Nicholas Noshes A kid’s culinary adventure at Amelia’s by Eat. Headliners

Welcome

to my first official restaurant review!

I was invited to the Friends and Family night at Amelia’s by Eat, a new restaurant in McCormick Ranch. The owner, Stacy Weber, is our friend, and it was so sweet of her to let us have one of the first experiences dining at her restaurant.

Amelia’s is very modern and cool inside, but also super family-friendly. It’s decorated with cacti at each table. There’s a big bar in the middle and tons of seating space for diners.

One of my brothers ordered tomato soup to accompany his grilled cheese for his main dish, proclaiming it was the best soup ever.

My parents ordered a slider board of salmon and tri-tip, sharing that it was delicious.

When you’re done with dinner, I highly recommend dessert. Kids get a free baked good with their meal (I had a chocolate chip cookie). Or you can order off the dessert menu—I suggest the brownie sundae.

My brothers and I kicked things off with special slushie drinks. They were so good!

I chose a kid’s meal, which let me pick three items from several kid-friendly options. My choice? A grilled cheese, Caesar salad, and the “Jack” pretzels. Fun fact: the soft pretzels are named after Stacy’s son Jack, who goes to my school.

Stacy says all the food they serve is made fresh and with healthy ingredients. With a big background in cooking and catering—having worked with celebrities and athletes such as the Cardinals—she's no stranger to creating tasty dishes.

According to Stacy, opening a restaurant and running a successful catering business takes a lot of work and long hours. However, it’s her passion to create yummy meals while keeping health in mind that drives her.

Now that it’s getting nicer outside, you’ll love sitting on Amelia’s patio. Or if you want a quick bite, you can pick up ready-made meals.

Amelia’s by Eat is located at 8240 E. Hayden Rd., in Scottsdale, and is open seven days a week. For more information, visit ameliasaz.com.

Paradise Valley Brothers Tackle Carpool Chaos with Innovative App Headliners

Paradise Valley brothers, Ishan and Sahil Bagai, set out to address a challenge faced by families: the logistical nightmare of ferrying kids to school and activities. Their brainchild, LetsRideKids, an app-based carpooling platform launched in 2022, offers a solution to this modern-day puzzle.

Ishan, a student at Brophy Preparatory High School in Phoenix and an environmental sciences and robotics enthusiast, recently was one of five recipients of the Nobel Good Earth Sustainability Scholarship, presented by the National Society of High School Scholars for his work. This award spotlights young individuals who advocate for conservation, sustainability, and the preservation of Earth.

Joining forces with his younger brother Sahil, a student at Basis Scottsdale, their combined experiences, which ranged from participating in science competitions to leading 3D printing clubs at school, fueled their determination to bring their idea to life.

LetsRideKids stands out because it's not just about sharing rides; it's about fostering community ties and promoting sustainability. The premise is simple: drivers list rides with available seats, and passengers can search for drivers headed in the same direction. This arrangement ensures that kids travel with familiar faces from school or neighborhood activities, creating a safer environment and fostering long-lasting relationships.

The brothers recalled an instance

when, after being ferried around town by their parents for various activities, they noticed their peers heading to the same destinations in separate cars. This realization birthed LetsRideKids, aiming to pool resources for a greener, more efficient solution.

Beyond convenience, safety is paramount. The app boasts many safety features, such as driver's license and identity verification, live geo-tracking during rides, and an in-app chat and calling system. Furthermore, users can rate drivers and passengers, ensuring transparency and trustworthiness.

Ishan and Sahil's commitment extends beyond the virtual realm. They believe that by reducing individual car journeys, they can foster closer community bonds and contribute to a sustainable future.

Although the Bagai brothers had the vision and design for the app, they relied on freelance developers to bring their creation to life. Launched earlier this year, LetsRideKids, accompanied by its supportive website, seeks to revolutionize the way parents and communities think about daily commutes.

The free app is currently available on the App Store and Google Play. For more information, visit letsridekids.com.

Barry Goldwater Student Earns Spot in Prestigious Bezos Scholars Program

Adistinctionhas been bestowed upon Barry Goldwater High School's senior Brendan Salisbury. He stands as the only student from Arizona chosen as a 2023 Bezos Scholar, marking only the second time a student from the state has been selected in the program's history.

