t the age of three, Mark Healey was surfing 8ft-high waves on the north shore of Oahu in his native Hawaii. A decade later, a photograph of him at 14, taming a 40-footer at notorious Waimea Bay, thrust the teenager into the limelight, earning him his first surf sponsorship. Last May, the now world-famous waterman defied logistics and sense to surf what was described as the biggest paddle-in wave ever seen at Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Since the inaugural America’s Cup took place off England’s south coast in 1951, innovation in boat design has transformed the sport of sailing. The catamarans built for racing now soar through the sea with fixed, rigid wings instead of sails, and have as much in common with airplanes as they do sailboats.
Jimmy Spithill, Oracle Team USA skipper and two-time winner of the Cup, is only too aware of the close crossover between sailing and flying. He confirms that gaining his pilot’s licence was the most effective way to understand the aerodynamic principles that come into play during a race.
‘Sailing one of these AC45 catamarans is very similar to flying – you’ve got the forward wings and back elevators,’ Spithill explains.
‘But in terms of control, it’s more like flying a helicopter, in that you have three things going on at once, so you’re always making adjustments. You’re trying to balance and manage it and anticipate.’
The inspiration to launch Bremont in 2002 stemmed from their father’s detailed knowledge of aviation, yacht construction and clock manufacture.
Fourteen years on and Bremont has been appointed Official Timing Partner for the 35th America’s Cup and defending champions, Oracle Team USA. Combining aviation expertise with a clear understanding of how to assist sailors has definitely paid off.
