MYTH #1
Between school and work, I
don’t have time to go abroad.
The U offers a wide variety of programs so that students can pursue a path abroad that suits their circumstance. From week-long Facultyled programs held during school breaks, to a full semester or year of Affiliate or Exchange study, there’s an option for everyone. Advisors work hard to help students find programs that match their academic goals and timelines, as well as their other life obligations. So, chances are there’s an experience abroad that will fit your life just right.

MYTH
#2
Learning Abroad is expensive.
We hear this one a lot. And although some experiences can be costly, that’s not true for all experiences! We believe Learning Abroad should be accessible to all students and we offer programs at many price points. Some even cost about the same as what a student would expect to pay for in-state tuition. Advisors do their best to match students with programs that meet their budget, plus, our office awards over $400,000 in scholarships every year to help students go abroad.
“Do it! If finances are an issue, apply for scholarships. If time and date are an issue, keep searching. There are so many study abroad programs offered and you will never forget the experiences, skills, and memories you will make!”

MYTH #3
I won’t have support abroad.
We know feeling supported when you’re in a new situation is important for your wellbeing. As a Learning Abroad participant, you have access to resources that help you transition to international life, including mental health support, pre-trip guidance, and onsite orientations.
Homesickness and culture shock are real, but most students also recognize an increased resilience and adaptability after arriving abroad. They find friends and other coping tools that were not readily visible before leaving. They also keep in close contact with support systems back home—friends, family, and advisors are usually just a message or video call away.
As in everyday life, emergencies are rare. However, if needed, in-country personnel, a 24/7 hotline, and staff at the U will help you navigate difficult situations, plus you are covered by the U’s international insurance policy the moment you leave the U.S.
