WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN SEASON I’m really excited to be starting the season by taking you to the Brighton seaside in the swinging sixties with our co-production of One Man, Two Guvnors with Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch. With plenty of comedy and live music, it’s the perfect night out this autumn. I’m also thrilled we’ll be partnering with Queen’s Theatre again next year on a production of Shakespeare’s epic masterpiece, Macbeth. Our much-loved production of A Christmas Carol returns to the Derby Theatre stage this festive season, directed by Oliver O’Shea. For our younger theatregoers, following the success of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Gingerbread Man, Hiccup Theatre return with a new production of Little Red Riding Hood. With plenty of humour, live music and quirky charm, it’s the perfect Christmas treat for ages 3+. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for our Community, Student and Youth picks in the brochure. These groups meet with our Programming and Community Co-ordinator, Lauren to choose together a show that will be performed in our Studio. This season, our groups have selected three fantastic shows; Queens of Sheba, Fitting and You’re In A Bad Way. To find out more about our programming groups email Lauren at L.Barkes@derby.ac.uk and keep an eye on our social media channels for the next call-out. Don’t forget to tweet me @SarahBrigham, send me a letter or email to tell me what you’re enjoying this season. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Battles. Murder. Ghosts. And desire... Three witches on a heath have a disturbing prophecy for a victorious warrior. Macbeth will be king of Scotland. As this wicked seed is planted, daring Macbeth and his determined wife Lady Macbeth draw bloody daggers and set out on a fateful path. But seizing the crown comes at a terrible price, as guilt grows, enemies draw close and the fight for survival hurtles towards a tragic conclusion... Willy Russell’s legendary musical tells the captivating and moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. LYN PAUL first rose to fame in the early 1970s as a member of the New Seekers, whose hit I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing sold over 20 million copies and remains one of the 100 best-selling UK singles of all time. Lyn also featured as the lead vocalist on the 1974 number-one hit You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me. She returns for her farewell tour in the iconic role of Mrs Johnstone, which she first made her own in London’s West End. Few musicals have been received with such acclaim as the multi-award-winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

There’s a controversial new president in the White House, and racial tensions are on the rise. It is Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a rapidly changing world. The diner is in threat of being torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit. The iconic American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in this defining moment of American history. When Two Trains Running opened on Broadway in 1992, its legendary premiere won TONY and Drama Desk Awards. Directed by the 2018 winner of the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award, Nancy Medina, this major revival will introduce this Pulitzer Prize shortlisted modern classic to UK-wide audiences for the first time.

WASTELAND

THURSDAY 6 - FRIDAY 7 FEBRUARY

In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. WASTELAND, Gary Clarke’s sequel to COAL, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of male singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundscore and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

The Good Companions

THE WEDDING SINGER TUESDAY 5 - SATURDAY 9 NOVEMBER The Good Companions, now in their 60th anniversary year, are proud to present The Wedding Singer. A musical based on the hit 90’s film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. It’s 1985 and rock-star wannabe Robbie Hart, who still lives in his grandmother’s basement, is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his fiancé, Linda, leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie is so distraught that he makes every wedding as disastrous as his own. When he meets Julia, an admiring young waitress, Robbie falls madly in love. The only trouble is that Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street shark, and unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl of his dreams will be gone forever. With a score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 1980s, The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just have been the coolest guy in the room.
