We break open our Production Week to give you an introduction to the ideas and processes of design, including presentations of the current set model, lighting and sound design. You even have chance to see the fit up of the set on stage as it happens and ask questions of our expert technical team. Recommended THEATRE UNWRAPPED age 13+

See backstage and meet the professionals who work across all the departments. Learn about the broad range of career paths in theatre, experience what our staff do and find out how they became involved in professional theatre work. Years 7 – 13

Year 10 and 11 placements Our work experience placements are designed to offer an overview of the organisation, giving you an insight into the broad range of careers in theatre which are available. You will get the chance to spend time in the different departments and lead on your own small theatre project. There will be approximately 10 placements given across the academic year. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF YOUTH THEATRES – RAISING THE GAME

Join the Brassed Off technical rehearsal from the control room for a unique insight into the final stages of a production. Special cameras give a close up view on the programming operation of lighting and sound and your own set of headphones allow you to listen in to the director, creatives and crew. You can’t get closer than this! 8 people maximum per session. Each session lasts one hour and starts on the hour. THEATRE UNWRAPPED Recommended age 13+

ARTS AWARD “DISCOVER” IN A DAY

WORK EXPERIENCE

Relaxed or REST (Relaxed Environment Supportive Theatre) performances are specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including people with an ASC, sensory and communication disorders, or a learning disability. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement and some small changes made to the light and sound effects.

This Autumn’s guest is playwright, Evan Placey. Evan recently won a Writers’ Guild Award for Best Play for Young Audiences for Girls Like That, which explores the pertinent issues of cyber bullying. Taking this relevant issue as a starting point (but it could be any), he takes you through how to support students to generate and structure their own new devised work.

A co-learning opportunity with our expert technical team. Get the best out of your school’s lighting and sound equipment. Be inspired to create exciting design at low cost. £30 per session for two teachers. Up to six students go free. Theatre or school-based. Please enquire for dates.

Develops team working, design and numeracy Open up a world of creativity and imagination in your classroom. Taking a story or a play that you’re studying as a starting point, our Head of Wardrobe Tim Heywood will work with your class to unlock design ideas for props, costume and scenery.

PLAY BOX

To achieve Discover Level Arts Award, children and young people discover the arts around them, find out about artists and their work and share their experiences. We’ll inspire your pupils, giving them the knowledge they need to go back to school to complete the award.

We hire costumes to schools and colleges. We have over 2,500 costume pieces built up over many years and are always adding to our stock. We can even make you something specific if we aren’t too busy. YOUTH THEATRE

BEYOND THE CURRICULUM

We are very pleased to announce that Reprotec, the East Midlands’ longest and largest established independent office equipment company, will be sponsoring the Theatre’s Learning Programme.

Opportunities for young people and adults to connect with us in their own time.

Our Youth Theatre runs weekly, with sessions that develop confidence, acting technique and skills. We work towards a major show each year on the main stage plus other performances in our Studio. Age 8 – 10 years: Tuesdays in term time 5pm – 6.30pm

This season we are proud to announce a new element to our learning programme – Theatre Unwrapped. Get free hands-on experience with all aspects of theatre-making and allow students the chance to peel back the processes that go into each of our home-produced shows.

Age 11 – 13 years: Sundays in term time 10am – 11.30am Age 14 – 16 years: Sundays in term time 2pm – 3.30pm Age 17 – 19 years: Sundays in term time 11.45am – 1.45pm £70 a term* We currently have a waiting list for these youth theatre groups. Once you apply we will let you know as soon as a place becomes available.

THEATRE THINKERS TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

The last Thursday of every month in term time, 4.30 – 6.00pm Our Theatre Thinkers group meets monthly to help us decide how we can make Derby Theatre even more exciting and relevant for

young people aged 11 – 19. Working on projects such as being the Youth Theatre’s marketing team and events managing the Connections Festival, young people gain an insight into professional theatre. Arts Award is also available as part of this group. Free group. Contact us to reserve your place

We have inspiring and engaging provision for learners at all stages. Workshops can be tailored to meet your needs and can be anything from a simple storytelling workshop to a three-year developmental partnership. As a Learning Theatre we have a whole host of resources at your disposal, which includes our talented staff, from our skilled technicians to our superb Artistic Director.

PLUS ONE SCHEME Derby Theatre continue to work in partnership with Barnardo’s and other cultural organisations around the city on Plus One, a ticket donation scheme which provides young people in care and their families with free tickets to experience the arts in the city. So far, funds raised are in excess of £20,000 and the scheme has provided 500+ experiences.
