Voice of My City Jerome Robbins and New York NOW – MARCH 30, 2019 Jerome Robbins was an inveterate observer, seeker, and creator. In diaries, drawings, watercolors, paintings, story scenarios, poems—and, especially, in dance—he reimagined the world around him. And New York dominated that world, where he was born one-hundred years ago and where he lived his entire adult life. Ideas of New York have long inspired artists but often the city serves as a backdrop in an artwork rather than the basis for plot, theme, and meaning. Robbins put the city at the center of his artistic imaginings. From Fancy Free—his breakout hit ballet in 1944—to the musical West Side Story on stage (1957) and screen (1961) and the ballets N.Y. Export: Opus Jazz (1958) and Glass Pieces (1983), Robbins explored the joys, struggles, grooves, routines, and aspirations of New York. And in recreating the city around him on stage, Robbins found a place for himself. Voice of My City traces Robbins’ life and dances alongside the history of New York, inspiring viewers to see the city as both a muse and a home.

Exhibition Programs Jerome Robbins: A Dance Legacy SAT, MAR 2 | 2:30 PM The Millennium Chamber Players’ Artistic Director Alexander Wu, and ENCOUNTERS Dance Company Founder Anna Maria Manalo join the Library’s Jerome Robbins Centennial celebration by performing highlights from his theater, film and ballet works; from West Side Story, Fancy Free, and Fiddler on the Roof to the music of Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Ives, and Glass.

Library’s heroes, helping to organize a starstudded City Center gala to save the Dance Collection (now named the Jerome Robbins Dance Division). After a life of support and engagement, the dance community continues to to refer to the Library at Lincoln Center as “Jerry’s Library.” Learn the story of Jerome Robbins, the Library champion, with screenings, recitations, and special guest commentary.

Jerome Robbins’ Poppa Piece Jerry’s Library: Jerome Robbins, Library Champion THUR, MAR 7 | 6 PM As a young boy, Jerome Robbins’ budding imagination was nourished in the children’s room of The New York Public Library. In 1965, after achieving paramount success, Robbins fueled the growth of the Dance Collection at the Library for the Performing Arts by donating a portion of his Fiddler on the Roof royalties in perpetuity. At a moment of financial crisis, Robbins was one of the

THUR, MAR 21 | 6 PM In the early 1990s, as Jerome Robbins confronted the twilight of his storied career, he endeavored to create one last theater work that would reconcile the questions and mysteries of his life. Hidden away at his Bridgehampton beach home and cloistered behind the doors of private rehearsal studios, Robbins tirelessly attempted to construct an honest self-portrait, detailing his own Jewish immigrant heritage, family history, and personal failures. Jerome Robbins Photographs from Abroad NOW – MARCH 30, 2019 On third floor of the Library for the Performing Arts, the Dance Division’s celebration of Jerome Robbins’ Todd Bolender, Jerome Robbins, and Francisco Moncion, Paris, 1952.

Jerome Robbins Dance Division centennial continues with a Reading Room case exhibit focused on Robbins’ own photography. Drawing together more than two dozen images taken by Robbins in France, Italy, Israel, and New Jersey in the 1950s, this mini-exhibit highlights how Robbins’ keen eye for the textures and significance of place — poignantly attested to in Voice of My City for his hometown of New York — traveled alongside him when he visited new and unfamiliar locations.

The Fiddler Expanding Tradition: Kelly Hall-Tompkins in concert MON, APR 25 | 6 PM Broadway’s acclaimed “Fiddler,” classical violin virtuoso Kelly Hall-Tompkins comes to the Library with new concert arrangements of songs from the beloved Bock and Harnick musical, as featured on her new album The Fiddler Expanding Tradition. Developed by the Fiddler herself with the creative team, arranger Oran Eldor, and conductor/arranger Ted Sperling from the recent Bartlett Sher Broadway production, this program travels Klezmer to caprice to jazz ballad. Help us celebrate the soul of the violin, and enjoy the evergreen power of Fiddler on the Roof.

The People’s Theater Celebrating 75 Years of New York City Center NOW – MARCH 2, 2019 On a winter evening in 1943—in a former Masonic Temple on West 55th Street that had been scheduled for demolition—a concert was held whose reverberations are still being felt 75 years later. That night, New York City Center was born. As the first performing arts center in Manhattan, the fledgling institution broke new ground by presenting dance, music, theater, and opera under the same roof—setting the mold for the presentation of the arts around the country in the second half of the 20th century.

