FOR PRIMARY Spend a day at the theatre and learn new skills. Discover everything from costume and set design to lighting, in an accessible and fun way. See backstage and make your own mini-production to be performed on stage.

ONCE UPON A TIME WRITING WORKSHOP Taking stories and fairytales as a starting point, we use physical drama exercises to inspire and motivate learners to explore their written voice. A lively one-hour workshop that will get your pupils thinking about the story and characters from a practical starting point. For KS1 and KS2 £80 plus VAT Please enquire for availability.

Taking a story or a play that you’re studying as a starting point, our Head of Wardrobe Tim Heywood will work with your class to unlock design ideas for props, costume and scenery. KS3 and GCSE English This workshop will use a facilitator and performer to add another dimension to the Solace of the Road scheme of work through live performance, giving students the chance to "replay" scenes to explore characters' different perspectives and points of view.

GCSE and A Level Drama

It's Holly's birthday, and she's going on a road trip to find her mum. Headstrong and streetsmart, she boldly sets out as her glamourous blonde alter-ego Solace. So begins a bittersweet, and sometimes hilarious journey as Solace swaggers and Holly tiptoes across England and through memories, discovering her true self, and unlocking the secrets of her past.

Working with the show's director, Sarah Brigham, this workshop allows students to get an insight into why and how creative decisions are made. The director will use script to help students analyse language the key to understanding character motivation and action.

Olivier award-winning writer Mike Kenny adapts Carnegie award-winning author Siobhan Dowd's novel.

Workshops are limited but available on request between January and the end of March.

A unique chance to see key moments replayed with input from the student audience to help explore character, story and production elements. Led by the show’s director. Helps GCSE and A level students with their live theatre review.

FREE If you can’t make these dates then there will be a post-show discussion on Thu 12 March, after the 7.30pm performance.

COSTUME HIRE We hire costumes to schools and colleges. We have over 2,500 costume pieces built up over many years and are always adding to our stock. I AM NOT ALONE WHERE DO CARE, CULTURE AND EDUCATION MEET? A fascinating debate for anyone connected to children in care Wed 12 March, 5pm – 7pm, before 7.30pm performance of Solace of the Road Young people in care are the responsibility of us all. Building on the powerful issues explored in Solace of the Road, this dynamic and interactive expert panel debate the questions that affect every school, teacher, designated teacher, foster family, care setting and cultural organisation: How do we work together to give an inspirational start in life to young people in care? What makes for outstanding corporate parenting? How can help lift the lid on young people in care’s ambitions for life?

One Day Residency

JOIN DERBY THEATRE’S DRAMA NETWORK! Special Guests: Frantic Assembly Last season we launched an exciting and much needed new Drama Network (supporting both primary and secondary schools in the region) for teachers of Drama and Performing Arts and for primary teachers who want to develop their use of drama as a tool for engaging learning. Join us on a termly basis for networking, news, practice sharing and practical training. The workshop choices for the Spring meeting are:

Devised by Graeae, in collaboration with Derby Theatre and Dundee Rep.

We explore the themes of politics, rebellion and taboos within this contemporary retelling of Lorca’s classic. We also examine Graeae’s theatrical approach to the aesthetics of access and you will gain firsthand experience of how Graeae crafts theatrical processes, embedding audio description and sign language. Led by an integrated team of disabled and non-disabled practitioners.

Refresh your practice with this step by step programme that leads your students through the Solace of the Road script using simple drama techniques to develop critical analysis skills and raise attainment in English. You don’t have to be a drama expert to use this scheme! Paul and Ruth collectively have many years’ teaching and leadership experience, creating national training and teaching programmes.

Two Day Residency Building on the one-day residency, this unique in-depth experience will work either side of a visit to the show. Participants will also create a performance which can be shared at the theatre as part of our Schools’ Festival in July.

In this day and age, anybody can love anybody. Or are there still taboos?

Participants aged 16 and above and up to 25 participants per group. Residencies can be adapted to suit students at BTEC, Diploma, A Level, and Higher Education degree level. Work is tailored to meet the needs of each group. We ensure delivery is inclusive for Deaf and disabled participants and meets the access requirements of the whole group.

David Ireland's radical new take on Lorca's play re-fuels this classic story with a contemporary twist. When young lovers are overrun with passion, infatuation and defiance - the consequences are explosive. GIRLS LIKE THAT Thu 5 – Sat 7 February Schools Performance: Fri 6 February, 10.30am When a naked photograph of Scarlett goes viral, rumours run wild. Everyone is quick to judge, yet Scarlett remains silent. The friends Scarlett has grown up with become her worst enemies. But when a picture of a naked boy pings its way through cyberspace, the reaction is not the same. University of Derby students perform this explosive new play by Evan Placey which examines the fragility of friendship and the pressures on the digital generation. Recommended for 13 + Ideal for Drama, English and PSHE students. This performance will offer your students a chance to get a taste of what a University of Derby Theatre Arts degree involves. For added value there will be a facilitated discussion of these issues after the performance as well as a teacher’s briefing and education pack so you can continue the debate back in the classroom.
