HOLIDAY GUIDE

The season seems to arrive earlier with each passing year. Some thrive on the excitement, frenzied shopping and festive decorations, while others feel like a reindeer in headlights! How do we keep tradition and joy without losing sight of the camaraderie and…frankly, our sanity? Here are a few helpful hints to keep you sane and a couple of yummy and easy recipes to get you ready for the festivities, from your friends at TownLink Guides! Make a list! Know who you need to buy for so you don’t wander aimlessly or purchase impulsively. You don’t go grocery shopping without a list, so don’t go gift shopping without one either. As you create your list, try to note your recipients’ interests, favorite colors, clothing sizes and any other pertinent info. You’ll find as you’re writing your list, that you begin to “brainstorm” some gift ideas that you can note on your list. Observe! Those who have mastered the art of gifting pay attention to what their friends and loved ones say and what their interests are. Keep a list throughout the year of gift ideas for those you know you’ll be exchanging with. Inspiration comes at the oddest times and often you’ll get hints from your family, friends, and co-workers as to what their likes and dislikes are. Think! Would they like something useful, or something decorative? Something for the house, or something for themselves? Thoughtful gift-givers also understand the circumstances of their recipients. People don’t always ask for what they want — or even realize that they need it — but by paying attention to what would make their life easier or what they need replaced, you can almost always pick the perfect unique gift. Give by personality! Matching the gift to your recipient’s unique personality sends a message that says you care about who they are. Trendsetters may enjoy different gifts than fitness aficionados. Your travelista friend might like a leather bag or passport holder, while your friend who loves to entertain might appreciate new

tableware. And that Dad who is always tough to buy for…no more soap on a rope. Why not appeal to his culinary side with a gift certificate at his favorite eatery, even if it’s just the deli down the street. Or the couple that would enjoy a night out – treat them to dinner and a movie with a gift certificate to each! Give to a good cause! Everyone knows at least one impossible-to-shopfor person. Perhaps they have everything or just have enough “stuff” and don’t really want more. Give them a gift that supports a good cause, or make a donation in their name to a cause or charity that’s near and dear to their heart. There are so many ways to give back to the world while giving to people you love! Give by niche interest or hobby! Hobbies and interests are always a great source of gifting inspiration. Are they a gardener, or perhaps a wine lover, a foodie or a needle-pointer, a snow boarder or a bookworm? Giving within that niche is a great way to let them know that you notice and appreciate this unique aspect of them. The trick, however, is not to overdo it. If everybody knows that your friend absolutely adores elephants, chances are that she has more generic elephant-themed items than she knows what to do with. You’ll have to think outside the box and do something unique, like sponsoring an elephant sanctuary in her name! Give an adventure! Adventures also make great nonmaterial gifts, especially if your loved one likes to get out. An adventurous gift can be anything from a skydiving experience, to a class that the two of you take together, to a membership to a local museum or state park. Again, it all depends on your recipient and what her interests are. Meaningful gifts are the best gifts. There are so many options when it comes to presents that show how much you care. So when it comes to giving, don’t settle for the fruits of aimless mall-wandering. Find your loved ones the meaningful gifts they deserve! And remember, anyone can give a thoughtful present. All it takes is a little perceptiveness and a dash of creativity.
