charge for this class.

At our line dance meeting in October new officers were elected. They are as follows: President-Valerie Davis; Vice President-Clarice Holness; Secretary-Norma Orseth; Treasurer-Jan Cryan; Director-Betty Heyer; and Director of Communications- Dovey Roah. This talented group of new officers will begin serving in January. The next meeting will be December 8 and our Holiday Party will be December 15.

VILLAGE SQUARES

Howdy Pardner! Well, Square Dancing does sound like we should be dancing to Country Music, but we don’t. At least not most of the time! We dance to whatever has the right beat for us. In our classes that beat is slower, as we are learning. In Club, the beat is faster, as the members have graduated from a year’s worth of classes. Which brings me to the fact that our 2014 class graduated last month and can now join us for our Wednesday night Club dances. Yippee!

This month, I am going to shine the spotlight (totally appropriate) on one of our past Presidents, Valerie Thompson. Actually, Valerie served two terms in this capacity. WOW! First in 2005, and again in 2011. Bravo Valerie!

Valerie is a native Californian, who was born in L.A., grew up in Riverside, and went to College at Stanford, where she met her husband of 53 years Gene Thompson. They raised four children, and were both teachers in Upland. She taught English, and he taught music, choir and band.

In my opinion Valerie qualifies as a Super Mom. “She worked with gifted children and became the director of the gifted program. She worked for the California Department of Middle Schools and the California Literature Project, in which capacities she gave workshops to fellow English teachers, in addition to serving as Language Arts mentor for her school district. In that role she developed the writing tests and scoring

Clubs and Activities rubrics for the district and again gave workshops with her other mentors.” The topping on the cake, she authored a book, The Write Stuff. All this while raising four children at home.

Valerie continued her Super Woman persona after they retired and came to Ocean Hills in 2001. Immediately, they joined Tap Dance, and Square Dance. Valerie also joined the Hawaiian Dance, and started the Book Club, while Gene joined the Golf Club. Sometime later she joined the Drama Club. Now you will see her on stage under the spotlight, either performing in a play or dance review, maybe even doing a beautiful Hawaiian Dance if you’re lucky.

As for her commitment to the Square Dance Club, she has been Vice President, Secretary, and President. For many years she has been the Outreach Chair, who keeps in touch with other Square Dance Clubs in our area. In that capacity, she was in charge of setting up the dances at OHCC that included outside clubs, a huge responsibility. You will see Valerie at all the student classes, and Verl’s Thursday class, as well as at all the Club dances on Wednesday. Did I mention that she is always ready to help in whatever capacity she is needed, if asked.

“We loved the camaraderie and friendships we developed in square dance. Square dancing is an important part of my life. The people here are the friendliest and the best. I look forward to many more years of Spin the Top, and Relay the Ducey.”

VILLAGE VETS

The Veterans Club of Ocean Hills invites you to join family, friends and neighbors as we celebrate Veterans’ Day on Tuesday, November 11 at 11 am in Abravanel Hall. Doors will open at 10:30 am.

This day was set aside to honor our military and the job they have done to keep our nation “home of the free and home of the brave.” It is a time set aside to show our appreciation and to give thanks from a grateful nation to these brave men and women for their service, our freedom and often great sacrifice.

This year we will be thanking all of our veterans and we are so proud to have all of you in our village. We will be highlighting the oldest service – US Army. Our keynote speaker will be CAPT. Elliott Powell, USN, (Ret) who was the Director of the White House Situation Room and responsible for informing President Clinton and later President Bush of International and Domestic issues affecting our national security. He had direct contact to the president at all hours of the day and night.

He will tell us amusing stories that I promise have never before been released to the media.

The Rancho Buena Vista High School Wind Ensemble will be providing our service songs and taps; the El Camino Real ROTC cadets will be our color guard and our very own veterans in their dress blues will be the honor guard. The Garden Club again is sponsoring our traditional floral wreath and Bob Wong will be putting his touches on the wreath for the decorating.

WALKERS AND HIKERS

November hopefully will mean a little cooler weather as we head inland to explore some beautiful areas. We will have two hikes this month. We will also be heading out of town to Cambria for a lot of hiking and a couple of nights enjoying the area.

The first hike of the month will be to Hell Hole Canyon in Valley Center on Friday, November 7. This will be one of our more challenging hikes of the year. It is in a beautiful canyon with a creek that flows much of the year. The main trail descends from the staging area to the riparian zone astride Hell Creek. Here hikers will find a reprieve from the sun as mature Sycamore and oak trees line the creek bed. The trails beyond Hell Creek begin to challenge hikers as they rise out of the creek bed and transition into the chaparral plant community. As usual, hikers can do as much of the trail as they wish. After the hike we will

be going to the Lake Wolford Cafe.

From November 11 to the 13 we will be heading up the coast to Cambria. We will spend two nights in this lovely town hiking and partying. It should be a great time.

The second hike of the month will be on Thursday, November 20 at Mission Trails Park on the Ridge Trail. The park consists mostly of rugged canyons and hills, with both natural and developed recreation areas, including many beautiful flowers.

It is the seventh-largest open space urban park in the United States, consisting of 6,150 acres (24.9 km2). The highest point is 1,592-foot-high (485 m) Cowles Mountain, which is also the highest point in the city of San Diego. We will decide on where we are going for lunch on the day of the hike.

If you decide to join us for either of the two hikes, for personal comfort, don’t forget to bring water, good sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat on any of our hikes. For all hikes, even easy ones, these four items are highly recommended. All four items are important, but on warm sunny days, which we have an abundance of, water and a hat become even more crucial.

All of our hikes start at the Overflow Parking Lot where we meet at 8:30 am and carpool to the trail head.

WOODCHUCKS

The great part of the Woodchucks is that there is usually never a dull moment. There is always something going on or happening or going to happen or try to make something good happen. Sometimes it takes years to accomplish but patience is always virtuous if you stay around long enough, Officers for next year were nominated at the October meeting. They were as follows: Murph Haugen President; Bob Nelke, Vice President; Ron Gagnon, Treasurer; Dick Cook, Secretary and Bob Allen, Master at Arms. Everybody at the meeting approved the selection.

Discussions were held about the things to come next year and where we wanted to go. They were very informative and it

Clubs and Activities should be a great year with most of the pressures behind so we can go forward better and faster.

Larry Bowers had a great display of part of his collection of all wood cars and trucks.

It is hoped that the recycling takes a big jump for the rest of the year. Prices on everything have risen so please rise to the occasion.

All in all, if you missed the meeting, that was too bad. The meeting was great, the show was great, the food was great, and the door prizes were great. There are only six meetings a year for a couple of hours. It is important for you to support your Club.

The Christmas toy drive will be well under way by the time you read this article. Spread the word about the Marine families need for toys. Let’s get the Clubhouse really filled up this year.

Talia’s performed as lead in Sound of Music, The Little Mermaid, Alice and Wonderland, Annie and Cinderella.

There will be a large array of desserts and fruit directly after the performance. Flyers will be in your tube soon. Tickets will be $18 for paid members and $20 for non-members. Ticket sales start Friday, November 21 from 9 am to 2 pm.

This performance will bring 2014 to a close.
