Welcome to the Library for the Performing Arts!

I am told frequently that artists consider our Library their second home. Students of all ages expand their knowledge by attending our programs, while both emerging and seasoned artists hone their skills by researching the luminaries who came before them.

This past year, over 450,000 people borrowed from the circulating collection, enjoyed our exhibitions and programs, delved into our archives, and communed with friends in our sunny cafĂŠ. All of these opportunities were offered free of charge.

It is our pleasure to offer again a fabulous new season of events and exhibitions. In our galleries and on our stage, we are celebrating artists who have made art to make a difference: Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini, Jerome Robbins, Katherine Dunham, Laurie Anderson, Jane Alexander, and Joseph Papp; immigrant artists, courageous artists, and activist artists; artists who create to inspire, uplift, and comfort people during times of discord and violence; artists who provoke and engage; artists who broaden our perspective; artists committed to peace.

Recently I have been disheartened by the potential devaluation of the performing arts through government budget cuts. What if the arts and the institutions where we learn about them did not exist?

Hilary Knight’s Stage Struck World NOW – OCTOBER 14, 2017

Hilary Knight was born stage-struck, ninety years ago. Best known as the illustrator of the American classic Eloise, he cites the performing arts as the single greatest influence on his life and career.

As a child, Knight was fascinated by the circus and could not get enough of Broadway. His artist parents introduced him to musicals with Jumbo in 1935.

His early theatrical influences were Ethel Merman in Red, Hot and Blue; Gertrude Lawrence in Lady in the Dark; and the sensational Carmen Miranda in The Streets of Paris. The movies were another source of inspiration and obsession. Designer Adrian’s extravagant costumes for The Great Ziegfeld (1936) mesmerized him; child star Sabu in Elephant Boy (1937) became a hero.

After studying at the Art Students’ League with Reginald Marsh, and then a stint in the US Navy in World War II, Knight designed sets under the exacting eye of the legendary George Abbott at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine.

Eloise became a national and international bestseller in the 1950’s, and Knight’s children’s book career took off with titles such as Where’s Wallace, and The Circus is Coming! Yet his work in the theater continued with iconic Broadway posters, including No, No, Nanette, Irene, Half a Sixpence, and the burlesque musical Sugar Babies, starring Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller, among many others.

Now for the first time, Hilary Knight’s stage-struck life is the subject of a comprehensive exhibition that includes original artwork for posters; theatrical illustrations for Vanity Fair magazine (where Knight is a contributing editor); Knight’s most recent work — three-dimensional portraits in stage-like settings — and costume and set designs for performances and revues that reveal that for Hilary Knight, all the world is indeed a stage.

Winter Wonderland George Balanchine's The Nutcracker® OCTOBER 26, 2017 – JANUARY 27, 2018 It is so much a part of the holidays in New York, that it is now hard to imagine a time when George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® did not call for an annual pilgrimage to the ballet. When the ballet debuted in 1954 however, it was not an immediate success. But when a televised and narrated version in 1958 brought the magical world into people’s homes all across America, a classic was born. In 1964 the ballet saw some choreographic changes, and brand new costumes and sets were commissioned from the artists Barbara Karinska and Rouben Ter-Arutunian. The modifications brought iced perfection to an already sweet work, and The Nutcracker® has remained untouched since this time, allowing multiple generations to bond over a shared experience year after year with the New York City Ballet.

The exhibition Winter Wonderland: George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® charts the early years of the ballet’s life from its premiere in February 1954 to the success of the remounted production in 1964. Through treasures from the archives of the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, including photographs, set models, costume designs, and original film footage, the story of the work emerges, as do the thematic qualities which make Balanchine’s version of the ballet unique and so enduring: namely nostalgia, faith, love, and childhood innocence and wonder.

TOSCANINI Preserving a Legacy in Sound NOVEMBER 9, 2017 – APRIL 7, 2018 Arturo Toscanini (1867 - 1957) remains among the most revered figures in classical music, due in large part to the dissemination of his work through hundreds of commercially produced recordings and wide-reaching radio broadcasts, which helped to define and perpetuate his cultural significance during the second half of his meteoric career. This exhibition explores the iconoclastic yet beloved conductor’s legacy through the very medium in which he worked: sound.

With a particular focus on his 17-year career with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, Toscanini: Preserving a Legacy in Sound draws foremost upon the Toscanini Legacy collection of sound recordings, the single largest collection held by the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The over 43,000 items represent the full array of audio formats in use during Toscanini’s lifetime, including lacquer, shellac, and vinyl discs, tape reels, cylinders, and wire recordings as well as the more obscure selenophone recordings and the metal parts used in the production of 78 rpms discs. As one of the world’s leading sound archives, the Library for the Performing Arts will place front and center Toscanini’s recordings through ongoing live demonstrations and free public programs devoted to the craft of preserving and archiving the technology he helped define during his lifetime.

