sins of any, they are forgiven them, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20: 21-22). 4Sacrament of the Eucharist (Thanksgiving) Instituted by the Lord Jesus in the upper room in Zion, on the night of His passion when He took bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave it to His disciples saying, “Take eat, this is My Body. Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it and He said to them “This is My Blood of the new covenant which is shed for many” (Mark 14: 22-24). 5- Sacrament of the Unction of the Sick Instituted by the Lord Jesus when He said to His disciples, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers” (Matthew 10:8), and, “Whatever city you enter … heal the sick who are there” (Luke 10:8). The Apostles then put the Lord’s words into practice: “They anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them” (Mark 6:13). Our teacher St. James the Apostle advised believers to practice it, by saying, “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5:14-15). 6- Sacrament of the Holy Matrimony Instituted by the Lord Jesus who blessed the Sacrament of Matrimony by attending the wedding of Cana of Galilee, where, “He manifested His glory and His disciples believed in Him” (John 2: 1-11). Also, teacher St. Paul says, “This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and

the Churches” (Ephesians 5:32). This means that the physical union between a man and his wife is a sign and symbol of a greater spiritual matter, that is, of the unity of heart and soul, resembling the unity of Christ and the Church. 7- Sacrament of Priesthood Instituted by the Lord Jesus when He chose His twelve disciples among many of His followers, and called them Apostles. The selection was accomplished after a whole night of prayer, when the Lord Jesus went out to the mountain to pray (Luke 6: 12-13), and then sent them to preach saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand” (Matthew 10:7). The Lord said to them, “I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain” (John 15:16). He gave them the authority saying, “Assuredly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18). After the resurrection, the Lord, “Breathed on them and said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 2:23), and to them only, He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matthew: 28:1920). He gave the mystery of His Holy Body and Blood only to them saying, “Do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19). Ref. of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

The seven Sacraments of the Church are the channels by which we receive the graces and blessings of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has existed in the church since the day of Pentecost, when He dwelt in it according to the Lord’s promise: “I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of Truth when the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him, but you know Him for He dwells with you, and will be in you” (John 14:16, 17). The Holy Spirit works in the church through the Sacraments, giving us His gifts, blessings and comfort, and teaches us and guides us to the way of truth. “But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26). The Seven Sacraments of the Church are: 1- Sacrament of Baptism. 2- Sacrament of Confirmation 3- Sacrament of Confession 4- Sacrament of Eucharist 5- Sacrament of Unction of Sick 6- Sacrament of Matrimony 7- Sacrament of Priesthood. The Lord Christ instituted all these Sacraments, and the Holy Bible mentions them in detail. 1- Sacrament of Baptism Instituted by the Lord Jesus by His Baptism in the River Jordan and by His words to Nicodemus saying: “Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God... Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3), and by saying to our fathers the Apostles, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name

2- Sacrament of Confirmation Instituted by the Lord Jesus when He said: “If anyone thirsts let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John 7:37-39). About the Sacrament of Confirmation, in the Book of Acts it is mentioned : “Now when the Apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit” (Acts 8:14-17). The Holy Spirit was received by the laying of hands, but when the number of believers increased, the Apostles were unable to keep track of each individual to lay upon them their hands in order to receive the Holy Spirit. Therefore, they made the Myron out of certain oils mixed with spices; the same spices which were brought to the tomb to embalm the shrouded Christ. It was approved for the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, and allowed the priests to anoint the newly baptized by the Myron to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, to dwell in them, in order to become temples of the Holy Spirit. 3- Sacrament of Repentance Instituted by the Lord Jesus when He said to His pure disciples: “Assuredly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew: 18:18), and after Resurrection He said, “As the Father has sent me, I also send you and when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit. The Books of History document the story of Israel. They Cover the Entry of the Promised Land under Joshua - the only adult who left Egypt and entered the Promised Land. Joshua the successor of Moses became a Judge over Israel and was followed by a series of God inspired men and women who ruled over Israel, without voting or recruiting a monarch.

The Books of the Prophets are divided into Major and Minor prophets. This is nothing to do with their importance but more to do with their size. The Longest book in the Bible is Isaiah and the shortest is Obadiah.

