For this Ultimate Style edition, we are delighted to feature a woman who has been at the forefront of fashion for the past 50 years – designer and entrepreneur, Anna Fendi. One of the founding sisters and driving force of Maison Fendi in her role as Head of Development for all Fendi collections, she has revolutionised the leather and accessories sector, launched Fendi Casa and in 2011 was the first Italian woman to receive the prestigious IWF Hall of Fame Award for her constant work promoting ‘Made in Italy’.

ANNA FEN DI As one of fashion's five most famous sisters, Anna Fendi is a creative TOUR DE FORCE. Defining herself as a CRAFTSWOMAN, over the past four decades she has been instrumental in Fendi's evolution, while also dabbling in everything from VINICULTURE to INTERIOR DESIGN. After a chance encounter with yacht designer Christian Grande, she is on to her next creative adventure

A

fter almost forty years at the creative helm of one of Italy's most prominent fashion houses, it would be more than fair to call Anna Fendi a fashion industry luminary. The elegant octogenarian's creative direction, influence and imagination enabled Fendi to grow into a style empire. She initiated Fendi's 50-plus-year partnership with industry icon Karl Lagerfeld, working alongside him for 30 years. Under her, new lines were born, including Fendi's ready-to-wear collection. She revolutionised the leather and accessories sector, spearheading research into materials and manufacturing.

While she left Fendi’s creative direction in the hands of her daughter Silvia and Lagerfeld in 2001, she continued to expand her creative horizons, launching a selection of wines, exquisite tableware and interior design services. In 2012 she became the first Italian woman to receive the prestigious International Women's Forum Hall of Fame Award in Washington.

Her next challenge? Yacht design.

It was a moment of curiosity that brought Anna Fendi and Christian Grande, fashion and yachting, together. Inspired by his grand Art Nouveau surroundings at Villa Laetitia, the Fendi family's home, Grande was sketching in his notebook, something he is never without. Spying a fellow creative, Fendi interrupted his artistic reverie to find out what he was drawing. They began to chat and the rest, as they say, is history.

The result of this random meeting is an unprecedented collaboration: a new Special Edition 370GT, one of Invictus Yacht's most successful models, with exterior by Grande and interiors by Fendi. "From the beginning the desire to combine our knowledge and put ourselves at stake was born," says Grande. "The encounter between Anna's interior design style and mine on the exterior has created a unique, harmonious yacht."

This may be Fendi's first yacht project, but she is no stranger to boating. "I spent my summers with my family on Ponza island and we have a small beautiful boat where we spend memorable moments together," she says. "Nowadays, the market presents very sophisticated, high-tech boats. The design is always nice, but

sometimes I miss the spirit of the sea and the warmth I look for when I am on a boat. A boat is not a status symbol; it is your house on the sea. It is the place where you relax, you share, you enjoy life."

When it comes to design, Fendi is inspired by everything: a monument, a facade, a flower. "I try to surround myself with beauty because beauty can generate only beauty," she says. "I was born in Rome, and I consider myself very lucky because this city represents everything. Creativity is for sure a natural gift, something that you have inside and you need to express and to share with others, but creativity without research and production is something that can damn yourself."

Fendi's style has always favoured clean lines, defined patterns and attention to detail. She enjoys mixing tradition with modernity, always adding an extravagant accent. Her concept for this interior is a tribute to the traditional romance of long ocean voyages with a contemporary twist. Inspired by old steamer trunks made from parchment and Bulgarian leather, Fendi uses space intelligently, packing everything in "as in a doll house". The boat will be both beautiful and functional, using a balanced colour palette and materials not usually found in the yachting world. "I tried to decorate this little sea-borne jewel in a special way and with a strong personality," smiles Fendi.

"I’ve always adored yachts of this size, they have an intrinsic sense of proportion, with an intimate and adventurous feel."

For Grande, the "fusion of experiences" while working with Fendi has been enlightening. "[She] is a person with enormous stylistic experience who has dedicated her life to the fashion world and the most sophisticated languages of style," he says. While collaborations between the worlds of fashion and yachts are not unusual, there are always new synergies to be made. "The yacht design world can learn from fashion that sometimes things can be round or squared," says Fendi. "Outside, yachts are very linear, dynamic, perfectly outlined. Inside, you have to put the soul; the vibrating and pulsing heart. It's like a fondant au chocolat, the outside is hard but the inside makes the difference and gives the outside a unique taste. Fashion can help to make the difference."

