About Ocean Institute Using the ocean as our classroom, we inspire children to learn

Founded in 1977, Ocean Institute is an ocean science, maritime history and experiential education 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Our waterfront campus is adjacent to a State Marine Conservation Area and encompasses exhibits, science labs and a live collection of 1,100 species native to the California Pacific Coast. Ocean Institute is also home to the Spirit of Dana Point, an iconic tall ship that we use to educate students on California’s rich maritime history.

At Ocean Institute, we use the ocean as our classroom to inspire learning in all ages.

About Sponsoring Events The events we throw fuel the mission-fulfilling programs that result in impact!

Proceeds from our events will go to support Ocean Institute programming for students of all ages. At Ocean Institute, we provide a plethora of experiential learning opportunities both in and outside of a class or classroom setting. Major Fundraisers These are the stand-out events each year that serve as the main fundraisers for Ocean Institute operations and programming.

Elevated and Educational Public Offerings Not as large as our major fundraisers, but function as elevated public experiences to increase guest traffic and promote Ocean Institute memberships.

Teen Programming These events are the teen conferences that occur each year. This includes Girls in Ocean Science, Stoked on Science, and the Marine & Environmental Science Virtual College Fair

Engaging Online Campaigns Our online campaigns usually surround a specific need. Our main online campaign is the SEAson of Giving, which serves as our End-of-Year Fundraising Campaign.

A Speakeasy Circus

Pirate and Mermaid Ball

This annual fundraising gala features a gourmet sit down dinner, silent and live auction, paddle raise, and is a night of glitz and glamour filled with live music and a speakeasy by the sea!

This masquerade soirée is hosted during our annual Maritime Festival and features live music by our infamous sea shanty singing pirates and live band, a silent auction, pirate and mermaid themed attire and lots of spirits and libations.

Maritime Festival In celebration of California’s rich maritime history, Ocean Institute annually hosts a fleet of historic tall ships that sail into Dana Point Harbor in September. History comes alive throughout the weekend long event from ship tours to mermaid encounters, and so much more!

Girls in Ocean Science

Internship Program

The Girls in Ocean Science Conference connects influential female scientists with the next generation of ocean ambassadors.

Scientists will conduct hands-on workshops that will communicate the success and excitement available to women who pursue science as a career.

Stan Cumming Scholars High School Internship Program helps our youth gain hands on experience and a deep connection to Marine Science or Maritime History. from Fall through Spring, interns will gain hands-on experience diving into the department of their choice.

Stoked on Science Stoked on Science, Ocean Institute's Teen Conference, introduces middle and high school students to various ocean-related careers, with professionals from board shapers to oceanographers sharing their experiences, inspiring over 200 students to turn their passions into career paths

Whale & Marine Life Tour

Spirit of Dana Point Set sail aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point and experience California from the perspective of an early tallship explorer. Join the crew to help raise sail, handle lines, and steer the ship, or simply sit back, relax and enjoy the majesty of sailing the seas aboard a tallship.

Your 2-1/2-hour adventure aboard the RV Sea Explorer, Ocean Institute’s 65’ research vessel, takes you miles beyond the Dana Point Harbor jetty in search of marine mammals such as migrating blue whales; large schools of playful Dolphin; the impressive sunfish known as Mola; and sleek harbor seals and sea lions.