This elite recognition is only given to 12 students across the United States, and Brendan will be joining the ranks alongside his nominated supporting educator, Victoria E. Muñoz.

The Bezos Scholars Program (BSP), founded in 2005 by Jackie and Mike Bezos, is not just another student accolade. It offers a year-long leadership development program, providing students the resources and training to implement projects that stimulate positive change in their communities.

Brendan's inclusion in this elite cohort resonates with his fervor for community engagement, especially in the realm of mental health. He has expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges of teenage mental health and his visionary approach to establish wellness

centers across all Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) high school campuses. This passion does not end there. Brendan envisions a nationwide initiative: a joint foundation between state hospitals and their respective neurological institutes, designed to foster research and holistic treatment centers for those with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

On his selection, Brendan comments, “I am ecstatic to not only make an impact on my community but take part in an international effort to improve our world. I cannot wait to see what scholars are able to accomplish this coming year.”

The multifaceted senior is not just confined to academia and advocacy. Brendan's interests sprawl across a gamut of activities. Whether it's hip-hop dancing, horse riding, or being a part of Arizona's All-State Show Choir, Brendan exemplifies versatility.

Fluent in Spanish, he celebrates the multicultural upbringing he's been privileged with.

Victoria E. Muñoz, known as Vicky, will guide Brendan through the BSP journey. An IB Spanish teacher and World Languages Department Chair at Barry Goldwater High

“I am ecstatic to not only make an impact on my community but take part in an international effort to improve our world. I cannot wait to see what scholars are able to accomplish this coming year.”

– Brendan Salisbury

School, her story began in El Salvador, migrating to the U.S. at 14. Her passion for global cultures resonates in her teaching methods, and her commitment to the environment is evident as the EcoSquad sponsor at her school.

The Bezos Scholars Program experience begins with virtual community-building exercises, followed by an all-expenses-paid trip to the Aspen Ideas Festival. Here, students undergo rigorous leadership training, panel discussions, and engage in conversations with acclaimed global leaders. Following this inten-

sive experience, scholars are tasked with launching sustainable community projects, transforming their communities one step at a time. These projects, unique to each scholar's passion and community's need, span a range of issues. From the climate crisis, gender and education equality to financial literacy, these initiatives have been addressing some of the most pressing concerns of our time. Since its inception, nearly 200 projects have been greenlit, thanks to the BSP.

In the upcoming spring, Brendan's accomplishments will lead him to the White House, where he'll be meeting President Biden and Vice President Harris to discuss his trailblazing project on mental health.

For those eager to track the success and journey of Brendan and other Bezos Scholars, the Bezos Scholars Program remains a testament to the belief that young minds can, and will, shape the future. For more information, visit bezosscholars.org.

MAKING WAVES

How Kylie Luczywko swam from learning a life skill to chasing an Olympic dream. Headliners

Photos courtesy of the Luczywko family

Anecessaryskill turned ambitious dream, fifth-grader Kylie Luczywko of Anthem has evolved from a practical swimmer to aspiring champion. Initiated into swimming at a mere 6 months old for safe family adventures at their lake property in Central Wisconsin, she now ranks among the nation's top 8% of swimmers in several events.

Although Kylie dabbled in various sports as a young child, swimming was the standout – the one that never elicited complaints. By age 6, she joined Swim Neptune in a pre-competition league, escalating to competitive swimming by age 8.

The drive to push her boundaries, securing first place, entering high-level

meets, and achieving her season-start personal goals keeps Kylie motivated and thrilled. This season, she’s eyeing statequalifying times in the 11-12 age group, aspiring to compete at the Arizona Age Group State Championship in March 2024 in Oro Valley, and hoping to qualify for the 2024 Southwestern Age Group Regionals—having missed last year’s qualification in the 50-yard Butterfly by a mere 0.01 seconds.

While extensive pool time could potentially derail schoolwork, ASU Prep Digital, discovered by Kylie’s family a few years ago through neighborhood friends, proves an adept solution. The virtual school not only quenches Kylie's knowledge thirst but also provides vital scheduling flexibility for her swim practices and meets.

"For our family, it is the best of both worlds," says Adriane Luczywko, Kylie’s mom. "The staff, the ease of fitting school into her training, and the amazing academics all make it a great fit for us."

