First Session – September 14, 2015

Design to purchase replacement servers, as well as additional routers and switches for the Clubhouse, in an amount not to exceed $7,000.

The Annual Meeting of the Members was held on August 20, 2015 and was immediately followed by the Organizational Meeting. The Organizational Meeting was held electing the incumbent Board members Angela Takemoto as President, Don Lopez as Vice-President, Linda Strohm as Secretary, David Hefler as Treasurer, and Board Directors Scott Goldwasser, Ira Landis, and Robert Smith.

The Executive Orientation Meeting Session was held on August 21, 2015 for Board members to meet with affiliates of the Associa-PCM organization, Legal Counsels, Reserve Analyst and Auditor. Committee assignments were also confirmed for: the Citation Review Executive Committee members as Scott Goldwasser, Linda Strohm, and Angela Takemoto; Architectural Committee Liaison – Robert Smith; Audio/ Visual Committee Liaison – David Hefler; Community Service Committee Liaison – Scott Goldwasser; Golf Course Committee Liaison – Don Lopez; Landscape Committee Liaison – Linda Strohm; and Marketing Committee Liaison – Ira Landis. One third party contract was approved, for a proposal from TLG Paving to perform repairs in the Clubhouse parking lot prior to the reseal and restriping project, in an

I. President Takemoto called the Regular Meeting to order at 10:01 a.m.

II. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice President Lopez.

III. PRESIDENT’S REPORT President Takemoto welcomed the membership to the monthly Regular Board Meeting and announced that the Consent Calendar had been moved to the Thursday Session to allow the Board to include multiple items in one motion, for approval of all items with no Board discussion. One item for Consent Calendar consideration is Approval of Liens, which by moving this vote to Thursday, allows time for the Board to review the lien in Executive session on Monday.

President Takemoto apprised the membership as to the matters to be addressed, and items completed, as well as the Executive Session held since the last monthly Board Meeting. The Executive Session held on August 17, 2015 reviewed third party contracts, Member appeals, legal opinions, personnel, delinquency review, Executive Committee reports, and approval of minutes of prior executive sessions.

The contracts approved were a proposal from Advanced Reserve Solutions Inc. to perform the 2015-2016 Reserve Study Update, including photographs of all components, for an amount not to exceed $7,450; one proposal from Professional Systems Design, I.T. (Information Technology) Consultant Jerry Perrella, for the Remote Services Agreement in the amount of $449 per month, that includes remote monitoring of OHCC computers and servers, backup, and anti-virus support; and a second proposal from Professional Systems

IV. MANAGEMENT REPORT In the Management Report, Becky Groenewold, General Manager, apprised the membership of the following: • The Clubhouse parking lot repairs, sealing and striping work has been postponed due to pending rain. The rescheduled partial and complete closure dates and times will be announced via email blast and posted at the Clubhouse and on Channel 12 broadcast.

• Ron Carso is working with the Audio/Visual (A/V) Committee in researching the cost to purchase a backup ATX that will help prevent broadcast system downtime.

• The new Maintenance Director, Gary Allman, will pursue research into solar power and new conservation alternatives for OHCC common buildings.

• The Golf Course Architect, Cary Bickler, will be presenting a plan to the Master Board for the reclaimed water project and turf reduction on the Golf Course.

• The sleeves for the volley ball net at the pool have been installed and some minor warranty work is being addressed for completion of the pool and palm court project.

• The annual tree assessment specifications are being presented to Master Board for approval to be sent out to bid.

• The positions at the HOA Office are filled and there are three (3) open positions for Clubhouse maintenance and facilities.

• Interior designers for the Clubhouse will meet with the Master Board for a follow-up review of their bids and portfolio of work.

• A master storage plan follow-up meeting will be scheduled with Linda Strohm, Robert Smith, Tony Gillette, the General Manager and Architects do develop a scope of work.

• A/V Staff member Anthony Scalise continues working with Barbara Coert, Chris Bessey and Clubhouse Staff to improve and streamline both email blasts and bulletin board postings to the in-house broadcast system. A brief video created about the dog park was nicely done.

• There has been a significant increase of activity on the website, with average hits per day at 647 in August compared to 563 in July.

V. TREASURER’S REPORT Treasurer David Hefler gave the following Treasurer’s Report: As we close August, the fifth month of our 2015/2016 Fiscal Year, we are in strong financial condition with net reserves of $2,691,685. Statements reflect an operating deficit of $13,923 for the month of August, and a year-to-date operating surplus of $126,219. Year-to-date variances as of August: Unanticipated Income is $15,299; Below-budget income is $10,000; Below-budget expenses are $203,257; and Over-budget expenses are $126,933. Total assets of $3,866,802 include $2,287,000 worth of FDIC-Insured Certificates of Deposit. A copy of the Financial Statements is available for review in the HOA Office.

A. CC&Rs Restatement Ad Hoc Committee – Update: Vice President Lopez reported that the deadline for the Mortgage holders to respond for approval is September 28th, and it is anticipated that tacit approval will exceed the 75% requirement. The next step will be to file a petition with the San Diego Superior Court seeking approval to remove the language regarding restriction on changing the logo and compensation of Directors.

B. Subcommittee, Handbook of Rules and Regulations Review:Treasurer Hefler reported the proposed revisions are being presented to the Master Board for review and the first reading of the changes will be presented to the membership at the Thursday meeting.

C. Subcommittee, Storage Review: Director Smith reported the subcommittee will meet again with the prospective architects to review the overall storage needs in order for them to submit conceptual architectural bids for storage alternatives.

NEW BUSINESS A. Subcommittee, Turf Reduction Plan – Appointment and Approval Authority: The OHCC master turf reduction application was approved by the Southern California Water Smart organization and the work needs to be completed by December 11, 2015. There was a discussion about the formation of a subcommittee to oversee the work on the new turf reduction project, and work with landscape vendors to get designs and cost estimates together and present to the Board for approval. It was the general consensus of the Master Board that the subcommittee not be given financial approval authority at this time. If financial approval is needed prior to a regular Board meeting, the Master Board can call an emergency meeting. Treasurer Hefler recommended the Subcommittee identify a second 25,000 square feet area for future turf rebate consideration.

Motion made and seconded (R. Smith/S. Goldwasser) to create a Turf Reduction Plan Subcommittee for the Master Common Areas and appoint Angela Takemoto, Don Lopez, and Linda Strohm to oversee this task and bring their results back to the Master Board as soon as possible. Motion passed unanimously.

The contracts approved were a proposal from Van Dyke Landscape Architects to create the design and plans for the 25,000 square feet turf removal areas, in order to obtain the $25,000 rebate from the Metropolitan Water District, in an amount not to exceed $6,700; a one year extension to the existing time and materials contract with Michael Baker International, previously referred to as RBF Consulting, who assists OHCC in dealing with the Metropolitan Water District related to ground water issues; a proposal from interior designer RBN Design to prepare a master design plan for the Clubhouse common areas, and detailed design proposals for the Ladies’ and Men’s Clubrooms and the Music Room, in an amount not to exceed $14,250; a proposal from O’Connell Landscape Maintenance to perform the annual fuel abatement work on the slopes surrounding the Community, an amount not to exceed $34,800; a proposal from Powers Publishing to produce the 2016 and 2017 Phone Directories, with the contract projecting a profit, or income, to OHCC in the range of $16,800 to $23,000 for each year; renewal of the contract with Super Shuttle to provide bus transportation for the community, at the same rate as last year, $50 per hour; and two (2) proposals from JBL Business Communications related to upgrades in cabling for the computers and servers in the Clubhouse, for a total contract amount not to exceed $3,000.

