The man replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words." The woman considered his proposition for a moment, and then slowly removed €20 note from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address. She looked deeply and passionately into his eyes, barely concealing her anticipation and excitement, and slowly and meaningfully said.... "Clean my house.

It's a sunny morning in the Big Forest and the Bear family is just waking up. Baby Bear goes downstairs and sits in his small chair at the table. He looks into his small bowl. It is empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he squeaks. Daddy Bear arrives at the table and sits in his big chair. He looks into his big bowl. It is also empty! "Who's been eating my porridge?" he roars. Mommy Bear points her finger through the door from the kitchen and yells, "For Pete's sake, how many times do we have to go through this? It was Mommy Bear who got up first. It was Mommy Bear who woke everybody else in the house up. It was Mommy Bear who unloaded the dishwasher from last night and put everything away. When a guy's printing on his printer began to grow faint, he called a local repair shop where a friendly man informed him that the printer probably needed only to be cleaned. Because the store charged €50 for such cleanings, he told him he might be better off reading the printer's manual and trying the job himself. Pleasantly surprised by his candor, he asked, "Does your boss know that you discourage business?" "Actually, it's my boss's idea," the employee replied sheepishly. "We usually make more money on repairs if we let people try to fix things themselves first."

Winter Birds - The Robin (Spideog) The Robin (Spideog in Irish), is probably the favourite of all the winter birds. The male and the female have similar plumage with the orange breast while the babies are a spotted brown and white with patches of orange gradually appearing. Robins live to about 1.1 years generally but have been known to survive up to 12 years. They rear 2-3 broods each season and the chicks are fed by both parents. They have a fluting warbling song in the breeding season and often sing into the evening and night leading them to be confused with the Nightingale. The Robin is the only Irish bird that sings continually throughout the winter. Male Robins are noted for their highly aggressive territorial behaviour. They will attack other males that stray into their territories, and have been observed attacking other small birds without apparent provocation. Such attacks sometimes lead to fatalities, accounting for up to 10% of adult Robin deaths in some areas. An old folk tale seeks to explain the Robin's distinctive breast. Legend has it that when Jesus was dying on the cross, the Robin, then simply brown in colour, flew to his side and sang into his ear in order to comfort him in his pain. The blood from his wounds

stained the Robin's breast, and thereafter all Robins got the mark of Christ's blood upon them. Robins first appeared on Christmas cards in the 1860's and the postmen delivering them in their red coats became known as Robins. It was believed that to harm a robin or it's eggs resulted in crooked fingers and a robin entering a house was a sign of forthcoming death while in the southeast of Ireland, a robin entering a house meant impending frost. Robins are one of the friendliest birds and can be encourage to feed from the hand. It is believed that there are about 4 million robins in Ireland and they eat worms, seeds, fruits and insects.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.... A duck walks into a bar and orders a beer and a sandwich. The bartender looks at him and says, "But you're a duck." "I see your eyes are working," replies the duck. "And you talk!" exclaims the bartender. "I see your ears are working," says the duck, "Now can I have my beer and my sandwich, please?" "Certainly," says the bartender, "sorry about that, it's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?" "I'm working on the building site across the road," explains the duck. So the duck drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, pays and leaves. This continues for 2 weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town. The ringleader of the circus comes into the pub and

the bartender tells him about the incredible talking duck. "Marvelous!" says the ringleader, "get him to come see me." So the next day, the duck comes into the pub. The bartender says, "Hey, Mr Duck, I lined you up with a top job paying really good money!" "Yeah?" says the duck, "Sounds great, where is it?" "At the circus" says the bartender. "The circus?" the duck enquires. "That's right," replies the bartender. "The circus? That place with the big tent? With all the animals? With the big canvas roof with the hole in the middle?" asks the duck. "That's right!" says the bartender. The duck looks confused and asks: "What the heck do they want with a plasterer?"

