WHAT TO WEAR WHERE

ALL WHITE PARTY

Ladies and Gents, it’s about to be that time of year again. The countdown is on to the 2015 OCEAN Style Fashion Showcase Weekend. As we eagerly await this fun and fashion filled weekend in the sun, surf and sand, we can’t stop thinking about what we’re wearing to the Friday night AllWhite Party.

Yes, even though the namesake showcase event takes place on Saturday evening, the ultra-glam All-White party has become an epic sartorial event in its own right. You see, there is an undeniable appeal to an all-white affair that never gets old – partly because, like freshly fallen snow, optic white always looks so, well… new. Just as

the LBD has achieved classic status, a cool, crisp white outfit should always be a wardrobe mainstay. Here’s the catch though, while unblemished white is a vision of beauty to behold, it’s notoriously difficult to keep clean. Luckily, if you’re a shopaholic like me, it’s the perfect excuse to keep shopping!

THE LWD

ROMPERS/PLAYSUITS

Just like its famous black counterpart, the little white dress wins style points in spades. Lace embellishments and crochet knits were seen all over the fashion blogs this year, contrasted with a number of refined, more tailored offerings by designers with a minimalist chic aesthetic.

Although the name suggests something more casual, rompers and playsuits can take on a decidedly sophisticated look with the right fabric and cut. Here are two that I like, one is more structured, while the other evokes a bohemian feel, which has been a big summer trend that looks to stay hot through the fall.

JUMPSUITS

The more mature older sister of the romper, jumpsuits work well for those who are looking to accentuate one feature—a plunging neckline or a low cut back or even a striking silhouette—rather than show off a lot of skin.

Four points of advice on picking out your white outfit:

1 2

Wear flesh-toned undergarments. Many people mistakenly assume that white is the best choice.

3

We all love a bargain, but obviously cheap fabric and a poor fit are friends to NO ONE.

4

Stay away from anything too “bridal,” (unless, of course, Solange Knowles is your fashion muse).

THE WHITE MAXI DRESS Nothing says, “I’m a goddess come kneel at my feet,” like an ethereal, flowing white gown. Movement is key here and a carefully hidden side split (or two) is a nice touch, particularly when revealed as you float on by your humble admirers.

6 OCEAN Style

So in case you’re combing the department stores or browsing online for a show-stopping ensemble for this year’s party, check out some of my picks. You’ll be sure all eyes are on you.

Check for opacity in a range of lights. What looks opaque in regular light might look translucent or even practically transparent in the sunlight, or in our case, against the glare of a paparazzi’s flash. Make sure that your sheer look is deliberate or you may end up showing off more than you bargained for.

BLOODYGOODSTUFF ADIDAS KNIT THESE SNEAKERS ENTIRELY FROM OCEAN PLASTIC TRASH In a bid to end pollution of the world’s oceans, Adidas has partnered with Parley for the Oceans to create a prototype for a sustainable new shoe made almost entirely from recycled garbage and illegal gill nets pulled up from the ocean. “It’s a fishing net that was spanning the bottom of the sea like a wall, and killing pretty much every fish passing by,” says Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley for the Oceans. “They confiscated this net, and we’re bringing it back to life.” Collecting the plastic trash required to assemble the shoe proved to be an arduous task spanning the course of a 110 day expedition to track an illegal poaching vessel off the coast of West Africa. It is the green fishing nets collected during that voyage that can be seen reflected in the design of the shoe. In an additional effort to not only recycle ocean waste, but to help eliminate it, a chemist with Parley for the Oceans is making headway on a plastic alternative that should disintegrate if thrown out into nature. “That’s the ultimate vision, but it’s a moonshot,” he says. “Right now it’s far away. So we do what we can. That means we’re going out there and cleaning up as much as we can. Every piece of plastic that we collect, every single piece, can save a bird, a turtle, even a whale.”