XI. STAFF REPORTS RECREATION – Chris Bessey, Recreation Director, reported: upcoming events are the Ice Cream Social on September 30, the Annual Flea Market on September 26, Flu shots by Walgreen’s on September 26, and the Residents vs.

Staff Water Volleyball games on October 2; mall trip transportation services to Julian will be on September 21; the openings for evening shift Facilities full-time position and weekend Facilities Lead position are in process to hire; there were 674 activities between July 26 and August 25, 2015; and there are no budget issues.

LANDSCAPE – On behalf of Tom Hogan, Landscape Operations Director, General Manager Groenewold reported: fertilizer is being applied to the master common slopes and planting areas; modifications are being made to the front 9 bunkers on the Golf Course, to improve entry and exit; the irrigation parts inventory continues to be maintained; Ron Matranga of Atlas Environmental Services has completed the annual assessment of the common area trees, and the work will be sent out to bid; turf areas have been fertilized and treated with soil conditioners for moisture retention; there were a total of 124 work orders for the month of August; a copy of the Pesticide Use Report for the month of August is available in the HOA Office and on the website; and the Golf Course Operations is $28,697.67 under budget and the Landscape Common Area Operations is $51,238.75 under budget, both due to water savings. Staff exceeded the 20% water reduction mandate for the month of July/August 2015 water usage by 50% for the same month period comparison in 2013; the penalty for not meeting the monthly mandate is a potential 40% increase in water cost.

COMMUNITY PATROL SERVICE REPORT On behalf of Len Weinstein, Director of Community Patrol Services, General Manager Groenewold stated the report for the month of August was provided to the Master Board for review. President Takemoto remarked that a member of the Racquet Club created a diagram identifying locations of the Community courts, for the members as well as emergency responder’s reference.

COMMITTEE REPORTS ARC – Chairperson Frank Haroldson reported that the Architectural Review Committee dealt with 36 new applications in August; 33 were approved, including two (2) that were previously tabled; one (1) denied; and two (2) tabled pending receipt of further information. AUDIO/VISUAL –Chairperson Bob Herrmann reported:A/V supported the Master Board and Annual meetings, and the Concert on the Green event; members continue to improve their skills on the new equipment in the refurbished booth; the A/V Open House on July 31, 2015 was well attended and new volunteers have joined the A/V team; several training sessions were held with active and new volunteers; the bulletin board content, scheduling, graphics quality, internal documentation and post-production editing

Association News procedures continue to be worked on; Staff and members are working together in producing short “HOA Minute” videos for broadcasting; a “Trouble Log Sheet” has been developed for the front desk to list problems reported by the residents; and the purchase of a spare ATX card is being researched for backup purposes.

Community SERVICE – On behalf of Chairperson Diane Rundles, Board Liaison Goldwasser reported the fitness center machines are fully operational; the Palomar Airport Pattern discussion has been postponed until 2016 when more information will be available; two recommendations are being presented to the Board and one for a continuing education program through UCSD was tabled for obtaining additional information.

GOLF COURSE – On behalf of Chairperson Jerry Moskovitz, Board Liaison Lopez reported that there was no report, however Golf Club members remarked that the greens are in such good shape that more people are playing golf.

LANDSCAPE – On behalf of Chairperson Sylvia Carson, Board Liaison Strohm reported that the arborist Ron Matranga will attend the Landscape Committee meeting on October 2, 2015 and provide an overview of the annual trees assessment and report on the general health of the trees; and the Committee continues to review the Master Association Landscape Specifications of the O’Connell Landscape Maintenance contract that is up for renewal in June 2016. MARKETING & COMMUNICATION – On behalf of Chairperson Christy Cooper, Board Director Landis reported the website registration continues to increase; a Message Board is being researched for posting information from residents; the Media Use Policy is almost completed for presenting to the Master Board for review; and the “cheat sheet” that highlights critical items for quick reference is being worked on for new homeowner registrations.

Association News during the summer months from 4-6:00 pm. The current Water Volleyball hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, from 3-5:00 pm during the summer months May 1 through November 1. The Swim Club members and Racquet Club president made the presentation to the CSC for consideration. There was a discussion about extending the Water Volleyball play hours through the winter months and it was the general consensus to table for future consideration.

Motion made and seconded (D. Lopez/I. Landis) as recommended by the Community Service Committee, approve Water Volleyball to play on Wednesdays during the summer months May 1-November 1 from 4:00-6:00 pm. Motion passed unanimously.

B.1.b Community Service Committee – Dog Waste Stations Along Leisure Village Way: The CSC recommended installing three (3) dog waste stations along Leisure Village Way. These would be in addition to the two (2) existing dog waste stations, one at “The Park” and the other in the Dog Park. The stations would be installed away from homes and benches, recommended locations were near Denia Way, Alicante Way and Pylos Way. There was a discussion regarding moving one of the recommended locations that is closest to the existing Dog Park station to a more evenly dispersed location. Director Goldwasser and Ellen Kippel of the Pet Lovers Club to decide on the locations.

Motion made and seconded (S. Goldwasser/I. Landis) as recommended by the Community Service Committee, to purchase three (3) doggie waste stations with a supply of bags, from Pet Waste Eliminator, for a cost not to exceed $1,200.

B.2.a Landscape Committee - Tree Pruning/Removal Request: The Landscape Committee performed inspections of trees that have been requested by homeowners to be removed or pruned. A total of three (3) trees were observed, in three (3) locations. The Landscape Committee determined there were two (2) trees that required pruning and one (1) tree that required removal.

The holiday season is fast approaching and with it, finally, a break in the warm weather. I found myself hunting for a sweater when it was only 73 degrees! A-h-h the joys of living in Southern California. However, with the cooler weather came the request from pool users to bump the heat up a degree to keep the pool temperature more comfortable for use and it has now been adjusted to 84 degrees. This will be monitored by Staff for consistency and we are making sure the pool is covered every night to prevent heat loss.

Water usage continues to be a prime consideration for the Community, especially in light of the recent citation issued by the City of Oceanside to OHCC for overwatering.

Much of the overwatering is a result of the flow of water from the rear yards that drains out to the curb. The run-off is a direct result of each individual resident’s control of their own irrigation system. Constant flow of water from the back yard to the curb can result in significant fines to the individual and to the Community. The other source of overwatering is the irrigation of lawns. Even with short run cycles and properly adjusted heads, there is still run-off from the turf areas that are irrigated by the Master, as well as the Villages. Four of the eight Villages have added check valves to prevent run-off and changed the heads. However, it is still not enough. Not only is the City monitoring this complaint, but the Metropolitan Water District and the Regional Water Board are looking to OHCC to resolve this by December 2015. It is preferable to eliminate the problem and apply any costs to a remedy rather than to paying the fines.

Please do your part to make sure you are not overwatering.

Reprogramming of your irrigation controller and checking your system for leaks are steps you can take now. The Village Presidents will be meeting in late October to discuss and develop a plan of action.

Staff has continued the effort to reduce water use by the 20% mandate but for the first time, we missed the mark in August as usage was only reduced 18%. I spoke to the City Water Dept. and they realize the excessive heat made this difficult for everyone. We had fertilized and re-seeded the golf path that was worn down to dirt during the construction on the pool. The cooler weather will make getting the reduction above 20% again much easier. However, things are going to appear drier as we also try to prevent run-off to avoid further citations.

liminary considerations that will impact the 2016/2017 budget planning. The final public presentation of the budget is normally held in early February each year in time for adoption and mail out by March.

