Executive director’s MESSAGE by Alka Sharma On behalf of the staff and all the volunteers, I would like to welcome you to the 28th Annual Conference of Folk Music Ontario! The Westin Bristol Place will be the new home for the FMO Conference for 2014 and 2015. We look forward to working with the staff of the Westin Bristol Place for the next two years.

Every year we ask you, our delegates and members, how you enjoyed (or did not enjoy) the conference, whether it was rewarding and what changes you may want to see at the following year’s conference. Based on the results of these surveys, we decided to change a few things this year: 1. Official showcases will start on Thursday. FMO will present six showcases in one room on Thursday evening. Friday and Saturday will still each have twelve official showcases – six in each of two rooms, with staggered starting times.

2. Sponsored showcase slots were available for booking on Thursday night (after the official showcases), Friday lunchtime and Saturday lunchtime. Private showcases will still be held only on Friday and Saturday night. There won’t be any overlap between sponsored and private showcases, so they will not be competing for each other’s audiences.

3. The conference will no longer include a gala dinner.

Instead, Folk Music Ontario

will provide complimentary breakfast food on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings, and will provide complimentary coffee and tea throughout the conference.

4. The awards that were presented at the gala dinner in the past will now be presented at an Awards Brunch on Sunday morning, followed by the Estelle Klein Award interview. A “Sunday only” daily conference registration rate was added to the daily rates already available for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We hope that you enjoy and appreciate the changes that we have made to the conference this year. Please do let us know what you think!

Folk Music Ontario would not be able to bring you a conference if it were not for the dedication of the Board of Directors. The Board has worked tirelessly on a voluntary basis serving on committees, helping with the Silent Auction and basically getting their hands “dirty” to make sure the organization thrives. The Board deserves a huge thank you; please say hi to them when you see them walking around during the conference. They would appreciate high fives too!

FMO’s Conference Working Group and Copperworks Consulting Inc. have put a great deal of effort into bringing you a fun-filled conference, chockfull of great panels and workshops. Jennifer Ellis, FMO’s

Office Manager, has been great as ever managing all of your questions, enquiries and concerns. Thrity Canteenwala, our outgoing Office Administrator, worked extremely diligently on many aspects of conference planning. I’d also like to thank all of our hard-working volunteers! Our new Volunteer Coordinator, Annie Orvis, will be instrumental in guiding you over the days of the conference. Thrity and Annie both came to FMO through Ontario’s Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program.

This year, Jill Zmud is organizing the Art Beat Program and Treasa Levasseur is coordinating the Youth Program.

We are really excited that the community outreach program has thrived and that the Youth Program keeps getting so many young people involved with Folk Music Ontario. Jill and Treasa have both done a fabulous job!

Finally, thank you delegates and members who are attending this year’s conference. We welcome you and hope that you find the conference rewarding and beneficial. Enjoy the music!

MESSAGE DE LA DIRECTRICE EXECUTIVE par Alka Sharma Au nom du personnel et de tous les bénévoles, je tiens à vous souhaiter la bienvenue à la 28e Conférence annuelle de Musique Folk de l’Ontario!

Le Westin Bristol Place sera le nouveau domicile de la conférence FMO pour 2014 et 2015, nous avons hâte de travailler avec le personnel du Westin Bristol Place, durant les deux prochaines années.

Chaque année, nous vous demandons, nos délégués et membres, combien vous avez aimé (ou n’avez pas aimé) la conférence, si elle a été enrichissante, et quels changements vous aimeriez voir, lors de la conférence de l’année suivante. Sur la base des résultats de ces sondages, cette année, nous avons décidé de faire quelques changements :

1. Les vitrines officielles débuteront jeudi. FMO offrira six vitrines qui auront lieu dans une salle, le jeudi soir.

Il y aura aussi douze vitrines officielles vendredi, et également samedi - six dans chacune des deux salles, qui débuteront à des heures échelonnées.

3. La conférence ne va plus comprendre un dîner de gala. À sa place, Musique Folk de l’Ontario offrira gratuitement de la nourriture pour le petit déjeuner du vendredi, du samedi, et du dimanche matin, et du café et du thé gratuit durant toute la conférence.

2. Des plages horaires pouvaient être réservées pour des vitrines commanditées, le jeudi soir (après les vitrines officielles), le vendredi et le samedi midi. Les vitrines privées auront, à nouveau lieu, seulement le vendredi et le samedi soir. Il n’y aura pas de chevauchement entre les vitrines commanditées et les vitrines privées, elles ne se feront donc pas concurrence quant à chacun de leur public.

4. La présentation des prix qui, dans le passé, avait lieu au dîner de gala, se fera, maintenant, à un Brunch de remise de prix, le dimanche matin, et sera suivie de l’interview du Prix Estelle Klein. Un tarif journalier d’inscription à la conférence « dimanche seulement » a été ajouté aux tarifs journaliers qui sont déjà en vente pour le jeudi, le vendredi et le samedi.

Nous espérons que les changements que nous avons apportés à la conférence de cette année seront à votre goût et que vous en serez ravis. Nous vous prions de nous donner votre avis!

Musique Folk de l’Ontario ne serait pas en mesure de vous offrir une conférence si ce n’était pas pour le dévouement du conseil d’administration. Nous sommes vraiment ravis que le programme de sensibilisation communautaire ait prospéré et que le par l’intermédiaire du programme de la jeunesse, tant de jeunes s’impliquent dans Musique Folk de l’Ontario. Jill et Treasa ont toutes deux fait un excellent travail !

The president’s message by Alex Sinclair

Welcome to the 28th Conference of Folk Music Ontario/Musique Folk de l’Ontario.

This is the first of two years here at the Westin Bristol Place Hotel; we hope that it proves to be an excellent venue for our conference.

I extend a heartfelt thanks to our Executive Director, Alka Sharma. She, and our overworked staff, along with Copperworks Consulting Inc., and our Conference Working Group, have all been working hard to bring you yet one more great conference. Last year, we heard a lot of comments about how relaxed the conference felt. We think that has a lot to do with Alka’s ability to make stress seem like a day at the beach. She has been wonderful to work with, and we hope that this conference reflects a similar sort of calm excitement.

Now it’s up to you to make the most of the experience, and to help others get the most out of their experience.

Talk to people, share stories and information and advice and contacts. Talk to us (we’re people too), and help us get

better at delivering the services that you need to make the folk biz a better place to be.

Play lots of music, listen to lots of music. Listen. Listen. Listen. It’s the best way to learn.

And if you bump into any of your board of directors, or your staff, stop and say hello.

We need to know you as more than just names in a database.

And while you’re busying yourself with your career plan, or your festival’s future, or your house concert series, please bear in mind a couple of very important matters for the FMO as an organization and for its members: • Don’t forget to vote before 3:00pm Saturday to elect four directors to the FMO Board for a threeyear term, choosing from among the seven candidates who have been nominated.

• Be sure to attend the Annual General Meeting on Saturday morning at 9:00am.

We want you to hear about last year, our plans for next year, and we want to hear your comments and ideas.

At the Awards Brunch on

Sunday, we will honour this year's recipient of the Estelle Klein Award, Harvey Glatt.

I bought some of my first records at Harvey's Treble Clef store in Ottawa in the 60s. I bought concert tickets at the Bass Clef. I listened to CHEZFM. And I learned over the years of Harvey's quiet support of dozens of music projects. Harvey has been a primal force in Canadian music for decades, and he still shows up at concerts, industry events and showcases. I think it's because he really likes music.

We’ll also be celebrating the winners of this year’s Songs From the Heart awards and the Colleen Peterson Award. Watch for opportunities to catch these performers in showcases and elsewhere.

Hire them.

And congratulations to this year’s winners of the President’s Choice award. Richard Flohil and Lynn Miles were awarded lifetime memberships in FMO for their outstanding work, and because I think they’re really cool.

Have a great conference. And thank a volunteer!

THE ART OF A MAN CALLED WRYCRAFT Michael Wrycraft has become a beloved and respected member of Canada’s musical community. He’s a concert presenter, a popular emcee, and most recently host of the weekly online radio show “From Cover To Cover”. But more of us know Michael through his primary occupation - album cover art and poster designs.

Over the last 20 years Michael has designed more than 500 album covers alone. His award-winning work is always brilliantly varied and creative and is sought after by artists and producers far beyond Canada’s borders.

