Hello!

I hope you’re as excited as I am that spring is finally here. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy the four seasons we have in Oklahoma, but it’s been winter long enough. If I can at least get some green grass, blooming trees, and sunshine, then I think it’ll hold me over until lake season finally gets here!

We have a really fun issue for you this month. Our Shop Local issues are always so cool to me, as we get to work with so many great local retailers in the metro and showcase their products. In this issue we decided to feature tons of local fashions with some great models. Our photoshoots present the styles in everyday settings at some recognizable places around OKC. We also started a new section this month we are calling Local Market. This will showcase great gifts of all shapes, sizes and prices, all of which are in stock at our local retail shops. I’m sure you will see several things you’ll want for yourself or for someone else,

so make sure to take a copy of So6ix with you so you can point out the items you want.

There is a restaurant featured in this issue that you need to try asap if you haven’t already. This month’s food review is on Frida Southwest, and it exceeded some already high expectations. The building, bar and décor are all gorgeous, but the food is even better. Put it on the top of your list for a dinner this month and you won’t be sorry.

We thank you for picking up this month’s issue and for the continued love and support that drives us every month to make So6ix the best we possibly can. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you,

HOUSE BILLS

HB-3960: If this bill becomes law, it will change the requirements for probable cause and conviction in relation to driving under the influence of marijuana in OK. It will require an officer to make articulable observations in order to request a driver to submit to field sobriety tests for marijuana. For conviction, the State would need evidence of the presence of marijuana, THC or their metabolites and prove that a person’s ability to operate a vehicle was affected to a degree that the person was rendered substantially incapable or that the person committed some separate traffic infraction. This change would be a significant benefit for Oklahomans who possess a medical marijuana card and who lawfully use marijuana in a way that does not cause them to be incapable of operating a motor vehicle.

HB-3709: This bill would also provide a benefit to medical marijuana users who are on probation for criminal offense. If it becomes law, it would prohibit a person on probation with a suspended prison sentence from being sent to prison for lawfully possessing or using medical marijuana while on probation, unless the sentencing court previously found that prohibiting the use of medical marijuana was necessary. Under the current law, thousands of Oklahomans on probation are prohibited from possessing and using the medicine that has been prescribed to them for fear of violating probation and going to prison.

Both of these bills represent forward thinking by our legislature to help remove the negative stigma associated with medical marijuana use and to help people who need medical marijuana on a daily basis while protecting the public at large from any safety risks. If these things pique your interest, contact your local representative and let them know how you feel about these proposed bills. Your input makes a difference!

Lucille is a sweet rescue pup from The Village. This five-pound chihuahua/terrier mix loves her momma more than anything. She waits for her to get home from her perch on the sofa in front of her favorite window. Even though Luci is a sweet pup, she can be as feisty as a 100-pound guard dog if you mess with her family. Luci was named after her owner’s grandmother and, of course, Lucille Ball! When this sweet girl isn’t waiting on her mom to get home from a workday, she can be found enjoying car rides, taking walks around the block, and trying to get people food. Her absolute favorite thing, though, is a good puppuccino at the end of a long day.

SIP & ENJOY!

Located in Oklahoma City’s lively Paseo Arts District, Frida Southwest is a New American and Southwestern restaurant that offers an inviting experience with the perfect mix of great-tasting food, excellent cocktails and a friendly atmosphere.

QUESO FUNDIDO

Frida's blend of cheeses, rajas, pickled Fresno, crispy corn tortillas

PALM HEART CEVICHE

PEPITA-CRUSTED CHILE RELLENO

MEXICAN HOT CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE hazelnut cinnamon brittle, chocolate dulce, spiced cinnamon-ancho crust

BEET IT

AVOCADO TOAST

avocado-infused tequila, pineapple liqueur, fresh lime juice

When you walk in, it’s immediately obvious that some careful thought went into the layout of this restaurant, with a fantastic bar area, stylish booths and intimate seating all available. We visited Frida Southwest on a brisk winter afternoon and decided to dine inside, but we immediately agreed that on our next visit we would definitely take advantage of their superb outdoor patio area.

