Hot Caribbean Parties You Can Still Crash! by

Take heart. Even if you missed out on World Cup 2014, there are still some excellent opportunities to get your flirt on in exotic, tropical locations with beautiful beaches and great nightlife.

Sumfest – Jamaica, 7/13-19 You’ve got to hop on this quick if you’re going to head down to Montego Bay to one of the hottest outdoor music parties in the Caribbean. This year the lineup includes Beenie Man, Jah Cure, Sean Paul and Tessanne Chin among many others, as well as American artists Wiz Khalifa and Future. The dopeness factor is off the chains!

Crop Over – Barbados, 8/4 Although the Crop Over celebration actually takes place over much of the summer, the Grand Kadooment, or big parade takes place in August. Some of the hottest Soca acts play at Crop Over and Barbados is known for its world class beaches and diverse nightlife attractions, so you can party hard Bajan style. And if you’re lucky, you just might score a Rihanna sighting. The Bajan beauty is known to be on hand to celebrate with her country men and women clad in costume. 4

Caribana – Toronto, 7/31-8/3 While Toronto is obviously not in the Caribbean (no beaches), you’d never know it from the masses of Caribbean nationals that descend upon the laid back Canadian city to congregate at North America’s largest public festival! The celebration starts before hand with several smaller events leading up to and culminating in the mas parade, but the hot parties and shows are definitely arranged around that final weekend. Utopia – Jamaica, 8/1 The sight of taut, sexy bodies glistening lightly with sweat, pulsating to the hypnotic trance of electronic dance music is so intoxicating that you could skip the rum entirely, and feel like you hadn’t missed a thing. This relative newcomer to the Jamaican party scene is all-inclusive with a menu to die for, including alcohol. And we’ve learned over the years that rum has a way of making everything better. What better way to celebrate Emancipation Day!

August Monday – Anguilla, 8/4 If dancing in a beer and booze induced haze on yachts and party boats is your idea of fun, then you’ll love Anguilla for their big annual Carnival party at Sandy Ground. Start in the wee hours of the morning with J’Ouvert, followed by boat races and ending in the island’s biggest bash. Make like the locals from neighboring St. Maarten/Martin and St. Barth head over for the weekend to take advantage of the island’s pristine beaches.

MARCUS touches down in

MIAMI Celebrity Culinary Maestro. Author. Changemaker. Humanitarian. Marcus Samuelsson wears many hats in addition to the chef’s cap that he’s mostly widely known for. As a board member and huge supporter of Careers through the Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP), which exposes at-risk and underserved high school students to careers in the restaurant industry, as well as through the numerous other causes he champions, he has demonstrated himself to be a true Renaissance Man. And of course, fittingly, there is his still-hot restaurant in Harlem, The Red Rooster.

OCEAN Splash caught up with Marcus at Macy’s Dadeland in Miami to ask him about food, travel, multi-tasking, and if we’ll ever get a Caribbean outpost of any of his famed eateries. This is so exciting that you’re doing a cooking demo at Macy’s here in Miami! When did you join the Macy’s Culinary Council and why did a partnership with Macy’s feel like a fit to you? I’ve been part of the council for over ten years. Working with Macy’s gives me the best opportunity to share my food with people outside of New York who are excited about cooking and learning new flavors. In addition to being a member of the Macy’s Culinary Council, you are also a board member and big champion of C-CAP, attend numerous galas and benefits and I often see you at Red Rooster either in the kitchen or on the floor greeting patrons. How on earth did you find time to write your New York Times bestselling book, “Yes, Chef: A Memoir”? It was a six year process. I spent a lot of time writing, planning and then rewriting as my journey changed. I try to carry a notebook with me in case I find myself needing to write. You stay busy! What do you do to relax? I like to go for a run in the park, sit in my backyard and grill with my wife and friends or travel. Many of our readers like to unwind with a drink after work. Have you tried any new wines or other drinks that you’d recommend to them? Recently, I’ve been into white sangria. It is so refreshing and satisfying and great for summer weather. I had the pleasure of meeting your beautiful wife Maya in midtown last year. Where did you two go on your last vacation and where do you think you’ll go on your next one? We were in London and Paris earlier this spring and we will be doing a lot of travel over the summer. Speaking of travel, I’m sure our readers want to know, do you have any plans in the works to open up a restaurant in Miami, or the Caribbean? The Jerked Rooster, perhaps? I don’t have any plans at the moment, though I do love the idea. I did just open a pop-up restaurant in Bermuda at the Hamilton Princess and will be opening a permanent location there in 2015. oceanstylemagazine.com