In conjunction with the above exhibition, the Library presents a series of listening events featuring recordings of Toscanini’s World War II era radio broadcasts with the NBC Symphony orchestra, which soothed a war-weary nation and used music as an airborne weapon for freedom and democracy.

Leonard Bernstein at 100 DECEMBER 9, 2017 – MARCH 24, 2018

Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebrates the centennial of America’s greatest classical composer and conductor. Drawing from more than 150 photographs, personal items, papers, scores, correspondence, costumes, furniture, and films, Leonard Bernstein at 100 marks the official exhibit of the centennial and is the most comprehensive retrospective of Bernstein’s life and career ever staged in a museum setting.

Items on display will include Bernstein’s conductor baton; his first childhood piano; the desk used to compose West Side Story; handwritten score sheets for songs from West Side Story, including “America,” “Tonight,” and “Maria”; Bernstein’s handwritten Harvard study notebook from 1939; and more. In addition to the objects and the multi-media presentations, the exhibit includes a number of interactive displays, designed to allow the museum visitor deep access into Bernstein’s creative mind and music legacy. A listening bar will enable visitors to explore some of Bernstein’s most noted works; and a vocal booth gives visitors the chance to sing lead in West Side Story. Another interactive breaks down the parts of a symphony for greater understanding of Bernstein’s greatest orchestral works, while a specially designed interactive gives visitors the opportunity to step into Bernstein’s conducting shoes and lead the New York Philharmonic. There are Bernstein home movies, GRAMMY® performances, interviews with contemporaries and colleagues, clips of his most noted stage works, segments taken from Bernstein’s famous Young People’s Concerts, and performances with the New York Philharmonic.

Leonard Bernstein at 100 was curated by the GRAMMY Museum® in collaboration with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and the Bernstein Family. Presented in cooperation with the Bernstein Family, The Leonard Bernstein Office, Inc., Brandeis University, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Additional support is provided by the Leo Shull Foundation for the Arts, Barbara G. Fleischman, Howard and Sarah Solomon and Dasha Epstein.

On September 26, 1957 West Side Story opened at the glamorous Winter Garden Theatre in midtown Manhattan, but the true setting of this innovative musical masterpiece was the gritty streets and blue-collar housing projects of the Upper West Side. Maria and Tony’s tragic romance unfolded where Lincoln Center and The Library for the Performing Arts now stand. For this special program, West Side Story comes home — back to the neighborhood of the story’s setting; back to the archival home of Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; back to its moments of creation, through the memories of original cast members and special guests. Lend your voice to the 60th anniversary celebration of West Side Story, where we see rare documents from the show’s creators, share a conversation with West Side Story veterans, and sing along to live performances of the show’s most beloved numbers.

Bernstein on Film: On the Waterfront FILM

THURS, DEC 21 | 6 PM Directed by Elia Kazan 108 minutes, 1954 Leonard Bernstein’s only original film score brings a mournful and percussive sound to this classic tale of corruption on the New York docks. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, but while Bernstein’s score was nominated it ultimately lost to Dimitri Tiomkin’s more radio-friendly music for The High and the Mighty. Reportedly frustrated by the fragmentation and dialed-down volume of his music — a given in any film score — Bernstein chose to forego any future composing opportunities in the medium.

Probably the best way to give you a good picture of what American music promises for the future, is to just throw the topic to the four gentlemen, like tossing it to the lions, as it were, and let them bat it around…” As part of our Bernstein centennial celebration, the Library reconsiders the question “What is American music?” After listening to a historic WNYC recording of Bernstein and his contemporaries, a diverse quartet of contemporary music makers — Vijay Iyer, Gabriel Kahane, Tania Leon, and Julia Wolfe — gather around the piano to discuss a new definition for American music.

Memorabilia from maverick-artists of the ‘60s — Allen Ginsberg, Jimi Hendrix, Elaine Summers, and others — will be on display at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in conjunction with a companion Counterculture exhibition at the Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman building. Among the many iconic items will be the program from the Woodstock Music & Art Fair and Phil Ochs’ The War Is Over songbook.

Jane Austen’s Music Library SAT, OCT 28 | 2:30 PM With Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and other works, Jane Austen charmed her era and ours, while boldly blazing a trail that women writers continue to follow today.

At home, it was music that fueled her literary creativity. She sang, played piano, and hand-copied her favorite pieces of music. Now, through an innovative digital archive project at the University of Southampton, Austen’s music library has been shared with the world. The period instrument ensemble Broadwood Junction presents an afternoon of music from Jane Austen’s library, performed on the same style square piano that Jane Austen herself owned and played.

Derived from the word katha, meaning “the art of storytelling,” Kathak is one of India’s most dynamic, classical dancetheatre traditions. Following in the footsteps of her guru, Pandit Chitresh Das, Rachna Nivas, one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary Indian dancers, is using Kathak to dialogue with other world dance traditions. For this special Library program, Nivas offers an enthralling introduction to Kathak, with virtuosic musicianship, narrative movement, and expert interpretation.

