Name a Seat

Welcome to our Spring Season

Do you have a special anniversary coming up or a landmark birthday? Or would you like to remember someone special? Name a Seat at Derby Theatre is a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion, or remember someone who has enjoyed the experience of live performance, whilst supporting the work of your local theatre.

On our main stage this spring, we’re thrilled to be staging Jim Cartwright’s classic comedy Two, a play I’ve wanted to direct for some time. If you haven’t seen it before, you’re in for a treat. Set in a pub in the North of England, it features brilliant and colourful interrelating stories from 14 characters, played by just 2 actors.

For £300, you can have an engraved plaque attached to a seat of your choice. We can add a personalised message and we’ll celebrate your support with a backstage tour for you, your family and friends, to include a photo opportunity sat in your very own seat! To find out more visit www.derbytheatre.co.uk/nameaseat or contact Paul Challacombe at p.challacombe@derby.ac.uk or 01332 593924. Get ready to take your seat!

We also look forward to welcoming the very best of the season’s touring shows to Derby. We have something for everyone, with Noël Coward’s Private Lives, a one-man show about David Bowie, the emotionally charged Gecko Theatre’s The Wedding, as well as comedy favourites such as The Play That Goes Wrong and Monty Python’s Spamalot. We have plenty of one-nighters too, ranging from Martin Kemp to Michael Portillo; Lucy Worsley to Pam Ayres! We also have lots on offer for children and families. We welcome back Metta Theatre with their production of Little Mermaid, Theatre Alibi stage a magical tale of big ideas and sky-high courage in The Boy Who Climbed into the Moon, Milkshake Live! comes to Derby Theatre and look out for two great children’s shows in our Studio theatre, offering delightful new versions of classic fairy tales. As always, our Studio theatre is the place to head to for the very best in new writing and Fringe theatre. My personal picks for this season include We’ve Got Each Other with its jukebox soundtrack; and Leaving from Curious Monkey theatre company, a new play giving a voice to young people in care, an issue dear to our hearts here at Derby Theatre. This Christmas, we’ll once again be collecting for Plus One, which allows young people in care and care leavers to see our work here at the theatre and participate. Please join us in supporting this excellent scheme via our after-show bucket collections, on the phone and online. I love to hear feedback on what you think of the shows here at Derby Theatre, so do tweet us, email us, drop us a line or fill out one of our comments cards which you can find in the foyers.

For every £1 you donate to support Derby Theatre, Arts Council England will match it by £1. So every pound goes twice as far!

Two

By Jim Cartwright Friday 2 – Saturday 24 March

Derby Theatre raises a glass with the brilliant comic two-hander. 1 pub. 14 different characters. 2 actors. In a pub in the North of England a bickering landlord and landlady take orders from the locals. As a range of colourful characters pull up a stool, the rich tapestry of their interconnecting lives is revealed. With the fragile relationship of our less-than-cordial hosts at breaking point, a rollercoaster of emotions unfolds. Jim Cartwright has written extensively for stage, television and radio with his hugely successful plays performed at the Royal Court Theatre, National Theatre, the West End and on Broadway. They have won numerous awards, including the Olivier and Evening Standard awards.

Noël Coward’s

Private Lives Tuesday 30 January – Saturday 3 February London Classic Theatre presents a major new touring production of Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy. Strong passions and even stronger personalities set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. 1930. Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences. Full of razor-sharp wit and quick-fire dialogue, Private Lives is Noël Coward’s most popular and enduring stage comedy. Extraordinarily written in only three days, Private Lives originally opened at London’s Phoenix Theatre in August 1930 to packed houses. Since then, this charming comedy of manners has retained its remarkable appeal, captivating audiences all over the world.