For the first time ever, a striking new exhibition will tell the story of “The People’s Theater” through a wide range of material including photographs, costumes, props, posters, and other ephemera that provide a fresh perspective on City Center’s first 75 years. During its storied history, City Center has been the birthplace of New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, and the revival of Chicago—the longest running American musical on Broadway. All this and more will be featured in the exhibit, which will also showcase rarely seen performance photographs such as Leonard Bernstein leading his orchestra for the first time, selections from 25 years of Encores! productions ranging from Fiorello to Me and My Girl, and the hundreds of dance companies from around the world that have participated in City Center’s celebrated Fall for Dance Festival.

A special gallery will be devoted to original Al Hirschfeld drawings that document nearly the entire history of theater, dance, music, and opera at City Center. Like so much of the material in the exhibition, many of these Hirschfeld works will be on display for the first time.

This celebration of City Center’s 75th Anniversary will fill visitors with the thrill of the performing arts that, to this day, enlivens every room of the building. It will show without a doubt that City Center has been not just a center for performing arts, but truly at the center of the performing arts in New York City. And by honoring City Center’s enduring past, it will give both its longtime devotees and newest admirers a taste of what’s to come in its next 75.

Sounding Circuits Audible Histories JANUARY 15 – MARCH 23, 2019 Featuring a state-of-the art immersive multi-channel audio system surrounded by rare objects, artifacts, and recordings from the early history of electronic music, Sounding Circuits: Audible Histories explores the networks of composers and engineers - as well as the groundbreaking facilities and revolutionary technologies - that played a crucial role in the expansion of electronic sound from the 1950s to the present. Drawing together primary source materials, including personal correspondence, historical recordings, technical documentation, and musical sketches and scores, from across the Library for the Performing Arts’ rich archival collections, this exhibition highlights the significant contributions of pioneering electronic and computer music composers Otto Luening, Pauline Oliveros, Edgard Varèse, and Charles Dodge. Alongside original electronic sound processing equipment, oscillators, early mixing consoles, a full scale photographic reproduction of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center’s RCA Mark II synthesizer, and additional documentation and artifacts drawn from the archives at Nokia Bell Labs, these materials highlight the substantial technological innovations that contributed to and resulted from their forward-thinking experimentation and the multi-institutional, crossdisciplinary collaborations that often supported their work.

Curated by Seth Cluett, current artist-in-residence at Nokia Bell Labs and Acting Director of the Computer Music Center at Columbia University, Sounding Circuits is presented in collaboration with the Department of Music at Columbia University and Nokia Bell Labs Experiments in Art and Technology. Throughout the exhibition, a rotating playlist of archival recordings will be woven together with a series of 360-degree audio works commissioned and created during Cluett’s four-month research residency with NYPL’s Music and Recorded Sound Divisions.

Second Stage Theater Four Decades of Producing Living American Playwrights APRIL 16 – AUGUST 17, 2019 Come celebrate the decades of plays and musicals that have defined Second Stage as the home for living American playwrights.

In 1979, a new theater was born with a novel idea: give a second chance to American plays that are worthy of a second look. Second Stage Theater started in a cramped 100-seat space on the 16th floor of a hotel on the Upper West Side. That first production was far from an easy or auspicious launch – the director and three actors quit, one at the very last minute (luckily, a young actor named Jeff Daniels agreed to step in and perform).

Since then, Second Stage Theater (2ST for those in the know) has gone on to become a home for emerging writers and actors, having discovered and nurtured some of the most prominent theater artists of recent years, including Annette Bening, Timothy Daly, Taye Diggs, Laurence Fishburne, Mo Gaffney, Kenneth Lonergan, Patti LuPone, Kathy Najimy, Cynthia Nixon, Lynn Nottage, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Ben Platt, Anna Deavere Smith, and Wendy Wasserstein, among countless others.

The company operates three venues throughout Manhattan: Off-Broadway’s Kiser and McGinn/Cazale Theaters; and as of February 2018, The Hayes Theater. Newly renovated

by David Rockwell, The Hayes Theater is the first permanent Broadway space dedicated exclusively to living American playwrights.

This exhibit will focus on the people, the writers, the designs, and the spaces that have made 2ST “an oasis for smart, modern theatergoers” (The New York Times). See the evolution of the Theater through set models, production photography, original papers, and personal recorded accounts from the artists who have made Second Stage their home.

Archive in Motion 75 Years of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division JULY 15 – DECEMBER 15, 2019 The Jerome Robbins Dance Division celebrates its 75th year with an exhibition that charts its history and the establishment of international dance archival practices through the display of significant items from its collections.

Originally called the Dance Collection and housed at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building at 42nd Street, in the 75 years since its creation, The New York Public Library’s Dance Division has become the world’s preeminent collection of dance research materials. Renamed in honor of Jerome Robbins — one of the Dance Division’s greatest supporters — in 1999, the Division not only houses its name sake's vast collection, but is the leading international repository for the history of dance, with documentation that dates back to 1453 and representation for dance of all styles from around the world. The archive includes irreplaceable film that dates back to 1897; unique designs by visual artists; choreographic notation; photographs; manuscript collections; shoes and many more examples of ephemera. When taken together, these materials provide the opportunity to fleetingly recapture the most elusive of the performing arts.

