MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI ur tradition teaches that “as one door closes, another opens – generations come and generations go.” Never have these words and thoughts had such an impact on me as they do this year, my last year in your service as your Rabbi after 47 years of Rabbinic leadership to this, the beloved Congregation of the dreams of my youth, middle and senior years.

O

In two short months, I retire and leave your rabbinic leadership, and I pray that your next Rabbi will be blessed with your total support, respect and love as I have been. I rejoice in my ability as one of my final rabbinic duties and privileges, to pay tribute to this evening‟s guests of honor, Edie and Rob Stein, who reflect honor and glory upon this congregation. When I am privileged to make a presentation to them during the program this evening, I hope to elaborate on this, citing details in their lives that make us so proud of them.

I pray that the almighty will bless them, together with their children, with long life, good health, joy and „Naches,‟ and may we, as a congregation always be deserving of their friendship and leadership.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT e are proud to honor Rob & Edie Stein as this year‟s journal honorees. Rob & Edie have been members at Ohav Sholom for approximately 20 years. Almost right from the beginning, they became active members. Rob has been a member of the Board of Trustees, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Executive Vice President, and ultimately President of the synagogue. As Treasurer, Rob was instrumental in upgrading our system of managing the Shul‟s payables by creating our general ledger on the computer from a manual system. Rob also introduced us to ADP payroll services to manage our payroll so it would be done correctly and accurately. He has also been our budget chairperson and continues to be active on the budget committee. For many years, Rob was a team captain for our bingo game by assisting in any capacity needed to make the game a success. He continues to assist the Bingo team by running the entire game when needed. While Rob was President, his budgeting skills came into play in the development of the Lobby Renovation Project. Not only was he an active member of that committee during his Presidency, but also through the dedication of the Lobby this past October. Rob continues to regularly attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and Executive Board and provides valuable input.

Edie has also been an active member of the congregation. Since Edie has been a member, she has always been involved with our Sisterhood in many capacities. Not only has she been a member of the Sisterhood Board, serving on the kiddush committee, Co-chairing the Shaloch Manos committee, and Chairing the Annual Paid Up Membership Dinner. Edie has also volunteered at our Bingo game from time to time.

Both Rob and Edie are dedicated professionals‟ balancing home, work and volunteer activities with grace. Rob works as an engineer at BAE Systems and Edie just earned tenure with the West Hempstead School District. They are proud parents of Stephanie, David, and Gabriella, who are all students at the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway. We have enjoyed watching their family grow through the years as they are all regular attendees on Shabbos. Following in their parent‟s footsteps, both Stephanie and David have served as COSY officers and assist the Youth Program at every opportunity.

One thing I can tell you about the Steins is that whenever help is needed, the Steins are there.

They are an important part of the shul and their commitment to the shul is demonstrated in their actions as volunteers and parents. There are a few people in this congregation that I consider to be the hardest and most dedicated workers. The Stein‟s, as a team, fall in to that category. I am proud to honor the Steins not just as the President, but as their friend.

die and Rob were married on August of 1986 and moved to Merrick in 1989. They joined Ohav Sholom even before the last of their boxes were unpacked! It was an easy decision for them; Ohav Sholom had been on Edie‟s radar for quite some time. During her high school years, she visited frequently as an NCSY‟er, so when it was time to choose a community, Edie recalled her fond memories of Merrick and she and Rob knew it was the right place for them. What a lucky break this was for our Shul, as it wasn‟t long before Edie and Rob became important cogs at Ohav Sholom.

A graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School, Edie attended Stern College for Women for two years before transferring to the Fashion Institute of Technology where she earned her Bachelor‟s Degree in Textile Development and Marketing. She later earned her Master‟s in Education specializing in Special Education and Literacy from Dowling College. Edie currently works as a special education teacher in the West Hempstead School District.

Rob grew up in Pittsburg and graduated from the Hillel Academy High School. He attended the University of Pittsburg where he received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, and then NYU where he obtained his M.B.A. in Finance. He is currently a Senior System Engineer at BAE Systems in Greenlawn, where he designs Friend or Foe Systems.

The Stein‟s deep involvement with Ohav began when they decided to help out at the Bazaar, a fundraising event. They hit the ground running! Without delay, Rob became a “regular” at Bingo while Edie became a leader in Sisterhood. Rob joined the Board of Trustees, then became Treasurer, Financial Secretary, EVP and eventually, Rob took on the role of President of Ohav Sholom.

Edie and Rob are a wonderful team and have worked tirelessly, side by side, on behalf of our Shul. At one point, their careers at Ohav converged as both Edie and Rob were simultaneously Executive Vice Presidents, Edie of Sisterhood and Rob of the Congregation. Their shared efforts continued when both Steins worked on our popular Shaloch Manot Program, Edie running and organizing it while Rob was writing a new computer program expressly designed to help track names and reciprocities. (A huge development that simplified a once daunting task!) Edie and Rob have also worked on the High Holiday seating committees as well as numerous Journal Dinner-Dances.

As a team they have accomplished much at Ohav, but their joint efforts at home have yielded even more spectacular results. Edie and Rob have three amazing children, all who attend HAFTR. Stephanie is a junior in high school, David is in the eighth grade and Gabriella is a 4th grader. They are already following in their parents footsteps, as Stephanie and David are currently officers in our COSY program.

Both Edie and Rob have given so much to our shul. Their generosity, warmth and love have helped make Ohav Sholom the extraordinary place that it is. We are grateful for all of their years of service, and congratulate them on this wonderful honor!

MESSAGE FROM THE HONOREES

I

t is hard to believe that nearly 21 years have passed since we moved into Merrick. We moved in as a young couple not knowing where our lives would ultimately lead us. However, the one thing that we did know and both always valued from our own childhood upbringing was to be part of a Jewish community. This was very important for us as this was the role model our parents provided whether it was Patchogue or Pittsburgh. A warm, close knit Jewish community, where your friends became family, was where we knew we wanted to be. We feel that we too have succeeded as our parents had in fulfilling that same role model, for our three children, Stephanie, David, and Gabriella. Ohav Sholom and Merrick are home for all of us.

As we settled and became more entrenched with the activities and people at Ohav Sholom, we knew we made the right choice. Our connection to Ohav and Merrick became more than a physical connection. Yes, it was important to become involved with the inner workings of shul business, but our connection became a spiritual connection that developed into great respect and love. It became a connection to the community; a connection that we are forever grateful for having.

It is hard to believe that so many years have passed, but we are thankful to you, our Ohav Sholom family and Rabbi Wohlberg, for being a part of our lives and allowing us to be a part of yours.

We are truly appreciative of this honor.