To kick things off we turned straight to the cocktail menu. You don’t typically see avocado and beetroot on a cocktail list, so unsurprisingly the Avocado Toast and the Beet It got our attention. Both cocktails were fantastic, and I could see myself coming back to sample these again over brunch.

I consider myself to be a queso connoisseur, so naturally the first thing we tried was the Queso Fundido. Despite not being your typical queso dip, the blend of Southwest cheeses and pickled Fresno chiles with crispy corn tortillas was more than enough to get my tick of approval, and I would definitely recommend it to any fellow cheese lovers out there.

For the mains, we ordered the Vegan Tamales and Pepita-Crusted Chile Relleno. For you readers looking for a delicious plant-based meal, the Vegan Tamales, featuring a red chile vinaigrette, are a must-try. The Pepita-Crusted Chile Relleno is a vegetarian-friendly take on the classic Mexican dish. The toasted walnuts and queso fresco really make the dish a standout.

After the vegetable cocktails and vegan dishes, we thought it fair to treat ourselves to some dessert. We tried the Mexican Hot Chocolate Cheesecake, and let’s just say it was as good as it sounds. Wow!

It’s no wonder this restaurant is so highly recommended. Let me sign off by saying the food, cocktails, and atmosphere were only exceeded by the pleasant demeanor of the staff. Frida Southwest is a winner all around!

CHICKEN SHACK

18725 E. ROUTE 66 HWY, LUTHER, OK 73054 405.277.5020 | THEBACKYARDATTHESHACK.COM

Whether you’re having a private party or just out for a relaxing dinner, the Chicken Shack is the best place to be. With their signature backyard and quaint indoor dining space, it’s great for every occasion – even before you get to their food. The Chicken Shack has phenomenal chicken, of course, but you should also try their pork chops or jalapeño mac and cheese for something a little different. Their chicken is a local favorite, especially on their infamous Wing Wednesdays. This spot may be off the beaten path, but it is worth the trip!

ALVARADO’S

2805 S. BROADWAY, EDMOND, OK 73013

405.359.8860 | ALVARADOSMEXICAN.COM

Alvarado’s offers authentic Mexican food, and that isn’t the only reason to go. Every person who enters this restaurant is greeted with an authentic smile as well. Although the chips and queso are delicious, the hardest part is not filling up on the fresh-made tortillas before your entrée arrives. Alvarado’s is plentiful with their portions, so you never leave hungry, and their food is cooked to perfection, so it’s hard to leave anything uneaten! If you are looking for a great family-friendly spot to eat, Alvarado’s is a hard place to beat.

SUPPORTS GIVING FOR GOOD CITY CARE

Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

City Care has 114 units of supportive and permanent housing.

The program serves more than 850 students each week.

in Whiz

score an average of 37 points higher than those not in the program.

City Care has over 1,500 volunteers throughout the OKC area.

City Care believes in the intrinsic value of every person, and their organization exists to do the work few others are willing to do. City Care provides food for the hungry and relief for the hurting, and they have a space for complete restoration. They hope to help others transform their lives. A belief this group holds is that to do something different, one has to see something different. They established Whiz Kids to mentor and help the city’s most vulnerable children with their character and their schoolwork – helping fill the gap created by life’s unfortunate circumstances. This organization believes that the home is the heartbeat of the family, and that home should be a place of rest, recovery and healing. Because of this, they offer supportive housing for those who are transitioning out of homelessness. City Care creates an atmosphere in which families and individuals can envision a life worth living and working hard for every day.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP

DONATE

Last year, 83% of City Care’s funds went to charitable programs – direct relief to those in need. To donate and see your money in action, visit citycareokc.org. You can also donate in-kind items by calling 405.642.1112.

GET INVOLVED

You can volunteer with Whiz Kids by calling 405.602.2815 or by visiting citycareokc.org/whizkids.