Spring Shorts APRIL 1 – JUNE 14, 2019 Astor Gallery

For ten weeks, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, the Music Division, and the Billy Rose Theatre Division of the Library have free reign to highlight their collections in creative ways. Taking place in the Astor Gallery, activities will range from accordion play-alongs with renowned historian and performer Bill Schimmel; acting workshops led by HB Studio to tie in with the Uta Hagen centennial; and a two-week hip-hop festival focusing first on music, and then on dance.

3rd Floor Displays Shelby Cullom Davis Museum

Seán O’Casey JANUARY 28 – MARCH 23, 2019 The life and work of celebrated Irish playwright Seán O’Casey (1880-1964) will be explored through correspondence, scripts, production materials, and photographs. Among the works highlighted will be his Dublin Trilogy plays The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Juno and the Paycock (1924), and The Plough and the Stars (1926), as well as later works such as Within the Gates (1934), Purple Dust (1945), and Cocka-Doodle Dandy (1949). The exhibit will draw from the archival collections of such theatre luminaries as critic Brooks Atkinson, actress Lillian Gish, and producer and director Lucille Lortel, as well as the Theatre Division’s scripts, programs, and photographs.

Actress + Activist Uta Hagen at 100 APRIL 1 – JULY 31, 2019 This exhibition, presented in collaboration with HB Studio, is a celebration of the life and work of actress and teacher Uta Hagen.

The exhibition will include materials from the Uta Hagen and Herbert Berghof Papers, as well as the HB Studio Records, which are housed in the Library's Billy Rose Theatre Division, and will feature Hagen's diary, never published. In it, she records her thrill upon receiving the script for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.

Friendly and warm; shimmering with joyful complexity and wit; infused with meditative spirituality… The Library’s collection of Felix Mendelssohn letters echoes the beloved qualities of his music. Pianist Matthew Odell curates an afternoon concert of songs and instrumental chamber music, accompanied by recitations and a display of Mendelssohn’s handwritten letters from the Library’s archives.

The Gotham Jazzmen present a weekly concert of jazz favorites certain to lift your spirits and make you forget your “library voices.” Doors open at 11:45 a.m.

An Evening with Jonathan Dely THUR, FEB 14 | 6 PM Jazz trumpeter Jonathan Dely returns to the Bruno Walter Auditorium for a feature concert showcasing his world-class band and an exciting program drawing from the pop, classical, and jazz genres. A rising star in New York, Dely performs a concert as energetic as it is cool and romantic.

In 1944 a tenacious, forward-looking librarian in The New York Public Library’s Music Division had a vision: The Library needed to be a place for dance. She courted and cajoled and delivered for the Library the archives of Isadora Duncan, Doris Humphrey, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, and other dance luminaries. Seventy-five years later, the Jerome Robbins Dance Division is the largest and most comprehensive dance archive in the world. Each generation of curators and staff have helped the collection grow. As a young boy, Jerome Robbins’ budding imagination was nourished in the children’s room of The New York Public Library. In 1965, after achieving paramount success, Robbins fueled the growth of the Dance Collection at the Library for the Performing Arts by donating a portion of his Fiddler on the Roof royalties in perpetuity. At a moment of financial crisis Robbins was one of the Library’s heroes, helping to organize a starstudded City Center gala to save the Dance Collection (now named the Jerome Robbins Dance Division). Jerome Robbins’ Poppa Piece THUR, MAR 21 | 6 PM In the early 1990s, as Jerome Robbins confronted the twilight of his storied career, he endeavored to create one last theater work that would reconcile the questions and mysteries of his life. Hidden away at his Bridgehampton beach home and cloistered behind the doors of private rehearsal studios, Robbins tirelessly attempted to construct an honest self-portrait, detailing his own Jewish immigrant heritage, family history, and personal failures. Join us for an archival dive into Robbins’ never produced autobiographical theater masterwork, Poppa Piece. For this special program, the Library presents a collage of rarely heard private audio recordings, rehearsal footage, musical numbers, plus recitations of Robbins’ private journals and diaries.

Pete Fornatale’s Rock on the Radio THURS, APR 18 | 6 PM Help the Library celebrate a pioneer of FM Rock Radio, Pete Fornatale. In 1964 with his weekly show “Campus Caravan” for Fordham University’s WFUV, Fornatale became the first person to host a rock and roll radio show in New York City. For the rest of his life, Fornatale was an essential member of the rock community, interviewing and writing about legends, including John Fogerty, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Paul Simon, and The Grateful Dead. The Library celebrates the acquisition of Pete Fornatale’s archive, with special guest interviews and classic segments from Fornatale broadcasts now in the collection.