Gecko

The Wedding Thursday 8 – Saturday 10 February, 7.30pm

We are all married, bound by a contract. But what are the terms of this relationship? And can we consider a divorce? Led by Amit Lahav, Gecko’s latest creation is inspired by the complexities of human nature: the struggle between love and anger, creation and destruction, community and isolation. In a blur of wedding dresses and contractual obligations, their extraordinary ensemble of international performers guide audiences through a dystopian world in which we are all brides, wedded to society. Combining movement, imagery and provocative narratives in the company’s trademark style, Gecko’s seventh touring production brings these contracts into question with an emotionally charged and spectacular performance.

We all want to believe in our journey, but where are we heading? Is it too late to stop, to go back, to fall in love, to start again?

Dave Spikey Juggling on a Motorbike

Count Arthur Strong is Alive and Unplugged

Friday 23 February, 7.30pm

Sunday 29 April, 8pm

In 1987, Dave Spikey won the national talent show Stairway to the Stars, with judge Larry Grayson telling him that what clinched the award was Dave’s routine about a juggler on a motorbike. 30 years on, he looks back on his remarkable life and his incredible journey from working-class lad to Chief Biomedical Scientist to much-loved comedy performer and writer via Phoenix Nights, 8 out of 10 Cats, Bullseye, Dead Man Weds, Magnolia, The Royal Variety Show, Parkinson and many more. He often reflects that maybe none of this would have happened and he might still be looking down his microscope if it wasn’t for the juggler on the motorbike.

Alone, solo and by himself, with no one with him, the show business Colossasus (check that) takes us back on a journey through his early career. Using the latest technology and all that (I presume we’ve got a projector?) he will be delving into his own personal box of video cassettes and talking us (you) through the highlights of his glittering TV career, with many of his trademark stories we’ve come to love him for. If you only buy one ticket for something this year make sure it’s this and bring someone with you. You won’t be disappointed by him (me). “A relentless blast of comic surprises” The Times “A laugh-out-loud absurdity, subtly slapstick in both word and deed, from this perfectly-realised fool.” Chortle

Finding Nana

Saturday 24 March, 8pm This autobiographical play written by the joint winner of the George Devine Most Promising Playwright Award 2016, Finding Nana is set in a seaside hotel of childhood summers. This autobiographical play by award-winner Jane Upton journeys back to find a beloved Nana before she forgot who she was. Following hit plays Bones, Swimming and All the Little Lights, Finding Nana is about the universal, unconditional love between a granddaughter and her Nana and the desperate need to capture memories before they disappear. George Devine Most Promising Playwright 2016 “Brilliant” ★★★★ ThreeWeeks Age guide: 14+

What Happened to Vandal Raptor? Friday 20 April, 8pm Punk poet Henry Raby celebrates 40 Years of Punk Rock by breathing life into the spiky spirit of resistance. He tells the tale of the fictional band, Vandal Raptor (the greatest 4-piece dinosaur-themed punk band), as they snarled through songs, snapped strings and sang about changing the world until… they broke up. Using spoken word, poetry, live music and raw storytelling, this is a show about rebellion, growing up and friendship. Age guide: 16+

fingersmiths in co-production with The New Wolsey Theatre

Up ‘n’ Under Friday 9 & Saturday 10 March

The Wheatsheaf Arms amateur rugby league team has never won a game. They don’t have enough players and they have no kit. Can Arthur, our hero, coach them to win in a cup final? They need to beat Reg’s team The Cobblers Arms who are top of the league, superbly fit, physically enormous and terrify every team they play. But how does Arthur train his new team? They are Deaf, he doesn’t sign and he only has 5 weeks to get his team into shape or he loses his house in the bet. This fast-moving and witty re-telling of John Godber’s award-winning and much-loved play, Up ’n’ Under, will delight audiences, bringing together fingersmiths’ visual and physical storytelling with a cast of Deaf and hearing actors using British Sign Language and spoken English.

Written by John Godber “This is a production that sharpens your hearing by making you see language..” ★★★★ The Guardian on Frozen “An extraordinary play... groundbreaking theatre” ★★★★ The Stage on Frozen All performances are Audio Described and British Sign Language Interpreted, with some captioned (see page 37).
