Double appointment sets Sparrows up for European growth The Sparrows Group has boosted its senior management team with two key appointments as it looks to enhance its leading market share in the UK and grow its operations throughout the rest of Europe during 2015. The global leader in offshore lifting and mechanical handling services has promoted the experienced Mark Beveridge to the role of European Operations Director. To support him in meeting these growth objectives the group has also recruited Martin Thomson as Head of Business Acquisition and Strategic Development for Europe and Africa. Mr Beveridge said: “A major focus of 2014 was implementing an organizational restructure that is focused on geographies to ensure we are well placed to provide customers with a value driven service. The transition sets us up with a good foundation for the year ahead and we have brought Martin in to lead our business development activities. “The aim of the restructure has been to provide our customers with a delivery assured approach utilizing our in-house expertise – we want to be closer to our customers to provide them with a quality service that supports their drive for efficiency, reliability and safety of critical equipment and operations.” Mr Beveridge has worked in the field of engineering for over 25 years and has been with the Sparrows Group since 2008. He started within the company’s Engineering Division and most recently held the position of Business Manager for Drilling before on his current role. His engineering background will be

key to understanding the technical challenges facing the industry in the year ahead. With over twenty years’ accumulated experience working in the oil and gas industry, Mr Thomson arrives from KCA Deutag where he was Senior Vice President Commercial in charge of overseeing all commercial activities globally. Mr Thomson has considerable international experience and has worked for Total Oil Marine, Subsea 7 and GE Oil & Gas. Mr Beveridge said: “We have streamlined our processes to ensure we can respond quickly to customer requirements. The Sparrows Group has extensive engineering capabilities throughout all sections of our business and this depth of knowledge, particularly in design services, can support clients to improve their efficiency and reliability.” Established originally in 1946, the Sparrows Group moved into Aberdeen and the oil & gas market in 1975 and will celebrate 40 years in the North Sea next year. They are one of the most well-known and trusted names in the oil and gas industry. The firm provides engineered products and services, primarily to the offshore sector, specializing in lifting and handling, cable and pipe lay, and fluid power solutions.

Maven invests £4.25m in MBO of subsea technology company Fathom Systems Maven Capital Partners (Maven) has led the management buy-out of subsea technology firm, Fathom Systems Limited. The £4.25million investment by Maven in the Aberdeenshire business represents the private equity firm’s 15th portfolio company investment in the energy service sector. In the past twelve months, Maven has invested over £15million in RMEC, ISN Solutions, R&M Engineering and achieved an almost four-fold return on investment following the exit from EFC Group. Established in 2005, Fathom engineers highly specialized underwater communication, control and instrumentation products and services for the fast-growing subsea oil and gas sector. With a turnover of £5million and employing 36 people, Fathom is renowned for the quality and reliability of its designs and focus on customer and operational support with a global client base in the areas of commercial diving, ROVs and underwater engineering. Under the deal, Maven’s clients own a majority stake in the business alongside current managing director, Gareth Kerr, who will continue to lead a strong and experienced management team. Jock Gardiner, Partner at Maven, said: “We are very impressed with the development of Fathom Systems and look forward to working in partnership with Gareth Kerr and his team to take the business

to the next level. Fathom has an excellent reputation for ‘best in breed’ products and service delivery with genuine growth potential. The transaction represents an

excellent opportunity for our client funds to invest at an attractive price in a strong brand operating in a robust sector of the energy services market.” Fathom has recently moved to new, larger premises in Portlethen’s Badentoy Park with office accommodation and a precision engineering workshop to accommodate its growing workforce. Maven’s investment will enable the business to further its international growth and expand its product line into other high-end engineered systems.

Gareth Kerr, Managing Director at Fathom, added: “The Maven deal has come at a perfect time for Fathom Systems. Over the past year the business has doubled its turnover and staff, and similar growth is expected over the next two years. We have built a

strong brand since the company’s formation in 2005 and this will be the foundation for the next phase in our development. Our reputation for quality products, engineered systems and service has given our clients the confidence to choose Fathom for their new projects and fleet upgrades. “With the backing of Maven and the support of a strengthened management team we will exceed client expectations and achieve our growth ambitions both in existing and new markets.”