Tovah Feldshuh Loved Well (Not Wisely): Paul Robeson and Uta Hagen’s Othello MON, MAY 13 | 6 PM A collage of archival audio, photographs, semi-staged readings, and expert commentary transports you 75 years into theatre history.

In October 1943, the Theatre Guild opened a revolutionary and courageous Othello, the first major American Shakespeare production starring an African American actor, Paul Robeson, opposite a white leading lady, Uta Hagen. As the play churned to its dramatic end, the tragic lovers shared the fateful kiss – Broadway’s first interracial kiss.

Hagen’s career was forever changed, as her association with Robeson condemned her to the Hollywood blacklist. The production set the record for the longest run of any Shakespeare play on Broadway, a record which remains unbroken. Join us for an exploration of this historic and influential production, as we celebrate the centennial of Uta Hagen.

THURS, JUN 27 | 6 PM The New York Times says Joe Iconis is “… the future of musical theatre.” Well, the future is now. This spring, Iconis’ newest sci-fi musical Be More Chill, makes a much anticipated arrival on Broadway. The show is a phenomenon, with the Off-Broadway cast album streamed over 80 million times and a film version in development. His song “Broadway, Here I Come!” from NBC's SMASH was hailed by The New York Times as a new entry in the Great American Songbook. For this special program, Joe Iconis chills out at the Library piano, where he’ll discuss his music, his process, and his influences.

David Vaughan was the archivist of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, author of Merce Cunningham/65 Years and Frederick Ashton and His Ballets, and was the dance historian in residence of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division from 2012 onward, holding monthly screenings of his favorite dance films and videos from the collection. David Vaughan passed away on October 28, 2017. The Dance Division continues the screening series in his honor.

This new series highlights selections from these recordings, which date back to 1967. Dance Division staff will introduce each program, which will range from 60-90 minutes.

Merce Cunningham FEB 13 Torse, 1977.

This film utilizes the split screen method which permits the viewer to see the movement from two different aspects at the same time.

The right and left screen versions have been printed onto one film. Performed by members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company: Karole Armitage, Louise Burns, Ellen Cornfield, Morgan Ensminger, Lisa Fox, Meg Harper, Chris Komar, Robert Kovich, Julie Roess-Smith, and Jim Self.

Choreography and performance by the legendary flamenco dancer and choreographer, Pilar Rioja.

Martha Graham APR 10 A selection of films recorded in 1977.

Titles include Death and Entrances, Primitive Mysteries, and El Penitente.

Honi Coles and Brenda Bufalino MAY 8 Milt and Honi, 1985.

Tap dancers Honi Coles and Brenda Bufalino rehearse solo and together with the assistance of jazz musicians Milt Hinton on bass, Mickey Tucker on piano, and Bob Rosengarden on drums.

On Your Toes JUN 12 A recording of the 1983 Broadway revival of the 1936 lighthearted musical comedy with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. The show was originally choreographed by George Balanchine, and the 1983 revival features additional choreography by Donald Saddler and Peter Martins. Legendary ballerina Natalia Makarova made her Broadway musical debut in this production, to much acclaim. Other notable cast members include George de la PeĂąa, Dina Merrill, and Starr Danias.

THURS, FEB 7 | 6 PM Join us for a screening on 16mm film of Before Stonewall: the Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community (1985, 87 min.) to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

No Justice, No Peace: Documenting Discrimination MON, MAR 18 | 6 PM Dispatches from Cleveland (2017), an examination of police misconduct and social discrimination in Cleveland will frame a consideration of the history of using moving images to document or bear witness to social injustice and the policing of Black America.

The evening will include a panel discussion and historical films held in the Library’s Reserve Film and Video Collection, including Cinda Firestone’s seminal work Attica (1974).

Two historical documentary works from the Library’s 16mm film collection — A Storm of Strangers: Jewish American (1969) and The Biggest Jewish City in the World (1975) — will be screened and discussed.

Works from the Library’s 16mm film collection will accompany special guests in a celebration and discussion of the vibrant history of African-American independent filmmakers in New York.

Black Shadows on a Silver Screen 32 Free Programs and Exhibitions

A selection of documentary films from the Reserve Film and Video Collection will frame a panel discussion on the social and political importance of Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 which, in short, prescribed equity in school sports for female athletes. The program will include the premiere of the restoration of Bonnie Friedman’s award-winning educational film The Flashettes (1977), which documented the titular girls’ Bed Stuy track club.