SAMBA’S ON A ROLL

South Florida-based food blogger Melanie Garcia of Mitch and Mel Take Miami takes us on a sushi stroll to check out the Coral Gables outpost of Sushi Samba. Decorative. Festive. Damn good sushi. That’s the synopsis of Sushi Samba Coral Gables. Ominously located across the street from the long-time favorite, Sushi Maki, this new dig is ready to reign as the cool, new kid in town. I seldom visit the Lincoln Road location (Sushi Samba Miami Beach), mostly because of the tourist infestation. The food experiences on several occasions have been highly unmemorable, so this lunch at Sushi Samba Coral Gables was all an overall pleasant surprise. I tried a pretty large assortment of dishes. From Crispy Taquitos and sashimi to the Robata grilled salmon and dessert. Needless to say this was breakfast, lunch and dinner because the boyfriend and I slightly overdid it. The salmon was damned tasty (warning, it was dripping with honey) and he devoured the sashimi, which we both agreed was fresh and seasoned perfectly. The standout dish was most definitely the Sushi Samba Coral Gables roll. Holy goodness to both rolls we tried (also devoured the El Topo roll.) The eponymous Coral Gables roll looks a little like an edible spider or some form of contemporary art, and it’s absolutely delicious, made with steamed lobster, avocado, red jalapeño, spicy Japanese rice crackers, sweet chili, key lime mayo and tobiko (flying fish roe that has a mild, smoky taste). Sushi success. Mel’s recommendation: The innovation and taste are as equally impressive as the venue. However, it’s only fair that we mention that it’s a tad bit pricey. But, it’s a good spot for a classy, sushi date night… is that a thing? If you’re making that a thing, this is your place. Standout Dishes Coral Gables Roll Sashimi Tiradito Assortment of Four

BR AZILIAN BEAUTY INGREDIENTS by Tuere

Randall and Shana Guins

Known for their exotic allure, Brazilian women are widely regarded as some of the most gorgeous women on the planet. Good genes do their part, owed in part to a rather pulchritudinous blend of African, Indigenous and European ancestry throughout much of the population, but Brazil is also blessed with a cornucopia of plants and fruits chock full of beauty-inducing properties, as well as other natural resources, that promote glowing skin, lustrous hair and fight the hands of time.

Açai. This Central and South American native berry, which closely resembles a grape/ blueberry hybrid, packs an antioxidant punch that protects healthy cells from free radical damage that can speed aging.

Eminence Organics Firm Skin Açai Moisturizer Moisturize, rejuvenate and firm while plumping skin to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Super by Dr. Nicholas Perricone Sweet Clean Face & Eye Cleanser With Acai Anthocyanins. Dr. Nicholas Perricone, who declared açai one of his top 10 superfoods on Oprah, harnesses its ability to fight oxidative stress in one of his beauty line’s cleansers. 12

Babassu Oil. Extracted from the seeds of a Brazilian palm tree, this oil is a rich emollient used in skin and hair products, much in the same way that coconut oil is used. Surface Bassu Oil, Gold Hydrating oil This intensely hydrating hair oil tames frizzies and flyaways leaving behind shiny locks without that greasy feeling.

Sand. With over 4,600 miles of coastline, this is one commodity Brazil has in abundance. Highly effective as an exfoliant, the custom of rubbing sand mixed with tanning oil over the skin at the beach is widely touted as the “Brazilian cellulite treatment.”

Unrefined Babassu Oil Like coconut oil, unrefined Babassu Oil is solid at room temperature, melts on contact with skin and soothes a variety of skin conditions, including eczema.

