The ocean is vital for human well-being. Covering over two-thirds of the planet, it contains rich biodiverse habitats, provides invaluable ecosystem services, is central to global food security, and absorbs significant amounts of heat and carbon dioxide. The ocean also presents immense opportunities for economic growth, employment and development. The OECD is helping governments reconcile the ever-growing use of marine resources with the need to safeguard and improve the health of ocean ecosystems. The policy analysis and guidance developed by the OECD helps countries to work towards fulfilling their international commitments on the ocean including Sustainable Development Goal 14 on Life below Water, the Convention for Biological Diversity’s Aichi Targets, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