Scot Sardinha is not a mathematician. He is a designer. His forms are elegant representations of innovative visions, born of a mind in continuous motion. A logical thinker, and one appreciative of nature’s creative genius, his art is inspired by natural shapes. Driftwood on the beach. Waves in the ocean. Spirals in seashells. Men of numbers and science have commented on Scot’s creative use of the golden ratio, a precise mathematical expression of measurement and repetition. Nature builds some of her finest creations with it, as evidenced in the chambered nautilus, the human ear, and the arrangement of pinecones, pineapple segments, or sunflower seed heads. Scot drew on nature’s handiwork, mimicking its design in his own. “Visual art must have a marriage with math to have something of interest to your audience. Math and art go hand in hand.”

capture a particularly engaging elegance of line, turning sketch to reality with exquisite workmanship and finishing with a sophisticated color palette. A youth spent in Caribbean waters, enjoying the lush landscapes and beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago, Scot’s vision is richly textured with the influences of the Windwards, conveying his

The Wave table

Scot comes by his creative genius naturally, his forms taking pleasant shapes that resonate deeply in a serendipitous relationship with nature’s mathematics. Not a math scholar early on, his respect for the concepts emerged over time in his 27 years working with light, elements, and different mediums.

love of the ocean. Summers in France added to Scot’s cosmopolitan stature, enhanced by a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts degree awarded by Morris Brown College, additional experience in New York City, and life along the California Coast, weaving a colorful tapestry of natural environments as reference.

With a portfolio engaging a range of media, Scot shows enviable talent spanning both two- and three-dimensional works. His furniture designs

Refining and uniting all these elements, as Scot begins work on a new piece he enters a space at play with logic, angles, and shapes, transferring his vision to plan. “Simplicity is the way of the elevated mind. The simpler a piece, the more impactful it is.” Deriving joy from all parts of the creative process, Scot proceeds slowly, looking for ways to innovate, employing his knack for seeing things differently. From concept to construction to finished piece, his reward is seeing ideas come to fruition, sometimes solo, sometimes alongside peers on team projects. Some designs are sparked in an instant. Others may take weeks of designing on paper to get it right. It’s all about working in harmony with the intended environment.

Superb pieces of Scot’s lines have found the enthusiastic embrace of celebrity, finding favor with Will & Jada Smith, Cedric & Lorna Kyles, Mark & Christine Lyn, and Queen Latifah, to name a few, in home and office environments. Collaborative efforts with Jaden Smith are in the works, while discussion with other distinguished creatives in different lanes of design, such as Jimmy Choo, link Scot to new projects. Currently designing for land-based residential and commercial lifestyles, it is certain Scot’s work would complement realms outside of his established domain. A suggestion that his style would mesh with sleek superyachts brings a smile. Pushed a bit further, his response to a possible approach to a yachting project prompted reflection. Growing up around boats, Scot admits he has always been fond of them. Imagining the opportunity to switch gears, designing for marine interiors, his vision is one that meshes indoor environments with outdoors, emphasizing waterlevel hydraulic doors that put guests at water’s edge, in a collection of functional spaces that are also beautiful. Intelligently and brilliantly designing for a lifestyle in tune with sea, sky, and sun, a Sardinha marine interior design is not outside the realm of possibility. “The toughest piece I’ve worked on? It’s whichever one I’m working through at the moment.” Passionate about each piece, centering on the work at hand makes it both the most challenging, and the most interesting in his portfolio. Upon completion of a new piece, Scot continues to push the envelope, looking ahead toward what is to come. As a stunning new line is about to emerge, he peers into the future, predicting interactive functionality of furniture design will involve technology and materials intended for more than one use. Certain to create mileposts by which others are judged, it will be both pleasure and privilege to follow his creative path.

THE INCOMPARABLE MISS KITTY 18 OCEAN Style

oceanstylemagazine.com

A universe in and of herself, Khadine ‘Miss Kitty’ Hylton exudes an incredibly potent energy unlike any other. Whether on camera or on air, on stage or behind the judges’ panel, Miss Kitty never disappoints, leaving viewers and listeners alike enthralled. Such is the mastery of her craft, that Miss Kitty has transformed herself into a full-fledged brand and leader of the pack. OCEAN Splash talks to Miss Kitty, media personality, entertainer and author, about her passions and that which drives her. See excerpts of our conversation below and pick up your copy of OCEAN Style magazine for the full-length feature and more about this amazing powerhouse! OCEAN Splash: Walk us a little bit through the evolution of your career, how did you get to where you are, today? Miss Kitty: Well, I got to where I’m at, right now, just through being driven, being determined, being very diligent and hardworking. I speak what’s on my mind; of course, being very tactful and doing everything in a capsule of decency, but still being truthful to myself. I have made a lot of sacrifices, because I love what I do. I’m a professional at what I do and I try, at oceanstylemagazine.com