Some additional projects that will be starting soon are the tree maintenance, asphalt management plan, and fuel modification work. The maintenance of trees now entails looking at every tree, every year to trim, remove and replant.

The Alder trees have been slowly dying off due to disease for several years all over California and the drought has also impacted the other trees to some degree. The fuel modification includes clearing of areas around the perimeter of the Community to reduce fuel for fires and this is performed every year. The Board engages a registered, consulting arborist each year to assess the health of the tree population and take steps to preserve and protect the trees which are a wonderful asset of the Community.

You may have noticed a few new faces at the Clubhouse as Paul Krenick and Jose Ramirez have recently joined the staff - new faces we hope to have join us in the pool for next year’s water volley ball match with the Residents! However, there is one familiar face I want to recognize as well. Ramon Vidrio will be celebrating 25 years with OHCC this month.

By Angela Takemoto President, Board of Directors Hello everyone! Welcome to the start of the Holiday Season!

I wanted to let you know that we have received a warning citation from the City of Oceanside Code Enforcement Division related to water runoff and excessive water coming from drains in the streets. Last month I met with some representatives from the City to discuss remedies and review their requirements. There are two different issues. One is the water that can flow onto driveways and roads when front yards or common areas are watered. The other is the water that runs out of the drains onto our Village streets, coming from Homeowners’ rear yards. Neither of these is acceptable. We will be talking about this in much more detail in November, after we have met with the Village Boards to develop a plan of action. So, in the meantime, I urge all homeowners to look at the drain outside your home, and if there

is water draining, you need to find and stop the flow of water. I realize most drain openings are shared between neighboring homes, but between you and your neighbor, this must be resolved. While this citation was a warning, if we do not make progress in resolving the problems, there will be escalating fines. And the fines could also apply to individual homeowners. So, stand by for more information.

Also we’re making progress toward the $25,000 rebate for turf removal. The December 11th deadline is looming, and there’s quite a bit of work to be done. We will review the progress at the November Board meeting.

So, here’s a recap of last month’s Board Meetings, on Monday, October 12 and Thursday, October 15.

On Monday, we heard reports from our Board Committees Don Lopez gave us the latest update from the CC&R Committee. The good news is that we met the required approval level from our mortgagees. We needed 75% and we obtained over 90%! The next step is to petition the Superior Court to allow removal of the provisions in our current documents related to the logo and compensation of directors.

Our CC&R Attorneys are working on that, and hope for a court date before the end of this year.

David Hefler reported for the Rules Review Committee.

There have been a few responses from homeowners related to the proposed changes, which the Committee will review and present to the Board at the next Board meeting.

Association News Robert Smith reported for the Storage Committee, explaining that the Committee was to meet in the next few days to prepare a scope of work for presentation to the architects for bid purposes.

Finally I reported for the Turf Removal Committee, that plans and bids had been received from Van Dyke Landscape Architects and O’Connell Landscape Maintenance. We had a couple of questions for VDLA, and expected to get them resolved quickly, so that work could proceed. Please take some time to review the article from Linda Strohm in this Newsletter, which gives you more information on this project.

In New Business, we accepted the report from PCM noting that our General Manager is current with her professional designation.

Next, David Hefler walked us through a discussion of realigning our reserves to match actual expenditures. When the Pool project was under way, all expenses were allocated against the reserve item for the pool. In reality there were a lot of expenses in sidewalks, landscape and Clubhouse area electrical, so we reduced the reserve amounts in those areas to more accurately match what happened. Our reserve analyst will be given all this information in preparation for his updated reserve study.

Next we discussed two sets of correspondence from homeowners.

After lots of discussion related to the temperature of the

water in the pool, the Board tabled this item until Thursday, to see if our Maintenance team would be able to more effectively control the pool temperature. Skipping ahead to the Thursday meeting, we did confirm that the temperature was stabilized at around 83 degrees. The Board approved setting the temperature to 84 degrees on a permanent basis.

Next was a discussion about the State mandate regarding artificial turf in HOAs. The ARC has been tasked with developing specifications and procedures related to artificial turf in front yards.

Finally, we had some discussion about priorities for this year. Our four top priorities were renovation of the Lanai, additional storage, reclaimed water, and the finalization of our CC&R Restatement process. Don Lopez walked us through several funding scenarios for major projects, including increases in assessments, special assessments, and adjusting reserve contributions to provide some funding for major projects. Nothing was decided as this was just a preliminary discussion.

On Thursday, after Staff and Committee reports, we had the Consent Calendar to approve Minutes of last month’s meeting.

Next were two recommendations from the Landscape Committee. We approved their recommendation for tree work requested by homeowners, and approved a recommended change to the Tree Maintenance Policy, to reflect our new policy of assessing all trees each year.

Association News Next we reviewed some changes recommended by the Marketing and Communication Committee, to upgrade the look of our monthly OHCC Newsletter. After some discussion, the Board approved the proposal, which will take effect in the New Year.

After that, we appointed Linda Strohm, Robert Smith and Don Lopez as members of the Clubhouse Interior Design Ad Hoc Committee.

Finally we had some discussion about Palomar Airport noise complaints. If you have a complaint, please ask the Clubhouse front desk staff, or the HOA team for a sheet which gives information on how to file a complaint.

On Monday October 12, the Board met in Executive Session. Items discussed were: Third party contracts, personnel, disciplinary hearings, potential litigation, delinquency review, legal opinions, Executive Committee reports, and approval of minutes of prior Executive Sessions.

Contracts approved at that meeting were: Renewal of the retainer agreement with Fiore Racobs and Powers, our Legal Counsel. The annual amount is $1,800, the same as last year.

Approval of the Management contracts with all eight Villages. There is no financial liability to either the Master Association or the Village Associations.

Approval of the proposal from O’Connell Landscape Maintenance to carry out annual tree trimming and removal

Approval of a proposal from Atlas Environmental Services to oversee the annual tree work, in an amount not to exceed $4,340.

Approval of a proposal from Michael Baker International to perform hydrology studies in areas of the Community which could be subject to flooding during heavy rain. The contract is not to exceed $4,000.

Approval of a proposal from O’Connell Landscape Maintenance to perform services in support of the turf removal, including killing and removing the turf, preparing the soil, and planting according to the plan developed by Van Dyke Landscape Architects. The plan includes a short walking path in the area adjacent to Aeolia. This was approved in an amount not to exceed $75,000.

Approval of two proposals from Associated Engineering Consultants, the company which prepared the new 8-year Pavement Management Plan (PMP) for the Community.

First, to prepare final plans and bidding documents for the 2016 portion of the PMP. This is in an amount of $4,460. Second, to provide Construction Management and inspection during the execution of the 2016 portion of the PMP. This is an amount of $6,500. The Board also added $1,200 for material testing, to ensure a quality product.

Garage Parking STREET AND DRIVEWAY PARKING RESTRICTED OVERNIGHT Overnight Parking by Residents Every garage and carport on a property must be occupied by resident-owned, motorized, decaled vehicles to the full extent of their original designed capacity before a driveway parking permit may be issued by the Director of Community Patrol Service for another vehicle. The decision of the Director regarding compliance with this requirement may be reviewed by the DHC. By accepting a driveway or street parking permit from the Association, every resident must consent to Association inspections of your garage/carport to confirm the same is used to the full extent of its original design capacity for vehicle parking. Any resident who refuses the Association access for inspection, will be subject to revocation of the driveway/street parking permit.