WAXING

each customer fresh at their time of service, so every customer has their own wax ready for them.

expert tips from

NOEMIE

GRUPENMAGER by Tuere

Randall

Summer is officially here in the Northern Hemisphere, which also means that many of us will spend a lot more time getting de-fuzzed so that we can look good in the season’s hottest swimwear. We caught up to hair removal expert Noemi Grupenmager, CEO / Founder of Uni K Wax Centers , to ask about the “dos” and “don’ts” of bikini waxing.

What is the number one problem that women complain about with waxing? The number one complaint is that waxing hurts, but it doesn’t have to be that way. For example, 21 years ago, I created a wax that is elastic, made of all natural ingredients and applied at body temperature. This revolutionary wax allowed the application process to change, as well. Now you can wax a larger part of the body in a quicker time. The result was a wax that is ouchless, gentle on the skin when applied and removed, and more effective in hair removal due to its elasticity than any other wax available, all in a fraction of the time other waxing takes. How can women make their waxing sessions less painful? Properly preparing your skin for your waxing appointment is the key to a comfortable service. First, you want to make sure the skin has been exfoliated and removed of all dead skin cells two days before your service. Also, hair is easily removed from hydrated skin oceanstylemagazine.com

than dry so drinking lots of water to hydrate from the inside out and applying a moisturizer to the area until the day before your service will make for a more comfortable experience. And choosing the right waxing center makes a difference. After the wax, the service provider should apply an individual cold pack to the skin to quickly close up the pores and reduce any possible redness, followed by a cooling cucumber gel to deeply hydrate the area. If your center doesn’t take those extra steps, find one that does. Do you prefer a certain kind of wax for sensitive skin? Elastic wax is great for all types of skin – but especially if the skin is sensitive. At Uni K, we only use elastic wax made of natural beeswax, essential oils and pine tree resin. Our wax is also gluten free. What about wax using strips v. pour-on wax? Wax strips and pour on wax are hard and synthetic waxes, both are harsh on the skin and are not the most effective. Elastic wax is all natural and is prepared for

Let’s say a woman visits a waxing salon and realizes too late that the wax the aesthetician was using was too hot. What should she use to soothe the burned area? In the future, she should visit a waxing center that applies wax at body temperature to avoid this occurrence again. But first, a cold compress will help reduce the swelling, while an all-natural aloe vera gel will have a soothing and cooling effect. What’s the most common mistake that women make in their post-waxing skincare routine? Forgetting to exfoliate and moisturize the area are two common mistakes. To prevent the growth of an ingrown hair, the area should be gently exfoliated to keep the pores clear – this should begin two days after your service. And applying a moisturizer and keeping the area hydrated will extend the life of your service and keep your skin soft. What product(s) do you find helps the most to prevent ingrown hairs? A great body scrub is essential to ward off ingrown hairs, but if you happen to get one – then I love Uni K’s Ingrown Hair Roll-On. It’s an exfoliating gel that is specifically formulated for the treatment of ingrown hair. Is there any advantage to using some of these special wax treatments like sugar or chocolate? Sugar wax is painful and tedious, while chocolate wax is just hard wax with synthetic chocolate flavor to make it different, but neither of those offer any advantage. Have you seen an increase in the number of men who request waxing services in the past few years? Definitely! Men’s grooming has been a growing trend over the past few years and we are seeing more and more men interested in waxing their backs, shoulders, eyebrows and bikini waxes. Speaking of men and since everyone is talking about the World Cup these days, is the Brazilian Wax still popular, or is there a pubic hair equivalent of the “hipster beard?” The Brazilian Wax is certainly as popular as ever among our customers. Now that it’s summer and we’re spending endless hours on the beach and outside, it’s not the time for women to go au naturale. Plus, once you’ve gotten used to a full Brazilian bikini, you never go back!

BRAZILIAN

INSPIRED

FITNESS

Soccer. Samba. Capoeira. Carnaval. These are all quintessentially Brazilian. But there is one more image that immediately conjures daydreams about South America’s largest country: exceptionally fit bodies on the beach. In particular, there is one, um, asset that Brazilians are praised for and that is their ridiculously toned and shapely bundas (Portuguese for “booty)”. The bottom line is, dental floss bikinis on Ipanema beach just aren’t as mesmerizing without the right of amount of lift, perk and curve that most Brazilians have been naturally blessed with. Great genes aside, they also spend a good deal of time kicking a ball around, dancing and practicing their native brand of martial arts, all of which also contribute to a remarkably well-shaped derriere. Luckily for you, a trip to the Southern Hemisphere isn’t necessary to achieve that coveted perfectly round bum. Try these samba, soccer and capoeira insired workouts and you’ll be fit to strut your stuff in your tiniest swimwear bottoms with the best of them. And as added bonus, these can be done in the privacy of your own home.

