Jokes A couple was dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on the phone line, covered their pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had put out into the yard scoots back into the house. They don't want the cat shut in the house because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to

the taxi while the husband goes inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, the man in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, the wife doesn't want the driver to know the house will be empty for the night. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon "He's just going upstairs to say good-bye to my mother." A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab. "Sorry I took so long," he says, as they drive away. "Stupid thing was hiding under the bed." Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to

come out! She tried to take off so I grabbed her by the neck. Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!" The cabdriver hit a parked car...

A married couple in their early 60s were out celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant. Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table and said, "For being such an exemplary married couple and for being faithful to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish. "Ooh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband." said the wife. The fairy moved her magic stick and - abracadabra! - two tickets for the new QM2 luxury liner appeared in her hands. Now it was the husbands turn. He thought for a moment and said: "Well this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this only occurs once in a lifetime, so, I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me." The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish... So the fairy made a circle with her magic stick and -abracadabra! - the husband became 92 years old. The moral of this story: "Fairies are female."

A tom cat and a tabby cat were courting on a back fence at night. The tom leaned over to the tabby with pent up passion and purred... "I'll die for you!" The tabby gazed at him from under lowered eye lids and asked, "How many times?"

A man told his doctor, "I don't think my wife's hearing is as good as it used to be. What should I do?" The doctor replied, "Try this test first. When your wife is at the sink doing dishes, stand fifteen feet behind her and ask her a question. If she doesn't respond, keep moving closer, asking the same question until she hears you." He went home and saw his wife preparing dinner. Standing fifteen feet behind her, he said, "What's for dinner, honey?" Hearing no reply, he moved up to ten feet behind her and repeated the question. Still no reply, so he moved to five feet. Still no answer. Finally he stood directly behind her and said, "Honey, what's for dinner tonight?" "FOR THE FOURTH TIME, I SAID CHICKEN, You'd better get your hearing checked!"

centre of learning, commerce and agriculture, and for a time, became the site of the Bishop's see until under Norman influence in the twelfth century, the see was transferred from Aghaboe to Kilkenny.

Aghaboe Abbey was founded in the 6th century by St. Canice, an abbot, monastic founder, priest and missionary and is one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He is traditionally credited with the elimination of the Druidic rule in ireland. The last Archdruid of Ireland had retired with his council to a mound in Kilkenny for safety. St. Canice led an army there and overcome them. He found a monastery near what is now the Church of Ireland's St. Canice's Cathedral. He spend a lot of time in Ossory where he had a good repute with the King, Colmann who gave him grants of land including Aghaboe (the field of the Ox), where he founded the Abbey and Monastery. It grew into a major

In 1346, Diamaid mac Giollaphadraig burned the town of Aghaboe and the church, completely destroying St. Canice's shrine and bones and relics. It was rebuilt as an Augustinian Priory and today a Church of Ireland dating from the 1700's stands where the priory once stood. There are the ruins of a Dominican Friary founded in 1382 by Finghan MacGillapatrick, Lord of Ossory also on the site. A tree-covered remains of a Norman Motte can also be seen. The Norman's would have built a wooden tower on top of the steep-sided mound of earth to store arms and keep watch for attack.

Dorrie Killeen tells the story of the 100 year old Herbal Remedy In 1890, a young teacher, Annie Murray, whose family was from Rathmoylan Co. Meath took up a post in a south Co Roscommon national school a few miles west of Lough Ree. She later married a local man Thomas Feeley and Roscommon was to become her home for life near the shores of Lough Rea. She brought with her a recipe for a substance made from herbs, oils, and salts that had been used by her family for generations for the relief of muscular pains and aches. She kept this recipe and old traditional remedies made from herbs in her medical book titled ‘The Household Physician’ by J. McGregor-Robertson, with her name and the date on it (June 1893) which remained her medical bible all her long healthy life. In this book, treatments were mostly old traditional remedies usually made up at the local chemist known then as the apothecary. Some families had their own secret remedies that were handed down from generation to generation. She also had some recipes recorded in her book by a famous herbalist in New Zealand. James Neil, she got from a family member living in New Zealand. James Neil also had qualifications in medicine and surgery. Annie was my grandmother whom I loved dearly and had the privilege of looking after her in her later years. I remember her making up this old remedy. I used to rub it on her neck, shoulders, back and knees in her last years of life (1954-55). She was 91 years old. She always used to say to me you keep that book Dorrie.

those days water was got from spring wells and I remember our spring well it was beside our apple trees surrounded by a hedge of Whitethorn and Willow trees. Now we are importing Spring Willow Water from England. I am sure we could find those old wells and have our own Spring Willow Water. We have our spring well and it surrounded by willows and other large trees and ‘The Rub’ is made with this water and we use it for our drinking water.