Some people don’t feel that the Old Testament has anything to add to their Christian faith. It’s not that they don’t believe in it but they can’t understand how it is relevant to them. In the first part of this series we talked about the Authority and faithfulness of the Old Testament and in fact how people in the early church came to know Christ through the writings of the Old Testament. In this part we will explore deeper on how to understand the Divisions of the Old Testament. St. Paul said in his letter to the Galatians 3:24 that the Law was our schoolmaster or our tutor to pave the way for us receiving and understanding The Lord Jesus Christ as our God and Saviour. Every process requires adequate preparation you cannot short cut the learning process. The Old Testament is a Book of experience. Of real people in real situations and how they respond to God and how God responds to them. There is great solas, comfort and cheer awaiting us in the Old Testament. How people seek the Lord, How they petition Him, how they worship and praise Him and how they disregard and upset Him. It is our way to see the Eternal Christ as Saviour of the World past, present and future. I want to show you some ways to navigate the Old Testament so you find what you want quickly and understand the thread that runs through it. First you have to understand that the Old Testament is a library of books and not just one book. It is a library of love stories between God and Man. They fall into 4 principle divisions - Law 5 books, History 16 books, Devotional 7 books, and Prophets 18 books. As you can see that you can use the fingers of your hand to help you remember these divisions. While these divisions are simple like

everything else they have exemptions. For example Genesis, which is grouped with the Law, has the history of mankind in it and covers about 3,000 years in its 50 or so chapters. It also has the first promise / prophecy of The Saviour who is to come into the world. Some history books like 1 Samuel has the beautiful prayer of Hannah in it. Likewise some books of the prophets have historical facts in them. And as we know Psalms are full of prophecy about the coming of the Lord. The First Five Books are called the Pentateuch and are authored by Moses. How Moses was able to so expertly report the order in which life appeared which is even accepted by evolutionists is a clear testament to the inspiration of these writings. Genesis or the beginning contains the history of Man beginning, his fall, and the promise of redemption Exodus or the going out records the freeing or the passing over from slavery to freedom under the leadership of Moses. It records Pharaohs hardiness of heart and the seven plagues of Egypt, the Passover, the crossing of the Red Sea and most importantly the Giving of the Law - The Ten Commandments The Building of the Tabernacle. The beginning of Systematic worship lead by priests and Levities Leviticus takes its name from the tribe of Levi, which were set aside for the role of worship. The book of Leviticus has in it the Laws of worship and of the priesthood and Levites. Numbers takes its name because it documents the census of Israel and also sets out the Codified Law. Deuteronomy is a continuation of Numbers. It covers Moses’ final instruction to the people of God.

Last month we began looking at the Third Letter of John the Evangelist and you were introduced to Diotrephes. You were encouraged to review your words, thoughts, and deeds, and make a time for confession to find out if you are consistent with God’s teachings or if you were more like Diotrephes. This month we will introduce you to Gaius. The purpose of 3 John is to encourage Gaius to continue extending hospitality to traveling missionaries, especially those who come from St John, who are loyal to him. In particular, St John urges Gaius' reception of one missionary named Demetrius (v. 12). St John thinks very highly of Gaius, to whom the letter is written. We do not know exactly who Gaius was, but he was obviously someone that St John loved as a brother Christian. St John held him in great esteem for his Christian walk and conduct (verses 1-6) and conveyed his own appreciation for Gaius by calling him “well beloved” 4 times in this letter (verses 1, 2, 5, 11), being a term of endearment and personal warmth. It was a standard custom in ancient letters for the writer to ask about one’s health. However, by praying that Gaius’s health prospers just as his soul prospers, St John indicated that Gaius is spirituality fit and that he is growing in faith. St John connects health with spiritual vitality and paid no importance to a prayer for material wealth. St John has heard from others that Gaius was a man whose lifestyle was consistent with God’s truth. He walked and worked for Christ in selfless Christian love. Unlike Diotrephes, Gaius was a gracious man who had the truth in him,

