Sonoma Wine Dinner

From the Director of Grounds

DEAR OAKWOOD MEMBERS,

Spring is Here — Turf Management & Spring Growth

As we welcome warmer days, I closely monitor soil temperatures in early spring because they play a key role in turf growth and greening. As soil temperatures rise, turf growth accelerates. Bentgrass, which covers our greens, begins to green up and grow when soil temperatures reach 50-55 degrees (typically mid-April). Zoysia, the warm-season grass on our fairways and tees, starts growing at around 65 degrees (May). As soil temperatures improve, so does the overall look and playability of the golf course.

Annual weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass begin germinating at 55-degree soil temperatures, which is why we have been working hard to apply pre-emergent treatments over the past few weeks. Applying pre-emergent before weed seeds germinate creates a protective barrier that eliminates weeds as they emerge from the soil. If you haven’t treated your lawn yet, now is the time to do so!

To further promote turf growth in the spring, we aerify the greens. The holes punched in the turf, combined with fresh sand, create new pore spaces that increase oxygen levels in the soil, encouraging deeper root development. Stronger roots improve turf health and help prepare the greens to withstand summer stress.

Cart traffic is another concern this time of year. In early spring, turf is not yet fully rooted or actively growing, especially in shaded and low-lying areas. Additionally, trees and grass are not actively absorbing water, and with cooler temperatures, wet, boggy conditions can persist. The maintenance team monitors course conditions daily and adjusts cart traffic to protect the turf, ensuring the best possible playing surface.

Spring in Kansas City is a beautiful time of year. As soil temperatures rise, not only does the turf come to life, but forsythia, dogwoods, and flowers begin their stunning seasonal bloom. Enjoy the vibrant colors while they last, and we look forward to seeing you on the course!

See you on the course!