Even though Michael may be loathe to shout of his accomplishments (hah!), we at Borealis decided it was time to share our own appreciation of his talents with the delegates to Folk Music Ontario’s conference. We asked him to select 40 of his favourite projects for us to mount in this exhibition, and to tell us something about his choices.

MESSAGE DU PRÉSIDENT par Alex Sinclair Bienvenue à la 28e Conférence de Musique Folk de l’Ontario. Nous voici ici pour notre première des deux années à l’Hôtel Westin Bristol Place; nous espérons que notre conférence s’y déroulera magnifiquement bien.

Je présente mes plus grands remerciements à notre directrice executive, Alka Sharma. Mlle. Sharma et notre personnel qui travaille sans relâche, Copperworks Consulting Inc., et notre groupe de travail de la conférence ont tous travaillé très fort afin de vous offrir, encore une fois, une extraordinaire conférence.

L’année dernière, nous avons eu beaucoup de commentaires sur l’atmosphère très détendue de la conférence. Nous savons qu’un des facteurs principaux est qu’Alka est capable de transformer le stress en une journée à la plage. C’était un immense plaisir de travailler avec elle, et nous espérons que cette conférence reflète une même sorte d’excitation calme.

Maintenant c’est à vous de profiter le plus que possible de l’expérience, et d’aider les autres à tirer le meilleur parti de leur expérience. Parlez aux gens, partagez des histoires, des informations, des conseils et des contacts. Venez nous parler (nous sommes des gens aussi), et aidez-nous à mieux fournir les services dont vous

avez besoin pour rendre le monde de la Musique folk, encore plus attrayant. Jouez beaucoup de musique, écoutez beaucoup de musique. Écoutez. Écoutez. Écoutez. C’est le meilleur moyen d’apprendre.

Et si vous croisez un membre de votre conseil d’administration, ou de votre personnel, arrêtez-vous et dites bonjour. Nous avons besoin de vous connaître mieux que seulement des noms dans une base de données.

Et pendant que vous êtes affairé à votre plan de carrière, à l’avenir de votre festival, ou à votre série de concerts à domicile, nous vous prions de garder à l’esprit quelques questions très importantes pour la FMO en tant qu’organisation, et pour ses membres : • N’oubliez pas de voter avant 15 h, samedi, pour élire quatre administrateurs au Conseil FMO pour un mandat de trois ans, en choisissant parmi les sept candidats qui ont été nommés.

• Assurez-vous d’assister à l’assemblée générale annuelle, samedi matin à 9 h. Nous voulons que vous entendiez ce que nous voulons exprimer concernant l’année dernière, nos plans pour l’année prochaine, et nous voulons entendre vos commentaires et vos idées.

Au Brunch de remise de Prix de dimanche, nous allons honorer le récipiendaire du Prix Estelle Klein, de cette année, Harvey Glatt. J’ai acheté certains de mes premiers disques au magasin Treble Clef, de Harvey, à Ottawa, dans les années 60. J’ai acheté des billets de concert à Bass Clef. J’ai écouté CHEZ-FM. Et au fil des années, j’ai réalisé, combien Harvey procurait de soutien, de manière très discrète, à des douzaines de projets musicaux. Harvey est une force primordiale de la musique canadienne, depuis des décennies, et il assiste encore aux concerts, aux événements de l’industrie et aux présentations. Je crois que c’est parce qu’il aime vraiment la musique.

Nous allons également célébrer les gagnants du Prix Chansons du fond du coeur et du Prix Colleen Peterson. Saisissez les occasions de voir ces artistes lors à des présentations et ailleurs. Embauchez-les.

Nous félicitons aussi les gagnants du Prix du Choix du Président de cette année.

Richard Flohil et Lynn Miles ont reçu l’adhésion à vie à FMO pour leur travail exceptionnel, et parce que je pense qu’ils sont vraiment cool.

Je vous souhaite une excellente conférence. Et vous prie de remercier un bénévole!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER CHARLIE ANGUS by Alex Sinclair

My first memory of Charlie Angus isn’t of him at all, really. It’s of walking across the grounds of some folk festival a long time ago and hearing some wonderfully raucous band belting out a song about crossing the causeway to Ontario. I had no idea what causeway that might be, but it conjured up a powerful image of people coming to Ontario chasing some kind of dream, and it was a song that I wished I had written.

Charlie has written a lot of those kinds of songs – songs filled with energy and sorrow and love – and there are a lot of us who carry The Grievous Angels in our hearts as a band that pushed a whole northern Ontario perspective into our lives. Charlie still writes and performs – I saw him and his band at the Northern Lights Festival Boreal in 2013 – but he does a whole lot more as well.

Charlie started up a magazine, The HighGrader, that continues his chronicling of Northern Ontario life and culture. He’s co-authored a bunch of books on the north, including one on the fight against the Adams mine dump – a fight that he was very involved with.

And for the past ten years he has been the NDP MP for Timmins-James Bay. As MP, he has spoken passionately about the plight of aboriginal communities, and especially the problems faced by aboriginal youth. He has led the fight in the House for net neutrality, and carried the ball for the NDP on copyright issues.

As an MP, he is known in his riding as hard-working, responsive, approachable, and ‘very present’. I wish I could say the same about all MPs. I don’t know what Charlie plans to speak about; I’d be happy if he stood up and sang songs. But I hope that he speaks about the role of music, especially folk music, in Canadian life. I hope that he speaks to the interplay of power and politics and performance. I want to hear where a working musician fits in the dynamic of our government, and what the rest of us can do to carry our values back to the forefront of the Canadian consciousness.

cal fighter all of his adult life.

He has also been an engaged songwriter. I want to hear how he makes that work.

Charlie Angus will be delivering FMO’s seventh annual keynote address at the 2014 conference, during the SOCAN reception on Friday, October 17 at 6:00pm.

Board of Directors Alex Sinclair (President)

Adam Brown

Alex is a long-time musician and songwriter with deep roots on the Ontario folk scene, both as a solo artist and with the folk group Tamarack. Alex also works as an administrator/bookkeeper for the likes of Borealis Records, and sits on the board of the ArtsCan Circle.

Adam Oliver Brown grew up in the 70s Folk scene of festivals, concerts, mummering and Morris dancing. He has since cofounded the Maple Morris youth dance troupe and performs regularly with them and Thames Valley International. He was a past director of the Ottawa Folk Festival and artsScene OttawaGatineau. Currently Dr. Brown is also a professor of Biology at the University of Ottawa where he helps sharpen the minds and wits of future ecologists and environmental scientists.

Katharine Partridge (Vice President)

Jane Harbury

Katharine is FMO’s vice president, serving in her second term.

She is a founder of Shelter Valley Folk Festival and current vicechair. In her other life, she is a communications and stakeholder engagement specialist advising international clients on sustainability issues. She has worked as a magazine journalist and prior to that as a stage manager for Canadian theatres.

Jane began her career as manager of the renowned Riverboat in Yorkville. She founded Jane Harbury Publicity (JHP) in 1988.

Clients have included the Juno Awards, NXNE, Ontario Place Forum, BMG Music, The Chieftains, Borealis Records and Bluebird North, among others. Client roster includes Hugh’s Room and singer/songwriters, including Amy Campbell, Steven Taetz and Andria Simone.

Jan Cody (Treasurer) Jan’s focus has been in the arts and music industries, developing programming, marketing and outreach programs for clients and partner groups. As ED of the CCMA for a decade, her role included producing a national awards program and TV broadcast, overseeing the Hall of Fame process, and financial management of the organization. Jan is currently the ED of Shelter Valley Folk Festival.

Dan Greenwood (Secretary)

Dan Greenwood, inspired by his passion for music, worked on behalf of songwriters and publishers for over twenty-five years in various roles at SOCAN, Canada’s performing rights organization.

As SOCAN’s Vice-President of Corporate Planning and Business Change, he was responsible for strategic and corporate planning and operational change (re-engineering).

Scott Merrifield (Past President)

Brad McEwen is the founder and AD of the Mill Race Folk Society Music. He is a musician who has performed throughout Ontario and the UK. He has served on many Cambridge city council-appointed advisory committees and cofounded the Grand River Folk Community. He has served for over two years on the FMO Board and advocates strongly on behalf of both festivals and traditional music. Brad has received arts and culture awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

A founder and past Artistic Director of Northern Lights Festival Boréal, Scott was also involved in OCFF in its early days and gave workshops at early conferences. Since 1992, he has been presenting approximately 8 house concerts per year in Sudbury.

