Fernhill School Term 1 in Primary 1

Learning Overview Literacy This term we will be learning our phonics and using

them to blend and decode words. Your child will talk about letters being the code for the relevant sounds.

We will also be forming each letter learned and taking part in writing these and then forming words with the relevant letters.

Your child is bringing home a reading book with pictures and then once we have a bank of codes we will start reading books with words. The aim is to always be able to decode the words and not just learn them by sight. Your child will bring home story strips about different animals for you to discuss which will then be used for our weekly story writing activity.

Numeracy In Numeracy we will focus on forming the numbers 010 as well as matching and addition. We will talk about the numbers ‘before’ and ‘after’. The children also take part in problem solving activities for the numbers 0-10 on the smartboard. We will be using jotters to form the numbers and to practise the layout of addition sums as well as workbooks books for daily written mathematical activities. We will also be completing Numeracy activities on our computing devices.

Interdisciplinary Learning Our topic in Term 1 will be Scottish Myths and Legends. We will be exploring mythical creatures and where they originate from. We will then look at Scottish traditions connected with these stories. We will also be using our imagination to create our own creatures.

Religious Education In our first term in Primary 1 we will be learning the prayers which we say throughout the day. The Sign of the Cross, Morning Offering, Grace before Meals, Grace after Meals and Evening Prayer. We will also visit the previous Sunday’s Gospel and share the meaning of these stories. The children will also be learning about and their uniqueness and God-given talents.

Health and Wellbeing Our focus in Health and Wellbeing will be encouraging each other to be able to express feelings and the ability to be able to talk about them. We will also learn that friendship, caring, sharing, fairness, equality and love are important in building positive relationships. These lessons will also take place through outdoor learning.

Modern Languages Students are introduced to the Italian language and Italian culture through activity-based talk and play. Focus is upon the students’ immediate experiences through familiar games, routines, songs, books, and digital media. Students write and read simple sentences and respond to questions about self and family. Students use pictures, gestures, and props to assist their understanding.

I Saluti/Greetings Name and age, Italy/Map: Capital. The Italian flag, Numbers 1-10, Weather/ Seasons of the year, Hallowe’en, The Christmas story, songs, and traditions.

Music As singing has been prohibited for so long it will be wonderful to once again fill the school with song! The children will also be learning singing games and rhymes, following the principles of Zoltan Kodaly. He believed that music is for everyone, and that singing should be the foundation of music education. We will be having a lot of fun in our lessons, and hopefully the children will be able to share some of the songs and games with you at home!

Our activities will be focussing on developing skills in the following areas; speech and language, phonological awareness, literacy and numeracy, motor skills, listening, and social interaction.

PE The pupils will be participating n Active Play during PE this term. This allows a diverse range of activities to be used where the focus is on games and play to develop the students fitness, hand eye coordination and fine & gross motor skills. Many of the tasks will put the pupils into situations where they must work together with their peers, providing the opportunity to improve their social skills.