Anyone Who Had a Heart: The Burt Bacharach Songbook THURS, NOV 16 | 6 PM Russian-American pianist Sasha Papernik and her ensemble explore the songbook of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The program includes music influential to Bacharach’s style, from the harmonic influences of Darius Milhaud to the bebop rhythms of Dizzy Gillespie, and original music informed by Bacharach’s legacy. Featuring Sasha Papernik (piano/vocals), Justin Poindexter (guitar/vocals), Kyle Saulnier (upright bass), and Will Clark (percussion).

She is the founder and Artistic Director of Davalois Fearon Dance. Her choreography has been presented throughout New York City, including at the Joyce Theater, E-Moves 17 dance series, The Dance Enthusiast “Moving Caribbean in NYC,” the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Roulette, and the Inception to Exhibition Dance Festival.

American Encounters American Encounters: American Quartet SAT, JAN 27 | 2:30 PM One of the great treasures of the Library’s music archives is a receipt. Dated 1893, it is a signed acknowledgment of a $2,000 salary payment to the distinguished Bohemian composer Antonin Dvorak, who had traveled across the world to direct our nation’s fledgling National Conservatory of Music. During his legendary years in America, Dvorak inspired a new generation of young composers to listen to songs of marginalized peoples and create uniquely American music. His influence continued to resonate into the twentieth century. The New York Classical Players present an engaging retrospective of American string quartets, including Dvorak’s beloved Quartet in F major from 1893, Charles Ives’s rarely heard 1897 Quartet no. 1, plus quartets from the Library’s manuscripts collections by Charles Griffes and George Antheil.

In New York City, Joe Papp, the restless young champion of free Shakespeare for all, responded to the angst of the nation with a radical reinvention of Hamlet. Radio Maestro: Toscanini and NBC Symphony Orchestra SAT, NOV 18 | 11 AM An astonishing 23,000 people requested tickets for the live taping of Arturo Toscanini’s inaugural radio concert conducting the newly founded NBC Symphony Orchestra. On December 25, 1937, performances of Mozart’s “Great G Minor Symphony” and Brahms’ Symphony no. 1 were broadcast live from studio 8H into millions of households, uplifting a nation still struggling through the Great Depression. The library draws a sonic portrait of Christmas Day, 1937, with a presentation of Toscanini’s first NBC broadcast and other radio recordings from the time.

Toscanini’s American Anthems WED, DEC 13 | 7 PM On December 13, 1941, in their first broadcast after the tragic bombing of Pearl Harbor, Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra presented a commemorative program of American music, including Barber’s mournful Adagio for Strings, Dvorak’s “New World Symphony,” and Toscanini’s own rousing arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Listen to America in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack, with a radio collage featuring the December 13 NBC Symphony Orchestra broadcast, plus excerpts from the Bell Telephone Hour of December 8, 1941, remarks by President Roosevelt, and other archival recordings.

Music for a City Under Siege TUES, JAN 30 | 7 PM Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Symphony no. 7 as Nazi bombs exploded outside his windows. Under siege in the city of Leningrad, Shostakovich wrote an epic symphony that seemed to mock the evil violence of the Nazis and celebrate the unbreakable will of the Russian people. The score, copied to microfilm, was smuggled across the world and delivered to Toscanini. On July 19, 1942, the NBC Symphony premiered the work as an airborne weapon for freedom. Hear the legendary broadcast of Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” Symphony, along with excerpts from the Armed Forces Radio Service collection.

Established in 1968 by the visionary arts educator Rodger Larson, the Young Filmakers Foundation provided equipment, uplifted marginalized kids through the arts, and in some cases launched careers in cinema. From the very first years of the Foundation, the Library’s Reserve Film and Video Collection has been acquiring and preserving these youth-produced films.

Leonard Bernstein’s only original film score brings a mournful and percussive sound to this classic tale of corruption on the New York docks. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, but while Bernstein’s score was nominated it ultimately lost to Dimitri Tiomkin’s more radio-friendly music for The High and the Mighty. Reportedly frustrated by the fragmentation and dialed-down volume of his music — a given in any film score — Bernstein chose to forego any future composing opportunities in the medium.

Profile of a Peace Parade captures the passionate participants, the pageantry, and the onlookers of a 1966 anti-war demonstration, marking the anniversary of Hiroshima’s bombing. OCT 14 Here’s a salute to some very funny comics who are silent comedy’s neglected masters — Lloyd Hamilton, Al St. John, Arthur Housman, and Charley Chase. All were prolific “Kings of Comedy” in their day who worked overtime for many years to supply a steady stream of movie laughter. The fun is provided by Careful Please (1926), Stupid But Brave (1924), Just a Husband (1927), and His Wooden Wedding (1925).

David Vaughan was the archivist of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and author of Merce Cunningham/65 Years and Frederick Ashton and His Ballets.