In 2008, Scott retired from his job as Director of Policy & Planning for FedNor, where he delivered community-based social and economic development programs throughout Northern Ontario, including extensive work with Aboriginal communities.

Rachel Barreca (Member-at-Large) Rachel is a community builder and educator with a passion for transformative learning through the arts. With twenty-plus years of experience in the world of music as a performer, producer, promoter, academic, volunteer, broadcaster, and administrator, she brings a broad skill-set, a fresh perspective, and her infectious laughter to FMO.

Amie Therrien Amie is the owner of Balsam Pier Music and is currently working with a number of independent artists to help them realize their goals within the music industry. She has taken on tour booking, career planning, grant writing, marketing & publicity, among all sorts of other things. Her involvement in organizations outside of the music world gives her a unique perspective and new ideas to bring the FMO table.

Shawna Caspi (Member-at-Large) Shawna Caspi is a touring singer-songwriter based in Toronto who is working on her third CD, slated for release in 2014. She currently manages social media for Borealis Records and has worked with the Ontario Arts Council, Roots Music Canada, Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, Bravo!FACT, and CARAS.

Jerry Switzer (Member-at-Large) Jerry is the chair of Tottenham Bluegrass Festival (1991 to present) and legal counsel for several arts organizations, clubs, charities, foundations and associations. In addition, Jerry is a Director and Officer of community organizations relating to business and cultural event. Jerry is involved in the musical community at all levels, and is a songwriter and performer in musical groups and bluegrass bands.

ESTELLE KLEIN AWARD RECIPIENT HARVEY GLATT

Harvey Glatt has been tirelessly dedicated to promoting the arts, particularly the musical arts, in Canada for over six decades.

Harvey Glatt’s commitment to Canadian arts and culture did not stop with his “retirement” from the world of broadcasting in 1999. He has worked steadily on the board of FACTOR (the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Records) and as Director of Canadian Music Development for Rogers Media.

The word “tireless” is no exaggeration. Harvey attends literally, not virtually, literally every CD launch, every new play, and every concert that takes place in Ottawa regardless of the venue and regardless of the time of day.

Harvey then took over the reins of True North Records from his old friend, Bernie Finkelstein. In this new capacity he has been responsible for the production of two tribute albums: one for Gordon Lightfoot and one for William Hawkins. These albums feature an impressively wide array of Canadian musicians. He also coaxed the legendary Canadian saxophonist, Hugh O’Connor, into his very first recording and organized a CD launch at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

Harvey was hooked on music from a very early age. His formative years as a record store owner, then concert promoter paved the way to his true calling: exposing the public to new music and new artists through the medium of radio.

In his early days as a record store owner, Harvey provided employment to a great number of musicians and artists who were trying to make ends meet while perfecting their crafts. Among those were the poet and songwriter, William Hawkins, the singer/songwriter David Wiffen, and the much-loved eccentric disc jockey, Brian Murphy.

In 2008, Harvey and his wife Louise donated money to the National Arts Centre to enable concertgoers with hearing problems to be able to hear music in Southam Hall.

Harvey has also given an endowment to the Community Foundation of Ottawa, which is the basis for the One Fret Less Award at the Ottawa Folk Festival; he has established The Harvey and Louise Glatt Broadcast Radio Bursary at Algonquin College; he and Louise have made very generous contributions to the National Gallery of Canada Foundation; and he has established The Harvey Glatt Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre at the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama.

As well as promoting concerts and plays in the National Capital Region, Harvey also became part owner of Café Le Hibou, the legendary coffeehouse that nurtured the careers of young folksingers such as Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn and hundreds of others.

With the establishment of the Ottawa radio Station, CHEZ FM, in 1977, Harvey realized a long-standing dream and became a trailblazer in the world of FM radio. The only independent radio station in Ottawa at the time, CHEZ’s eclectic mix of music and spoken word programming quickly made it the most successful and most listened to radio station in the nation’s capital.

Thanks to Harvey’s vision, through the airwaves, Canadian musicians were given an exposure previously unheard of in Canadian private media.

These are just a few of a great many efforts Harvey Glatt has made to the music and theatrical worlds. But the most amazing thing about the man is his unflagging enthusiasm for the arts. On any given night in Ottawa, be it at the Elmdale Tavern for the Spirit of Rasputin’s concer ts or the National Ar ts Centre for Pinchas Zukerman’s latest classical endeavour, in the audience – guaranteed – you will see this 80-year-old teenager, enjoying the music.

Reflections From The Board, As A Non-performing Folkie

As the end of my 3-year term as a Director of the Board approaches, I can’t help but reflect on my experience, in part out of nostalgia for the end of an enjoyable era and in part to evaluate the contributions that one can make in the governance and direction of a community-based organization. This is a time of important turnover and renewal and I look forward to seeing what the new Directors will bring to the table, as they join the stellar group of those staying on.

I was born and raised in the thick of Canadian folk culture and spent most of my youth at concerts and festivals as one of the many kin of the Friends of Fiddler’s Green.

I have since been active in my own way as an amateur musical performer and a little bit more seriously as a dancer of the Morris. However, I

recently dropped out and became a bit of an outsider to the folk festival scene by focusing more on my own career as an environmental scientist and Professor of ecology and evolution at the University of Ottawa. Resigning myself to not having a folk art career of my own may have been a driving force for me to get involved in an organizational manner in the Ottawa Folk Festival and then in the OCFF (now Folk Music Ontario): so that I can still maintain a sense of belonging, attachment and contribution to the folk scene that has always meant so much to me.

It was in fact this latter re-branding to Folk Music Ontario that was the main topic of discussion upon my election to the Board and was the subject of much deliberation on my part at the time. One of my original motivations in joining

the board of the OCFF at the time was to try to broaden the definition of our community from mostly engaging and representing festivals, promoters and musicians, to including a larger array of artists from our greater folk community, stemming from my own experiences in folk dance and mummers plays. As it happened, I had come to the table a little late in that conversation and we subsequently all moved forward in unison to becoming a more music-based and focused folk organization, as the new name will attest.

The work from behind the scenes on the board may not necessarily be seen as thrilling but it is an important and an engaging job, one which goes on all year round. It is always a pleasure to see how all of the conversations, ideas and action items from all of

our meetings come to fruition at the conference, which is really what we are working towards for most of the year.

This isn’t to say that all we do on the board is to prepare for the conference either, as there are many needs of such an organization for the directors and staff to attend to: governance, finances and just maintaining all of the gears in a finely-tuned manner in order to ensure that the overall machine continues to tick like clockwork.

An equally important role of FMO is to provide resources, support and opportunities to our membership, whom we are mandated to serve. Also, although we may still have work to do once the conference arrives, it is always an absolute joy to revel in the festivities, meetings and parties at the an-

nual event and just take it all in over the weekend. Among some of the more pleasurable aspects for me are the heartfelt recognitions of the pioneers and luminaries in our midst with the Estelle Klein Award, the nod to the fine art of songwriting with the Colleen Peterson and Songs from the Heart prizes and the fostering of the next generation of folkies through the Taylor Mitchell bursary and the youth mentorship program. To me, these speak loudly that it has always been and always will be you that make us what we are.

The folk festival and concert scene has been such an important part of my life and is one that I will always strive to be a part of, despite not being much of a folk artist anymore these days. Being

part of the directorship of Folk Music Ontario over the past few years has allowed me to feel very much a part of our great community and to have made many new friends on the board and staff, as well as with you all at our annual conference. So as I relinquish my seat at the board table and say farewell for now, I know that it is by no means an adieu, for my experience has been one that will last with me forever and I look forward to seeing all of you, my new friends and old alike at one of our many member festivals, concerts or parties. Thank you all for welcoming me into your community so warmly and I will truly miss working to make the FMO such a wonderful organization with you all. Cheers!

colleen peterson songwriting award an Ontario government agency un organisme du gouvernement de l’Ontario

The Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award was established to help support and promote the work of Ontario-resident emerging singer/songwriters in the genres of roots, traditional, folk and country music. The annual recipient is chosen by an Ontario Arts Council (OAC) selection panel from nominations put forward by Folk Music Ontario’s Songs From the Heart competition jury.

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) is pleased to announce Ken Yates as the recipient of the 2014 Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award for his song “The One That Got Away”. Congratulations, Ken!