Turf Removal 2015

Early this summer OHCC applied for grant monies from the City of Oceanside to be used to replace turf with plants that require much less water. The maximum dollars allowed this year is one dollar per square foot, not to exceed $25,000.

Our request was approved and the Master Board, working with Van Dyke Landscape Architects and O’Connell Landscape Maintenance, identified several areas that would meet the 25,000 sq. ft. allowance. Once that was done, O’Connell mixed up their magic grass killer and went to work! The dead grass has been mowed and the installation of the new irrigation system has begun. The project will be completed by early December.

The selected spaces are the strip between the two Arcadias, the Aeolia ‘wedge’, the area just north of Aeolia and the strip across from the end of Andros. The Aeolia ‘wedge’ will have a walking path. The plants that will be added are low water users and very colorful. They are: agave weberi; bougainvillea (La Jolla), Yankee point ceanothus, orchid rock rose, furcraea foetida ‘mediopicta’, new gold lantana, Tuscan blue rosemary, dwarf coyote bush, several varieties of salvias, and mundi westringia. The work will be completed in early December. What a nice Holiday Present!

Ant and rodent control within a homeowner’s yard is the responsibility of the homeowner. However, one bait station per home is provided in the common area, either in front or back of the property. If you need the name of a reliable pest company, please contact the HOA Office for a vendor list.

Street sweeping is done on the first Tuesday of every month. Be sure your cars are off the street by 8:00 a.m.! If you have guests, please have them park in the driveway for that one day.

Are there any changes to your status? If/when you have renters that move in or out, there is a death , you buy/sell a car, a new/different phone number, please notify the HOA Office! Remember if you sell your car, the transponder needs to be deactivated!

Moving? - either out of or within OHCC, please complete the Moving Form (available in this publication) and bring it to the HOA Office. It is mandatory, and in your best interest, that the HOA maintain current records of our residents. If you have had ANY changes in your status, please contact the HOA office. Does the Post Office have your correct forwarding address?

RV & Trailer Registration: Please take your request to the Front Gate and speak to the Director of Community Patrol, Len Weinstein.

Bring your valid driver’s license, current registration, and proof of insurance. He will assign a space, if one is available, and direct you to the HOA Office to complete the registration process.

Car & Golf Cart Registration is done at the HOA Office. Car: provide current driver’s license, temporary DMV registration, and insurance. Golf Cart: provide Bill of Sale/Proof of Ownership,and current insurance.

Signs have been put up next to the entry gate to each Tennis Court and Pickle Ball Court, that show your exact location should you need to call in an emergency to 911. Please take a moment to locate them the next time you are there!

Carbon Monoxide Detectors are the homeowner’s responsibility, and are not connected to the Emergency Monitoring System. If you have questions about this, please contact the Director of Community Patrol Services, Len Weinstein 760-758-7111.

Emergency Monitoring System (EMS) equipment in each of the residences must remain in the home. It may it be altered in any fashion. Any damage to the system caused by accident, misuse or attempted unauthorized repair or modification is at the homeowner’s expense.

Director of Community Patrol Service (CPS) Hello residents of Ocean Hills Country Club: What do unwanted visitors (squirrels, rabbits, rodents, dogs, coyotes, extra dust in your home, to name a few) have in common? The answer: your open garage door. Recently, we’ve seen an increase in coyotes in our community. An open garage door, especially during the approaching cooler nights, is an invitation. Please check your garage door before retiring for the night.

Daylight Savings Time (DST) ends on Sunday, November 1st. Remember to turn back your clocks, timers, watches, etc. before retiring. This is also a good time to replace batteries in all your battery powered devices.

The holiday season is fast approaching; are you ready? planning, cleaning, cooking, baking and, of course, eating.

With family and friends visiting, the Cannon Road gate gets very busy. The lines get long and having to call you makes the lines longer and slower moving. Please call ahead to allow your family and friends to easily enter. This will be appreciated by all. You can use the dwellingLive system to enter your guests or call the front gate. With the holiday traffic, please do this ahead of time.

From time to time, residents have inquired as to how secure the password assigned to their home is, given that it has been in place for previous owner(s) and/or tenants. In conjunction with your Master Board and the HOA, a process in place for some time now, is available to change your password. Anyone interested should contact me, at the front gate, for a review of this process.

Landscape Committee How About a little Color with That?

Now that you’ve gotten some of those wonderful succulents in your yard, how would you like some extra color?

There are a number of water-wise plants that you can weave into your yards that would add interest and diversity.

Look at these varieties: for pinks- Rockrose, Western Rosebud, Trailing African Daisy, and Grevillea. For lavender check out Texas Ranger, Rosemary, Japanese Wisteria, Verbena, Spanish Lavender, Butterfly Bush and French Lavender. Coprosma or Mirror Plant can add interesting color and texture. Lantana in red, orange, yellow and lavender are available. Flowering trees can add color to your garden: Crepe Myrtle, Chinese Pistache, and Strawberry Tree.

The San Diego Botanical Gardens in Encinitas has a section devoted to water-wise gardening and is well worth a visit. November begins with our Veteran’s Day Event on Wednesday, November 11 at 11 am in Abravanel Hall. Donna Russell has, again, put this program together with the help of the Garden Club members, Rancho Buena Vista High School, AV, and the many volunteers. We are so appreciative to Donna for her organizing efforts and to all of those who have served our country.We hope to ‘pack the house’, so please plan on arriving early as parking will be limited.

The Arts and Crafts Faire is happening on Saturday, November 21 from 11 am to 4 pm. Residents will combine their efforts to display a variety of jewelry, gifts, handmade items and other art for sale. Cousins Maine Lobster Food Truck will be located in the Clubhouse Parking Lot to buy lunch and dinner, if that be your fancy. So walk on up to the window and place an order for a Maine Lobster Roll or a bowl of New England Clam ‘Chowda,’ and do a little shopping, the Clubhouse will be hosting over 28 vendors, so bring your wallet.

With the holidays just around the corner, the Woodchucks are holding their annual Toy Drive which begins Monday, November 23. Please support this worthwhile project so that children at Camp Pendleton will have a wonderful and memorable holiday with their families. The Toy Drive runs until December 12, remember the teenagers, as they are the toughest to shop for and sometimes need the most encouragement. Years ago the toys were not picked up at the Clubhouse as scheduled, and after making several calls the Salvation Army said they did not have enough to meet the need. The staff loaded their cars and the toys were all delivered in the nick of time for an event that night, for

over 100 families at the Lake Drive address just around the corner. Experiences like that just tickle your insides!

The Clubhouse holiday trees will be ordered and put on display by December 1st. There will be back to back programming as we facilitate over 20 big events. The Choral Society Program on Sunday, December 13 at 2pm is one not to miss, mark your calendar. See the Choral Society section for more details. This year the Recreation Department and “2nd Strings”, a resident musical group will come together for a sing-a-long and an “Ugly Sweater Contest” with prizes, so save the date of Thursday, December 18 at 3 pm.

Pet Waste Stations have been installed along Leisure Village Way in three locations. The Community Services Committee made a recommendation to the Master Board and it was approved. Pets are allowed on Leisure Village Way Loop but are not permitted on the Clubhouse grounds.

The Recreation Department welcomes Jose Ramirez on Facilities. He is working the pm shift during the week. Jose is the father of 5, enjoys playing soccer and going camping.

He also enjoys working with people, so say “hello” as he carries out his daily duties.

