Discover Derby Theatre: A Learning Theatre Our doors are open – come and find out more! Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2018 Learning Programme. Here at Derby Theatre, we provide unique access to our building, staff and creative teams to support learning right across the curriculum. Our exciting programme of workshops, shows and bespoke projects will inspire young people to engage with a whole range of subjects from English to Science. We offer an exciting hands-on approach to understanding the wide range of careers in theatre, led by all of our staff who are trained to share their skills with others. We can also give you special access to practitioners from the whole theatre-making process, from designer to director, writer to actor, who will help students explore and understand texts, theatrical concepts and processes. On our main stage this Spring, we’re thrilled to be staging Jim Cartwright’s classic comedy, Two, which features brilliant and colourful interrelating stories from 14 characters, played by just 2 actors. We are also offering the very best in visiting companies, like the internationally renowned physical theatre company, Gecko, with their new show: The Wedding. We offer Arts Awards and can support you on your Artsmark journey. We also work in partnership with QUAD, Déda, Baby People, Derby Museums, Sinfonia ViVA, Derby and Derbyshire Music partnership, Artcore and EMCCAN to provide you with a one-stop shop for all of your creative and cultural learning requirements. You can choose from a wide range of projects and programmes on offer or contact us to develop something bespoke for your learners. See the Cultural Campus section for details. Early Years & Primary Discover Day

(with optional Arts Award) Discover and do with the professionals Spend a day at the theatre and learn new skills. Discover everything from costume and set design to lighting. Accessible and fun! See back stage and make your own mini-production to be performed on stage. You can even get your Arts Award Discover in a day! Backstage Tour A great introduction to theatre From the dressing rooms to the fly floor, come and take a look into the back-stage world of theatre. This will help towards your Arts Award. Duration: 1 hour Max pupils: 30


Story Explorers We take some of the best-loved books for this age range as a starting point (e.g. The Tiger That Came To Tea, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt or Paper Dolls). Using imaginative play, storytelling, movement and drama games, this session brings these stories to life and helps the children to infer deeper meaning. Brilliant for developing communication, social skills, self confidence, self-expression and group work.

They enable students to read between the lines and unlock the language and stories of Shakespeare inspiring their learning about one of the most influential playwrights of all time. You can choose from the following workshops which can be tailored to your learning objectives: First Encounter Workshop: An introduction to a Shakespeare play Exploration Workshop: A deeper study of a Shakespeare play Suitable for: KS1 and 2 Duration: Up to 2 hours

EARLY YEARS & PRIMARY

The following sessions develop essential literacy skills, including reading between the lines, ideas generation and role play. They can be school or theatre-based.

Topics Get Active! From the Ancient Egyptians to powerful planets… These practical sessions focus on a topic of your choice and support teamwork and confidence-building, culminating in a short performance that will help their learning of this subject come to life. Two Fri 2 March – Saturday 24 March Derby Theatre raises a glass with the brilliant comic two-hander. 1 pub. 14 different characters. 2 actors. In a pub in the North of England a bickering landlord and landlady take orders from the locals. As a range of colourful characters pull up a stool, the rich tapestry of their interconnecting lives is revealed. With the fragile relationship of our less-than-cordial hosts at breaking point, a rollercoaster of emotions unfolds.

Two Playback A chance to see key moments from the play replayed with input from the student audience to help explore character, story and production elements. Helps GCSE and A level students with their live theatre review. When: Wednesday 21 March, after the 2.30pm performance Duration: 45 minutes (including short break)

Arts Award ‘Discover’ in a Day

with actors from the show: Sean McKenzie and Jo Mousley A practical workshop which helps students to understand the array of characters and how our actors approached the creation of them. Students will even get the chance to become director themselves,

For primary and secondary schools: termly networking and CPD sessions. This practical training is for teachers of English, Drama and Performing Arts and for those who want to develop their use of drama as a tool for engaging learning across the curriculum.