EXPLORER, entrepreneur and eternal WANDERER, David de Rothschild is on a MISSION to overhaul the FASHION industry through curious living and the knowledge that NATURE knows best

W

hile he may be part of a centuries-old banking legacy, 39-year-old British adventurer, activist and entrepreneur David de Rothschild shunned a life in suits and ties, deskbound in favour of changing the world. Over the last two decades, his passion for nature and his insatiable curiosity has enabled him to make a name for himself as a modern day eco-explorer. He has motorbiked through the Mongolian mountains, crossed Antarctica on skis and paddled down Brazil’s Xingu River to highlight the environmental affects of the Belo Monte dam. He has even sailed the 8,000 miles from San Fransisco to Sydney on a boat called Plastiki made from 12,500 plastic bottles to raise awareness of ocean pollution.

Through each of his expeditions, he has shone a spotlight on the most urgent international environmental issues and over ten-years ago he also founded the Sculpt the Future Foundation with the goal of promoting and supporting positive environmental change towards global sustainability. His latest adventure, a lifestyle and fashion brand called The Lost Explorer, may seem like a departure from his usual endeavours, but it is actually a conscious step on his eternal

eco-quest. In de Rothschild's own words, "the world needs another lifestyle brand like a hole in the head", but this is more than just another lifestyle brand. It is a platform for creativity, knowledgesharing and sustainable living, where the care and stories behind what it offers are as important as the gear itself. He describes a lost explorer as "a modern adventurer in life", someone who isn't running away from life, but running towards it.

And, as usual, de Rothschild isn't playing by the rules. Pieces are raffish and hard-wearing, designed to be worn any way that makes sense and collections are based around environments an explorer might find themselves in: deserts, mountains, oceans.

You will also find solve-all lotions and potions to throw into your traveller's backpack, as well as small batch Mezcal, a traditional spirit made from agave. This is about setting new standards in the fashion industry – one of the most polluting industries – so materials are sustainable and incorporate biomimicry. And interestingly, de Rothschild sees this as an ongoing, imperfect future-proofing 'experiment': their tag line is 'Established 2025'.

n 2013, in a move to turn the red carpet green, jewellery house Chopard embarked on what it has labelled The Journey: an ambitious, multi-year commitment to achieving sustainable luxury. The goal? To source responsibly, improve its environmental impact and improve the lives of those in the supply chain.

And this was no empty promise. A former protégé of Philippe Starck and passionate yachtsman, Rolland has been with the company since 2002, leading yacht projects that have become celebrated classics on the water.

Over the years, Liaigre’s team have worked on six superyacht projects, each one a triumph of style and restraint.

While a completely unique approach to every creation is a philosophical foundation of the studio, Liaigre’s language is evident in each project.

Light and space are materials to be used in the same way as beautiful woods, marbles and leather. Colour palettes are straightforward and nothing is superfluous; luxury comes from subtlety not excess. And crucially, for Rolland, form should always follow function.

Rolland calls it the “paradox of the boat” – the seeming contradiction between the harsh elements of life at sea with the fluidity

of the exterior and interior lines. In 2013, Liaigre completed the interior for the 60m ketch S/Y Seahawk. Warm, comfortable but pared-back and cool, Seahawk incorporated various clever design solutions to preserve both space – always at a premium on board – and intimacy. A window, for example, separates the living spaces from the social areas, partitioning off certain rooms without creating cabins.

On board 67m S/Y Vertigo, high performance specs demanded excellent ergonomics for comfort and safety. All the furniture is fixed and storage spaces are built in, but Liaigre has still created a “distinguished work of art”, using luxurious but understated materials: darkened waxed oak, white leather, mahogany and steel.

