From the General Manager

DEAR OAKWOOD MEMBERS,

As summer comes to a close, I want to take a moment to thank you for making this season at Oakwood one of our most successful yet. From tournaments on the course to lively evenings on the patio, our summer was filled with record participation, energy, and connection. It’s been a joy to see our community thriving and to watch members, families, and guests enjoy all that Oakwood has to offer.

While summer may be wrapping up, the fun doesn’t stop here. We’ve planned a full calendar of fall activities designed to keep our membership active and engaged. Whether you’re looking to stay competitive, stay connected, or simply enjoy good company, there’s something for everyone this season.

On behalf of our entire Oakwood team, thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm. We look forward to seeing you around the Club this fall and building on the incredible momentum of our summer together.

Warm regards,

From the Course

Oakwood Agronomy Synopsis – Midseason Progress Report

The Agronomy Team has worked hard over the past several weeks, making steady course improvements despite challenging weather and turf conditions. Key efforts include recovery in thin areas, weed control, irrigation upgrades, and preparing the course for upcoming events.

Key Progress & Practices

Aerification & Topdressing – Fall aerification went smoothly with 3/8-inch tines, ideal for the conditions and greens’ stress levels.

Sodding Projects – Sodding is complete, though some areas may look rough until fully rooted. Cool nights are slowing zoysia growth; treatments begin in September to help transition into dormancy.

Weed & Disease Management – We are monitoring for disease risk as temps shift. Weed control remains targeted, with many summer weeds expected to die off naturally with cooler evenings

Greens Care – Weather extremes forced adjustments to reduce stress. Practices have been adapted to maintain health through difficult conditions.

Mowing Adjustments – As zoysia slows, mowing frequency will drop, and heights will be raised to ensure healthy dormancy.

Irrigation Audit – A system review is underway to repair heads, leaks, and coverage gaps. Current brown spots are due to lack of rainfall and limited irrigation

Looking Ahead

Greens responded well to aerification. This fall, we’ll vent with needle tines and light topdressing to encourage rooting. Fairways and tees will slow with cooler temps, while rough improves and fall overseeding begins as weather allows.

A Note of Thanks

We appreciate your patience and support this summer. The progress made positions us well for the Knickerbocker and sets the foundation for longterm conditioning.

Regards,

From the Head Golf Pro

SEPTEMBER 2025 OAKWOOD GOLF EVENTS

Greetings Oakwood Members,

August has swiftly passed, bringing the arrival of fall. Autumn golf at Oakwood is undoubtedly the finest time to tee off in the Kansas City area. As temperatures begin to dip and the course sees increased activity, the conditions of the course will be exceptional. To help maintain our golf course in pristine condition, I would like to share a few key practices we can all do better at implementing:

Best Practices for a Healthy Course:

- Repair your ball mark and an additional one on every green

- Sand all divots made on the fairways

- Collect your divots and place them in the designated sand box on the cart

- Use a linear partner at the driving range to ensure consistent divot patterns

- Follow cart traffic guidelines throughout the course.

I'd like to highlight our September events:

September 1st – Labor Day Six – Six – Six

September 11th – Men's League Guest Night

September 12th – Couples Twilight (Guest Welcomed)

September 19th – Fall Men’s Member Guest

I am excited to wrap up the golf season on a high note!

From the Director of Instruction Coach Mo's Favorites

This month I want to highlight one of my all-time favorite golf books: Every Shot Must Have a Purpose: How GOLF54 Can Make You a Better Player by Pia Nilsson & Lynn Marriott

It’s not your typical “how-to” swing manual. Instead, it focuses on the mental side of the game — routines, focus, and how to get the absolute best out of each shot you play. If you’re looking for a book that will not only inspire you but also give you practical tools to take out onto the course, this is a must-read. I use this all the time when coaching and even when I'm playing!

Book synopsis:

“Unlike any other golf book, Every Shot Must Have a Purpose offers cutting-edge techniques for integrating the physical, technical, mental, emotional, and social parts of a player’s game. The book’s revolutionary pre-shot routine will improve your focus, leading to a golf swing that is not only successful but can be repeated under extreme pressure. Emphasizing the individual golfer rather than a rigid set of mechanics, their VISION54 method takes the frustration out of the game. Why 54? Because they believe it’s possible to shoot a 54 (making a birdie on every hole of a par-72 course) if you have the right mind-set and well-honed intuitive power.”