Submissions are to be about 500 words and this writer is heading to her finish line.Make a point to get involved, come to Nubees, plan on attending Do Dues Day (January 9, 2016), making friends is easy but they won’t come to your front door and ring the bell.

“It’s a Guy Thing!” The new Art Room installation features a variety of art from our prolific men artists, ranging from detailed black/white pencil drawings, to a dramatic acrylic of a lion’s head, to delicate brush strokes of Chinese art, to a very interesting photography technique. The featured artists are: Bud DeMaris, Joe Francis, Carlos Huerta, Carl Mikeman, Larry Roberson, and Bob Wong. Each artist brings his own style and the amazing, wonderful result is a combined display of contrasts in color, texture and style. It’s a Must See! Be sure to take a look at the info in the plastic pocket mounted on the slat board, which gives a little background on each artist and insight to their art. There’s also a brochure explaining the technique used to produce the colorful, moody photography. Come check out “It’s a Guy Thing!”

Stained Glass Class Christmas and Hanukkah Decorations from Stained Glass

New classes in stained glass will focus on a wide variety of Christmas decorations (grandkids love them).

Different classes will be held for beginners and for those with some training in glass making.

The last meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at the Jolly Roger Restaurant in Oceanside Harbor. The no host social will begin at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:30 pm. ART LOVERS

On November 17 the Art Lovers Club will travel north. Our first stop will be for lunch at the White House Restaurant in Anaheim. This beautiful restaurant,built in 1909 as a residence, is now a historical landmark. Its renowned chef, Bruno Serato, is not just known for his fine cuisine. His philanthropic work includes providing 1,000 meals each week to homeless children. He was one of CNN’s top 10 Heroes in 2011.

After lunch we will travel to the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. Our docent tour will include: Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art featuring 17 Japanese artists whose work represents current trends in this difficult art form. The Red That Colored The World traces the influence of the cochineal red dye, first discovered by Spanish explorers in 16th C Mexico, on the art of Mexico, Europe and the US. A workby El Greco is included in this exhibit.Adams, Curtis and Weston: Photographs of the American West features the work of these 3 renowned American photographers.

BALLROOM DANCE

Join us as we dance to a live Band from 7­10 pm. Cost of our dances is $8 per member and $10 per non­member. Leave your checks (made out to the OH Ballroom Dance Club) in the Ballroom Dance Club envelope at the Front Desk no later than the Monday preceding the Dance. For seating assignments, come to the Clubhouse Concierge Desk at 3 pm on the day of the dance. Table selections are made by drawing ­first for tables of 10, then 8, and so on. Club’s Annual Meeting: At the Club’s annual meeting on October 7, the following were elected Officers for 2016: President: Debbie Machnick; Vice­President: Connie Perkins; Secretary: Kathryn Fitzwilliam; Treasurer: Phyllis Buvel. November Dance: Our next dance is on November 13 and we look forward to an evening of friends, music, and dancing. Our Band will be Musicstation ­a Club favorite with top ratings from our members. No January Dance: An important change was made in the schedule of dances. The Board of Directors voted to cancel the January dance as this occurs so close to the holiday season with all its parties and celebrations. The first dance will be on February 12 and we are planning a great dance to open the year. Stay tuned.

Wednesday Beginner/Intermediate Dance Lessons (free): Lessons are in Abravanel Hall and open to all residents. Our instructors will teach a single dance for 4­6 weeks and then begin another dance. At this writing, the lesson will be one of the Latin dances ­either the Rumba or the ChaCha which share many common patterns. Beginner lessons start at 2:00 PM; Intermediate lessons at 2:40 PM; and Intermediate/Advanced (Monday dancers) practice at 3:20 PM. Single persons are welcome as we encourage our experienced dancers to attend and interact with participants. Members are notified by e­mail of any changes to the schedule.

Monday Dance Lessons and Workshops: These lessons and workshops are in Abravanel Hall every Monday from 4:00 ­5:00 PM and open to all residents. Classes give partic-

ipants a chance to learn new dances and/or advanced levels in core dances. We’ll generally alternate between professional instruction (attendees pay a small fee per lesson) for a number of weeks and then in­house directed review workshops (no cost). At this writing, professional lessons are being conducted in the Hustle for Intermediate/Advanced level dancers but will likely introduce another dance in the mix. Lessons are $5 per lesson per member and $7 for non­ members. Members will be notified by e­mail with current information.

BILLIARDS CLUB

The Billiards Room continues to be a busy place. We again have had days when all the pocket billiard tables were in use. This can make it a raucous time with people exclaiming “Oh no” or speaking French when he or she missed a shot. We have had further lessons and one of our monthly tournaments.

Charlie Payne gave a lesson on “Spot Shots.” This shows all the many different ways to pocket a ball which is placed on the head spot. Two are shot angles directly into a pocket. The remaining nine require one or more bank shots to go into a particular pocket. Charlie demonstrated all of them.

We had a Billiards Golf Tournament on September 24.

There were 11 entrants, four of which played at the final table. To get to the final, there were three tables with three players each and one table with two players. A handicap was established where a “B” player only had to get to the fourth “hole” while the “A” player had to get to the sixth hole to win.

The first table found Charlie Payne, Keith Bogost and Kathy Thornton playing for a lengthy 80 minutes before Keith finally won. The second table had John Mitchell, Royden Jones and Hazel Bobach with John winning in about 30 minutes. The third table with Ken Rose, Cal Roe and Ursel Jones was over in about 20 minutes with Ken making great shots. The fourth table was between Ralph DiTursi and Jeanne Marks. Jeanne missed her winning shot which, unfortunately ,left the cue ball for Ralph to take the win.

The final table was between Keith Bogost (the only “B” player), John Mitchell, Ken Rose, and Ralph DiTursi. Ken and John moved into the lead and defense became the game strategy. With Keith’s ball next to his winning fourth pocket, Ken was determined to knock Keith out of the fourth pocket area. Unfortunately, he ended up hitting Keith’s ball into the fourth pocket which made Keith the winner.

We look forward to seeing you in the pool room. Keep a smooth stroke.

BIRDWATCHERS

The last meeting for the year in October ended with a party with great food, fun, entertainment by Helen Sloan and Renee Kelson, prizes, and memories. A big “Thank You” to Ann Mulvey and her helpers for organizing the party. Our elected Board members for 2016 are: Joan Comito-President, Skip Harvey-Vice President, Sylvia Carson-Treasurer, Tim Pentel-Secretary, along with Dick Cook as Director of Membership. Thanks to them for volunteering to keep our Club going.

Two Bird walks remain for this year, this month and December. The walk this month, Tuesday, November 10, will be to San Elijo Lagoon that was changed from the original schedule. We are lucky to have Jack Friery as our docent for the morning to help us identify the shorebirds and ducks that are migrating south this time of year. Jack is a docent at Torrey Pines and has led many walks to the local lagoons and birding areas in North County. Meet at the overflow lot by 7:45 am for departure at 8am.

Our first stop will be at the Education Center on Manchester Avenue to walk the flat trail along the channel, use the facilities, and view the displays inside the building.

Then we will drive to Lomas Santa Fe, turn down Rios Avenue and park at the cul-de-sac at the other end of the lagoon.

There is a flat trail with benches for those who cannot manage a slight down-hill path. There is no shade and trails

Clubs and Activities are sandy, so wear sturdy shoes. Bring hat, water, and walking stick if you usually use one. There are no facilities on this side. After the walk the group usually goes to Burgers and Brew nearby for lunch.