all times, to be my best. I don’t always get it right, because I’m a human being and I do make mistakes, but I try as best as I can to take my work and to take my job seriously. And I’m always looking to expand, always looking to grow, always wanting more; never getting complacent, but always looking for what’s next. OSP: Where is your favorite place in the world to relax? And how do you unwind when you’re there? MK: Oh, wow. My favorite place in the world to relax is my room. It’s very quiet. Wherever there solitude and quiet, I really like that. Truly, I’m a bit of a paradox, in terms of, when Miss Kitty is out and working, I’m vivacious and colorful and interactive and entertaining. But I also treasure just quiet time: quiet time to think, quiet time to reflect, quiet time to have some introspection and quiet time to dream. OSP: Describe yourself in three words.

OSP: What advice would you give to someone who looked at Miss Kitty and said, “I want to be that. I want to be popular, I want to be famous and I want to be successful”? How would you guide them? MK: I would say, first of all, you can’t come into this business and hustle, because if you don’t have the true passion and you don’t have that discipline and the stick-to-itiveness, you’re going to fizzle, really quickly. The lights are just one aspect of what Miss Kitty is and what my life is about. There is a lot of work that goes on, behind the scenes that you have to be willing to put it in and have the mental, the physical and spiritual fortitude, to be able to stand up because, sometimes, being in the light gets lonely. You have so many people around you and yet, you feel so alone sometimes. You trust no one, because some people come into your life; they’re just curious, they don’t really care. And so, it’s a mental struggle, sometimes, to go, “Okay, who do I confide in? Who do I have as my confidant?

MK: Passionate and diligently ambitious. The three words are passionate, diligent, ambitious.

INTERVIEW WITH:

CHEF COLLIN BROWN OCEAN Splash talks to Collin Brown, renowned chef and restaurateur, about his culinary creations and source of inspiration. Pick up your copy of OCEAN Style magazine for the full-length feature and more about this amazing chef. Where did you grow up? Tell us about your background. I grew up in a very small town of farmers known as Ulster Spring in the parish of Trelawney. We are farmers first so being a chef is the easiest thing because of my understanding of food. How did that influence your career as a chef? Growing up in a community where everything is so simple, that is my strength, you never have anyone you want to impress because we are all on the same level so instead, you respect each other and just try to be the best you can be, applying your best today and trying to make your best better tomorrow. What is the most challenging dish for you to prepare? Being a self taught Chef, you don’t see things as challenge, you set yourself up to fail with the word CHALLENGE. I see what I do as creation and refining, but the meal that does it for me is the Jamaican beef wellington. The pastry I used is the Jamaican Patty pastry and the stuffing is a

mixture of mushroom, beetroot and callaloo and that is served with broccoli, carrot and red beet puree. Which big city is your culinary favorite? London for sure because that’s where I got my big break and won all my awards.

What is the best thing about being a chef in the Caribbean? We are just spoiled with the most rich, healthy, unique, exotically scrumptious ingredients, everything is just divine, this makes cooking simpler, and you just need to know how to balance flavors.

What is your signature dish? My Signature dish would be my chicken roulade. I have had customers send it back to the kitchen because they think its not chicken so its my pleasure to go and explain how I got it like that. If you had to sum up your culinary career thus far with a music title, what would it be? Artist, SIZZLA; track, RISE TO THE OCCASION.

The picturesque Islands of the Bahamas played host to an unforgettable four day weekend as Dan Marino, The Miami Dolphins and 14 alumni members treated guests to breathtaking views and the opportunity to mingle with their football heroes. Nothing short of grand, the second annual event included packages allowing access to a welcome party, a golf tournament with the various football legends, a sunset cruise, Dolphins Academy Youth Football and Cheerleader Clinic at the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium and an introductory flag football match between the Miami Dolphins alumni and The Bahamas’ very own All Star team. Clad in their signature colours, The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders greeted arriving guests to the island with a flurry of aqua and orange pompoms, paving the way for the Dolphins Welcome Reception, complimented by the melodious sounds of a Bahamian steel pan band.