Hansel & Gretel Relaxed Performance SAVE THE DATE

Thursday 3 January at 2pm Schools Earlybird Offer! Make a schools’ reservation by Friday 30 March 2018 (payment required by Friday 28 September 2018) and get them for just £9 each (normally £10.50). Plus one free teacher’s seat for every 10 booked (available for Schools performances). We invite you to join us for this special performance for people who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment, including people with an Autism Spectrum Condition, sensory and communication disorders or a learning disability. There is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement, a ‘chill-out’ space and some small changes made to the light and sound effects. Families and schools welcome.

Spring CPD Session Shakespeare Masterclass Creative Literacy Join us for a Shakespeare Masterclass with Alix Manning-Jones, who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse on their schools’ Shakespeare programmes. This workshop will explore a range of texts using practical approaches to unlock Shakespeare’s language for you to use back in the classroom with your students. It will also support your teaching practice in helping students to access Shakespeare’s text, develop a greater understanding and enjoyment of his plays. This can be used to help prepare students for their GCSE/A Level examinations. Suitable for: Teachers of KS2 and KS2+ When: Wednesday 28 February, 4.30pm until 6.30pm. Cost: £10 a teacher

Derby Theatre is proud to be an Arts Award centre with qualified advisors. Arts Award inspires young people to grow their arts and leadership talents: it’s creative, valuable and accessible. Arts Award can be achieved at five levels, four qualifications and an introductory award. Arts Award Discover is the introductory award open to children and young people aged up to 25. Arts Award Explore is an Entry Level 3 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). It is the perfect stepping stone from our introductory award, Arts Award Discover, to the Level 1 qualification, Bronze Arts Award. Anyone aged up to 25 can take part in Arts Award. Arts Award Explore is designed for ages 7 plus. Arts Award Bronze is a Level 1 award on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Young people take part in an arts activity they enjoy, go to an arts event, research their arts inspiration and share their skills with others. Bronze is available to young people aged 11 to 25. Arts Award Silver is a Level 2 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Doing Silver involves achieving an arts challenge, reviewing arts events, researching artists and arts organisations, and delivering an arts leadership project with other people.

Arts Award Gold is the highest level, at Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), and develops young people’s creativity, communication, planning, teamwork and leadership skills. The award is also recognised on the UCAS Tariff. Gold has been designed for young people aged 16 to 25. We can help you achieve your award with Arts Award Discover in a Day. Artsmark

Artsmark is a special badge of quality for your school awarded by Arts Council England and designed by teachers. The new Artsmark award will help schools to deliver a high-quality arts and cultural education and provides an excellent way to demonstrate this. Across the country Artsmark is rewarding more and more schools for championing arts and culture across the curriculum. Any school setting can apply. Gecko’s

The Wedding Thursday 8 February Saturday 10 February We are all married, bound by a contract. But what are the terms of this relationship? And can we consider a divorce? Led by Amit Lahav, Gecko’s latest creation is inspired by the complexities of human nature: the struggle between love and anger, creation and destruction, community and isolation. Combining movement, imagery and provocative narratives in the company’s trademark style, Gecko’s seventh touring production brings these contracts into question with an emotionally-charged and spectacular performance.

School/College-based workshops Gecko’s workshops, led by one of their highly-experienced company members, serve as an introduction to physical theatre, whilst exploring the company’s innovative devising process and method for creating movement for performance. National Dance Company Wales Why not join us for an interactive matinee with National Dance Company Wales, open to schools and other audience members. Pilot Theatre School Project Brighton Rock – Play in a week An exciting creative engagement project linked to the show, exploring students’ creative response to Brighton Rock by focusing on key scenes and extracts, exploring themes, characters and plot.

Birdsong Monday 11 June - Saturday 16 June Marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Birdsong is the hit, critically acclaimed stage show based on the world famous novel by Sebastian Faulks. DERBY’S CULTURAL EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP & VISITING COMPANIES

This series of five exciting and practical workshops could take place during curriculum time (Drama, English, Media Studies) or as a lunchtime or after-school project. The project would culminate in an interactive theatrical event performed by students, exploring the underworld of this exciting thriller. This will be an amazing opportunity to work closely with Pilot Theatre’s artistic team including with film makers and script writers, to create something unique and very special.

CPD Sessions We can deliver in-school CPD sessions for your staff on a range of art forms including creative, literacy, music, dance, digital learning, carnival arts or critical thinking. All sessions can be tailored to suit your school’s objectives.