Damen delivers Offshore Cable Layer to Van Oord in only 15 months First delivery of Damen’s new design: the DOC 8500 Cable Layer The 22nd of December saw the delivery by Damen of an innovative new DOC 8500 cable laying vessel to international offshore contractor Van Oord. Named Nexus, the 126-metre vessel is intended for the installation of electricity cables for offshore wind farms. Van Oord is currently making preparations for the Gemini offshore wind farm which will be constructed 55 kilometres to the north of Schiermonnikoog, one of the Dutch Wadden Islands, and the cable-laying vessel will be deployed initially at that site. Despite encountering some challenges during the build process, the DOC 8500 was delivered several days ahead of the specified completion date and the entire design, engineering and build took just 15 months. This was particularly satisfying as additional work was also added to the specification after the contract was signed, with additional cable-laying infrastructure being installed prior to handover. The success of the project was down to a number of factors. The level of cooperation between Van Oord and Damen was highly intensive from the outset, with very short lines of communications between the decision makers on both sides. An additional factor was the ability of Damen to draw on the expertise on a number of companies within the Damen Shipyards group. Six Damen companies in Romania, Ukraine and the Netherlands contributed engineering and project management expertise; the vessel itself was constructed at Damen Shipyards Galati. The ability to access and coordinate such a

diverse range of resources gives Damen a significant advantage when it comes to complex projects such as the DOC 8500. Equipment installation The Nexus is now at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen, where Van Oord is building and installing the additional cable laying equipment. The Damen Offshore Carrier (DOC)

concept was first introduced by Damen in 2012 as a cost-effective smaller heavy transport, offshore installation and ro-ro platform suitable for multiple markets. With its spacious and flush open deck the design is highly adaptable and its modular construction means that it can switch quickly and economically between roles. Jaap de Jong, Van Oord’s Staff Director Ship Management Department, commented: “By working closely together, Damen and Van Oord managed to build a fit-forpurpose and economical vessel in a very short period of time. The Nexus is an asset to Van Oord’s fleet and its Offshore Wind Projects business unit.”

Barge Master’s ambitious growth strategy attracts major investment from Parcom Capital Parcom Capital and the management team of Barge Master announced today that agreement has been reached on the participation of Parcom Capital as majority shareholder and investor in Barge Master Holding B.V. Barge Master is active in the field of motion compensation technology for the maritime and offshore

industry, compensating movements of vessels from waves and thereby significantly increasing the

number of workable hours/days of offshore vessels. Managing Director/founder Martijn Koppert will continue to be CEO of Barge Master. Frans van Seumeren who invested in Barge Master in 2010 will roll over part of his current stake and continue to be involved with the company. Current projects of Barge Master include the piping bridge installation for the Shell Malampaya project, in which Barge Master’s T-700 multipurpose motion compensated platform will operate, and the delivery of the new T-40 motion compensated crane on the Kroonborg, Wagenborg’s new vessel which will operate in the North Sea for maintenance work on platforms of NAM/Shell. Barge Master recently ordered its second T-700 platform and secured a fabrication slot for delivery of the hydraulics for the third platform.

Teekay Petrojarl contracts Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam for the ‘EPC Redeployment Upgrade’ of its FPSO Petrojarl I Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam (DSR), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion (DSC), has been awarded an EPC contract by Petrojarl I LLC for the upgrade of its FPSO Petrojarl I. The Petrojarl I is a Teekay Petrojarl managed FPSO, built in 1986, which has been active in the North Sea. Its redeployment will be at the Atlanta field in Brazil. The Petrojarl I is contracted by Queiroz Galvão Exploração e Produção (QGEP) for deployment at the Atlanta post-salt oil field in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil to produce heavy crude oil in a water depth of 1535m. For this deployment as an ‘early production system’, the FPSO will be upgraded at DSR. The works consist of basic engineering, detailed and construction design and engineering, workshop drawings, interface engineering, marine & process equipment procurement, fabrication, construction, corrosion protection/coating, transport and lifting operations, integration, mechanical completion, performance testing and commissioning activities, and includes upgrades and modifications related to: -

Marine, Hull and Life Extension according to Class Conversion of the process systems (i.e. separation train and produced water topsides)