Ken Yates

Born and raised in London, Ontario, Ken Yates moved to Boston to study songwriting at Berklee College of Music. It was there that he released his first CD, “The Backseat EP,” and received the opportunity to play a song for one of his biggest influences, John Mayer. Mayer took an interest in Ken’s music, posting a full page blog about Yates’ ability as a writer. Yates has toured with many notable names including veteran singer/songwriter and mentor, Livingston Taylor, Sister Hazel, Peter Katz, and Liz Longley and has songs in heavy rotation on Sirius XM’s The Coffee House, where he was nominated for The Coffee House Songwriter Discovery of the Year. Ken’s debut full length album “twenty-three” is available now with Mishara Music.

THE FMO TAYLOR MITCHELL BURSARY

In 2010, in memory of her daughter, Canadian songwriter Taylor Mitchell, Emily Mitchell established The OCFF Taylor Mitchell Bursary for participants in the Youth Performer program.

Initially funded for five years (2010-2014 inclusive), the bursary has recently received additional funding, allowing it to be awarded through the 2016 conference.

One young performer is chosen to receive up to $500 towards costs associated with attending the conference and participating in the performer stream of the Folk Music Ontario youth program. All candidates chosen by jury to participate in the program are eligible for the bursary. The recipient is determined according to need by a group of musical mentors who knew and loved Taylor. The award was renamed the Folk Music Ontario Tay-

lor Mitchell Bursary in 2013.

This year’s recipient of the FMO Taylor Mitchell Bursary is Benjamin Rogers from Thunder Bay. Catch Benjamin and the other youth performers in the Ticketpro Youth Showcase on Saturday, October 18, 2:005:00pm in the Mayfair room of the Westin Bristol Place.

Youth Program participants and alumni will also be performing in their own private showcase room on Saturday, October 18 and 8 in Room 352.

by Jorge Miguel I was lucky enough to be able to participate in Art Beat 2013 as a part of the FMO conference in Mississauga.

Art Beat is an outreach program that connects performers with schools, residences and health care facilities.

I took my solo Flamenco guitar to St. Marcellinus Secondary School in Mississauga for a mini show and discussion with music students about my life in music. I had no idea

what to expect as what I do is very specialized. The response was fantastic, and the students and faculty were lovely, attentive and appreciative. I loved being able to share my art-form, my culture and lifestyle with talented kids that may choose to pursue music further. Hopefully, I was able to communicate the multiple disciplines involved in being a professional musician as well as the rewards of a life in art.

I enjoyed every second of my Art Beat performance. It was effortless, the questions just kept coming and the time passed quickly. I especially enjoyed having a very talented young female percussionist sit in on some very complex Flamenco songs. I got a lot from the experience and would do it again in a minute.

EXPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AND THE SUCCESSION PLAN

There are three key Export Development Program initiatives that help connect export delegates, mentors and artists:

As part of its mandate to foster and develop the folk music industry in Ontario, Folk Music Ontario has partnered with Folk Music Canada and CAPACOA to present these two key programs at the 2014 conference.

• Meet & Greet on Thursday: this event helps delegates and artists get to know each other early in the event.

What is an Export Development Program? Basically, it means that we invite key buyers and industry people (Export Delegates) to attend Folk Music Ontario. The goal is to get the right Export Delegate connected to artists attending the conference, particularly performers who are considered export-ready. We also hope that the Export Development delegates will network with Ontario festivals and other members of the Ontario folk community, but ultimately, we want the Export Delegates to connect with artists performing at the conference.

• One-on-one business meetings: we matchmake more than 300 meetings over two days, ensuring that artists are meeting with delegates who ‘fit’ their music and career goals.

• CD Library: Export delegates browse a library of CDs so they can easily access the music of the artists taking part in the Export Development Program.

In addition to these invite-only activities, our 27 export delegates also participate in panels, and take in showcase performances throughout the weekend.

The Succession Plan, presented by CAPACOA, is intricately linked to the Export Development Program as it strives to connect emergent arts administrators (festival directors, artist managers etc) with mentors in their field, with the goal of advancing professional development, personal growth and peer network resources. In general, participants in The Succession Plan (both mentors and mentees) also take part in The Export Development Program.

Shawna Caspi is a touring singer-songwriter based in Toronto who is working on her third CD, slated for release in 2014. She currently manages social media for Borealis Records and has worked with the Ontario Arts Council, Roots Music Canada, Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, Bravo!FACT, and CARAS.

Jan Cody Jan’s focus has been in the arts and music industries, developing programming, marketing and outreach programs for clients and partner groups. As ED of the CCMA for a decade, her role included producing a national awards program and TV broadcast, overseeing the Hall of Fame process, and financial management of the organization.

Jan is currently the ED of Shelter Valley Folk Festival.

Derek Andrews

Derek Andrews is as arts consultant and concert producer. He is a guest curator for the Luminato Festival and his Global Café artist roster uses the Canada Council’s Career Development program to retain his management services. Derek is a passion advocate for creative approaches in music, especially when used as a tool for breaking down cultural barriers.

Nicole Colbeck Nicole, artist manager (little acorn music management), house concert presenter in Ottawa (Westboro House Concerts), and passionate supporter of musicians, also worked as Assistant to the Executive Director at OCFF/ FMO. In the late nineties, she helped to establish Nutshell Music Inc., one of Ottawa’s premiere festival production companies.

Jason Arkley

Jason has worked closely with many organizations over his15 year career, including the CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival, CBC Radio and the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

In his heart he is passionate about grassroots events and the performers, volunteers and community folks that make them happen.

Michelle Conceison Rose Cousins’ manager Michelle Conceison runs Boston-based marketing and management company Market Monkeys. Prior to music, Conceison led teams at advertising agencies in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, working with major brands including AT&T, Bank of America, and General Motors. Conceison is a professor at Northeastern University and Simmons School of Management, and is the Vice President of the Board of Folk Alliance International.

Robert Baird is President of BAM! Baird Artists Management Consulting. He writes a regular column, “Crossing Borders”, in International Musician: The Official Journal of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada. Dave Cool

David Barnard

Dave Cool (yes, that’s his real name) is the Director of Artist Relations for Bandzoogle, a website and marketing platform for musicians. Through blogging, social media, and traveling to conferences, he keeps an open dialogue with the indie artist community about the challenges they face, and what strategies they can use to advance their careers.

David is a cultural consultant with the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Arts Presentation Fund. He has been deeply involved in community development and outreach, panel presentations, radio broadcasting, event planning and production, parenting, bicycling, camping and playing baseball. He deeply loves music.

Caroline Brooks

Caroline Brooks grew up in guitar cases and singing harmony in her parents’ family band. She is a member of Canadian Juno-Award winning trio Good Lovelies. Over the last two years, Caroline has become a bonafide “Mom on the Road”, sharing hundreds of performances with her daughter Annabelle.

Corbett’s name is known and respected across Canada as a songwriter, an award-winning utility man, sound mixer, and a touring machine. He is a *rock star* at his mom’s house.

Current president of the Mariposa Folk Foundation, Pam has also been the festival organizing chair for the last five years. Pam and her team have developed comprehensive risk management plans for the festival, which provide a simple, user-friendly written guide explaining how MFF will ensure the safety of the public during the event, and outline the roles and responsibilities of the volunteer organizers.

Christa Couture has toured, recorded and made ends meet in music for 10 years. Her last album, The Living Record, garnered “Best of 2012” picks by CBC Music and The Georgia Straight, 2014 saw the hugely successful crowdfunding “Kneeraiser” campaign, and she’s the managing editor of RPM.fm’s “Indigenous Music Culture.”

Julie is the Executive Director of Island Mountain Arts and the Producer of the ArtsWells Festival of All Things Art in the historic Cariboo town Wells, BC. In addition to the festival, Island Mountain Arts runs an annual School of the Arts featuring programs in music, visual arts and writing for professional artists and children and youth. She also published her first novel last year – The Grande Dames of the Cariboo.

Tim Des Islets

Tim Des Islets is a key member of the Canadian artist management company Bumstead Productions based in Toronto. With achievements in cultivating Canadian talent that has reached audiences both at home and abroad, Tim co-manages an award-winning roster of artists that includes The Trews, Tim Chaisson, and Poor Young Things.