and carried out the reality of his faith. He was sincere in his religion, and devoted to his God. He exhibited his charity, by showing love to the brethren, kindness to the poor, hospitality to Christian strangers, and readiness to accommodate them for the service of the gospel. The letter gives the impression that Gaius knew Diotrephes, and therefore, Gaius can also be regarded as courageous, since he was not intimidated by Diotrephes’s venomous threats. St John commended Gaius for his love of the brethren and encouraged him to continue working for the truth; for St John knew that the truth of Jesus satisfies not for a season but for all eternity. Those who walk in the truth of Christ enjoy God’s presence working in their lives now and throughout eternity, beyond this world. They are fulfilled, complete and are at peace with themselves and others. Life with Christ is satisfying supressing hunger for the worldly desires. Every Christian likes to think of themselves as Gaius, but are you? A small monthly exercise: Ask yourself if you are living in God’s truth? Do you live by your faith? Does your Faith work by love? Do you show charity to others and kindness to the less fortunate? Are you an example to others? Because we aim to be Christ like, we must always focus on improving spiritually. Write down the areas where you want to advance and put together a plan on how to do this. For example, showing kindness is an easy and rewarding virtue, consistent with God’s truth. If it is an area where you are lacking, then start conscientiously show kindness to your brother. To be continued next month ……….. The Korbanah is a symbol of the Holy Church. It is made of many wheat seeds, each seed of which refers to a member of the Church. Without grinding the grains, each remains independent and not united with others. The milling process is a symbol of strife in our spiritual life, our fasting and prayers, the pain and trouble of service, and the pain of persecution. With the grinding, it is difficult to distinguish between the grains; and the scattered members become one body. Water, which symbolizes the Holy Spirit, unites the flour in one body, same as the Holy Spirit unites the Church to become one Body of Christ. The Korbanah (The Bread of Offering) has to be round, since it represents Christ who is without a beginning or an end. It contains no salt; for Christ is the salt of the earth who came down from heaven to make us salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13). Yeast is used in the Korban to symbolize sin that Jesus had carried in His own body and abolished by His death exactly like the yeast in the bread is killed and removed by fire. Korban is made in a room called “Bethlehem”; which refers to the place where Jesus was born.

THE SEAL OF THE KORBANAH The seal has an outer circle with words of the Trisagion: Holy God, Holy Almighty, Holy Immortal.

The Korbanah represents members of the Holy Church, united with Christ.

The Spadikon represents Our Lord Jesus.

The 12 Crosses symbolize the 12 apostles.

The 5 holes signify the five piercing wounds of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The seal of the Korban, reminds us of the Seal of the Father that Jesus spoke of: “Do not Labor for the food, which perishes, but for the food, which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give you, because God the father has set His seal on Him” (John 6:27)

It's just basically an exchange of greetings, or a working relationship. That means you just happen to work with this person and you may only speak to them concerning your work. So, these are just acquaintances or work mates. We cannot really call these types of people friends, but more preferably to call them acquaintances or colleagues. The second type may be a friend that harms you. This type of friendship is one that wants to take from you all the time. Whether it is money, prestige or many other things. They may also be harmful in that they give you wrong advice and teach you to solve your problems in a wrong or evil way. They may be leading you to the path of death, whether spiritual or physical death. They may lead you to do things that are against your conscience or against your faith. Deep inside of you, you know that it is wrong and will get you in trouble. They may pressure you to smoke or have a boyfriend or to steal. Look at the example of Job and his friends in the Old Testament. Job calls his friends, "miserable comforters", because instead of assisting him to get over his distress, they make him more uncomfortable by their words. We also see the example of Rehoboam, who took the advice of the young men instead of the elders, and it brought about the division of the tribes of Israel. If we look at some statistics of teen behaviour, it reveals that: 66% lied to a parent, teacher or other adult, 60% lied to their parents, 45% watched MTV at least once a week, 36% cheated on an exam, 25% smoked a cigarette or other tobacco product, 1 out of 9 got drunk, 1 out of 10 used illegal drugs. A lot of this behaviour is influenced by peer pressure. Young people face severe peer pressure to act in certain ways, to talk in certain ways, to dress in certain ways, to join certain groups, and to try certain things. Any deviation from what is considered the "normal" or popular thing to do can result in ridicule and rejection. If someone does not have a

