Jokes A husband was advised by his psychiatrist to assert himself. "You don't have to let your wife henpeck you. Go home and show her you're the boss." The man was on fire with enthusiasm and couldn't wait to try the doctor's advice! He rushed home, slammed the door, shook his fist in his wife's face, and growled, "From now on, you're taking orders from me. I want my supper right now, and when you get it on the table, go upstairs, and lay out my best clothes. Tonight, I'm going out with the boys and you're going to stay home where you belong. And another thing...you know who's going to comb my hair, iron my pants, polish my shoes and tie my tie?"

"I certainly do," said his wife calmly, "The undertaker." Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents the week before Christmas. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. "I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE..." "I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO..." "I PRAY FOR A NEW VCR..." His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." To which the little brother replied, "No, but Granny is!"

A husband and wife came for counseling after 15 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing every problem they had ever had in the 15 years they had been married. She went on and on and on: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of unmet needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, 'This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?' The husband thought for a moment and replied, 'Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I golf.'

A young man called his mother and announced excitedly that he had just met the woman of his dreams. Now what should he do?

His mother had an idea: "Why don't you send her flowers, and on the card invite her to your apartment for a homecooked meal?" He thought this was a great strategy, and arranged a date for a week later. His mother called the day after the big date to see how things had gone. "The evening was a disaster," he moaned. "Why, didn't she come over?" asked his mother. "Oh, she came over, but she refused to cook...."

A policeman stops a lady and asks for her license. He says "Lady, it says here that you should be wearing glasses." The woman answered "Well, I have contacts." The policeman replied "I don't care who you know! You're getting a ticket!"

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother gently rubbed cold cream on her face. "Why are you rubbing cold cream on your face, Mommy?" he asked. "To make myself beautiful," said his mother. A few minutes later, she began removing the cream with a tissue. "What's the matter?" asked Little Johnny. "Giving up?"

Feeding wild birds Winter is on the way back in again and while we are stocking up on oil and solid fuel to keep ourselves warm throughout the winter, spare a thought for the birds that will be staying throughout the winter and struggling to find food and water. Birds need to keep their body fat up to keep warm through the unforgiving weather, so plenty of food should be put out to help some of nature's most beautiful creatures. Wild bird seed, peanuts and sunflower seed can found in local supermarkets and garden shops, as can the special wire or plastic feeders that they should be put in; these feeders can then be suspended from tree branches or a bird table. Apples, whether cut in half and speared on branches or just left out whole on the lawn, are also a great source of food, particularly for Blackbirds and other members of the thrush family, as well as Blackcaps (small warblers that have only recently begun to spend the winter in Ireland). Kitchen scraps, such as bacon rinds, cheese (particularly loved by Robins), suet, raisins, moistened bread, melon seeds, fruit, stale cake, cooked potato, oatmeal, fresh coconut and uncooked pastry, also make welcome meals.

etable containers, and meat trimmings, bacon rinds and other scraps will also be eaten. Melted fat may be poured over bread or cake scraps to make “bird cake”. There are a couple of items which should never be fed to birds. These include desiccated (dried) coconut, uncooked rice or dry bread, which may swell up in the bird’s stomach. It is equally as important to ensure that your garden birds have a constant supply of fresh drinking water, something that can be very hard for them to find when ponds and puddles are frozen over. As well as needing to drink it, they also need it for bathing, to ensure that their feathers are kept clean so that they will insulate them effectively against the cold weather. A simple bird-bath can be made from an inverted dustbin lid sunk into the ground; remember to keep the surface ice free.