Bring your own meat to grill and choice of drink. A dish to share with 12 or so hungry friends rounds out a fun time at the bocce courts.

BRIDGE THURSDAY NIGHT PARTY

Every Thursday at 6 pm we meet for a fun-filled evening of bridge and snacks. Bring a partner and ante up $1 each towards the prize pool. What we don’t give away in prize money pays for our cookies and coffee. We’re a friendly bunch and welcome all intermediate players. Join us any Thursday in Abravanel Hall. Bridge begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

CHORAL SOCIETY

The holidays are getting closer and closer and our Chorale is working very hard in preparation for our December Concert! We only have 5 rehearsals left!

We are already getting compliments from the sound heard in the Galleria coming from our Chorale! The men’s voices are strong and the blend with the women is as good as it gets! We are all getting “goose bumps” on some songs and chords! We have 54 active members for our December Concert and have set another record! We are looking forward to not only sounding great but looking great! We already have our plan in place to “fit on the stage!”

day, December 13 at 2 pm this year and what would our Holiday Concert be without our annual raffle? This will be the 6th year for our annual fundraising raffle and you all know what wonderful gifts we have for you. We have some new songs and arrangements that we are all enjoying and yes, we will be doing Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus! The entire Chorale loves singing this version and hope you all will enjoy it as well! Our two Hawaiian Dancers will again be joining us, as well as four other dancers! We always have a couple of new surprises for you and we think you are going to like what you see (and hear)!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS — THE NOVEMBER GENERAL MEETING IS NOVEMBER 18! Since Veteran’s Day falls on the 2nd Wednesday this year, our meeting day had to be changed.

The holidays are around the corner. Are you looking for some new floral ideas for your festivities? You won’t want to miss the November 18 meeting. David Root a fabulous floral designer will demonstrate and inspire us to new heights.

David’s career as a floral designer was a natural outgrowth of his 11 years as a hair designer.In 1990, his creative instincts spontaneously led him to become one of the hundreds of volunteers, known as “petal pushers,” who work on the spectacular floats in Pasadena’s Rose Parade. Since that time, his talent and subsequent widespread recognition in the floral industry have literally bloomed.

Placing second in his first design competition Root’s imaginative ideas and unique creations have captured more

Mark your calendars for our Christmas Lunch and Fashion Show on December 9. We’re sure you will enjoy this event. More details will be forthcoming.

The rains are coming (or so they say) so now is the time to prepare your garden and your plants. Clean out your rain gutters and downspouts so heavy rains don’t overflow and flood. Empty out any containers that fill up with the rains (use the water in your garden!) and turn them upside down or put lids on so you don’t create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. If you know where water runs off your roof so you can collect it when the rains stop falling again, keep your containers handy for placement when the time comes. Every little bit helps!

Also, succulents do best in the cold months if they are kept on the dry side, but still need occasional watering when they look stressed or shriveled. To avoid succulents from get-

ting waterlogged, move them to a protected area like under your eaves. They will get enough moisture from the air. Remember to turn off your sprinklers when it starts raining!

I begin in March on St Patrick’s Day, June on Father’s Day, September on Labor Day and after Thanksgiving Day in November. Give a double dose in November.

Feed roses for fall bloom with half cup of blood and bone meal and a quarter cup of kelp meal. Also, give ironite according to directions. Stop feeding cymbidiums the high nitrogen food and change to 1-10-10 or 2-10-10. Take cuttings from your favorite begonias and start them using Rootone.

Feed ferns with high nitrogen food.

It is time to dig and store cannas, dahlias and gladiolas or you may leave them in and take your chances. Plant sweet peas (soak them overnight) and other spring flowering bulbs. The rule of thumb for planting bulbs is to plant them three times their size deep. After planting the bulbs

We are purchasing as many new books as usual, but suddenly the Library is looking more bare, particularly the open shelves.

You may be saying “Who is Poperazzi?” (That is OPERA with a Pop!) This group has been dazzling audiences around the world. The show highlights three singers and each in their own right are “stars.” They have an opera background but they sing PopOpera such as ‘Quando, Quando, Quando’ as well as Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, Jersey Boys Medley, Louis Prima Medley, and so much more.They are very personable and you can be sure they will be “in the audience!”

Come and join with us for our last regular NuBee’s social of 2015. As we all know one of the best ways to get to know your new neighbors and your soon to be new friends is to come to our NuBee’s gatherings on the third (3rd) Monday evening of each month. We meet from 5:30pm to about 7:30 pm.

Our calendar and meeting location for the remainder 2015 is: November 16, Abravanel Hall We ask that you bring a HEARTY appetizer or other dish you like to prepare or eat (hot or cold) for 10-12 people and your own beverage to share with your neighbors and friends.

Water, ice, flatware, plates, napkins and cups will be provided. We will also have sign-up sheets there to give everyone an opportunity to help out by guest-hosting one month. Our guest hosts are asked to bring a dessert that will accommodate 10-12 people. Our guest hosts for November are Willie and Kay Sernisi. We have a core group of regular volunteers, Holly Radziwon, her sister Goldie Weiss and Bill Vogel. We also ask for a small monthly donation to cover the expense of our paper goods. Bring a friend or a new neighbor. Make sure that we have your correct email. PET LOVERS CLUB

Ellen Kippel, President, would like to remind all members of the Pet Lovers Club that our General meeting (election of new officers) is scheduled for 10 am Saturday, November 4.

Good news for all Dog owners. The OHCC BOD has approved 3 Doggie Waste Stations that will be placed along Leisure Village Drive. Look for Waste Stations in the very near future.

A big thank you to Sandy, Adrian, Fernando and Ellen for helping out a dog that got loose from its sitter and walked 2 miles to our Clubhouse. They kept the dog in the office at the Clubhouse until his pet sitter was located through his micro-chip. His owner was vacationing in Paris, France.

We keep having a reoccurring situation in OHCC where pets get loose and have no ID. We write about this almost every month. Pets need to have a tag that has their name, owner’s name, address and telephone number. It is also a good idea to have your pet micro-chipped.

The Pet Lovers BOD would like to remind residents that Sunny Frowein (resident) co-ordinates donations for FREEDOM DOGS which is a non-profit organization that trains Service Dogs to work with troops returning from armed combat with PTSD and physical limitations. Call Sunny at 760-630-6304 for information on how you can donate to this worthwhile endeavor.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB SHOW AND TELL

Remember how excited you were when you could take that special item into the classroom and show it to others? Let’s try to recapture that feeling by submitting to Bud 5-10 of your very favorite photos to share at our November 19 meeting in the Ladies Club Room at 1pm. Maybe you had more than 5 “Animal” pictures you would have liked to submit. This would be a great chance to

We have had a Canon S110 camera generously donated to the club for auctioning off at this meeting.

RACQUET CLUB

On Wednesday, September 23, our first “Wednesday” water volleyball game was held.

This additional “game day” was approved by the Community Services Committee (CSC) and the Master Board on a trial basis, to be reconsidered again after November 1.

Nineteen very happy players showed up to play on this first Wednesday session. Water volleyball has become a very popular pastime every Monday and Friday afternoons from 3-5 pm–in fact, you’ve never seen a more enthusiastic crowd in our pool! They are thrilled to be able to play a third weekday each week!