Jaron Freeman Fox Jaron Freeman-Fox is a contemporary violinist living in Toronto. While an active producer, composer and session musician, Jaron maintains a busy touring schedule, playing 100-150 concerts a year. Working in a wide range of musical genres and practices, Jaron’s main focus in recent years has been on combining these seemingly disparate genres in his award winning ensemble Jaron Freeman-Fox & The Opposite of Everything.

Christy DiFelice

Christy is the Music Officer at the Toronto Arts Council.

She holds an M.A. in Ethnomusicology/Musicology from York University (2008), having concentrated on musics and cultures of the African Diaspora, specifically North American Jazz and Blues. She has previously worked with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the Fine Arts Cultural Studies Department at York University, and as a music copyist.

Nathan Garber Nathan Garber is widely recognized as a consultant, teacher, and author, for innovative, leading-edge thinking and challenging conventional ideas about how to build strong boards of directors. He brings more than 40 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, as a manager, board member, funder, and governance consultant.

QuiQue Escamilla

Mexican troubadour QuiQue Escamilla creates a fusion of Latin American rhythms such as Huapango, Ranchera, Cumbia with Folk, Rock, Reggae. His blend of ‘Music of the Americas’ carries a social and political commentary that supports, indigenous rights, anti-racism and tackles any form of oppression.

Eve Goldberg Eve Goldberg is a compelling writer and interpreter whose music spans folk, blues, country, swing, bluegrass, and gospel. She is one of the organizers of The Woods Music and Dance Camp, the founder of the Parkdale Ukulele Group, and a member of the folk/roots trio Gathering Sparks.

Rick Fenton

Rick Fenton is Executive Director of MusicOntario, coming from the same position at the Western Canadian Music Alliance and the BreakOut West Festival, Conference and the Western Canadian Music Awards. Rick brings with him over 30 years of experience in the music industry, including as a musician, producer at the CBC and JunoFest, Artistic Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and co-owner of the Winnipeg BBQ & Blues Festival.

Emm Gryner Combine bedroom folk and a soaring indie pop sensibility and you have the 10th studio album from savvy Canadian songstress, Emm Gryner. Following the 2012 release of her “Best Of” collection and the debut album from her new roots trio, Trent Severn, her new album “Torrential” recounts a tumultuous year in the life of the new mom.

Cathy Fink

Cathy Fink began her 40+ year music career in Montreal and Winnipeg in the 1970s, relocating to Maryland in the 1980s and forming a partnership with Marcy Marxer.

They have released 43 CDs, won two GRAMMY Awards and created over 25 instructional DVDs and audio courses to pass on the music.

Christine Guptill Dr. Christine Guptill is an Occupational Therapist, and daughter of PEI folk singer-songwriter Bryson Guptill. Her PhD and post-doctoral research focuses on musicians’ health. She is a founding member of the Health Advisory Team at National Youth Orchestra Canada. She plays oboe professionally, and guitar at home, in London, ON.

Aengus Finnan

A songwriter, Aengus toured North America for eight years before founding the Shelter Valley Folk Festival, FMO’s Art Beat, and co-founding the Gordon Lightfoot tribute series.

Prior to his current role as Executive Director of Folk Alliance International he served as Board President of the OCFF (FMO), and worked as Touring Officer for the Ontario Arts Council.

Jane Harbury Jane began her career as manager of the renowned Riverboat in Yorkville. She founded Jane Harbury Publicity (JHP) in 1988. Clients have included the Juno Awards, NXNE, Ontario Place Forum, BMG Music, The Chieftains, Borealis Records and Bluebird North, among others. Client roster includes Hugh’s Room and singer/songwriters, including Amy Campbell, Steven Taetz and Andria Simone.

Richard Flohil

Richard Flohil is a publicist, writer and concert promoter who has been involved with more than 100 artists’ careers in a 45-year career. Matt Large is president of Hello Darlin’ Productions, a multi-service arts presentation company located in Montreal which specializes in folk, roots, blue grass, and Americana concert presentation (over 400 since 2004).

Matt is also bandleader for noted Quebec blue grass band Notre Dame de Grass. Additionally, Matt is the co-founder and artistic director of the Montreal Festival Folk sur le Canal, the premier folk music festival in Montreal. Matt is the current president of Folk Music Canada.

Michelle Holtzkener

Michelle is a program consultant for the Ontario Music Office (Ontario Media Development Corporation) where she uses her wide breadth of music industry experience to help deliver the Ontario Music Fund to a range of companies across Ontario’s music ecosystem. Prior to joining OMDC, Michelle worked with Music Canada and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport on the Ontario Live Music Portal.

Presently a partner at Copperworks Consulting Inc., Mike Large is the former Director of Outreach Services of Music and Film in Motion (MFM). Previously, he was the Regional Evaluation Coordinator for FACTOR, and owned Large Management and Artist Development, a music management company that worked on developing every aspect of an artist’s career. Large has been the Audio Production Manager for the FMO Conference since 2010.

Graydon James

Graydon James is a dad, musician, producer, author, and former tap dancer. He has toured Canada with his band (Graydon James & the Young Novelists) and his wife (Laura Spink), played many festivals, released several albums, published a novel, and his son just started Junior Kindergarten.

Jani Lauzon

Jani Lauzon is a multidisciplinary artist of Metis background. Twice-nominated for JUNO awards, she has toured extensively throughout Canada and has lent her voice to countless film/theatre sound tracks as well as a long list of compilations and guest artist appearances.

Jani is also an accomplished traditional flutist. She is an award-winning film actress and a three-time Dora-nominated stage actress.

Andrew Karis

Andrew has worked in promotion, as a music supervisor and in arts administration, and occasionally tinkers with a new instrument and picks up the odd DJ gig around the city. After five years working to help develop the royalty division at the CFM, Andrew has spent the past two years working with ACTRA’s Recording Artists’ Collecting Society helping recording artists, managers and agents understand their rights and collect their royalties.

Jesse Lundy

Since 1995, Jesse Lundy has worked as a concert promoter and publicist for Electric Factory Concerts (9597) and Jack Utsick Presents (97-01). Since 2002 he has been with Point Entertainment as Talent Buyer and publicist, producing shows, concerts series and events including the Philadelphia Folk Festival (08-present). He also manages The Brakes and John Francis and teaches Music Industry at Drexel University.

James Keelaghan

For over 25 years James Keelaghan has been a touring performer and songwriter. He has grown from a coffee house act in his hometown of Calgary to a concert hall favourite in Canada. In addition he is currently the AD at the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival in Owen Sound, Ontario.

Bill Love

Bill has over 20 years experience developing high technology products, in areas as diverse as telecommunications, speech recognition, social media, video motion graphics and now, mobile apps. Bill is a father of three who plays hockey regularly and loves to play guitar and travel around the world.

Bruce Landon

Bruce Landon is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for SOCAN. He is an important facilitator in recruiting Canada’s emerging music and songwriting talent on behalf of SOCAN. Before joining the Membership department, Bruce worked with the Concert Distribution department, bridging Membership and Licensing operations.

Bruce is a music lover and was a singer-songwriter until his career path steered him to working on behalf of artists at SOCAN.

Brad McEwen

Brad McEwen is the founder and AD of the Mill Race Folk Society Music. He is a musician who has performed throughout Ontario and the UK. He has served on many Cambridge city council-appointed advisory committees and cofounded the Grand River Folk Community. He has served for over two years on the FMO Board and advocates strongly on behalf of both festivals and traditional music. Brad has received arts and culture awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

Dave Lang

As one of Toronto’s premier live sound engineers, Dave Lang has mixed the board for both local and internationally touring acts at Toronto’s venerable Hugh’s Room, The Mariposa Folk Festival, and many other esteemed venues.

He also plays upright bass for several Toronto bands including Houndstooth and The Wanted.

Arthur McGregor

Arthur McGregor founded Rooster’s Coffee House at Carleton U., managed Ottawa’s Commercial Tavern, drove taxi, was a founding director of the Ottawa Council for the Arts and a director of the OCFF, founded and runs the Ottawa Folklore Centre, is a founding director of the CFMAs, and performs solo, with his wife Wendy Moore (Celtiçity) and in the children’s group The Celtic Rathskallions. He has received Ottawa Folk Festival’s Helen Verger Award and FMO’s Estelle Klein Award.