In the coming year, Kylie intends to apply to Khan World School, a specialized program within ASU Prep Digital designed for academically driven kids. Peering further into the future, she harbors lofty goals: swimming in college, preferably for an NCAA Division One school, and pursuing professional swimming—with the Olympics firmly in her sights and heart.

Explore how ASU Prep Digital facilitates students like Kylie in navigating their passions alongside academics at asuprepdigital.org.

Serving up Opportunities

Teenage quartet breaks the net, making tennis

Juniorsat Brophy College Prep—Logan Phillips, Arin Gopakumar, Ryan Zerbib, and Naren Gudavalli—have not only been acing tennis courts for approximately seven years but also acing community service with their nonprofit organization, Overhead Opportunities, founded about a year and a half ago. Their mission is to make tennis available to everybody!

With personal understanding of the high expenses involved in tennis lessons and equipment, they aimed to serve prospective tennis players who found these costs prohibitive. The boys garnered support from several organizations, including The Loyola Academy, Xavier College Prep, the Challenge Foundation, and USTA Southwest, and secured a $1,000 grant from USTA for equipment.

Currently, their goals are to expand throughout Arizona and to new states, including California, Texas, and New York. Additionally, when they go to college, they hope to start a few subchapters specific to the area that they are in. Even though all of the co-founders work together to make Overhead Opportunities possible, they each

have important jobs within the organization.

Logan is the CEO, and he oversees the organization to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Naren is the CAO, and he supervises all of the clinics, monitoring who will be attending and the volunteer coaches. Arin is the COO, and he handles reaching out to other organizations and schools to help Overhead Opportunities grow. Ryan is the CFO, and he manages all of the finances, including applying for grants and creating a GoFundMe.

YOUTH CLINICS SERVING UP SKILLS AND FUN

Held most Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Xavier College Prep—who kindly donated their courts—these clinics run for most of the year, excluding summer, and welcome players for single or multiple sessions. Registration and coaching application forms are available on their website: overheadopportunities.org. If you have had some tennis experience before and want to help out with coaching, you can submit a form, also available through their website.

The teenagers love tennis because it is a fast-paced sport, and if you win a match, it feels good because you know it is due to the effort that you put into it. They wanted to share this love of tennis with others.

Throughout their time coaching, the co-founders have developed several favorite memories.

MAKING AN IMPACT

One day, an email from the Challenge Foundation reported kids trying to play tennis during recess. This, alongside other cherished memories like a rewarding Halloween event and securing weekly court time at a private facility through Xavier, affirmed the tangible impact of their initiative.

LEND A HAND

Support their mission by donating to their GoFundMe, enabling them to purchase more equipment for their students, at gofundme.com/f/ overhead-opportunities.

In their journey, these young men learned the power of perseverance and witnessed the profound impact of their efforts on others’ lives. Their advice to other young changemakers: Put yourself out there. Numerous people would love to assist you, and relentless pursuit can lead you to unimaginable heights.

Naya Seth, 13 years old, loves to read and write. She is a member of National Junior Honor Society and National Charity League and enjoys participating in various philanthropy activities.

“How does ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ pest control work?”

The answer is simple, nature has been doing “organic pest control” for literally millions of years through predatory animals and insects, repellent plant life and through natural minerals and oils that bugs and other pests do not like. We use many of these methods in our service, as it is not necessary to use potentially harmful materials to take care of a problem easily solved by natural materials. Some of our products are literally food grade and could be consumed without consequence. Other products are so much safer than

SMALL HERO, BIG HEART

In North Phoenix, a young boy named Carter Cunnius is turning his past challenges into a mission of joy for other kids. This 8-year-old, with twinkling eyes and an unstoppable spirit, is the mastermind behind a heartwarming toy drive that is making waves in the community and brightening the days of children at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Carter's journey began in a way none of us would want. When he was only 4 years old, his doctors shared the news that he had a type of cancer known as leukemia. His days became filled with hospital visits, treatments, and many moments that required extraordinary bravery. After a challenging battle of two and a half years, Carter triumphantly emerged, being declared cancer-free one year ago. However, his experience in the hospital wasn’t forgotten. During one particularly tough week, when an infection kept him bedridden, Carter experienced the boredom and sadness that can come with long hospital stays. A small box of LEGOs, which became a source of creativity and escape, sparked an idea in his thoughtful mind.