On Tuesday night, September 29, a paddle tennis mixer was held under the lights at our Clubhouse courts. Seventeen players participated with another five cheering the players on. No game schedule for competition, winners, or prizes were part of the plan–just our paddle tennis players having fun, playing their hearts out, and then sharing “root beer floats” after the play was over. Pickleball may have been dominating the news lately at Ocean Hills, but there are still plenty of us who love the game of paddle tennis. We are so thankful to have Paul Yoshida’s ingenious invention of our easily adaptable net systems to either paddle tennis or pickleball within just a minute or two! Thank you Paul! And thank you Allan Singer, Gerry Livsey, and Dannica Wood for heading up this final paddle tennis event of 2015!

A “tennis mixer” will be held on Thursday, November 12, at 9 am. All four tennis courts will be used to bring Ocean Hills tennis players together in an informal playing format.

It’s been a long while since an event like this has been held on our courts, and with a number of new resident players, Judy Gagnon and Val Davis thought it was a great idea to bring players together.

Clubs and Activities Patty Coffey has been thanked many times over by her tennis students “with happy feet”– ‘cause they know she makes them move on the court! In the past four lessons they reviewed forehands, backhands, volleys, and serve–and will finish with “return of serve.” They will finish with “return of serve” review, and using the ball machine. Her lessons were a wonderfully positive experience for tennis players wanting to get back in the game–student Philip Brailsford has even been asked to sub in a tennis foursome! Patty’s classes are winding down for the holidays and will start back in January. Come join the fun! And “thank you Patty” for spending your time and energy to help our tennis players!

Tickets went on sale on October 2 for the annual Sailing and Racquet Clubs “Winter Wonderland 2015 Holiday Dinner-Dance” to be held on December 12. The Sailing Club is in charge this year, and the event sold out in just minutes.

Interested parties should add their name to the waiting list in the Sailing Club folder at the Front Desk. Our thanks go out to all Sailing and Racquet Club members who are volunteering to make this event a big success enjoyed by so many here in OHCC.

RV CLUB

It’s Turkey month already and close to the end of a great year of RV trips. Members are back from two weeks of festivals -WINE and MUSIC. We surely contributed greatly to the Paso Robles economy (not to mention our own happy dispositions) with our mega-multiple wine tastings. And who would have guessed that Pismo Beach would be rockin’ with such musical sounds. Thanks to wagon masters, Mathews, Kirk, Whites, Whitsons and Trembleys, and members for two memorable weeks on the road.

Depending upon release of this publication members are eagerly anticipating or participating in the outing at Newport Dunes ,relaxing (wining and dining) on a luxury yacht, golfing, or feasting on an early Thanksgiving dinner make for a fun five days.

Thanks to Storms and Peppes for putting it all together.

We welcome in the holiday season and have our final social (of course, everything we do is social) event of 2015, with our annual Progressive Cocktail and Appetizer Night, December 8. Jan Lopez and committee are busy planning a fun evening for what has become a very popular tradition. Members, please stick with the order of the homes you visit (given to you at the November meeting) or you will be persona non grata and very thirsty. Attendance is limited, so check with Jan if you have not signed up.

Clubs and Activities we head to Palm Desert, January 6-11 for 5 days of golf, happy hours, optional touring, and, of course, good food. Check with the Malones for further info.

Moving into February, Ross Robison is setting up a camp-out on Del Mar Beach in Camp Pendleton, February 17-19. Sites are paved with water, sewer, electric, but no TV. So we will just kick back and, perhaps, listen to all the boom-boom going on.

Joann Bush and Bill Beckley and Sandy and Skip Harvey are heading up the trip to beautiful and scenic Sedona, April 18 - 24.

So much to see and do on this trip. But, bring a pillow for the jeep ride and hang on! There may be some cancellations so check with wagon masters for a wait list.

Talk about planning ahead for a great trip, the Utah Grand Circle Trip, September 12-21 is filling up fast due to securing high priority RV sites. This trip is 10 months away, so hang in there as cancellations could happen. Barbara and Bill Becker head this one along with the Gayverts and Mel and Jan Feintuch as WOW coordinators.

SAILING CLUB

At its October meeting, the Sailing Club elected officers for 2016. They are: Commodore, Bob Kopolow; Vice-Commodore, Allan Paloutzian; Secretary, Sally Booth; Treasurer, Evy Sanfilippo; and Fleet Captain, Forrest Newburg. Thanks to these club members for their willingness to serve, and thanks to Daniel Sansoni, who chaired the Nominating Committee. The program for the meeting was a slide show of the visit to the hovercraft facility at Camp Pendleton in August. It was announced at the meeting that Club membership is now 261, a new record. Do Dues Day will be on Saturday, January 9.

Ticket sales for the annual Sailing Club/Racquet Club Holiday Party took place on October 2. Tickets were sold out within minutes. There is a waiting list with over 2 dozen names. Commodore Paloutzian apologized to those who were unable to get tickets and are on the waiting list. NOTE: Persons having tickets who need to cancel must turn them in to the Club to go to someone on the waiting list. They CANNOT be resold or given away!

Fall in San Diego is still a delightful time to go sailing.

Three captains took boats out in September and signups were started at the meeting for three day sails in October.

The best way to get on the list to sail is to sign up at the monthly meetings. If you miss the meeting, check either the Club website or the Sailing Club folder at the Clubhouse Front Desk to see which captain is taking out a boat, and on which date. The Sailing Club website contains a link that informs users about future sails and allows you to sign up or add your name to the waiting list. If the boat is not full, add your name to the list and put a check for $45 in the Sailing Club check envelope at the Clubhouse Front Desk to be added to the sail. Priority goes to those who place their checks in the Sailing Club envelope earliest. Remember that sailing can be hazardous and that, if you are unable to climb onboard the boat with your belongings or go up and down a steep ladder without help, you should not sign up for sailing.

See us at our next meeting on November 3 to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks, and to sign up for upcoming sails.

Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the business meeting

begins at 7:30 pm. And don’t forget your checkbooks and name tags.

SENIOR FITNESS CLUB

The Senior Fitness Club meets Tuesdays at 1 pm and Thursdays at 11 am in Abravanel Hall.

The annual dues are $5 and the class fee is $3 per class.

The classes consist of low-impact exercise, including balance and coordination, flexibility and range of motion, stretching and strengthening. Come on down and join us!

Instructor, Carl Grubbs, is a Senior Fitness Coach who has taught Senior Fitness classes at OHCC and other locations for over 12 years. He has won numerous medals in the Senior Olympics.

Clubs and Activities Doesn’t time go by fast? We are wrapping up another year of sewing arts and crafts as well as starting to get ready for 2016. I have our normal schedule listed above but the rest of the year is not normal. In November we will have our regular general meeting on 5th and the idea for that meeting is to discuss projects we would like to do in the upcoming year. This year some of our projects took longer than one meeting to complete so we had only one project for that month but generally we plan on two a month. Personally I really liked having two meetings to finish a project, it means we can tackle more complicated things - or maybe it’s just that I’m slow. So bring ideas of things to make. It can be something you have seen on line or at a craft fair or perhaps even an idea of something you need and have not seen a pattern for. At the general meeting we will also get more information on our November 19 project.

December does not have a scheduled general meeting or any of the Thursday meetings however Kathy says that the Saturday Sew In is still on because there will probably be a lot of gifts to finish.