Max Merrifield

Max Merrifield is the Executive Director of Northern Lights Festival Boréal in Sudbury, ON. Merrifield has been with the organization for three festivals as staff, and for a lifetime as a volunteer and festival lover. He is actively involved in the local arts scene in many ways.

Steeped in the folk tradition but born to innovate, evalyn parry’s genre-blurring work is inspired by intersections of history, auto/biography and contemporary social activism. An award-winning songwriter, poet and theatre creator, her show SPIN (featuring a bicycle as musical instrument) has toured the continent and returns to Toronto this November.

Scott Merrifield

A founder and past Artistic Director of Northern Lights Festival Boréal, Scott was also involved in OCFF in its early days and gave workshops at early conferences. Since 1992, he has been presenting approximately 8 house concerts per year in Sudbury. In 2008, Scott retired from his job as Director of Policy & Planning for FedNor, where he delivered community-based social and economic development programs throughout Northern Ontario, including extensive work with Aboriginal communities.

Katharine Partridge

Katharine is FMO’s vice president, serving in her second term. She is a founder of Shelter Valley Folk Festival and current vice-chair. In her other life, she is a communications and stakeholder engagement specialist advising international clients on sustainability issues. She has worked as a magazine journalist and prior to that as a stage manager for Canadian theatres.

Reza Moghaddas is owner-operator of Toronto’s Bamahang Studios, a Dora Mavor award-winning composer and active performing musician. In the 90’s he was a key member of Iran’s underground music scene, founding its first digital studio. An award-winning Canadian music artist & industry entrepreneur Patterson’s trademark is collaboration and diversity. Michael Murray is OAC’s Popular & World Music and Arts Service Organizations Officer and has volunteered on the boards of Jane’s Walk and ArtReach. Michael is a Certified Management Accountant and holds a B.Mus. from McGill University and an MBA from York University, and currently lectures at Centennial College.

Tom Power is an award winning musician, broadcaster and writer from St. John’s, Newfoundland. As a musician Tom is in high demand and leads his own band The Dardanelles to national and international acclaim. Tom began hosting Deep Roots while still a folklore student at Memorial University and recently became full-time host of CBC Radio 2 Morning. He likes a good cup of tea and thinks that the world just needs more Bluegrass.

Nicholas Murray

Nicholas Murray is a Barbados-born, Toronto based award-winning music producer, composer and musician who has toured 10 countries on 3 continents. Murray has produced dozens of singles and six albums, scored for film and theatre and is founder of legends Da Grass Roots and co-founder of LAL Forest.

Nicole Rochefort

In 2010 Nicole Rochefort established AIM: Artists In Motion, an independent booking agency representing all genres of music. With a focus on building artists’ touring careers, AIM brings a new energy and approach to the concert touring industry. Nicole is an instructor at The Harris Institute and former director of the Board for Folk Music Ontario.

Hannah Shira Naiman

Hannah Shira Naiman grew up just north of Toronto, but all around her was the musical tradition of the Appalachian Mountains. Her banjo-driven songs draw on folk traditions and themes, and “are a little bit crooked, a little bit new.”

Candace Shaw

Bon vivant Candace Shaw likes whiskey (neat), language (salty), and people who pick up the tab (frequently). As a writer, emcee, artistic director, and arts administrator she has been active in the music industry for 20 years.

She currently works at Harbourfront Centre and runs the music website SecretFrequency.ca.

Jory Nash

Jory Nash is an award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter who blends elements of folk, jazz, blues, soul and pop into an original stew of sound. Jory plays guitar, piano and banjo, has a warm, intimate vocal style and is a revered storyteller to boot. He has released seven critically acclaimed CDs and begins work on his 8th in mid-2014.

Amy Thiessen

Artist/ Yoga instructor Amy Thiessen has been delving into musical and yogic endeavours for over a decade. Her focus: teach students, and train teachers, to work with individual body types and customize the practice to the individual. Thiessen integrates yoga into her life to minimize the effects touring.

Gabrielle Papillon

Hailed as “one of the finest new songwriters in Canada,” (Tom Power, CBC) ECMA-nominated songwriter Gabrielle Papillon sings stories real and imagined. Words, melancholy melodies, and lush harmonies are her currency.

Equipped with an extensive knowledge of arts and music, and a two decade-plus award-winning career as a wellrespected international DJ/Producer and events producer in addition to a solid background in arts administration, TK has been applying his broad range of artistic sensibilities to his role of Arts & Culture Program Manager of Pride Toronto since late 2010.

Liana White is the Executive Director of the Canadian Federation of Musicians. White has worked for the CFM since 1996 [then AFM Canada], and in 2012 was promoted to her current position. As a music industry professional for nearly 20 years, White has gained a wealth of knowledge and helps musicians with everything from crossing borders to insurance programs to revenue streams and more.

Julia Train After graduating from Harris Institute for the Arts, where she studied Recorded Arts Management, Julia Train went to work for the CMRRA’s Royalties Administration department. She was a valued member of the FACTOR team from 2008-2011 as a Submissions Coordinator and Communications Manager. Currently, Julia is the Senior Manager of Communications and Outreach Director at the Musicians’ Rights Organization Canada (MROC) ensuring that musicians receive the recompense that they are entitled.

Ottawa’s Jill Zmud gave birth to a daughter in April, and mere weeks later released her sophomore album “small matters of life and death”, which was recently nominated for a CFMA. HISTORIC VENUE SPOTLIGHT: THE RIVERBOAT

In the mid 1960’s, Toronto’s Yorkville neighborhood was a renowned musical mecca. Like Greenwich Village in New York City and Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, Yorkville housed a vibrant and thriving artistic community and served as a launch pad for some of the era’s brightest musical talents.

Situated within a seven-block radius that is bound by Bloor Street and Davenport Rd. and extends from Yonge Street to Avenue Road, Yorkville was full of clubs, coffee houses, experimental art galleries and bohemian boutiques, bustling with a combination of acoustic and electric performances every night.

There was Chez Monique (88 Yorkville Ave.), The Mynah Bird (114 Yorkville Ave.) and Penny Farthing (112 Yorkville Ave.) amongst so many others,

and then there was The Riverboat coffee house.

Owned by Bernie Fiedler (a one time coffee salesmen), and located below street level at 134 Yorkville Ave., The Riverboat officially opened its doors in October of 1964, and quickly grew to become the epicenter of the city’s folk music and counter culture scenes.

With its close quarters, red booths, pine walls and brass poles, The Riverboat served as the perfect setting for intimate nightly performances but was also very poorly laid out. “The entrance was on the north side of Yorkville,” explains Jane Harbury who managed The Riverboat during the early 70’s and who many came to know as Riverboat Jane. “You went down the steps and it was very narrow; the stage really only played 38

out to the west side of the room. It was just like a submarine,” she said, “and actually Ramblin’ Jack Elliot used to make us crazy because he’d always walk in and say ‘v-elcome to the U-boat’––we didn’t like that very much.”

The venue’s sound system wasn’t very sophisticated. “The PA system was really none existent,” says Harbury. “We had a couple of mics and an on and off switch at the back; it was all very primitive. Sometimes somebody would say ‘can I have a little more reverb’ and we’d say ‘sure’ and one of us would look at the back and pretend to adjust things, they’d say ‘much better, thank you,’ and that was kind of how it went but we always made it work. Since the room was so small and people were there to listen, you almost didn’t need a sound system anyway.”

Being that The Riverboat was a coffee house, alcohol wasn’t typically served. Instead people came to enjoy coffee, tea, hot lemonade and apple strudel. In the venue’s early days cover charge was a mere buck-seventy-five and patrons could catch three shows a night between Tuesday and Sunday. “Playing six nights a week was such an incredible opportunity for people, especially the young

Canadian artists because they were given a chance to build an audience,” says Harbury. “Bernie was amazing on that level––he was definitely ahead of the curve––people would die to have that opportunity these days.”

Over the course of nearly fifteen years the small coffee house came to host everyone from Howlin’ Wolf, Big Mama Thorton, Simon and Garfunkel, Jeff Buckley and Arlo Guthrie to Buddy Guy, Kris Kristofferson, James Taylor and Bruce Cockburn amongst countless others. The venue also played a significant role in the early careers of Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell who were two of The Riverboat’s most frequent performers.

“Everybody played The Riverboat,” says music publicist Richard Flohil whose career here in Canada has spanned more than fifty years. “Just take a look at any of the posters.

