It hardly feels like June is here. Temperatures in the 60s and consistent cloudy, rainy days seem more fitting for April. While the weather has been great for the greens and rough, it's been tough on the fairways. The early-season turf conditions in the fairways have prompted many members to ask the following questions:
Why are the fairways in such bad condition?
The two biggest reasons are Bermudagrass contamination and the cold, wet spring. Bermudagrass is a warm-season turf that has spread throughout many areas of the course. Unfortunately, it didn’t survive this winter, which included several days below freezing. Even when daytime temperatures rose above freezing, melting snow would refreeze at night, putting additional stress on the turf. While Kansas City often experiences winter stress, it’s rare to have a prolonged cold and wet spring like the one we’ve had this year. The winter damaged the Bermuda, and the unusually cool spring prevented it from recovering leading to the poor fairway conditions we’re seeing.
What have we done to fix the fairways?
Over the past month, we’ve fertilized to encourage new growth, applied fungicide to combat Zoysia patch and other turf diseases, sodded many of the thin areas, and verticut to stimulate shoot production in what turf remains. While we are doing everything we can to promote recovery, consistent warm weather is essential. Fortunately, it looks like June may finally bring the change we need.
What are we doing to prevent this from happening again?
The good news is that much of the Bermuda has died and is being replaced with Zoysia. Two major steps have already been taken: we’ve sodded Zoysia in the fairways on Holes 10 and 15. These holes had significant Bermuda coverage and always struggled in the spring. After this season, they should perform and play much better. Additionally, we’ll follow a long-term herbicide program aimed at gradually and effectively reducing Bermuda in the fairways over the next couple of years. It’s a commitment we believe is well worth the effort.
I’m confident that the warm June weather will bring the conditions we’ve all been waiting for. Thank you for your patience and I look forward to seeing you on the golf course.
See you on the course!

New Practice Tee Areas Now Open!
We’re thrilled to announce the launch of two exciting additions to our driving range now open for use!
The lower range tee offers a unique opportunity to practice uphill iron shots, while our new short game target area is ideal for honing your scoring clubs from 100 yards and in. These enhancements were designed with purpose and Coach Mo is especially excited about the short game range, noting that many golfers struggle inside 100 yards due to limited practice time. With these new spaces, there’s no excuse not to sharpen your game!
How to Access the New Areas:
To reach the lower tee, follow the paved pathway from the main range. To explore the new wedge range, take the mulch trail from Hole 8 and follow it back toward the short game target area
These additions complement our already outstanding practice facilities and reflect Oakwood’s ongoing commitment to providing one of the premier golf experiences in the region.
We look forward to seeing you out there!
✅ Try This: In a chair, perform motion as described
1.Sitting with an upright spine, cross one leg over the other with ankle resting on opposite knee
2. Using the hand of folded leg, press knee downward gently to increase stretch
3.Lean forward into motion to increase tension in hip.
4.Hold stretch for 30-60 seconds
5.Repeat for 10–12 reps, 2 sets
Prevention is easier than rehab keep your hip mobility up by implementing this into your routine!