The Card Making group is really busy. One of the interesting things they are doing is a card exchange, like a cookie exchange. The participants each make 14 identical cards then share them out with each person going home with 14 different cards. The group has been so successful that they need to have people sign up ahead and each class has a set number of students. Irma Ojeda was in charge of the signups for October so she will know about the classes, where they are being held and how many students the instructor can take. In November, our meeting will feature the song stylings of Michael Ruhl. He has traveled the world as a featured vocalist with Holland-American Cruise Lines. Michael has performed at the American Cinema Awards honoring Kirk Douglas and Sophia Loren, and has performed with such stars has Andy Williams, Burt Convy, and toured in the preBroadway production of Man of La Mancha with Sheena Easton and Raul Julia. Other local credits include the Welk Resort Theatre, Starlight Musical Theatre.

Baba the Storyteller has been a professional speaker since 1994 and is one of the few recognized U.S. born practitioners of the ancient West African storytelling craft known as Jaliyaa. He has received numerous awards over the years for his work as a folklorist, traditional harpist, storyteller, community activist and volunteer.

Our current activities are shown below: November 9- Annual Travel Feast & Installation Banquet - $20 for members, $25 for guests.There’s still time to sign up for our Annual Dinner. Our theme this year is “African Safari.” Entrée selections are Stuffed Mediterranean Chicken, Maui Mahi Mahi, and Flame Broiled TriTip Sirloin. Choice of Black Forest Cake or Apple Pie a la Mode. What a great line dance party we had in October with almost 90 members and guests dancing the night away after a wonderful catered dinner. They were approved unanimously. A big thank you to Clarice Holness and Fran Ainis our outgoing 2015 Vice President and Sunshine Lady for their service to our club this past year. Don’t forget Do Dues Day on January 9, 2016, 10 am-2 pm. Our club dues will remain $7 for 2016. Those wanting to join line dancing in November or December 2015, can also do so for $7 and it will carry over to pay dues for 2016. That is 14 months for the price of 12. Checks should be made out to Village Line Dancers.

The following is the dance schedule for November: • Mondays from 12:30-2 pm, Level 1 students. These classes are intended for those with some line dancing experience. The classes, taught by Christine, are offered for $5 per session.

• Tuesdays from 10:30 am to 12 noon, Level 2 students. These are our most advanced classes taught by Christine. These classes are also $5 per session.

• Thursdays, 12:30-1:30 pm, Introductory Classes taught

by Christine for new line dance students. These classes are offered for $4 per session. No class on Thanksgiving, November 26.

• Mondays from 2-3:30 pm, Review Classes taught by Betty Heyer. Betty is our dedicated and talented resident who teaches review classes for those with experience in Level 1 and Level 2 dances. Her review classes for members are offered at no charge.

VILLAGE SQUARES

Applause, congratulations and kudos to our graduating class of 2015. The following students: Pete and Martha Cannon, Lauretta Hartzell, Bunny Quint, Hiro Kumasaka and Johnny Castro completed all the requirements of both Mainstream and Plus Square Dancing. The graduation ceremony on November 4 will be a festive affair with the traditional rites of passage and even a quirky square dance exam.

We are all preparing for the holiday season with a wonderful party on December 2 (5-8:30 pm)catered by Bobby’s Hideaway. It will be a traditional meal with ham, sides and a medley of desserts. January is an exciting month for Village Squares with Do Dues Day on Saturday, January 9, our Open house on Wednesday, January 13, and new Tuesday classes starting January 19. We look forward to introducing square dancing to the members of Ocean Hills Community and starting new classes in 2016.

The Village Squares Club will continue with Tuesday classes (3-5 pm), Club Dances on Wednesdays (6:30-8:30pm) and Verl’s review on Thursday (9-10 am).

VILLAGE VETS

The Veterans Club of Ocean Hills invites you to join family, friends and neighbors as we celebrate Veterans’ Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 11 am in Abravanel Hall. Doors will open at 10:30 am.

This day was set aside to honor our military and the job they have done to keep our nation “land of the free and home of the brave.” It is a time set aside to show our appreciation and to give thanks from a grateful nation to these brave men and women for their service, our freedom and often great sacrifice.

This year we will be thanking all of our veterans and we are so proud to have all of you in our village. We will be highlighting the second oldest service – U.S. Navy. Our keynote speaker spent 30 years in the Navy and flew 70 missions during Korea and 110 missions during Vietnam. He has too many Combat Awards to mention BUT you will want to hear how he was attacked by 7 Soviet MIG-15s during the Korean War, managed to get 3 of them and then landed his crippled Panther back on a carrier! He had to personally tell his experience to President Eisenhower! During his career, he has many other interesting duties such as Director POW/MIA Matters, USS Pueblo capture and C-131 shoot-down.

Clubs and Activities very special “quartet” made up of very young girls who will be singing the National Anthem a cappella for you. The Garden Club again is sponsoring our traditional floral wreath and Bob Wong will be putting his magic touches on the wreath and we all know that it will be better than the one at Arlington National Cemetery...it always has been! There is more...let us all show every Veteran how much we care and how thankful we are of their service.

Refreshments will be served by the Recreation Department on the Palm Court after the program and you will have an opportunity to “meet and greet” with the band members, our guest speaker and guests.

WALKERS AND HIKERS

The Hikers and Walkers will by traveling to Palomar Mountain to hike the Scott’s Cabin and Boucher Loop Trails on Friday, November 6.

On Thursday, November 19, the Walkers and Hikers will be hiking Mt. Woodson-East.

Both of these hikes are rated as moderate. As usual, we will be stopping for lunch after the hikes.

If you decide to join us for either of the two hikes, for personal comfort and safety, don’t forget to bring water, good sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat on any of our hikes. For all hikes, even easy ones, these four items are highly recommended. All four items are important, but on warm sunny days, of which we have abundance, water and a hat become even more crucial.

All of our hikes start at the Overflow Parking Lot where we meet at 8:30 am and carpool to the trail head. Remember to help out the driver with some gas money if you are in a carpool.

Clubs and Activities Many changes and upgrades are in the works for next year. Email will be used a lot more to keep members in the loop. We are very pleased with our new Associa/PCM maintenance person “Gary Allman” who understands woodworking to the fullest.

We have been getting quite a few new members who are still getting used to the shop. It takes time and we remind them that signing in upon entering is important.

There are over one hundred members in the club and it takes a lot of work keeping everything running smoothly. This happens when the equipment is used properly. The table saw is a good example. When you are finished with your project, put the blade down out of the way and lift the fence lever and clean up for the next person. This procedure should be followed on all the machines.

We emphasize that if you do not know how to do a procedure just ask someone to help that does know how. There is no room for error.

Treat everything like it is your own because it really is yours too.

The last meeting of the year will be on December 10. A lot will be happening because the arrangements for toys to be delivered to Pendleton plus new officers will be announced and much more. Please mark your calendar now.

We are also working on a guest speaker who can enlighten your knowledge on a subject that is becoming a forefront in everybody’s life.

Keep the cans and bottles coming and support your club.

YIDDISH CLUB

Chai, Yiddish Clubbers! We will not be meeting in November, but eagerly look forward to our next gathering, the Yiddish Club Deli Luncheon on December 20 at 11:30 am. We’ll be in contact with you via email (in December) with a flyer so that you can fill out the tear-off sheet and give it, along with your check, directly to the Front Desk. We’ll assign tables, then, as the checks come in. Delicious deli will be schlepped down here in a refrigerated truck (so, how else?) all the way from Katella Deli. Seating will be 10 per table, with the food served family style. We will be entertained by the lovely pianist, Jacqui Silver, and we expect the event to be very enjoyable… a bissel fressing, a bissel schmoozing, and a bissel toe-tapping! Priced very reasonably: $25 for members, $30 for guests. So, please mark your calendar now to save the date.