“My mom and I built it and took it apart so many times. I was so sad, and my mom kept making up games for us to play.  I still had a lot of unopened gifts at home and told my mom that I wanted to donate them so no kid would feel the way I did during that week,” says Carter.

That memory led to the birth of Carter’s toy drive, which kicked off in September 2020. With an objective to ensure no child felt the loneliness and boredom he once did, Carter, along with the support of his community, started collecting toys. His endeavor began to fill trucks and cars with toys destined for children in the hospital.

Carter, now a third grader at Deer Valley Unified School District’s (DVUSD) Norterra Canyon School, is inspiring not just adults, but his class-

mates too. Together, they've been gathering toys by the hundreds, establishing a tower that symbolizes hope, kindness, and youthful solidarity. This year marks the third of Carter’s initiative, and it’s not just about collecting toys, but also about remembering and honoring friends made along the way. Last year’s drive paid tribute to a young friend, Junior, who sadly lost his fight with cancer.

In Carter’s words, the best part about organizing the toy drive each year is “knowing kids will feel loved and it will take their mind off of what they’re going through.” And his top pick for a universal toy? LEGOs, as he believes “everyone loves LEGOs!”

His mom, Marie Cunnius, stands proudly by his side, her perspective on life profoundly altered by their journey. She emphasizes the importance of valuing what truly matters in life and encourages others to always accept help when it is genuinely offered. Marie believes that no family should navigate the challenging journey of childhood cancer alone.

Readers, if Carter's story inspires you, there's a way for you to be part of this inspiring initiative! Carter’s cause will be back in action next September during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, inviting everyone to participate through Norterra Canyon School or DVUSD.

Young Carter, despite his experiences, turned pain into purpose and is a living testament to how acts of kindness, big or small, can radiate through a community, lifting spirits and making a real difference. His story reminds us all that no matter how tough the journey, there's always a way to bring a little sunshine into the lives of others.

Remember, even the smallest hands can move mountains and the youngest hearts can show immense kindness. Kudos to Carter and every young person out there making a difference, one small act of kindness at a time.

At 4 years old, Carter was diAgnosed with a canCer known as leukemiA.

Career Day

CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR

Lin Hawthorne writes and publishes picture books.

Lin Hawthorne

Profession: Children's Book

Author and Independent Publisher Age: 45

What do you do for a living?

I write children's picture books! I publish them myself under my company name 3+1 Publishing. Basically, (book) publishing is the business of making and selling books. From writing, editing, and illustrating to then getting books on the shelves of libraries and bookstores, I enjoy using books to tell my own stories and help others tell theirs. We make memories and open up new worlds reading picture books. One of my favorites is “Put Me in the Zoo” by Robert Lopshire. It brings up feelings of pure delight! What type of training do you need to do your job? A few things prepared me for this job. First, I read A LOT (when I was a child). It helped me immerse myself in the art of storytelling, whether I knew it or not. And reading many different authors gave

me a perspective on how other people write. Second, I practice writing. Almost daily (if I can). It doesn't have to be super serious. It can be light and funny! I write stories about my kids and family and my perspective on life. Writing helps me practice my own individual writing style. Lots of people can write, but there is only one me! Third, I have a degree in a field called “graphic design.” A graphic designer creates art for companies that can go on the web or get printed in brochures. I spent many years learning about how to create art that appeals to people. I use these skills now to give our illustrators art direction, design our books, and manage the printing process. Lastly, I laugh. A lot. At the end of the day, I'm just a mom who loves to laugh with her kids and I know if my books can make my own kids laugh, I've done a good job. What’s your favorite part of your job?

When someone reads one of my stories or one of my author's stories and says, “We enjoyed this book because...” What a powerful way to connect with another person––through books and shared experiences. Relationships are what drive me. Getting to interact with my authors, illustrators, and my marketing team on a daily basis creates joy and motivation to keep going and writing the next book, and the next! There isn't anything better than having the shared experience of creating “something” from

“nothing.” I get to do all of my work from home and so my kids get to see me start each new project and I sometimes ask for their input. Sharing my work with my family is good for them and me and fuels my creativity, drive, and focus. What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I'm not sure I had a specific job in mind, but one thing I knew deep in my heart; I LOVED ART AND BOOKS. In the summers I read constantly. And when I wasn't reading, I was drawing, painting, and inventing new, messy projects. Cleaning up was my least favorite part. It was clear I was on a path headed for the arts in some form or fashion.