Did You Know..... Chewing gum was used by the ancient Greeks using the resin of a mastic tree, while the Mayans used Chicle which is the sap from the sapodilla tree. The North American Indians used sap from spruce trees and passed this onto the settlers. In January, 1915, William Wrigley created Doublemint chewing gum. Wrigley

and Henry Fleer added the mint and fruit extracts to a chicle chewing gum which made it popular. Henry Fleer invented the first bubble gum called Blibber-Blubber but it was an employee of his called Walter Diemer who invented the hugely successful pink coloured Double Bubble bubble gum.

What Is Sustainable Energy? Sustainable energy refers to a way we can use and generate energy that is more efficient and less harmful to the environment. Another way of explaining sustainable energy is that it will allow us to meet our present energy needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We can do this by being more efficient in how we use energy in our daily lives and also by increasing the amount of energy that comes from renewable sources such as the wind, the sun, rivers and oceans. What are the benefits of sustainable energy?

The good news is that being sustainable in how you use energy has immediate benefits: • It will save you money on your electricity and heating bills • Your home will be more comfortable and convenient • And you will also be making a vital contribution to reducing climate change Believe it or not, the small actions you take to be more energy efficient in your home can have a very significant impact on improving the environment. The collective efforts of individuals can often be the most powerful of all.

Drumcullen gunning for Leinster glory AFTER numerous postponements due to the weather in late November and throughout December, Drumcullen's eagerly anticipated Leinster Club Junior Hurling Championship Final will go ahead this Sunday in Rath, weather permitting. Paddy Kirwan's side are taking on John Locke's of Kilkenny in the decider which throws in at 2pm. Both teams have had more than two months to prepare for the game as both qualified for the final back on November 14. Drumcullen defeated Delvin in fogbound St Loman's Park in Mullingar by 5-13 to 1-5 while John Locke's had just a point to spare over Adamstown of Wexford with the Kilkenny side prevailing by 0-11 to 0-10. In the previous round Drumcullen had disposed of Dublin side Thomas Davis while John Locke's overcame Laois champions Ballyfin. Drumcullen took a break from training over the Christmas period but were back to the grindstone on New Year's Day in preparation for Sunday's game. Having claimed the Offaly Intermediate title and with it a return to the senior ranks for the coming season, Drumcullen are hoping to continue their winning ways by claiming a first provincial title for the club. Newly crowned Offaly Intermediate Hurler of the Year Conor Gath will lead the Drumcullen challenge and Paddy Kirwan is expected to select his team from a fully fit panel. However there is no doubt that the 'sash' will face a far sterner test this Sunday than they did in the previous rounds of the provincial cam-

paign. This will be the third time since 2000 that Kilkenny and Offaly teams have met in this championship with the Kilkenny teams prevailing on the previous two occasions in 2004 and 2008. It is hoped that a large crowd froma around the county will come out and support Drumcullen on their quest for provincial glory.

Burglaries are not restricted to particular times of the day or the any special season. Thieves are on the constant lookout for easy targets and when they do strike, cause a great deal of distress and insecurity. As always, prevention is better than cure, so it is worth walking around your home and checking on your own security. Windows are obvious entry points. If they are old, it may be worth investing in new windows with locks. They can also come with catches that prevent them being opened more than a few inches. Another advantage of new windows is that they have greater energy efficiency, which can save money in the long run. Door locks should also be checked for efficiency. If they are the old lock, it would be worth replacing them with multiple locking mechanisms. Obstacles are the best form of defence against burglars. If you have patio doors, make sure they are well secured as these are favourite entry points for thieves. Security alarms are also a good idea, but research the alarms first. There is no point in getting an alarm that will

be set off constantly for no reason. An alarm that is connected to a security response unit are a good bet. Be sure an get a professional to install your alarm system. Outdoor sensor lighting is a good deterrent and having good lighting outside the front and back door will enable you to see who is outside. Spy holes and door chains are sensible security devices. Lights on timer switches inside the house will also give the illusion that someone is home, before you actually get home and will also act as a deterrent. If you are unfortunate enough to be burgled, it would be difficult to prove any recovered belongings are actually yours, so it is advisable to mark your belongings if it is possible. For smaller items such as heirlooms or jewellery, take photos of them and keep records about their unique markings. Keep the records separate from the recorded items. If you are still unsure, get in touch with your local security firm, for advice on your own home.