It ranged from hardcore folkies like Mike Seeger, who was the half-brother of Pete Seeger, to John Hammond, who’s an old blues guy, all the way to Neil Young. I think Bernie just really understood that even though it was a small room, he could still get very, very good people in there, and he always did.

It was about the quality of the act, and Bernie had the nerve to go out there and find strong up-and-comers, like Neil, Gordon and Joni, who were on the cusp

of really great careers.”

As hippie-culture began to fade into the excess of the 70’s, Yorkville’s landscape slowly began to change. Pressure from greedy developers, which sent rent and property taxes through the roof, drove many of the neighbourhood’s residents and small business owners out of the beautiful Victorian row houses that lined Yorkville Ave., and away from the prosperous artistic community they had come to know and love.

“You’ve got to imagine,” says Flohil. “One day there was all this music happening in Yorkville, and it wasn’t just folk music, there were rock bands and there were a bunch of clubs at the time, and there was this aura of ‘us against them.’ We were all out there having a good time while the ‘nine-to-fivers’ were at home in bed, and then all at once Yorkville effectively closed down––it literally happened over night.”

The Riverboat was one of the last original Yorkville hot spots to go (of-

ficially closing its doors in June of 1978) but not before owner Bernie Fiedler hosted a weeklong wake.

The celebration, which featured performances from Murray McLauchlan and Dan Hill, who both got their start at The Riverboat, saw hundreds of people pass through the tiny coffee house that had played such an important role in shaping what is still known today as the ‘Canadian sound,’ to bid it a final farewell.

“Yorkville was an amazing place in those days,” says Harbury. “It was really quite incredible, a comfortable place to be, it felt safe and I don’t remember us doing anything else but living it. The Riverboat was really like a family,” she adds. “Once the artists had been there, each time they returned it was like they were coming home.”

Jon founded and has run Kelp Records for 20 years, and MEGAPHONO, a music placement company that licenses independent music for synchronization uses in film, television, advertising, video games and new media, for the past four years. Jon holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa with a major in international management.

Kellylee Evans

The Canadian rising star singer/songwriter Kellylee Evans is a chameleon-like performer, whose natural charm and improvisational jazz vocal style have shined on her adventurous journey through jazz, soul, pop and hip-hop over the past decade. “I inherited a real joie de vivre from my mother, and my French is pretty decent now. But music really is one language worldwide, as is dance. When I’m on a stage, I’m happy and want to share that with the audience. I keep reminding myself how lucky I am.”

Preetam Sengupta

Preetam runs Letting Artists Make Art (LAMA), dedicated to helping (predominantly folk-roots) musicians make a living through their music. Balancing the business and the stage, he writes and sings solo and in a band called Crash Bamboo, and works closely with Northstarr Entertainment, a leader in Canadian Urban music.

SONGS FROM THE HEART JURY Graham Lindsey

Graham Lindsey is a web-designing, video-producing, instrument-playing, relatively recent addition to the Folk Community. He plays with The Sarah Burnell Band, co-founded the Ottawa chapter of Men Folk Singing, and is on the board of directors of the CFMAs. Graham is a website designer and video producer, focusing on work with musicians and music-related organizations. When he has some free time, he aspires to catch up on a little of the lost sleep, but instead will likely be playing tunes at a nearby pub.

Chris MacLean

An award-winning songwriter, and performer, Chris’s “bell-like voice” has been featured in numerous musical configurations. Chris is the 2008 recipient of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award; the 2008 OCFF/FMO Songs From the Heart winner for best historical song; and was nominated for a 2010 CFMA for Engllish Songwriter of the Year. She is also a Voice Movement Therapy practitioner.

Greg Torrington

Greg Torrington has over 35 years of experience in music. He’s been a musician, radio programmer, journalist, major label A&R Manager, artist manager and consultant. Since 2010 he’s been a music programmer for Galaxie/Stingray Music, overseeing its Folk-Roots, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic and Alt-Country/Americana channels in both Canada and the US.

Josée Vaillancourt

La directrice générale de Réseau Ontario, Josée est titulaire Baccalauréat en commerce et spécialisée en ressources humaines et marketing. With a new album ‘The Raven’s Sun’ (August 2014), MacLellan continues to grow her audiences across Canada and Internationally.

Award-winning Cape Breton fiddler Gillian Boucher, described by New Zealand’s Daily Mail as “enthralling, not only with the serene beauty of her music but with her stage persona and skills,” presents an innovative yet sensitive approach to traditional music with long-time guitarist and friend Seph Peters.

Hannah Shira Naiman Hannah Shira Naiman grew up just north of Toronto, but all around her was the musical tradition of the Appalachian Mountains. Her banjo-driven songs draw on folk traditions and themes, and “are a little bit crooked, a little bit new.”

Jill Zmud Ottawa’s Jill Zmud gave birth to a daughter in April, and mere weeks later released her sophomore album “small matters of life and death”. Nominated for the Canadian Folk Music Awards “Contemporary Album of the Year”, the soulful rootsy album weaves together loss, hope, and a 40-year-old reel-to-reel tape belonging to an uncle Jill never met.

Patrick Brealey Shining a modern light on the roots of North American popular music, Patrick Brealey blends elements of folk, country and blues to deliver lyrically driven songs with a uniquely powerful voice. Currently in the studio, Patrick next album will be released in fall 2014 on BC-based label Boompa Records.

Lora Bidner is a singer-songwriter from Ottawa. Her haunting vocal melodies, loop pedal harmonies and eclectic instrumentals including guitar, ukulele, hang drum and piano make for an inspiring performance. Lora’s original music ranges from upbeat to eerie and atmospheric.

Martine Fortin Playing piano since the age of five, Martine Fortin’s repertoire consists of a half dozen original songs influenced by jazz, blues, pop and soul. Martine won Aboriginal Idol Sudbury in 2013, as well as the La Brunante prize in 2014. She was recently chosen for the APCM mentorship program, for emerging Ontario francophone musical artists to develop their craft, stage presence, and repertoire.

Campbell Woods Campbell is a singer songwriter with roots in Smiths Falls, Ontario. In his songs he draws on themes of heartbreak, loss and the hope for redemption. His sound is a mix of blues, folk and just enough old-time country to get your feet moving.

Jazmine Wykes Jazmine is a 17 year old student from Kingston. She has been singing and writing songs since a young age. She took piano lessons from age six to eight, and started picking it up again in 2012, writing songs of her own. Jazmine learned how to play the guitar from her father in 2011 and has been writing songs ever since.

Jazmine currently busks with her banjo playing friend and performs at local gigs.

YOUTH MENTORS Mélanie Brulée ‪Mélanie Brulée is Canada’s indie Edith Piaf, a bilingual mix of folk, cabaret, country, jazz and pop. A “quirky and inventive” live performer, she often blurs the line between audience and artist for an interactive experience. Previous knowledge of the French language not required, she charms easily with her rich voice and sweetly sassy stage presence.

Benjamin Rogers

(Taylor Mitchell Bursary recipient) Benjamin pushes the boundaries of traditional folk music. Combining fiddle, guitar and mandolin with his contemporary lyrics and unique voice, he creates music that draws you in and wraps around you like a warm blanket. Benjamin’s energetic stage presence stems from years as a street performer. He has developed his fiddle technique drawing its roots from the East Coast and Old Time and transforming it into his own style.

Drew Gonsalves Drew Gonsalves is a Trinidadian-Canadian songwriter whose music has been described as “a unique, stylistic, transnational composite of rhythm, poetry and activist journalism.”

(Exclaim) He is the bandleader of Toronto-based Kobo Town whose latest album Jumbie in the Jukebox topped the European World Music Charts last year and was nominated for a 2014 Juno Award. The group tours regularly throughout Europe, North America and the Caribbean.

Brian Kobayakawa Brian is a bassist, composer and aspiring producer. Until 2011 he co-led The Creaking Tree String Quartet, who released 4 albums, won 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and were nominated for 4 Junos. He has played on over 60 albums. He currently tours with Serena Ryder and Corin Raymond.

David Newland Annie Sumi Annie Sumi is a young folk artist who falls into the hearts of her listeners. A free-spirited girl of the Earth, she gathers inspiration from life, love, and the endless wonders of the world. She is an aspiring Canadian musician that is continuously growing in the music industry - always keeping one foot on the ground.

