The president’s message

Happy spring! I consider myself lucky to have an office that looks out onto a stretch of trees, a scrubby field pretending to be lawn and a stream. When warm days arrive, I open the doors wide to let in the birdsong and stream play. They offer me a little reminder that for this moment at least the world is all right. Folk music does the same. It’s an honour to work with a Board of Directors and staff who are committed to and passionate about Folk Music Ontario’s purpose to support the growth and development of the folk music community and industry. Over the past several months FMO has undertaken an incredible amount of important work in achieve our five strategies in pursuit of that purpose: • Embed Inclusivity and Diversity: By everyone in everything, every day • Increase & Diversify Revenue: Strengthen existing

and develop new and innovative revenue streams • Expand Member Value: Deliver services year-round targeted to evolving member needs • Maximize Collaboration: Create collaborative opportunities to achieve our vision • Be the Advocate: Raise the profile of FMO and champion folk music We have partnered with Ottawa’s MEGAPHONO Festival, APCM (Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique), Folk Music Canada and MusicOntario to build strength and diversity. In March, we presented successful concerts in Ottawa and Toronto to expand FMO services year-round and pilot a vital new revenue stream. In May, we unveiled our refreshed FMO Awards program, introducing a new Recording Artist of the Year Award, sponsored by the Re-

by Katharine Partridge

cording Artists’ Collecting Society, to expand member value. And our Executive Director, Alka Sharma, and fellow board members have supported showcases, panel presentations and advocacy of FMO and its members at Folk Alliance, East Coast Music Awards, Canada Music Week, and other local and international events. I’d like to thank our board for their contributions to these initiatives and others that ensure we are building a vibrant, inclusive organization. I’d also like to thank our staff – Alka, Jennifer, Carolyn, who was hired recently to head up member services, and our new JCP volunteer coordinator, Shelley Ann. You are an amazing team! Now, let the summer begin! Hope you see you all at a festival or two or three over the coming months. Sing!

FMO members know how to save! The 2017 conference is only four months away. Don’t forget to purchase membership in FMO and register early to get the best rates. FMO membership is $49.72 for one year, and members registering by August 31 pay the Early Bird rate of $360.95. Compare that to the non-member Early Bird rate ($479.60) - the savings add up to nearly $70. Visit www.folkmusicontario.ca for more information.

the Executive director’s MESSAGE by Alka Sharma

It’s finally spring and the warm weather is certainly welcomed! We are happy to have held the annual FMO Festival Member’s Retreat. The retreat is targeted to our festival members’ Executive Directors, Board members and festival administrators, and was held over the weekend of May 5-7 in Sudbury, ON. We were pleased to have a session moderated by Clayton Windatt, Executive Director, Aboriginal Curatorial Collective. He spoke on Engaging the Indigenous Community at Festivals. Many discussions occurred and lots of topics came out of the retreat for the conference and for next year’s retreat. The retreat would not take place without the financial support of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The organizing committee this year was made up of Darin Addison (Home County Folk Festival), Max Merrifield (Northern Lights Festival Boréal), Peter Zwarich (River & Sky Music/Camping Festival) and Ruth Parsons (Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival).

I want to specifically thank Carolyn Sutherland, FMO’s NEW Membership Services Coordinator, for facilitating a great weekend had by all! As well, thank you to Max and Peter for hosting the group over the weekend. Speaking of Carolyn Sutherland, we were very excited to have Carolyn start her new position with FMO on April 1. She will also be continuing her role as the Export Development Coordinator along with her duties as the Membership Services Coordinator. This position was created to serve FMO’s members and if you have any enquiries, please feel free to contact her directly. She will be happy to help! We have also hired Shelley Ann Morris as the new Volunteer Coordinator, through the Job Creation Partnership program provided by Ottawa Festivals. We welcome Shelley and look forward working with her in this capacity. FMO will continue to collaborate with APCM (Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique) to allow a young Francophone artist to participate in the newly titled Developing Artists Program (formerly the Youth Program). FMO will pair them up with a Francophone mentor for the program. As we start planning for the 2017 conference – October 19-22 at the Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel & Suites in Mississauga – we are eager to produce another thought-provoking and interesting weekend. The Awards Brunch will again take place on Sunday of

the conference weekend. The awards themselves have been revamped, with Stingray Rising Star English and French awards, FMO Songs From the Heart awards (formerly the sub-category awards), and the new Recording Artist of the Year Award, sponsored and presented by the Recording Artists’ Collecting Society (RACS). Recipients of all of these awards will be invited to perform at the Awards Showcase on Thursday, October 19. We are excited about all these changes and hope that you will join us for this inaugural showcase. As many of you may know, Jennifer Ellis, FMO’s Office Manager, is taking a leave of three months to recover after her hip surgery. She will be out of the office from late July until the end of October. However, she will be at the conference as an attendee and will be able to relax and enjoy the music! Jennifer is vital to FMO and we are going to miss her while she is away and look forward to when she’s back in the office, new hip and all, in November. I would like to thank the Board of Directors of FMO for their consistent dedication to the organization and all the volunteer work that they put into FMO. If you see anyone from this great group of people at a festival this summer, please feel free to speak with them. Looking forward to seeing many of you at all the music festivals! Have a great summer.

The selected recipients of the various awards will be invited to perform their winning songs at the Awards Showcase, which will kick off the conference on Thursday, October 19. The awards themselves will be presented at the Awards Brunch on Sunday, October 22. FMO Board elections FMO’s Board of Directors is a dedicated and enthusiastic group of thirteen volunteers, elected democratically by the membership via advanced balloting during the fall and at the annual conference in October. This fall, four directors on the Board will be completing their terms, and the new slate of candidates will be published on the FMO website in the next few weeks. The FMO membership is made up of many different individuals, organizations, and festivals who all have their own likes, dislikes, needs, wants, and points of view. Voting ensures that all FMO members get a voice, electing people to the board who can represent their interests and concerns. To help you form your decision, FMO will feature “getting to know you” articles about each of the candidates in our regular eNews issues. And to read more about the Board election process, please visit www.folkmusicontario.ca – click on About Folk Music Ontario / Board of Directors. Advance balloting for FMO members will begin September 16, 2017. Please make sure that your voice is heard, and cast a ballot!