What are the effects of peer pressure? Experimentation: The teen may be asked by his friends to try something and is told that it won't hurt him. Fear and frustration: He may be afraid because deep inside of him he knows that it is wrong. It frustrates him because he wants his friends to accept him. Depression: Repeated attempts at conformity (to fit in) results not in fulfilment but frustration and loneliness. Confusion: Between values and family religious values.

peer and

Negative peer pressure involves a choice of what to: 1. Act like 2. End up like 3. Feel treated like by this group or others. Peer pressure promises acceptance and approval to young people, but it is an empty promise. These type of friends are not real and true friends. Peer pressure is natural and understandable. It can be positive or negative. It is unavoidable, not only do young people face it every day, but their parents, teachers and others do too. Our Lord Jesus Himself was faced with peer pressure, yet without sinning. The Bible says that He was, "tempted in every way, Just as we are -- yet without sin." In Romans 12:2 St. Paul tells us, "and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

People are in a rush, no time to talk to others. So, you drive through speak to a machine and not to a human and get your order. You go to the bank and you can do your banking through the ATM's, no contact with a human soul and no hassles.

Everyone needs friends; even adults cannot do without certain friends. Young people may learn lifelong lessons from friendships, grow in Christ through friends, get in trouble because of friends and become very close to friends. We need to understand the three types of friendships, what the Bible teaches about friendship, and the characteristics of true friendship. Friendship is a vital part of young people's lives today. They cannot do without their friends. They would feel so threatened if they lost their friends. It is a natural part of growing up. So, it is a human need. Rarely do we find someone who does not have a couple of friends, especially in the teenage years. I am worried however, that perhaps some people are becoming more individualistic and separating themselves from society. There are a lot of lonely people in today's society who have no friends, and no one who cares for them. Perhaps technology and the American society is promulgating this ideology. How, you may say, when everything around us is being automated? You go to get gas and all you have to do is put a piece of plastic into a machine and you have your gas. No one to talk to or give you the change or to argue with. You go to McDonald's or Burger King and the same thing happens.

Even worse than this is the Internet; you can almost do everything on the Internet these days and without saying a single word to anyone. You could live in your own little world inside the Internet and do all of your chores, buy everything you want, pay your bills, and you can even get a pizza from Pizza Hut! What is this going to do to human relationships, especially between friends? Are friends going to be something of the past? I really wonder sometimes! Also American society, in particular, encourages in us this type of behaviour. Everyone here is very individualistic; it's how the society operates. Everyone is on his or her own. You may be living in an apartment block and not even know who your neighbours are! I pray and hope that this technology does not destroy our society. Well, I do not want to go too far off the track of our topic. Friends are the lifeblood of adolescence. We need to understand the three types of friendships, what the Bible teaches about friendship, and the characteristics of true friendship. We also want to know what the fathers of the Church taught about friendship. You must also know what kind of friend you need to be.

The first type I call acquaintances. They are people that you know. They may be fellow students at school in your same class or activity. Or they may be acquaintances of your family, or on your sports team. You may not feel very close to these people, and it is probably a very s uperficial relationship. You know it's the type of relationship of "Hi, Sally, how are you doing'? and see ya tomorrow" type of thing. Just someone you know and meet perhaps every day, but you do not actually sit and speak to this person on a personal level.

defines, and is grieved, and is angered, and has all the qualities which belong clearly to one that moves" freely (St Gregory Nazianzen, Orations. XXXI.6, On the Holy Spirit). God works person to person, within human wills and consciousness, in the heart, through language. God the Holy Spirit relates interpersonally to Apostles on an intimate basis, while maintaining His own distinctive relation to God the Father and God the Son in the eternal mystery of the communion of the triune God (St Cyril of Jerusalem, Catechetical Lecturers). Because we are in a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit we can sin against Him. You can sin against the Spirit in two ways, by "grieving the Spirit," and blaspheming the Spirit." There are not one but many sins that grieve the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit may be ignored or refused, having been once accepted, as the Galatians had turned from their first love back to the old ways (Gal. 3:2,3). The Spirit may be resisted as in Acts 7:51). The convicting work of the Spirit may be quenched, choked, and virtually extinguished by our resistances (1 Thess. 5:19). A good work may be begun in the Spirit that but a person may leave it uncompleted or worse turn it into a misdeed (1 Tim. 1:19). That is why St Paul wrote to the Ephesians begging them not to grieve the Holy Spirit by turning away (Ephesians 4:30) There is a more serious sin than Grieving the Holy Spirit, that of Blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Christ our Lord specifically warned and said “Therefore I