Writer, performer and stage host David Newland has earned airplay on CBC, Galaxie, and folk radio nationwide. His musical adventures include journeys by train, ship, and voyageur canoe. David co-founded RootsMusic.ca and has served on the boards of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals and Shelter Valley Folk Festival.

Tannis Slimmon Tannis is “a breathtaking vocalist with a bright, angelic disposition”. Her music has been dubbed “infectious, uplifting and thought-provoking all at the same time”, and her awardwinning albums have solidified her reputation as one of the best roots music singers in the country. She was chosen CFMA’s Contemporary Vocalist of the Year in 2008.

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

Welcome to the 2014 Annual General Meeting of Folk Music Ontario. I hope that some of you were around last year when we had to report the worst financial results of our history.

Because this year is different.

After last year’s devastating deficit of over $64,000, we instituted a two-pronged attack on our financial situation – we slashed spending, and we worked to find new revenue.

For our fiscal year 2014 we were most successful at cutting costs, and we are proud to announce that we brought in a modest $13,700 surplus. I am quite happy to give much of the credit for this to our staff; Alka and Jennifer have worked tirelessly with very few resources to keep FMO functioning at a high level even as they cut virtually every line in our budget.

I say ‘much of the credit’, because no one person is responsible for the solution just as no one person was responsible for the problem. FMO functions as a team, and a

pretty good team, and the board played its part in helping to turn the ship around.

We generated ideas, ran fundraising efforts, and when it came right down to the wire, a couple of board members provided some bridge financing. It’s a committed board.

We still have a long way to go. We’re sitting on an accumulated deficit of some $86,000 and it will probably take another 3 or 4 years to eliminate it completely. But, we’re on a much better track and we’re showing huge improvements.

No organization wants to spend all its time cutting expenses. It is a sad and dispiriting way to exist. So, our other goal was to increase funding – partly to reduce our deficit and partly so that we could lift our eyes to a more distant horizon and create new goals for FMO, new programs for our members, and new strengths for our community. This year is showing some of the fruits of that search. Our ED has found new funding for our Export Development Program - significant funding that has allowed us to bring in more presenters from more regions. We have new funding to bring presenters from northern Ontario.

This year we also received funding to run a festivals-only weekend in May, where festivals could meet to discuss the kinds of nut-and-bolts issues that are vital to keeping them strong. Another festival retreat is scheduled for the 68

spring of 2015. And our staff and board continued to make concerted efforts to attend as many festivals as they could, in order to better understand the unique attributes of each festival – and also to enjoy the marvelous music that is the foundation of our work (and not a single one of our staff and board would be here if we didn’t love the music).

The FMO board set up an advocacy committee to try to raise our profile in the larger political world in order to better represent our members.

As a result of the work of this committee, our ED was invited to sit on the steering committee for a program of Music Canada to develop an economic profile for the live music industry in Ontario.

We are launching a new 5-year Strategic Plan. Longterm strategic planning is the way that we develop a pathway to follow. For an organization such as FMO, the board represents our members and develops the vision and delivers the oversight. Staff delivers the programming that arises from the board’s vision. We are currently reaching out to our members to find out where they want us to go over the next five years, and we encourage every member to participate fully in our surveys and discussions. It’s the only way that we can know what you’re thinking and it’s the only way we can develop a plan that will help you reach your goals.

Of course, plans can take you only so far. Over the next five years circumstances will change and FMO will be required to change in order to deal with those new circumstances. We’re confident in our ability to deal with adversity, we’re also confident in our abil-

ity to deal with success. As we move onto more solid financial ground, we’re excited about the possibilities for new programs and new growth. We think that we have a great staff, and are proud of the work that they do on your behalf. We thank them, and we thank you, our mem-

bers, for your ongoing support.

And to Dan Greenwood, Jane Harbury, and Adam Brown – all of whom are stepping off the board – we thank you for your years of service to Folk Music Ontario. It has been a privilege to work with you.

This year saw a lot of transition.

On the Board of Directors, Alex Sinclair became the President, replacing Scott Merrifield, and Jan Cody became the Treasurer, replacing Tamara Kater. On

the staff side, Lynn Rae became the bookkeeper, replacing Maggie TonerGaston and I became the new Executive Director, replacing Peter MacDonald. It has been challenging, to say

the least. Even with this transition, we have worked hard at making sure that the conference represents what is of interest to you.

Speaking of transitions, we have also had the opportunity this year to change our name to Folk Music Ontario/Musique Folk de l’Ontario. With

Folk Music Ontario (FMO) has had a very positive and active year. The year started when we received funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canadian Arts Presentation Fund (CAPF) to hold a Member Festival Retreat. The Retreat was the first one specifically for festival arts administrators (Executive Directors and Board Members) to come together for workshops that affect not-for-profit organizations. There were 25 people that represented various member festivals across Ontario and it was held in Orillia. FMO has also received funding to hold its second festival retreat in the spring.

We were also fortunate to receive funding, again from the Department of Canadian Heritage through CAPF’s Development Component, to bring six presenters from Northern Ontario to the conference. This is an amazing opportunity for presenters from Northern Ontario

to experience the conference, network and check out various artists that will be showcasing throughout the conference.

Over this past summer, I had a chance to attend many member festivals, including Northern Lights Festival Boréal in Sudbury, RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa, Stewart Park Festival in Perth, Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival in Owen Sound, Peterborough Folk Festival, Eaglewood Folk Festival in Pefferlaw and the Ottawa Folk Festival. I will also be attending other conferences and events in order to promote Folk Music Ontario.

This year we partnered with APCM (Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique) to have one of their youth members join our Youth Program to experience the program at the FMO Conference. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Martine Fortin to the FMO Conference. As well, I would like to congratulate Benjamin Rogers as the recipient of the Taylor Mitchell Bursary. We know that the bursary goes a long way to help young musicians accomplish their dreams by attending the conference.

Folk Music Ontario is collaborating with the Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMAs), this year in Ottawa, by presenting the Art Beat Program during the CFMAs. Selected nominees will be asked to participate in the program and provide outreach to various hospices, schools and hospi71

tals. Jill Zmud will be coordinating the program. As well, FMO will be presenting the New / Emerging Artist Award.

Our fiscal year end changed from June 30th to March 31st in order to keep funds received from grants within the year that they are provided. It has helped immensely to keep everything in one year rather than having to defer funding.

FMO was able to reduce its deficit by $13,700, so our accumulated deficit is now at $86,747 and this comes with great costcutting of the expenses. Reducing the deficit further will still take another 3 – 4 years, but we are on our way up.

Public funding from our government partners has been stable for this year. We are particularly grateful for the ongoing operational funding provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Arts Council. We are still trying to bring in more private funding through sponsorships and to sign companies and organizations to multi-year sponsorship deals. Earned revenues have been up this year and we are grateful for the support from the Ontario Media Development Corporation for the Ontario Music Fund, FACTOR, and all of our sponsors.

Folk Music Ontario has come a long way and we hope that with the changes to the conference, you will have a great time. We are also looking forward to reducing our deficit in the upcoming year.

This offers a snapshot of our financial position at a specific point in time, in this case, March 31, 2014, as that represented Folk Music Ontario's "end of year".

1. Statement of Financial Position (aka Balance Sheet)

What do these statements really mean?

At the end of each fiscal year, a designated accountant (called "auditor") reviews all of Folk Music Ontario’s financial activities. They make sure that the statements prepared by Folk Music Ontario management reflect the true picture of the finances of the organization. As well, the auditor performs a few "random" checks of various transactions. At the end of the audit process, the accountant issues financial statements that they, by virtue of their professional designation, assure are accurate.

4. Statement of Cash Flows

Key information on an income statement:

It gives an account of revenue and expenses over a period of time. It answers the question: over the last 12** months how much have we earned and spent?

This statement is most helpful to compare against the previous year.

3. Statement of Operations (aka Income Statement)

 Is the organization carrying an annual and/or operating deficit? Any negative number in the "total", end of year, column indicates there is a deficit.  Does the organization have "savings"? Any positive number in the "total", end of year, column indicates there is a surplus (i.e., savings).

Key information in a Statement of Changes to Cash Position:

Over periods of time, organizations can accumulate savings (assets) and/or accumulate debt (liabilities). Much like the Statement of Financial Position, this statement shows what Folk Music Ontario is worth, after assets are balanced with liabilities. However, it shows the snapshot over a two year period and helps to explain any changes to the net worth of the organization.
