KTR Makes a Splash With Its New Cannon Beach Action Sports Center!

A Bigger Playground for Active Kids

K

TR, a popular indoor action-sports company in Arizona, has opened a brand-new facility at Cannon Beach in Mesa. KTR is known for exciting activities like skateboarding, parkour, gymnastics, ninja courses, and more—all designed with kids in mind.

This new location joins other KTR centers in Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale, making it easier than ever for families to find a place to play, learn, and stay active.

The Cannon Beach area is a huge 37-acre entertainment district with shops, restaurants, and even a giant man-made surf lagoon. KTR is the main indoor recreation spot in this fun-filled neighborhood.

From “Kids That Rip” to Today KTR began more than 15 years ago in Mesa under the name Kids That Rip. The first center quickly became famous for helping young skateboarders train like pros while still welcoming beginners.

The same owners who run the Scottsdale location now guide the Mesa and Cannon Beach centers too. Their goal has stayed the same: keep things safe, familyfriendly, and full of chances to learn new skills—especially important during hot Arizona summers.

KTR Scottsdale became a model for the company. It has trampolines, ninja and parkour zones, sport courts, a Sky Bridge,

and a skatepark for skateboards, scooters, and BMX riders. Many parents love that KTR offers both classes and open play, giving kids structure and freedom.

The new Cannon Beach site uses this successful design but adds bigger play zones, updated equipment, and a beachstyle look to match its surroundings.

SPORTS WITH ZAZA: 1:1 with Eddie House

H

i, I’m Zaza, and I got to cover The Straight Game podcast live show in Phoenix! The podcast has three hosts who are all basketball legends with ties to Arizona. One of them is Eddie House—an incredible NBA shooter and Arizona State legend. He even won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008, and now he talks about basketball on TV because he knows the game so well.

Zaza: You played for ASU and dropped 61 points in a game.

Insane. How did that feel?

EH: “That’s the game that got me drafted, to be honest with you. And I never liked Cal because they didn’t give me a letter.”

Zaza: Favorite career highlight?

EH: “The championship on the Boston Celtics… it was like a one-off. I never had another opportunity to win one.”

Zaza: What’s your favorite memory with the Suns?

EH: “Besides winning the championship with the Celtics, the Suns were the most fun I ever had with a team. Everybody was cool with each other. Just being around those guys and sharing that season was one of my favorite experiences ever.”

Zaza: I’m 10. When you were 10, what did you want to be when you grew up?

EH: “I thought I was going to be Rickey Henderson, a baseball player. I played left field and pitched. But then my father told me, ‘We don’t have money for college, you’ll need a scholarship.’ The easiest path was basketball, because I could work on my game alone. Baseball needs other people, but basketball… you can go to the park, imagine whatever you want, and just work. That’s why I switched.”

Zaza: How about the podcast?

EH: “We’re able to share knowledge, swap stories, and have fun. I love doing it, and love the guys.”

Inspiration From Around the World: The Youngest Chess Star Ever!

omething amazing happened this month! A little boy from India named Sarwagya Singh Kushwah became the youngest chess player in the world to earn a FIDE rating—and he’s only three years old.

Most kids his age are just learning letters and shapes, but Sarwagya is already playing in real chess tournaments. His focus, patience, and love for thinking through tricky problems helped him reach a goal that many grown-up players dream about.

How It All Began Sarwagya first discovered chess by watching older players move pieces around the board. He became curious about the patterns—like how knights hop or how rooks zoom in straight lines.

That curiosity grew fast. While many toddlers can only sit still for a short time, Sarwagya could stay with the chessboard for long stretches. He picked up ideas after seeing them only once and remembered complicated move sequences that surprised even adults.

arshmallows aren’t just for hot cocoa or s’mores— they’re also a super fun way to learn about air pressure! In this experiment, you’ll watch marshmallows magically grow bigger right before your eyes. The “puff-up” trick is simple, safe, and a great way to explore how invisible air all around us can affect even a squishy, sugary snack.

What You’ll Need

You only need a few supplies for this experiment: • A bag of regular-size marshmallows (mini marshmallows will work too, but the results are easier to see with bigger ones) • A microwave-safe bowl OR a large clear cup with plastic wrap • A microwave (option 1) or a vacuum pump/sealed container (option 2, if you have one)

Step-by-Step Instructions (Microwave Method)

Get Ready: Place one marshmallow in the center of a microwave-safe plate or bowl.

Heat It Up: Turn on the microwave for about 20 seconds. Watch carefully!

See the Puff-Up: The marshmallow will start to grow, doubling (or even tripling!) in size.

Cool and Collapse: Once you stop the microwave, the marshmallow will shrink back down again.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a musician! When I was 7 years old and grew up in New York City, a music teacher believed in me and taught me to play the trombone. I studied classical music and performed at Carnegie Hall with the NYC All City Orchestra. Then I learned to play jazz and played on that same stage with big legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, and Branford Marsalis. Music and performing were my first passions!

What advice would you give to a kid who wants a job like yours?

Be curious! Start by visiting a local auto repair shop or training center with a parent and ask if you can watch and learn how cars are repaired. You are welcome at our shop! Then check out the

TechForce Foundation with your family, they are a great resource to help young people get started with automotive careers. Most of all, stay passionate and never stop learning.

One fun fact NOT about your job?

I also trained in radio broadcasting, and now I host my own radio show about car culture. Wrench Nation Car Talk Show airs every Wednesday at 4 p.m. Arizona time, on 88.7FM The Pulse at EVIT in Mesa. I interview people from all over the world, like the stuntmen in the movie Ford V Ferrari, drivers in professional drifting industry, and more. Each episode becomes a podcast so everyone can tune in on your favorite podcast platform. It is my way of sharing cool stories and car knowledge with the world!

id you know that some of the coolest stories you’ll ever read are true?

That’s what nonfiction is: books about real animals, places, science, and how things work. Reading nonfiction can help you learn new words and answer big questions about the world. And the best part? You can choose books about things you already love—like dinosaurs, ocean animals, construction trucks, or even the weather!

Nonfiction picture books are great because they use short sentences, fun facts, and awesome illustrations. The pictures help you see up close what the book is talking about, and the facts help you discover something new! You can point to interesting details, make guesses, and talk about what you notice.

Nonfiction isn’t homework—it’s exploring!

With every page the reader turns, they are thinking, “what is gonna happen next?” I love this book and give it five out of five stars.