Ballycumber Amateur Drama Group So the cast is chosen and the stage is set for this year’s production, the hilarious farce “Run for your Wife” by Ray Cooney, which promises to be one of the funniest and most ambitious productions yet. “Run for your Wife” will be directed by Brendan Hanamy and will star Chris Murphy, Derek Claffey, Aideen Coughlan, Frances Doyle, Carol Robbins, Brendan Robbins, Michael Hiney & Brendan Scully It is the story of London cab driver John Smith, with two wives, two lives and a very precise schedule for juggling them both. With one wife at home in Streatham and another at home in Wimbledon, and with occupants of the flat upstairs at the latter location. Trouble brews when Smith is mugged and ends up in hospital,

where both of his addresses surface, causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate. Having upset his schedule, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts with his lazy layabout neighbour upstairs in Wimbledon, to explain himself to his wives and two suspicious police officers. The play will take place over two weekends on Saturday 29th & Sunday 30th January in Ballycumber Hall at 8pm and in Tuar Ard, Moate on Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th & Saturday 5th February at 8:30pm. Tickets will be available in Ballycumber on the night and can be reseserved at Tuar Ard on 090 6482042. Tickets are €10 and €8 for students and OAP's.

Pedestrian Safety Although you can’t be responsible for the way people drive, you can take a number of steps to make yourself safer as a pedestrian: * Stop, look and listen * Don’t try to cross the road between parked cars * If possible, cross at a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights * Never cross at a bend * If there is a footpath use it * If there is no footpath, walk/run/jog on the right hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic and keeping as close as possible to the side of the road * Walk no more than two abreast and if the road is narrow or there is heavy traffic, walk in single file More than two-thirds of fatal pedestrian collisions happen at night. Although you can hear a car coming and see its lights, the driver may not see you (and certainly won’t hear you).

the GAA Clubhouse, Geashill. All Members, Officials and anybody interested in helping out with any of the teams for this year are asked to attend. U21 FOOTBALL TRAINING Na Fianna U21 Football Training is due to get underway this week for this year’s U21 Championship campaign with training continuing every week thereafter. For details of training times please contact any of the following members of the management team: Pat Daly, Tom Keogh, Dermot Guinan, John Malone or Paul O’Rourke. All players and intending players are asked to attend.

Over the past couple of weeks, the Committee of Cumann na mBunscol (Primary School G.A.A) have been very busy organising 12 finals in all in both boys and girls Gaelic Football. Cumann na mBunscol chairman Gerry Hickey was more than happy to present the trophies to the deserving captains of each winning team. Division 2 of the boys football was an extra special competition for Cumann na mBunscol, as it honours a teacher who is sadly no longer with us, Colin Dunne was a teacher in Killeigh N.S. who died running a marathon two years ago. We were delighted to have Colin’s family on hand to present the Colin Dunne Cup to Durrow N.S. The Committee of Cumann na mBunscol would like to express our thanks to all members of the Offaly G.A.A. and O’ Connor Park for allowing us to host Finals in their spectacular stadium.

A big thank you is also due to the children for playing Gaelic Games, to their parents and families for their support and to the teachers and coaches who give their time in order to promote sport for young people and future Offaly stars!! Finally a huge thank you to our referees, Martin Walsh, Simon Whelahan, Pat Flemming and Martin Flemming. We would also like to thank the Pipers who lead the children around O’ Connor Park and played the National Anthem before each game. On behalf of the Committee of Cumann na mBunscol, I would like to wish two of our longest serving and most respected teachers, Gerry Hickey of Croghan NS and Liam Broderick of Clonmacnois NS all the best in their retirement. Both men have given immense service to Offaly G.A.A and I’m sure they will continue to do so long into the future.