-

and integration Brazilian Compliance

Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam, responsible for the full upgrade of the FPSO, has formed partnerships with Frames and Nevesbu. Frames, with its headquarters in Alphen aan den Rijn (the Netherlands), will carry out the design and fabrication of the new ‘Topside Skids’. Nevesbu, with its head offices in Alblasserdam (the Netherlands), will carry out the Marine, and Topside Integration Engineering. Unique project The contract has been secured by and will be supervised by DSC’s ‘Offshore & Conversion’ task force team. Commercial Managers Ruud Haneveer and Bas Loohuis have worked together in creating this success: “This is again a unique project for Damen Shiprepair & Conversion. To our knowledge an EPC Redeployment Upgrade

Contract has not been carried out in Europe before. We expect, by being responsible for the hull, the topside conversion and its integration, to offer Teekay a controlled situation with regards to safety, quality, budget and delivery time and herewith demonstrate to our future customers our EPC capabilities.”This project represents a major step in Damen Shiprepair & Conversion’s development to a full service conversion group. Leaving aside the unique partnerships with Frames and Nevesbu, the shipyard undertakes another step in its project management organisation. Thomas van Tol, the appointed Project Manager, had this to say: “The oil and gas industry is subject to extremely high HSEQ requirements. This requires a professional project team. The experiences with past Oil & Gas projects, such as the ‘Gryphon A’ FPSO, also carried out by DSR, has made us ready for this task. Comprehensive design and engineering management for this project, will serve as the foundation for future major offshore projects.”The Petrojarl I will be at the shipyard for approximately one year and will arrive early January 2015 at the yard.

Apart from the new platforms and cranes Barge Master’s R&D team are working on the roll out of a motion compensated helicopter deck and a motion compensated piling frame. Additional motion compensation technology applications may follow, building on Barge Masters’ expertise and knowledge in motion compensated cranes and platforms. Martijn Koppert, CEO of Barge Master comments: “we are very pleased to welcome Parcom Capital as new shareholder, further enabling us to accelerate and serve our clients with an increasing fleet of motion compensation systems. We see an increasing demand in the rental and sale of motion compensated platforms and cranes. Broadening our group of shareholders with Parcom Capital enables us to leap forward in our ambitious growth strategy. ”

Piet-Hein de Jager, partner at Parcom Capital said: “we are very pleased to invest in such an innovative and ambitious niche player in the global offshore industry. With the current management team and Frans van Seumeren as co-shareholders we believe that this company is well positioned to further benefit from the growing demand for motion compensation technology. We look forward to working together with management in further developing and expanding the company. ” Frans van Seumeren comments: “I have great confidence in the future of Barge Master; therefore I remain shareholder and will continue investing in the company. The current growth of RollDock and Roll-Lift, my main investments, made me decide not to remain the sole investor in Barge Master. With Parcom we have a strong partner which is known in the industry. ”

First Major Programme Gets Underway to Train Iraqi Oil & Gas Workforce Shell and OPITO commit to the safety of 15,000 from the Iraqi workforce with New Training Centre and Standards Up to 15,000 Iraqi oil and gas workers will be trained in how to deal safely with the potential hazards of hydrogen sulphide (H2S). Shell and oil and gas training standards body, OPITO, have joined forces to ensure workers are trained to the globally recognised H2S standard. A corrosive and hazardous gas, also known as “sour gas”, H2S occurs in the production of oil and gas fields which have a high content of this gas in their reservoirs. This is the first industry-led training programme to be rolled out across Iraq since OPITO signed an agreement with The Ministry of Oil to help develop the country’s local workforce with the necessary skills and training to safely utilise Iraq’s hydrocarbon resources and provide qualifications needed for Iraqi’s to access jobs in the country’s energy sector. As one of the largest international companies in Iraq, Shell has invested in a new training centre in Majnoon (near Basrah) and worked closely with OPITO to customise the training standard relating to H2S for the Iraqi workforce. Hans Nijkamp Shell Iraq Vice President and Country Chairman said: “One of the biggest risks in producing oil and gas, particularly

sour gas, is the presence of H2S. To reduce that risk we, along with our Majnoon project partners Petronas and Missan Oil Company have committed to training Iraqi’s in the safe handling of this hazardous gas. Our training centre in Majnoon is now up and running and is the first OPITO-approved centre in Iraq. This is a major step in our journey towards building a safe Iraqi workforce that is accredited to international standards. We are immensely proud of our partnership with OPITO to deliver the standard and to have our centre accredited so that we can get people trained as quickly and effectively as possible.” David Doig, group chief executive of OPITO, said: “Shell has shown real leadership in the development and roll-out of this training standard and must be recognised and commended for investing time and