I was always interested in herbs or weeds as we called them as children but my grandmother used to say they are all there for a reason and God gave us the intelligence to find that reason. For every illness she used to say ‘a herb grows nearby’. Back in

Over the years I maintained an interest in herbs, I always felt there was something in my life I wanted to do, but as a publican / farmer’s wife with five children I had little time to study. In the early 1990’s I was going through my grandmother’s old medical book looking for information and I came across the recipe for the aches and pains and I thought of an elderly man named Tommie who came to our shop regularly and had a lot of pain in his ankles and wrist, arising from an accident where a gate fell on him some years earlier, his tablets were not relieving the pain. I made up my grandmother’s formula and gave it to Tommie and told him to rub it on warm with his fingertips every few hours. He came back the following evening all excited to thank me, his pain had eased considerably and the inflammation had gone down. I felt such a sense of well-being having helped someone in this way, I remembered my grandmother’s words about herbs they are all there for a reason and I simply called the recipe ‘THE RUB’

The training is focusing on customers - knowing what they want and meeting their needs and of course making a profit by running a more effective and efficient tourism business. Programme content will include; marketing your business/destination, customer service, presenting your product, writing for business (brochures & business website), creating and managing your own website and developing networks. We will also explore the opportunities that all of these elements present for Offaly tourism businesses in the future. A number of site visits have also been planned to tourist destinations and attractions within Offaly and beyond. These visits will focus on increasing participants’ knowledge of Offaly’s heritage and attractions while visits outside the county will focus on best practice learning from other parts of the country. VW Passat BlueMotion breaks world record, 1,527 miles on one tank! A standard Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion has covered a world record-breaking 1,527 miles on a single tank of fuel with the Guinness World Records Organisation officially recognising this as a world-beating distance! Driven on public roads in France and Britain by Sunday Times journalist Gavin Conway, the Volkswagen averaged 45mph and 89.83mpg over three days. The Passat Bluemotion’s official, combined economy figure is 64.2mpg. It cost just over six pence per mile to complete a distance equivalent to driving from London to Malaga. The Passat Bluemotion is a standard production car that has a stop and start technology, a 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, a transmission geared for econo-

my, aerodynamic changes including a lower ride height, and special tyres.

Earlier this year Volkswagen launched BlueMotion specific eco-friendly models in Ireland in three of their top selling cars, the Polo, Golf and Passat resulting all three BlueMotions becoming the world’s most fuel-efficient models in their respective classes. Rivals for the Passat Bluemotion include the Vauxhall Insignia Ecoflex and Ford Mondeo Econetic. The Passat’s run was overseen by the AA, and breaks a record set in 2002 when an Australian couple drove a Peugeot 406 1,459 miles on one tank of fuel. Offaly Community Games Sees Revamped County Executive after 2010 AGM Offaly Community Games held their AGM on Tuesday 19th October last at The Bridge House Hotel Tullamore. All areas were represented on the night and the meeting was also attended by National Games Director Mr. Conal Duffy, National Youth Officer and Offaly native Kevin Doyle and HSE Community Games Development Officer Paul Friel, who will be playing a vital role in the development of Community Games and the re-establishment of areas within the county during the coming year.

having being absent from the county structure over the past year due to commitments at national level and work he was delighted to see such a large attendance at the meeting and particularly that of so many faces that he didn’t recognise. He said that this was evidence that a number of new people have come on board and these new volunteers working in partnership with some of the more seasoned personal would lead Offaly Community Games into a stronghold position on the Community Games Scene.

Chairperson Kieran D’Arcy opened the meeting and began by welcoming everyone in attendance. In his report addressing the performance of Offaly Community Games during the past year, Kieran paid tribute to the fantastic performances from all our representatives at provincial and national level. In addressing the meeting he acknowledged the children that took part at area and county level, he outlined that these children are the grass roots of the organisation and that the more children we have involved at this level the better games will be into the future.

The formalities of the night then got underway and the outgoing committee were thanked for their hard work and commitment over the past year.

National Games director Conal Duffy spoke briefly and reiterated the chairpersons sentiments in relation to getting children involved at area and county level. He also outlined that the structure of community games is currently being reviewed and encouraged everyone to embrace the change that lies ahead, which he hopes will help us to fully live up to the original ethos outlined by community games when it was set up all those years ago and to introduce children to sporting and cultural activities. In his address to the meeting National Youth Director Kevin Doyle noted that

The newly elected executive for the year 2010/2011 is as follows:

Chairperson: Kieran D'Arcy, Ferbane Parish Vice Chair: Breda Mann, Daingean Secretary: Catherine Barry, Birr