As the birds become dependant on the food you put out for them and expend their energy getting to the garden, it is important to keep up putting out food for them as they may not have the energy to go looking elsewhere. Get the children involved. Identifying the birds will provide the children with hours of Fat is an especially important source free fun and education as well as enof energy for birds, so please don’t couraging them to take an interest in waste it! Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween. By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (f

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

rom Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honour the dead. It was cele-

brated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Lighting is ever so important is the dining area - both for setting an atmosphere and ensuring that it is neither too bright nor too dark. The dining area should be well-lit but not glaringly so. You should be able to see what you are eating and see your dining companions clearly, yet if the lighting is too bright it will remove all atmosphere from an evening meal. A dimmer switch is the dining room is a good idea as the lighting can then be varied depending on the time of day and the mood one wants to create. Free standing lamps on dimmer switches placed at different heights around the room will provide variety and atmosphere. Another good option is using rise-and-fall lighting whereby the light is situated above the table and can be lowered or raised. Another suggestion is to supplement the electric lighting with candles on the table for a seductive glow and atmosphere. Many houses now have a kitchen-diner rather than having a separate dining room. Kitchens require task lighting so you can see clearly what you are doing when you are preparing and cooking food. However, the eating area should be relaxed and intimate, hence a dimmer switch for that area is an excellent idea - and lighting can create a cosier atmosphere if there are lamps on a sideboard or candles on the table. Furniture Furniture in a dining room is often restricted to the dining table and chairs along with a side table or sideboard. With the popularity of wooden floors, the only soft furnishing in the dining room might be the curtains or blinds, hence, dining rooms are often lacking in texture which means they look bare and cold and hence unwelcoming. All

they need is a few finishing touches to transform them. Any decorative items on a sideboard will add interest but what really adds effective finishing touches are ’living’ items such as a floral arrangement, a flowering plant, even realistic artifical flowers will bring the sense that this is an often-used and welcoming part of the home. Lamps or candles on a sideboard or mantelpiece will also add to the homely atmosphere. Think about how you would like to add to the soft furnishings and texture in the room - be it a tablecloth and linen napkins, cushions or fabric on the chairs, a rug on the floor or artwork on the walls. Relaxed Dining A dining room doesn’t have to be formal - create an informal, welcoming atmosphere with a bunch of country garden flowers loosely arranged in a jug along with simple, rustic French dinnerware and rekindle the art of conversation over a bottle of wine. Simple napkin rings and a single candle in a small hurricane lamp are endearingly simple and effective for adding a special finishing touch to your lunch or dinner table.

World Record Attempt in Tullamore Thrill The World Offaly A large crowd of over 100 ‘zombies’ took part in a World Record attempt in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Thrill the World is a worldwide record attempt for the Largest Simultaneous Dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Thousands of people in cities around the world have learned the Thriller dance and performed it precisely at the same time.

Thrill The World Offaly was in aid of The Carers Association, a national voluntary body headquartered in Tullamore that helps people who care at home for loved ones who are elderly and frail, seriously ill, people with disabilities and children with special needs. Over 160,000 people in Ireland give care at home every day to somebody who needs their help.

Local Tourism The Rock of Dunamase The Rock of Dunamase (the Fort of Masc), is one of the most historic sites in Ireland dating back many hundreds of years. It was first settled in the 9th century but was attacked by the Vikings of Dublin, the Abbot of Terryglass was killed in the raid. When the Normans arrived in the late 1100's, Dunamase became the most important Anglo-Norman fortification in Laois. It was part of the dowry of Aoife, the daughter of Diarmuid Mac Murrough, King of Leinster, when she was given in marriage to the Norman conqueror Strongbow in 1170. Strongbow's daughter and heir, Isabel married into the Marshal family. William Marshal who became Regent of England in the minority of Henry III had five sons, all of whom died without children. His daughter Eve, inherited the castle which passed into the Mortimer family but in 1330, the castle was forfeited to the crown on the execution of Roger Mortimer for treason. It has an uneventful history then until the Cromwellian army is supposed

to have blown it up to prevent it being used against them during the Cromwellian Wars. In 1795, Sir John Parnell, chancellor of the Irish Parliament, tried to develop a residence and banqueting hall at Dunamaise. All the late medieval features such as windows and doors were taken from other ruins and added to the castle at this time. When Parnell died, his son allowed the buildings to fall into decay, the state in which it has remained to this day. It is still well worth a visit as it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It is open daily during daylight hours and has visitor facilities and a car park. It is located in County Laois, the site is a short distance from the N80 road, between the towns of Portlaoise and Stradbally.