While young girls learned the signature sashays and chants from the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders, over 300 Bahamian children gathered at the national stadium to learn football skills direct from the Dolphin legends. With twelve stations set up along the field to teach the basics of the game, participating youth were given the chance to put their own skills on display while learning new tricks. In addressing the talent found amongst the participating youth, Marino said at the event that “there’s a lot of real athletic kids and you can tell that they’re excited about being out here, being part of it… you can tell some kids have a lot of talent, for sure.” Complimentary to Marino’s observation, The Islands of the Bahamas Minister of Tourism, The Honorable Obediah Wilchcombe elaborated on the long term gains of the weekend, saying. “Some caught a pass from Dan Marino, one of the greatest ever. I’m sure that will inspire them to think about their lives and what they’re going to do in the future. Some will have athletic careers, but many will now focus on their academics and recognize those facts that if they work harder, opportunities are there for them.”

Former Miami Dolphin Linebacker Twan Russell, who led the charge in the Youth Clinic, said the participants can expect years of football experience at their fingertips. “We are excited to return to see if the kids retained what we taught them. Who knows? We might be building the next football star coming out of here. But at the end of the day it is about giving a positive message.” That positive message could not have been delivered on better ground; wrapped up in the flavour and charm of one of the most exotic, diverse and multi-cultural destinations in the world. Known for its friendly people, climate, crystal clear waters and sugar soft sand beaches, The Bahamas proves itself to be the ideal destination for a relaxing getaway and now, through their continued efforts, ultimate sporting experiences.

upon entering the Rose Hall Estate, the journey up to the White Witch Club House is an impressive one, a winding road climbing higher and higher still, leading guests to the memorable vision of a venue washed in tones of red and orange, an early indication of the revelry in store as Vivica A. Fox celebrated her birthday in Jamaica’s second city. Montego Bay played host to the American actress and producer, with a private cocktail reception for the Kill Bill star who landed on Thursday, July 30th at the All Inclusive Hyatt Ziva at Rose Hall. The intimate affair which provided Vivica the opportunity to celebrate with her family and friends was thoroughly enjoyed by all as the event which was slated to end at 9pm did not conclude until minutes to 11pm. Dancing up a storm, Vivica and guests cha-cha’d their way pass the sushi bar, carving station and sinful amounts of cake which fueled their moves for the night. “Waking up in paradise in Montego Bay Jamaica is priceless!” exclaimed Fox who was flanked by her ultra glamorous entourage on the second night of her trip. The Tavern at White Witch came alive as guests made their way inside for an indulgent dinner featuring a six course meal accompanied by the vocal talents of singers Dwane Antonio and A’lisa.

The culinary expertise of internationally acclaimed Chef Collin Brown stood at the helm of the night’s offerings, commenting “we are just spoiled with the most rich, healthy, unique, exotically scrumptious ingredients, everything is just divine, this makes cooking simpler, and you just need to know how to balance flavors.” Chef Brown raised intrigue early on with the presentation of his first dish, sweet potato vichyssoise, a soup traditionally served cold. A surprising effect was had on Jamaican palettes accustomed to warmer varieties and raised anticipations met with a whimsical spin on traditional fare. Dishes such as Petit Jamaican Jerk Beef Wellington and Chicken Roulade, a dish infused with susumber and annatto coconut rundown topped with Dom Perignon Champagne were accompanied by lighter servings of Salmon Ceviche and Corn Brulee served with fruit tartlets. An appearance by Miss Kitty to dine and celebrate with Vivica resulted in glasses being raised in response to accolades made by the Jamaican personality to Fox, the night’s celebrant. Sparkling champagne and the presentation of a Forever Sweets signature cake by local fashion designer, Neahlis, marked the end of an enchanting meal as impeccably dressed servers who ensured that glasses remained full and plates replenished, cleared the final round of plates as good food made way for an even grander time at Fox’s exclusive after party at the White Witch Club House. Vivica A. Fox got up and got down to the night’s musical stylings by Elite Media Concepts, showing off her dance moves with guests !” Jamaican classics such as Buju Banton’s Bogle and Shabba Rank’s Trailor Load permeated the air. Limbo bars and congo lines kept guests on their feet as the celebratory mood bubbled through Vivica as more guests made their way to the dance floor, including Miss Kitty who later remarked “I had a blast dancing the night away with this simply amazing woman!” OCEAN Style Travel, an extension of OCEAN Style, offers you curated vacation experiences through knowledge, experience and a shared passion for the Caribbean. This unique opportunity to celebrate with Vivica A. Fox and her closest family and friends in Jamaica was part of a special OCEAN Style Travel weekend package tailored to meet the needs of clients and guests.