Functionality and beauty combine in their motoryacht projects too. 2016’s M/Y Cloudbreak, a 73m explorer yacht designed to take her adventurous owner to the far corners of the globe, may have an ice belt and be ready for all conditions, but she is also sumptuously comfortable. Knowing that the yacht would frequent areas with extreme weather, Liaigre emulated the cosy warmth of a mountain cabin without being twee; spaces are welcoming and bright with light and darker woods and lacquers seamlessly interwoven. ospitality is a fine art. It is an ever-evolving exercise in intuition, patience and tenacity. A complex balance of flexibility, discretion and charm. No one knows this better than Hanspeter Vochezer, founder of Swiss Butlers and president of the Swiss Butler Association, who for over twenty years has served in some of the best hotels and worked for the most elite families in the world.

“The greatest thing you can do on the planet is to serve people on the highest possible level,” he says. “Whether you are a butler on a private estate or a crew member on a superyacht, excellent service is about going the extra mile, going beyond the expected to make your clients happy.”

The role of a butler may seem like something from a bygone era but for Vochezer, the need for personal service at this level has seen a resurgence. The position of personal staff at the heart of top families changed when post-war society downsized, becoming conscious of conspicuous consumption, and decades of technological advances made it easier for people to do things themselves. But we have now come full circle. “Wealthy people work so hard today,” he says. “Every minute of their time is precious so they want someone who can help them get things done and transform their free time.”

As the world has evolved, so too have the clients. But, having worked in the most luxurious hotels, from Portugal to Thailand, Gstaad to Palm Springs, Vochezer doesn’t feel like everyone kept up. “Guests in five-star hotels don’t want to be told when to have breakfast or when the kitchen closes anymore,” he observes. “Expectations have changed. Clients’

schedules are their own and you need to be flexible, but most luxury hotels are not.”

Good service has no boundaries in true luxury, he says, and this is the beauty of superyachts. Here, where exclusivity is guaranteed, you have an entire crew dedicated to delivering exactly what you want, when you want and how you want. With this in mind, Vochezer and Ocean Management, the technical services division of Ocean Independence, have joined forces to create a bespoke on board training programme for superyacht crew to furnish them with the skills, etiquette, protocol, and specialist butler tips to go the distance.

“The key to impeccable service is never assuming, never judging and always staying three steps ahead,” he says. “It is about understanding your guests and adapting to their needs. If, as a crew, you communicate, work as a team and are always positive and ready to go the extra mile, your guests’ experience will be incomparable. There is no greater reward than this.”

Going the extra mile doesn’t need to be complicated. It is most often about the smallest of details; creating ‘magic moments’, as Vochezer says. It is leaving a different luxury Swiss chocolate on the table next to the bed every night. It is chilling three bottles of champagne when they’ve asked you to chill one, just in case friends come over for a drink. It is constantly listening and anticipating.

But it is one that is the transformative force behind Dom Pérignon’s wines. The flavour, aroma and experience of each vintage comes to reflect the distinct conditions that year, making each bottle oneof-a-kind, while still embracing the unique essence of what makes Dom Pérignon such a sought-after label.

Dom Pérignon has also revolutionised its ageing process. Champagne undergoes a remarkable evolution of depth and aroma as it is left to mature. Young Dom Pérignon is perfectly balanced and weighted, with notes of smooth, creamy fruit. As it ages, it takes on heavenly toasty aromas and a subtlety that is unique to its marque. To allow its champagnes to evolve and tell their unique stories, for each vintage, Dom Pérignon creates three late-releases called Plénitudes. the second expression of the house’s millennium vintage. After sixteen years of slow ageing, P2 2000 has developed into a more full-bodied, more coherent and more harmonious Champagne. The bouquet is ripe, lively and generous, with warm aromas of hay and brioche mingling with bergamot orange and russet stone fruit. The overall effect exudes smoky grey accents. On the palate, it is at once spirited and tactile, its nuanced flavours releasing gradually. The length is exquisitely bitter and comes with sap, a mingling of liquorice and toasted malt.

Much of the depth, flavour and success of this vintage comes from the particular climate in 2000. Cold and rainy periods, mixed with warm and stormy weather; summer was uncertain and often gloomy. Thankfully the weather brightened up towards the end of August and sunny days continued until the end of the harvest.