What advice would you give to a kid who wants to have a similar career?

Go find a book. And then another. And read through the bookshelves of your library. And when you run out

of books at the library, go to another library. You get the point! Take art classes. Do art because it's fun and it's an expression of you. Write. For no one but yourself. Enjoy putting words on paper (or type on a computer). Whether you decide to become an artist or a writer is less important. Doing art and reading will make you a more interesting person. A person who feels for others. One fun fact NOT about your job?

I love dogs, but I never had one growing up. I really wanted one. And the same thing could be said for my husband. So, when we got married, we said, “We're getting a dog!” And in the space of 12 years, we raised and trained three dogs. And now, in all my stories so far, I've included a dog in some way. We've since said goodbye to all three and my kids are now begging for another puppy!

ANTI-GRAVITY GYROS

Gravity got you down? Explore ways to overcome it by building and testing an antigravity device. Earth’s gravity is what keeps us on the ground and what causes objects to fall. Inertia, or Newton’s First Law of Motion, states that objects at rest tend to stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion (unless acted on by an outside force).

Centripetal forces are any forces (gravitational, electrical/atomic, or tension) that move inward, toward the fixed center of the circular motion. In this activity, the string attached to the cup creates a centripetal force and when the circular motion of the cup moves

faster than the horizontal motion (inertia) of the water/objects. As a result, the water/objects stay in the cup.

SUPPLIES

• A 9 oz. paper or plastic cup

• One (1) sharpened pencil

• One to five (1-5) pennies or marbles

• Water

• Two 2-ft. long pieces of string

HOW TO

1. Using the pencil, punch one hole in the cup ½ inch below the rim.

2. Punch a second hole on the opposite side of the cup ½ inch below the rim.

3. Thread one piece of string through each hole and tie them off.

4. Place pennies, marbles, or water in the cup.

5. Investigate how you can prevent the materials from falling out of the cup when upside down.

Repeat steps four through five with pennies, marbles, and water.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

1. What direction does gravity point?

2. What is inertia?

3. What things resist the force of gravity by moving in the opposite direction?

4. How can you prevent gravity from making the water spill out of the cup when it is turned upside down without placing your hand over the top of the cup?

5. When you tested your antigravity device, what was it that prevented the penny, marble, or water from spilling out?

You can learn a bunch more about gravity and more when you visit the Arizona Science Center. Be sure to stop by the Dorrance Planetarium and Forces of Nature! Visit azscience. org for more information!

THE WILD”

GENRE: Middle-grade fantasy

AGES: 11+

RATING: AAAAA

SYNOPSIS: Eighteen-year-old Rasmira has been meticulously trained all her life to become a warrior and eventually lead her village, as she is her father’s chosen heir. However, when her critical coming-of-age trial is cunningly sabotaged, resulting in her failure, Rasmira faces her father’s wrath and is exiled to a wilderness teeming with monsters. Presented with a seemingly insurmountable quest, she must regain her honor by vanquishing the oppressive god who demands yearly tribute from the villages or perish in the attempt.

MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM THIS BOOK IS: "True strength comes from being willing to fail in order to progress."

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS: The evolution of Rasmira’s character stands out brilliantly in the narrative. While she embarks on a daunting physical journey, her personal development is both harrowing and universally relatable, striking a chord with a broad reader base.

MY FAVORITE CHARACTER IN THIS BOOK IS: The characters Rasmira and Iric are particularly delightful. Despite their contrasting personalities, they complement each other splendidly, weaving a tale that is not only entertaining but also enchanting.

AGES: 5 - 8

SYNOPSIS: Have you ever wondered why jellyfish sting? Or if trees communicate with one another? How about why you can’t tickle yourself? Well, scientists have got the answers to those questions! Keep reading and you can be a scientist too. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK: It offers a lot of information about plants, animals, humans, etc. The fun illustrations of people with speech bubbles really give the book a spark of humor, which doesn’t make the book boring for kids.

“ARBORAMA”

AUTHOR: Lisa Voisard

GENRE: Non-fiction

AGES: 10 - 12

SYNOPSIS: This book is about a marvelous world of trees. It answers questions about trees, including reproduction habitat, lifespan, height, leaves, and more.
