A large focus of the home is keeping residents involved with the wider Cheviot community through church, clubs and organisations. Encouraging visitors to interact with all residents and inviting the community to perform or attend events is part of keeping them connected. They also support residents in taking walks to cafes or trips for an ice cream - making sure residents aren’t forgotten with old age. Therefore, they hope residents are surrounded by both a broad and supportive network of people.
One resident spoke of how their friend was in terminal care, requiring expert and intense care. Through this whole process, staff proved they were “sensitive to the needs of each individual”, and the resident attest they “could not have wished for better care for him."
With just 13 rest home beds, it’s one of the most intimate care facilities in Aotearoa.

The communal lounge is designed to absorb vast, mountainous views and a vegetable garden provides fresh food for everyone. At the same time, Coleman says the unique care and investment staff offer to each resident ensures their needs,
The long-term plan for the rest home is to continue this happy, stress-free, secure and loving environment for future and current residents. They believe every person in their home deserves to feel listened to and encouraged, no matter how independent or dependent they are.

Archer Home is proud to be the South Island winners of the Over 40 Beds award.
Archer Home are proud to be Winners of Aged Advisor’s Best Aged Care over 40 beds award for the fourth time. Having served the Christchurch community for over 65 years, the staff feel a great honour at having their investment recognised.

Graeme Mitchell, General Manager believes that as a smaller boutique home, they offer a ‘home away from home’, where staff know the residents by name and genuinely care for them and their families.
He believes this sets them apart from the many other retirement homes available.
“People matter and helping them to have the best day ever is our goal for every resident. We want to continue to listen to our residents, their families, our staff and visitors to discover what else we can do to make every day a happy day for them.”


A regular visitor to the home agrees this strong community makes Archer “such a lovely rest home with a wonderful family atmosphere.”
A large part of the Archer home is their commitment to Christian values. As part of the Canterbury/ Westland Baptist Association, they have a strong desire to serve the community in the most faith-filled generous way they can. They claim this desire translates to an eager focus on providing the best service possible to residents.
When asked what residents were saying about the Award, Graeme says “Residents were totally thrilled. It’s their way of telling the staff how much they are treasured by the residents.”