Running water was in short supply all around Offaly this Christmas but anyone who was experiencing shortages on St Stephen's Day would have done well to visit Ferbane GAA grounds where there was plenty of it flying around the place in balloon format. Such chaos can only of course mean it was time for the annual St Stephen's Day charity event, which this year was a Cycle, jog and obstacle course triathlon in aid of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. The difficult travelling conditions made it awkward for a lot of people to make the journey into Ferbane, however a healthy crowd still showed up and dug deep into their pockets to ensure that almost €1300 was raised for a charity that was hugely relevant to the local community following on the death earlier this year of Stephen Devery of Ballyvora Grove.

The action concluded in the more controlled environments of Gleesons and Hineys later that day, where the Festive Season and spirit of Christmas ensured that further fundraising efforts went really well, thanks in no small part also to the generosity of several sponsors from around the community.

The day's sporting action, which sadly was missed by all the national television networks, involved a cycle from the GAA pitch to the nearby Heritage centre, where bikes and team members had to be brought back down to the pitch by wheelbarrow. A stewards enquiry was called when one team was handicapped with a flat tyre on their barrow, however the steward was busy throwing flour at other teams and so could not give a verdict. Once the teams made their way back to the GAA pitch, a combination of goal targets, netting, tyres and round bales were put in place to make what should have been a simple

Counselling men who batter, and steps that all abusers can take to stop abusing (continued from previous issue) This article is based on how to counsel male abusers, but much of it could be applied to females. It is a big challenge. As a humanistic person-centred counsellor I must put myself in the shoes of the person who comes to me for counselling, and I have to have empathy for them. It is very easy to have empathy with a victim, but not so easy with an abuser. I base my empathy, however, on my belief in the goodness of all human beings (recognising that all people have a shadow side and ugly traits and behaviours), although, as I have said in a previous article, I do not counsel sexual abusers. I would, however, gladly counsel all other types of abusers, not only based on my philosophy, but on the satisfaction of helping an individual overcome and cease abusive behaviour, and in so doing break a cycle and prevent the suffering of victims, and the creation of future abusers. Couple counselling, batterer intervention programmes and anger management courses are sometimes considered as good ways of helping abusers to stop their behaviour. I am not sure what the situation is in Ireland, and I do not know if there are any batterer intervention programmes in this country. It is better to contact the local HSE region to get information on this. At any rate research has shown that batterer intervention programmes have a very low rate of success. They do, however, help batterers be aware of their behaviour, and a batterer can learn in a group setting how abuse hurts their partners and their children. Groups also hold men accountable for their behaviour, and provide a setting for positive change. On the other hand the abuser is surrounded by violent men and may not be inclined to reveal the inner pain that often promotes abusive behaviour. There are anger management programmes available in Ireland but it is strongly and rightly argued that anger management programmes are not the way to treat domestic violence. Abuse may not be based upon anger, although it does have a place in abuse. Anger management programmes may help the abuser control violent behaviour but it will not restore a relationship. Neither is couple counselling a good way to help batterers deal with their abusive behaviour. Very often when the question of violence comes up the abuser becomes defensive, clams up or simply does not return for further sessions. He may also try to control the session and use it as an opportunity to further blame the unfortunate victim. Worse still, the victim’s assertions may arouse his anger further, and leave her open to further more severe abuse at home,

where she is unprotected. On the other hand victims may be afraid to disclose. Further, the fact that the victims have to attend the counselling sessions may give the impression that they are in some way responsible for the abuse. Overall, I believe that couples counselling is unproductive if not dangerous. Individual counselling is vital along with any programmes that are available for abusers. But for successful counselling the therapist must be aware of certain facts. I have said in a previous article that there is a low rate of healing among abusers, and not only must the counsellor be well educated in what abuse is and the characteristics of abusers, but must also be aware of how abusers are likely to behave when being counselled. The first thing for the counsellor to remember is that abusive behaviour is a chronic condition, and it can take years to make a lasting change. It has been estimated that 75% of men in the U.S. who are on supervision continue to assault their partners. One of the aspects that make counselling abusers difficult is that they continue to have contact with their victims. Indeed the victims may love the abusers and see them as good providers, thus reinforcing the tendency in abusers to deny that they are abusers or to minimise it.