Youth Officer: Louise Gorman, Kilcormac/Killoughey Children's Officer: Bridgee Murphy, Gracefield/Walsh Island NEAC Delegate: Jude Feehan, Ferbane Parish Development Committee: Nicoal Lalor. Shinrone/Coolderry Ita Daly, Killeigh Carmel Doyle, Ferbane Parish Patricia Keegan, Gracefield/Walsh Island Paul Friel- HSE Community Games Development Officer

Delegates to national AGM- Jude Feehan, Bridgee Murphy, Mona O'Reilly Observers to National AGM- Kieran D'Arcy, Carmel Doyle Delegates to Leinster- Dominic Sheehy, Kieran D'Arcy

Asst. Secretary: Nicola Lalor, Shinrone/Coolderry Treasurer: Patricia Keegan, Gracefield/Walsh Island PRO: Carmel Doyle, Ferbane Parish Games Director: Anne Rawlinson Kilcormac/Killoughey Games Committee: Mona O'Reilly Robert Buckley, Rhode Jude Feehan, Ferbane Parish A.N.O.- Killeigh

This newly elected executive represents a mixture experience and enthusiasm. Through working together with the help of each area committee we can build on the fantastic foundations laid over the past year. We are asking that anyone who is interested in becoming involved in Community Games please feel free to contact us or visit our new Facebook page at

Offaly Community Games Youth attend National Training and Development Weekend Youth members of Offaly Community Games attended a weekend of fun and training recently hosted by the national youth committee at Birr Outdoor Education Centre. With youth representatives from County’s Limerick, Wexford, Offaly, Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Cavan and Galway it saw a mixture of seasoned and new faces embrace on a weekend filled with challenge, excitement and team building. HSE Community Games Integration Officer Cathriona Reynolds had the youth volunteers up bright and early on the Saturday morning as she delivered an excellent course in relation to interculturalism with all in attendance participating fully. The afternoon session saw Eammon Murray deliver a hugely beneficial course in relation to safety and fire safety something which all volunteers need to be fully aware of and each county represented at the weekend can feel much safer as a result of one of their volunteers having taken part in this course.

With the intense course work completed the “youth” then participated in activities including a blindfolded night trail and dawned their wet suits early on Sunday morning before abseiling off the side of a cliff at Cadamstown before gorge walking their way back to dry land. This is only a brief outline of some of the activities engaged in but it is safe to say that all in attendance had a lot of fun and learned a lot that can be taken back to area and county level.

disruptive to a relationship, but not necessarily destructive. The death may sharpen previous differences between parents if any existed. The emotional emptiness and loss of energy can lead to a decrease in sexual intimacy. The same decrease may not be similar in the case of both parents and this can lead to disharmony. Sometimes the grief of parents is so great that it affects their ability to parent their other children. If parents find any type of distress difficult, they may not have the resources to look after their other children and cope with their own needs. Sometimes parents give the name of the dead child to a new baby and this can hinder the new child from forging their own identity. Replacement expectation simply adds to the pain of the bereavement. Every child is unique and irreplaceable. A further reason for different grief responses is the type of child death. For example, a child may be an adult and I have seen aged parents mourning the sudden death of their 50-year-old son. Such parents may feel that they have lost a friend as well as a child. At the other end of the scale there are cot deaths, miscarriages, stillbirths, and abortions. With regard to infant/cot death, the unique grieving experience is complicated by the suddenness of an apparently healthy infant dying and by the possible guilt and blame arising from the fact that the cause of such deaths may be unknown. This can lead to prolonged search for the reason of the death. Parents may be conscious of suspicion within the family, or among neighbours, of neglect on their part. Infant death evokes much sympathy from society but a miscarriage, and perhaps a stillbirth, is less noticed, so that a

By Jim O’Shea mother may experience a sense of isolation that sharpens her grief. She may experience worries about future pregnancies, a sense of failure, anger at herself and, perhaps, anger at her partner. A miscarriage is a shattering of the expectation of birth itself and the lack of a ritual, e.g. a funeral, can add to the isolation. Some mothers are not even hospitalised for a miscarriage and this can diminish the loss and add to the grief. It is important to remember that a mother bonds with their unborn child in the first stages of pregnancy. It is equally important to remember that both parents grieve at this loss. There are a great range of emotions arising from a miscarriage, with grief complications arising from the fusion of the experiences of birth and death. Parents may search for the dead child’s identity and they are faced with the difficult task of mourning someone they did not know, but who is such an intimate part of them. Finally there is the question of an abortion. One of the important points to remember is that a failure to mourn an abortion loss may give rise to delayed grieving in the context of a later loss. Failure to grieve an abortion loss is very much an individual response and may be influenced by such aspects as relationship with parents, culture and religious upbringing. Some women simply put it out of their minds and get on with life, experiencing a surface feeling of relief. (continued in next issue) Jim O’Shea works as a counsellor from Furze, Thurles.