say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven

men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. (Mat 12:31-32). When this statement was declared by our Lord, teachers of the law had said that the miracles He performed were by the power of evil. Anyone who so turns from their back on the Holy Spirit and mocks Him in that way immediately puts themselves beyond the power of forgiveness, because every step towards repentance and faith is enabled by the Holy Spirit (St. Gregory of Nyssa). Blasphemy as such is not unforgivable. St. Paul shows us that through much labour and repentance a person can return. God is not unable or unwilling to forgive any sin, but the sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit makes a person unwilling to receive God’s Divine Grace and mercy. If you leave behind the help of the Holy Spirit, what else is there left. God is never defeated by our blasphemy but we are. In times past newcomers to the faith were taught to recite by heart the following points to affirm their faith in God the Holy Spirit: We believe in the Holy Spirit who Spoke in the law, And taught by the prophets, And descended to the Jordan, Spoke by the Apostles, and lives in the saints; Thus we believe in Him: that He is the Holy Spirit, The Spirit of God, the perfect Spirit, the Spirit Paraclete, uncreated, proceeding from the Father and receiving of the Son, in whom we believe. (Creed of Epiphanius A.D. 374)

Apostles gathered to discern important matters of faith and doctrine at Jerusalem they deliberated and declared ,"It seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us" (Acts 15:28) The Bible declares constantly that the Holy Spirit teaches, comforts, guides, gives, calls, and sends. God the Holy Spirit is attested as acting as persons act. When the Apostles speak in the New Testament of the Holy Spirit they witness to actions so personal such as: guiding (Rom. 8:14), convicting (John 16:8), interceding (Rom. 8:26), and calling (Acts 13:2), commissioning (Acts 20:28).

We are about to enter a period in the Liturgical year where the church concentrates most sincerely on the Work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church and the individual. This period of the Apostle’s fast which commences with the Feast of the Descent of The Holy Spirit or the feast of Pentecost and provides all believers a time to focus and reassess our adherence to the Great Commission of Christ: Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen (Matthew 28:18-19) During this period the church responses and hymns focus on the Holy Spirit. So it is fitting that we say a word or two on the Holy Spirit. First, we must never call the Holy Spirit “it.” For the Holy Spirit is not impersonal, but we know Him to be the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. For Christ Himself said “I will send Him to “(John 16:7). When the Saintly

Like a person, the Holy Spirit can be resisted (Acts 7:51), avoided, or responsively answered (Acts 10:1921). Only a person can be grieve (Isa. 63:10 and Eph. 4:30). Only one with intelligence and the capacity for communication can speak from heart to heart. These are qualities of personhood. Only a person can teach, talk, and reveal His will to other persons. As persons speak and communicate, so does the Holy Spirit speak in the Holy Bible, in the Sacraments of the Church and in the hearts of believers to show them His will and answer them ever so clearly. Only a person can be lied to—no one can lie to a stone or vegetable. Ananias was condemned not for lying to St. Peter but for lying to the Holy Spirit. Those who lie to the Holy Spirit, lie to God (Acts 5:3-9). That is why honesty and openness is so important in confession, least we be found to be lying to the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Repentance. The Spirit is found actively directing the mission of the Apostles, setting aside Sts Paul and Barnabas for their specific work (Acts 13:2), selecting overseers for the churches (Acts 20:28), bearing witness (Acts 5:32; Rom. 8:16), distributing gifts freely as he chooses (I Cor. 12:11). If the Holy Spirit is not God but an activity of God, then "He will be affected, but will not effect, and will cease to exist as soon as He has been affected, for this is the nature of an activity. How is it then that He acts and says such and such things, and