Samba If you love to dance, this is the workout for you. Carioca Choreographer Quenia Ribeiro has made quite a name for herself with her Samba fitness DVDs. Great for beginners, Quenia gives you a workout while teaching you a few dance steps that might come in handy on a night when you’ve had one too many caipirinhas. There are several variations, including a reggae/samba hybrid. The quick, arabesque footwork of Samba no pé (samba on the feet) does wonders to strengthen hip and thigh muscles, as well as building endurance. You’ll have a whole new appreciation for all those beautiful women at Carnaval who dance for hours in heels with a smile always plastered across their faces.

Soccer For our sporting enthusiasts, Cuerpaso combines common exercise techniques with the fancy-footed techniques of soccer and Latin Dance. Created by Tadeo Arnold, a celebrity fitness trainer, the word “cuerpaso” translates in Portuguese and Spanish to “great body” and that is precisely what he intends you to have after a few weeks of faithfully following his videos. The workout is fun and the exercise demo models are not precision perfect, so you won’t feel too bad if you can’t keep up in the beginning. And besides that, Tadeo claims that the Cuerpaso workout will cause you to sleep more soundly and have better sex. Sign us up!

Capoeira Ok, we’ll admit – the Brazil Butt Lift DVD won’t actually teach you capoeira, so if you are a martial arts devotee, and was hoping to learn this martial arts form developed centuries ago by enslaved Africans in Brazil, you might be disappointed. However, this workout craze, developed by native Brazilian and former dancer Leandro Carvalho, makes effective use of some of capoeira’s core techniques that sculpt, lift and define those heavenly glutes. Low squats, kicks and fluid movements send all the gluteal muscles into overdrive, and Carvalho delivers so much more in his workout. No wonder YouTube is littered with a million different versions of this amazing exercise routine! In case you’re looking for something a little more traditional, we suggest finding a class near you. We hear Crunch Fitness has a great one.

FENDI RESORT

By Nati Suisse Primal barbarism meshes with decadent sophistication. Palazzo and gutter fuse in one elusive but alluring package. Credit Rome, as anyone who’s seen The Great Beauty, winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, will recognize. “Fendi Roma,” read the new labels, as the business places a greater emphasis than ever on its roots. For the new Resort collection, Lagerfeld revisited a motif from 1988 and spread a little “Fendi Roma” graffiti around. It was the most visible expression of a hypersporty thread: cropped, rah-rah short, lean, piped, meshed. A bra and trackies combo was paired with a little white mink bomber, with sleeves in a mink mesh. A motocross jacket, banded in racing checks, topped a skirt in perforated black leather that was decorated with discs of orange shearling, like 3-D polka dots. It was a technological feat, for sure, but it was also as playful as a plushy.

years ago to fully appreciate the evolution. Back then, “capital L” luxury was queen. Now, nothing is sacred, and all the better for it. On Fendi’s Fall catwalk, the sprays of fresh orchids pinned to fur were a romantic, surprisingly soulful flourish. Here, the orchids came back as splintered, abstracted, exploded floral motifs, inlaid on fur, embroidered on a mohair tank, or as a ghostly print on pale pink silk organza. The abiding impression was urban energy—a lot of it. And yet the most striking piece in the collection was the quietest. A strappy shift in navy-trimmed black flared at the back into tiers of pleats. Yes, there was energy in their movement, but it was more the masterful construction that stood out. You might not look first at such an outfit, but you’d look longest. So you can add that dress to the list of Rome’s enduring fascinations.

That’s one of the most appealing things about Fendi. Its artisans are capable of ne plus ultra craftsmanship, but the hand is lighter than ever. Just look at Fendi twenty-five 18