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY AN EXTREMELY WARM WELCOME FOR THE CREW IN PUNTA ARENAS Another example of a truly global delivery is the former Greek ferry Pathagon, that was delivered safely from Greece to Punta Arenas (Chile) by Redwise with redelivery last week, following the Atlantic transits, bunker calls at Cabo Verde and Montevideo and passage of Magellan Strait. This vessel is propelled by 4 azimuth thrusters, one at each corner and being a locally classed coastal vessel, was brought into full class by the Owners including upgrade of radio and safety equipment, structural strengthening Fore and Aft, compliance with Marpol and Loadline regulations in consultation with Redwise basis similar previous voyages, and naturally class. For this particular weather sensitive delivery voyage with a vessel build for short coastal passages, insurance was arranged by Redwise through NHM in Rotterdam and Bureau Vogtschmidt being the warranty Surveyors. The Master Nico, Ch.Officer Edwin and Ch.Engineer Adriaan, are part of the core crew of Redwise of whom many are permanent-

ly employed and proud of their profession to deliver ships around the world, a truly global activity. Naturally they received full support from the shore organization with a long track record of unusual delivery voyages requiring an open mind, vast knowledge and creativity. The entire crew received and extremely warm welcome in Punta Arenas by the vessel’s Owners, in line with the tradition of several other Owners who understand the perils of the sea of these unusual voyages. People wanting to go on holidays in Chile, and in particular Patagonia, may well come across the vessel in the future and the warm hospitality of their Chilean hosts.

financial resources in its delivery which will ultimately save lives. We are confident that the other major employers operating in Iraq’s oil and gas sector will follow Shell’s example and commit to training their workers in this standard.” He added that this initiative represents an acknowledgement of OPITO’s role in influencing and

shaping common global safety standards. “But, more importantly, it is the catalyst for the development of a learning infrastructure for the people of Iraq who, if they are to successfully re-build their country, must create a safe, sustainable and profitable oil and gas industry.”

SHIPS DELIVERY AROUND THE WORLD, A TRULY GLOBAL ACTIVITY Delta 200 and Delta 300 still going strong Voith Schneider tugs Delta 200 (exToia) and Delta 300 (ex- Ngahue) built mid 1970’s in New Zealand at Wangarei, still going strong on their voyage from New Zealand to their new home base. Both tugs are a credit to their builders and the Centre Port crew and organization who maintained these Voith Schneider tugs very well and were very professional and helpful with all preparations and certification under the leadership of Capt. Charles Smith. Both tugs are classed with Lloyd’s register but trading certificates were issued by the New Zealand administration, requiring the tugs to be brought fully in class with Lloyd’s Register prior to departure on an international voyage, including new Loadline and Safety equipment certification, amongst others. Redwise Maritime Services B.V. of the Netherlands was contracted for this and the indirect continua-

tion delivery voyages of the tugs Redwise arranged in addition for the usual H&M and P&I insurances through Nausch Hogan and Murray office at Rotterdam. Both vessels did perform very well on the first leg of the voyage to Singapore with the two Ruston Paxman and two English Electric diesel engines operating continuously with only one governor to be

repaired. Following bunkering and taking fresh provision at Singapore the tugs will continue on the 2nd leg of the voyage. Erik, one of the Captains, has been working for Redwise well over 25 years, most of the voyages together with his wife, the cook, taking care of the crew. Both completed previously to this voyage a tow from Singapore to Mexico, mid winter around Cape of Good Hope in charge of the tug Admiral together with current Ch.Engineer Sergei, while the other Master Nanne, supported by Thijs and Hendrik, was sailing at the same time as Ch.Officer on board the tug Lambert with a double tow, testimony to the versatility of Redwise, who deliver a large variety of vessels around the globe, including ferries, dredgers, cargo vessels and OSV’s.
